After a tough sixteen rounds and with just one home and away match remaining for sixteen of the clubs, the top eight is decided but there is still plenty of scenarios for changes in position in that top eight.
There will be coaches heading into today’s round hoping to get up a spot or two and potentially not have to face a club that they had trouble with when they played them earlier in the year.
The only certainty is that Dunnstown will finish the season on ten wins and 134 percent and probably the lowest of the top eight sides, as the Towners have the bye in this final round.
A loss to Rokewood Corindhap last week was a major setback for Dunnstown because it gave them virtually no chance of getting out of the bottom position of the eight and then have to face the fifth placed finisher in the first elimination final.
This is balanced off though with the fifth placed club probably only going to be on eleven wins just one ahead of Dunnstown.
Coach Glenn Wilkins will be most concerned with finishing the home and away matches with a loss before the bye.
It might mean that the Dunnstown players are in for a tougher week on the track than they may have hoped to ensure that they get back closer to their best form.
For Bungaree not to finish on top of the ladder they are going to have to have a disaster against the bottom placed Beaufort at Beaufort.
The Demons have had a few injury concerns over the final few weeks but this shouldn’t be a concern against Beaufort who since the first round have been impacted quite significantly by injuries in a list which was probably thin to start with.
Bungaree’s biggest hope is that the majority of those carrying injuries will be back for at least one hit out before a crucial qualifying final a week later against a much tougher opponent.
Beaufort meanwhile will just be looking to get to the finish line and then try to reset for 2025.
Gordon should finish second, also on 14 wins the same as Bungaree, has a slightly tougher task as they have to travel to Rokewood Corindhap who after a win over Dunnstown last week are going to be confident and will be hoping that they can finish in ninth, as some consolation to an injury ruined early season.
A win and the Grasshoppers do finish ninth, but a defeat and they are probably going to drop back to 10th.
Gordon just haven’t been able to get their full side on the ground for many weeks and even last week had to bring two new under 18s into the seniors.
Indications are that they are closer to getting most of those who have been injured back to set up for a big run over the final five weeks of the season.
Gordon will not be able to make up the 36 percent they are behind Bungaree. Their only hope of finishing on top is the unlikely win by Beaufort over Bungaree.
Daylesford consolidated their position with a comfortable win over Clunes in round 16 and effectively secured a third placed finish.
Although the Bulldogs have the only game in the top four against another finals bound opponent, in Newlyn.
The Cats have been struck by another batch of injuries and this showed last week against Bungaree when they went down by more than ten goals, not a good outcome two weeks out from finals.
Based upon this list of injuries adding to those already out for the season has put Newlyn in a tricky situation of dropping to as low as seventh on the ladder if they cannot overcome Daylesford.
This may not mean a major difference in the overall outcome of the first week of finals.
If Newlyn lose and remain on the 40 points they currently have but Hepburn win they will go to 42 points and they will swap places on the ladder, between 6th and 7th and still play each other as would be the case if the finals were starting this week.
Hepburn should be able to achieve a win and following a
large defeat at the hands of Carngham Linton last week they need it to get some confidence before finals.
At home against Creswick the Burras will start favourites and with a lot more to play for they should have the incentive to ensure that it is another win.
Unusually for Hepburn they have only defeated one other top eight side this season and that was Dunnstown, albeit their Newlyn match was abandoned early.
Their playing personnel would bring followers to think that they should have been able to have more impact in games against other finalists and last weeks 12 goal loss to Carngham Linton will leave a scar that may not disappear over a two-week period.
That may be a problem for the Burras to deal with in a week’s time but they should have little problem with Creswick.
Creswick was able to leapfrog Learmonth last week when they were easy winners over Beaufort but even if they do cause a major upset this week they can not move higher than their currently 11th on the ladder.
If Learmonth defeat Springbank then they would get back ahead if Creswick lose but in the total scheme of the season this will make little difference for either side.
The Lakies six weeks ago may have started to look at this last match against Springbank as a win, compared to when they first looked the fixture.
However over the past month when each team played Ballan it was Learmonth that came away with a loss compared to Springbank’s narrow win last week.
The Tigers appear to be setting up their Reserves side to be in a position to be able to have a good finals series but they still retain enough very good players in the senior team to add another win to the disappointing season.
Learmonth had a number of positive performances early in the season and if they had then been able to defeat the clubs around them on the ladder they may have been close enough to still be fighting for finals action but with five loss in succession in their last five games has left them some distance from finals.
Springbank may make it six losses to finish the season for Learmonth.
Skipton had to defeat Buninyong last week to secure the finals for the current top eight clubs and they did that comfortably winning by 61 points.
It also virtually secured their double chance with a top four finish, their first finish in the top four since the Emus joined the Brandt CHFL in 2011.
They are a game and just under four percent ahead of Carngham Linton and both Skipton and Carngham Linton are expected to defeat their respective opponents this week Waubra and Ballan so the Emus would stay a game clear of the Saints if that was the case.
Carngham Linton benefited from a big win over Hepburn which gave their percentage the boost which took them from eight to fifth in one dramatic move. They could lose that spot to Hepburn or Newlyn but Ballan, who have caused some angst for clubs above them at times, will need to probably play their best game of the season to cause the upset.
Skipton with a win and Daylesford losing to Newlyn could even move into third spot, but this will simply mean playing Gordon rather than Bungaree in a Qualifying final.
Buninyong will set themselves to finish in ninth even though this will probably be a win and a half outside finals action when they travel to Clunes.
Win or lose it will be a disappointing finish to a season where the Bombers had set themselves for a return to finals action after they were able to get a number of former juniors back to the club.
This week also will bring to an end the time in the Brand CHFL of a number senior coaches who have already expressed that they will not be continuing in their current roles.
The league acknowledges the work of all coaches who will be finishing up this weekend and thanks them for the time and commitment they have put into their club.
Even of you have not had the opportunity to coach your club into finals action during your tenure in the role you will have made an impression on many who have played in your teams and they will remember you as a mentor and a person who did their best to make them a better footballer and contributor to their local community.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
