ROUND 7 INTRODUCTION

Eight matches of Intrigue

On the coldest and dampest day encountered so far this year the Brandt Under 12 Lightning Premiership at Learmonth was another great success.

More than 340 juniors played in the modified elimination format competition which provided all clubs with the chance to play at least 3 matches and combined with the netball brings together more than 500 players and their families.

There were many scenes of excitement and fun and just camaraderie throughout the day. A highlight with this day is watching away from where the football is, as two opponents standing next to each other happily chat away about whatever they find of interest whilst they wait for the football to come back into their area.

The increasing mix of girls and boys playing in the under 12 teams is a great sight and a number of girls showed they were equal to any of their male opponents.

Learmonth, Ballan, Bungaree and Buninyong made it through to the semi final matches, with the Learmonth v Ballan game the highlight with the final result decided in Ballan’s favour with a goal after the final siren.

The grand final was just as close between Buninyong going for two Lightning Premierships in a row against Ballan. Despite the Ballan players attacking constantly in the second half Buninyong was able to hang on by a single point.

Congratulations to all the players on the day, the coaches, team managers, support staff, parents and broader families for your contribution to making this one of the most important days in the CHFL year.

A major thank you also to Learmonth FNC and all their volunteers who hosted the day, it is consistently as large as each of the preliminary finals later in the season.

At the start of the season there were numerous predictions of a close 2024 in the senior grade football and that already appears to be a reasonable insight on what is occurring.

Bungaree and Daylesford may be undefeated on top of the ladder but Daylesford have been pushed in the past two weeks, including by Rokewood Corindhap who are currently in 14th place on the ladder and it is really only Bungaree who is displaying form which is far ahead of the rest at this stage.

Bungaree have so far generally played against opposition who have shown themselves to be either a top eight side or just on the border of the eight. To this stage they haven’t really been challenged and against the reigning premier Gordon last week the 32 point victory was a comfortable outcome for this point in the season.

There will be some watching Bungaree expressing that they were way out in front at this stage last year but then ended up missing the grand final, but they might be dismissing a close fought preliminary final over eventual winner Gordon a bit lightly.

In round 7 Bungaree would normally be preparing for one of their fiercest contests of the season when they play neighbour Springbank. It might still prove to be a big test for the Demons but Springbank are nowhere near the team that played in the past two grand finals.

On the team sheet week to week they look to be reasonably close to the 2023 outfit but a deeper look highlights that here have been just enough who have moved away and others who are injured to make a major difference.

For the Tigers to be sitting 16th on the ladder with no wins is probably the biggest discussion point around the league. They can play excellent football for a large period of a game but it seems that when the opposition decide to turn up the screws there are too many at Springbank who are not prepared to respond.

Springbank was leading against Creswick at quarter time but then showed a limited response when the Wickers kicked nine goals in the second and third quarters.

Bungaree on their initial matches are a lot stronger than Creswick so it could be a real disaster for Springbank if they lose that interest again this week.

The defeat of Springbank is a spur for Creswick as it has given them what was probably an unexpected second win and put them in a position where they could head into the Kings Birthday weekend bye with some added momentum and be keeping touch with the bottom of the eight.

This week they face a very dangerous opponent though in Carngham Linton who should be rested after the bye, but will it take them awhile to get into the routine of the contest because of that break and give Creswick an opportunity.

Carngham Linton have a significant advantage in that they are a team which is set up to probably play better at grounds away from home especially a large ground like Doug Lindsay Reserve at Creswick.

They move the ball very quickly and have good targets ahead of the football to take advantage of the speed of Kynan and Tarun Raven and Tyson Scoble through the midfield.

Dean O’Brien and Brad McDonald, if he plays, compete well even if they don’t get the ball and create good chances in positive spots in front of goal.

Creswick’s former junior Caleb Hepworth who returned last weekend after many years of good football in premier competitions is going to add a lot of experience and strength in defence. If he ends up on Dean O’Brien his size may give the home team an advantage.

Carngham Linton appear to be one or two goals better than last year and should be too strong for Creswick.

Gordon after their first defeat for the season will be out to ensure that they don’t have back to back losses and in the process inflict Daylesford’s first defeat of the year.

This is going to be Daylesford’s biggest test after initial wins

over teams who are going to be lower on the ladder in the initial rounds and then holding off Rokewood Corindhap and Dunnstown in the past two weeks.

Gordon is likely to be their first top four opponent and it will be a clash worth travelling to see.

Daylesford cannot be underestimated though. They have plenty of players with experience in high level competitions including last years Western Football Netball League Division 1 premiership team.

Gordon know well that a couple of losses in this league can be enough to push you back into the mix of the lower reaches of the top eight and make it a difficult final series. They will need to get back to their best at Victoria Park this week.

Dunnstown are already at risk of losing contact with the final eight with just the two wins from their six matches and this week they face a tough task over at Buninyong.

