It was clear last Saturday that hundreds of people were enjoying the opportunity to get back to local football and netball competitions with their clubs.
Renewing friendships and acquaintances with both those from their own club and opposition who they haven’t seen since last season.
It is always particularly pleasing to see the number of young children enjoying their opportunities to get out on the ground and court between games and quarters starting their own dreams of playing for their local club like their current heroes.
After round 1 there have been some interesting questions created around which clubs have improved.
Skipton who started with the bye last week have a chance to provide the competition with a gauge on where Clunes are at. Have the Magpies improved dramatically or was last week an early bounce before they settle in a similar lower ladder position which they have endured over recent seasons.
Skipton have lost several of their senior team from last season but appear to have been able to add some players of similar experience which might freshen up their total group.
Ben Lusby joined the Emus late in last season, and had an impact in the matches which he did play. If he is available for the whole season he will be a vital high forward that will test many defenders.
Another key for Skipton is their mobile ruck man Patrick Graham who is very dangerous both around the ground and when as a forward target. At 26 years of age he is still going to be improving and potentially could be the most important player across the league.
Clunes will be trying to combat this with their ground level midfielders, in particular Mathew Ryan, the reigning CHFL Rookie of the Year, who started the season strongly last week.
He will be supported by Marshall Murray who in his second year at the Magpies is showing plenty of talent at this level of competition.
Despite Clunes’ great round 1 win Skipton at home will start warm favourites.
Springbank has another home match this week, a tough task against Dunnstown.
The Towners had a slow start to last season losing three of their first five matches so after getting an initial win last week Brad Whittaker will be keen to lead the team to a second win.
They had an even mix of longer term and new players who took control of the match for them last week, with their half back line of reigning Geoff Taylor Medallist Will Henderson at centre half back and Jack Leonard lining up beside him giving a lot of drive deep into the forward line.
Backing them up was new recruit Drew Murphy who has been attracted to the club from East Point reserves and Nick Byrne doing well starting his second season at the club.
This strength through the middle of the ground enabled the Dunnstown to rebound deep into their attack which may create a problem for Springbank who had trouble getting through Rokewood Corindhap’s defensive press.
Springbank is going to need more impact from its midfield of Pat Glanford, James Thompson and Todd Finco to create the run to build deep entries into the forward line.
Dunnstown will be favourites to make it two from two.
A big clash will be between Carngham Linton and Rokewood Corindhap on the newly developed Linton oval.
Rokewood Corindhap won at ground level and in the key forward posts against Springbank and if they can repeat this, they have a good chance of getting a win and giving themselves the best start to a season since 2011.
Carngham Linton must bounce back from their defeat in round 1 and playing on their amazing new oval surface at Linton will give them a lift, but this might not be sufficient to win in enough positions to stop the Grasshoppers.
The battle between Tyson Scoble, Nick O’Brien and Dean O’Brien and Matthew Aikman, Luke Philp and Mack Rivett will be an excellent spectacle.
Rokewood Corindhap to be too strong for the Saints.
Two winners from round 1 Creswick and Learmonth will both be aiming to build some momentum.
Learmonth in recent years have been strong starters to the season but then lose momentum and miss finals whilst Creswick have been out of finals action for more than a decade, so there is plenty of incentive for both to add a second win.
Creswick’s former CHFL Team of the Year member Patrick Taranto started the season strongly and along with Dane-Francis Whitfield they are the key ball winners for the Wickers. Whitfield is an excellent target for the Creswick midfield as the key forward.
His attack on the football will often create opportunities for others to find an avenue towards goal.
Lakies veteran Brenton Powell leads their backline and he will have the primary role in ensuring that key defenders Josh Finlay and Luke Ozols are supported in negating Creswick’s most potent sector of the ground.
Creswick to get a win at home.
Bungaree will be too strong for Ballan after their solid win at Hepburn.
Demon’s veterans Jackson and Dalton Murphy both started the season strongly and can be important links to setting up the Bungaree forward line.
They create many opportunities for clever small forwards Joel Mahar and Simon Butler.
