SEMI FINAL - INTRODUCTION

No More Double Chances

Last Wednesday the Geoff Taylor Medal was presented to Will Henderson from Dunnstown in a close contest which had four players in contention for the win with one round of matches to go.

Which added even more intrigue because Dunnstown had the bye in this last round of the season so Henderson was not able to add to his total, whilst Patrick Graham (Skipton), Sean Willmott (Newlyn) and Nick O’Brien (Carngham Linton) all had the opportunity to add to their vote tally and take away the medal.

However, as the tension built not one of them was able to add to the votes in the final round and Will Henderson remained out in front.

It was a very popular win for a true local of the Towners, who has not played at any other club in his career, with a total of 289 games at Dunnstown.

He has been a regular member of the CHFL Team of the Season and an obvious leader on the ground for Dunnstown.

Patrick Graham has become one of the best ruckmen in the league and is also a dangerous forward for the Emus when he goes into the forward line, whilst Sean Willmott made it a trio of locals in the placings following his excellent season as a midfielder for Newlyn.

James Lukich (Bungaree) was presented with the Shane Everard Memorial Goal Kicking Award for his tally of 60 goals in the seniors.

The Rookie of the Year was awarded to Matthew Ryan (Clunes) who impressed many coaches across the league during his first season in senior football.

Ryan Waight (Bungaree) was named as the coach of the Ballarat Trophies and Gifts Team of the Season and Nick O’Brien is captain.

In the Reserves awards Rokewood Corindhap teammates Patrick Smith and Edward Denouden were the winner and runner-up respectively in the Reserve grade and Clint Robinson (Newlyn) won

the goal kicking award with a total of 48 goals.

The Ballarat Courier Award voted on by senior coaches was won by Kynan Raven (Carngham Linton).

In addition on Wednesday a special presentation was made to former CHFL Board member Paul Elliott who was made a Life Member of the CHFL.

Paul spent more than a decade on the CHFL Board of Management, where he was treasurer of the league for the whole of that time and still assists with some of the financial management requirements of the league even though he has stepped down from a Board role.

He has made an enormous contribution to the league in recent times.

The Junior Best & Fairest dinner will be held next Wednesday at the North Ballarat Sports Club.

Unfortunately for Carngham Linton and Newlyn their seasons came to an end last weekend in the elimination finals where Dunnstown and Hepburn were able get solid wins.

These results highlight the evenness across the top eight with Dunnstown who finished in eighth spot defeating Carngham Linton who had finished the home and away season in excellent form and were close to finishing in the top four themselves.

The Towners now have a difficult semi final clash in front of them against Bungaree who lost their Qualifying final against Skipton, fourth defeating first.

Bungaree was able to restrict Skipton’s strong scoring ability but their own forward line was strangled by the Emus and in the finish Bungaree was just not able to find a way to score with any efficiency.

A similar prospect potentially awaits them in their clash with Dunnstown which have a strong defence led by Patrick Britt who has had an excellent season and will usually make it a difficult day for the opposition’s deepest forward, probably James Lukich this week.

SEMI FINAL - INTRODUCTION

Dunnstown have number of solid shut down defenders but at times find it difficult to rebound deep into their own forward line which is something that is important on the long Learmonth oval.

Will Henderson can give this drive out of defence however he has been used a bit more through the midfield this year and it is going to be a difficult decision to determine where he will provide the most advantage this week.

Dunnstown was able to get plenty of value out of its forward line in the Elimination final with Austin Murphy having a day out kicking six goals.

He was supported by Brad Whittaker and the returning Flynn Stevenson with 3 each.

If they are able to get this total number of goals from this trio again this week they will push Bungaree.

Bungaree has a lot of big bodied players across the ground who are difficult to defeat for any contested loose football which all year has given them an advantage enabling deep entries into the forward line.

Skipton took this advantage away from the Demons last week and it will be something which Dunnstown is sure to be trying to replicate as well.

Dunnstown will be persistent but Bungaree have been quite a bit stronger than clubs in the bottom half of the eight all year and will be favourites to give themselves a chance in a preliminary final against Gordon.

On Sunday the second semi final between Daylesford and Hepburn brings a rare second clash between the neighbours for the season.

When they played in round 2 the Bulldogs were a big winner over Hepburn and it confirmed that they were a serious side this season and that form overall has continued throughout the season having had just the four defeats including last week’s loss to Gordon.

Daylesford was competitive against the Eagles up until the last 15 minutes of the match when the

game broke open, so they are close to being able to crack an important finals win.

So far Daylesford hasn’t been able to defeat any of the other three teams which finished in the top four, but have been victorious over those which finished fifth to eighth and they will be favourite against Hepburn.

Ben Jones, the Bulldog’s captain, returned last week and his contribution will be vital this week when he comes up against the 2023 Geoff Taylor Medallist Sean Tighe.

Tighe has only played eight matches this season but in the past two weeks he is showing that he is coming into better form and he has the potential set the Burras alive.

Jones will need to at least break even in the ruck contest so that the strong Hepburn midfield doesn’t get easy first use of the ball.

The contest in the midfield will be a tough clash with both clubs having a very experienced group of players going through this key area of the ground.

Chris Peart and Matthew Dean have been prominent all season for Daylesford and last week had a major influence on the flow of the game, but they will be challenged by Brad McKay and Ricky Ferraro who have both had strong seasons for the Burras.

The return of Andy McKay last week added some firepower for Hepburn and if he along with Jackson Carrick add another three goals each this week it will be go a long way towards the Burras making another preliminary final.

The winner of the Bungaree vs Dunnstown semi final will progress to play against Gordon in preliminary final 1 on Saturday 7th September and the next stop for the Daylesford vs Hepburn winner is against Skipton on Sunday 8th September.

ATTENTION PATRONS

SPECTATOR BEHAVIOUR CODE

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.

2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.

3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.

5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.

6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.

7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.

8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels

rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.

9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.

10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.

11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.

12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.