The Bombers are currently six spots higher on the ladder with just the one loss and have shown themselves to be better than several clubs sitting around Dunnstown on the ladder.

Buninyong appear to have a good balance across their team and the return of a number of talented juniors who have tried their fortunes in the Ballarat FNL is proving to have added just what was needed to a team that just missed finals last season. At home and based on the results up until this stage Buninyong will be starting as favourites.

Waubra have two wins and they host Rokewood Corindhap who have just the one win, but Rokewood Corindhap have probably had the toughest start to the season of all clubs and the Grasshoppers could add to the win tally this week.

In round 1 Rokewood Corindhap had what appeared to be a super start to the season defeating Springbank but since then it has been a tough ask both with key injuries and a lack of depth to ensure a victory is achieved.

However over their last two weeks against current top four teams Daylesford and Buninyong they have been very close to a second victory so it will be expected that a repeat of similar form should ensure that they are too strong for Waubra.

If Waubra can get their third win though they will be eyeing off a spot in the eight amongst a growing pack.

Skipton and Learmonth are just a win apart after six rounds, Skipton though have due to the bye played the one less game and their defeat of Hepburn in round 5 might indicate that they are further advanced than the Lakies at this stage of the season.

Learmonth had a super 20 minutes in the first match against Carngham Linton and then hung on for dear life to get a win they didn’t expect. Since then though they have been solid against those who they are probably expected to beat but some distance off the clubs currently in the eight.

This has been trend for Learmonth for a few seasons and this week is probably as good of an opportunity as any to change that trend and take a significant step forward towards returning to

finals action.

Early wins can never be underestimated even though their still remains ten rounds of competition after this week.

Skipton this year have had quite a few changes in their team of the past few years that got through semi final stage, but they look to have added the correct type of player who can win matches, so they should be too strong for Learmonth.

At three quarter time last week Ballan were within seven points of Skipton which highlights a trend that has shown through early in the season, the Blues are an improved team and they are going to make quite a few opponents work harder than they may have expected when they first looked at the fixture.

At home this week against Clunes, Ballan will be approaching the match as one they want to show their supporters they are on the way back after a few tough years on the field and off as they built their impressive new facilities.

Clunes has two wins compared to Ballan’s one but against a common opponent Waubra there doesn’t appear to be a lot between the two teams.

Ballan this year has been able to recruit some players who have shown that they are good juniors in the BFNL and they may have more upside as the season progresses.

Whether they are ready to defeat Clunes who also look to have at least maintained their level of last season is going to be known by late Saturday.

Newlyn have had a start to the season which has largely matched them up against clubs currently lower on the ladder and as a result they have been able to win comfortably and apart from the loss of two points in the round one abandoned match they have collected all premiership points on offer to them.

This week they face a tougher test against Hepburn who look to be slightly off where initially it might have been expected to be when their returning juniors were added to a team which have just missed the past two grand finals, but they have been inconsistent.

Two weeks ago whilst it was a narrow defeat against Skipton the Burras never looked as though they would lift to the level which has been their performances for the past two decades.

On top of this the defeats by Bungaree and Daylesford early in the season has them in a position where they need to start to have an impact against other teams in the eight.

However, Newlyn may be as difficult as any of them for Hepburn to try to do this to.

The Cats have looked to be a balanced side since the start of the season with a good mix of talent added to who they had last year and covering off the losses of players who transferred elsewhere.

A good win over Skipton in round three caught the interest of many, now is a key chance for Newlyn to show if the improvement is substantial.

SPECTATOR BEHAVIOUR CODE

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.

2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.

3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.

5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.

6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.

7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.

8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels

rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.

9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.

10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.

11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.

12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.

Lightning Premiership – 19 May 2024

Learmonth Football Netball Club

We had just under 200 girls and boys aged 12 and under participate in the Lightning Premiership round robin competition on Sunday 19 May at Learmonth.

With 21 teams entered, we had 4 pools which were made up of the following:

Pool A – Ballan, Buninyong, Creswick 2, Hepburn 1, Rokewood 1, Waubra

Pool B – Beaufort 1, Carngham, Daylesford, Hepburn 2, Rokewood 2

Pool C – Beaufort 2, Springbank, Dunnstown, Learmonth, Skipton

Pool D – Bungaree, Creswick 1, Gordon, Newlyn, Clunes

The first final game saw the winner of Pool A play the winner of Pool B which was Waubra v Beaufort 1. The score was Waubra - 6 def Beaufort 1 - 2.

The second final game saw the winner of Pool C play the winner of Pool D which was Skipton v Creswick 1. The score was Skipton - 4 def Creswick 1 – 2,

The weather changed and the Grand Final was played in moist conditions.

The Grand Final match was Waubra v Skipton with the result Waubra – 5 defeating Skipton 0.