Ballan has its strength through the midfield with Daniel Nielsen and Lachlan Conroy their key leaders and the Blues are going to need to be at their best to get close.
Daylesford vs Hepburn is usually a close contest and after the results of round one it is expected to be no different this week.
The Bulldogs will raise their premiership flag from 2024 which will give their community a big lift but Hepburn have themselves seen this done many times for their own teams and will not be thrown off their game.
This clash will be another great opportunity to see if Hepburn have enough depth across the ground to match it with the top few. To come up against the previous year’s grand finalists in the first two rounds is a tough start for the Burras but if they can create one win it will be a very good start.
Meanwhile Daylesford look to have added even further depth to their team across the ground and going into a second year with the majority of their premiership team still present will be starting as favourite to build on last week’s big win.
For Beaufort the trip to Buninyong is going to be a crucial indicator to see if they have been able to have any improvement through their recruiting over the summer.
If the Bombers are able to control the game and dominate scoring opportunities it will be very concerning to Daniel Jones and the Beaufort coaching group who would be expecting to be competitive against the clubs expected to finish bottom of the top eight or slightly lower.
Buninyong to be too strong at home.
The final match should result in a win to Newlyn over Waubra and enable the Cats to get their first points of the season.
With potentially the best young recruit in the league in Nedd Bennett, Newlyn has otherwise not had many changes in their playing group from last season.
They feature many experienced players who have been successful at premier league level and the challenge for them is to bring along enough young players who can add another level to their performance.
Newlyn’s target this year will be to get higher than last year’s seventh placed finish and put pressure on gaining a top four position.
Based upon last week’s result it appears that Waubra has quite a distance to go to be competitive regularly against the rest of the league. It may be even harder this week against Newlyn compared to Clunes, which would be a concern for the Kangaroo supporters.

Patrons are reminded that for their own safety and the viewing comfort of others, that they must remain outside the playing arena fence for the duration of each game. Sitting between the fence and boundary line is not permitted. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.

Welcome back. So, season 2025 has now arrived and the Central Highlands Netball Committee are raring to go after a hectic pre-season. We welcome one new general committee member for season 2025 with Katleyn Sutton coming on board to lend a hand. Katelyn’s wealth of netball experience will be a great asset to the committee. We would like to thank Rhonda Best for her time and commitment to the league over the last four years and look forward to seeing her around Gordon during the season. The rest of the committee remains unchanged and we look forward to another productive and enjoyable year together.
Just a reminder for you about who they all are: Vice-President- Glenda Jones, Treasurer- Kirrily Liddle, Recording Secretary- Kristi Pedretti, Assistant Recording Secretary- Shelley Lockhart, Secretary- Beck Findlay, Umpire Educator- Pam Davidson, and General Committee Members, Anne Wade and Katleyn Sutton. Please do not hesitate to contact any one of us if you have any questions throughout the year.
2024 was another successful year and the standard of netball keeps climbing across all grades. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t play fair on Grand Final Day and we ended up a little wet and cold, but it didn’t stop the enthusiasm of
teams selected cannot exceed the limit.
Glenda Jones deserves a huge pat on the back for the extra work that she has put in collating, confirming and communicating with all clubs to make sure we have the correct details for every A and B grade player from every team from the last 3 years. As you can imagine it was a huge job and one that she has done very well. Thank you, Glenda, and thank you to the clubs for working with us on this new policy. Hopefully, it is a success, and we see benefits throughout the year.
Our junior Interleague Coaches have been announced for 2025 with MariahJayne (MJ) Ford from Learmonth taking our 13 and Under girls under her wing, Emily Findlay from Learmonth leading our 15 and Under girls again and 17 and Under premiership coach Mick Tranter takes the lead with the group again. Thank you to you all for putting your hand up again to lead the best our league offers. Last weekend then saw the teams selected over 2 trials and with more 15 and 13 and Under applicants than ever before, there were some incredibly tough decisions to be made by our talented coaches. I would like to thank all parents for taking the time to bring their girls along and congratulate those that were successful. For those who didn’t make it, work hard this season,
