With the penultimate home and away round for the season about to start it is a good time to have a look at the leading goal kickers across the league.
It appears to be a year where the defenders have had the better of more contests with only one grade having a tally leader with 50 goals and that is exactly what the leading tally is.
In the seniors in the contest for the Shane Everard Memorial Goal Kicking Award just one goal separates the leading two; James Lukich (Bungaree) and Joel Ottavi (Buninyong), with Lukich holding the lead on 49 majors, with Ottavi six goals ahead of Rhys Monument (Skipton) who is on 42.
Lukich is probably seen to be in the best position to retain this lead especially as the Demon’s will be playing bottom side Beaufort in their final match.
The Reserves leader Clint Robinson (Newlyn) has 45 goals but is a comfortable 10 goals clear of the winner of the past three reserve goal kicking awards Billie Leskosek from Buninyong. It will be difficult for Leskosek to make up the difference to make it a quadrella of four in a row.
Hayden Jenkin’s (Daylesford) is the only player in the Brandt CHFL who has made it to a total of 50 goals at this stage of the season. His lead in the Under 18 competition though is just a single one over Billy Kirby from Skipton.
This race to the league leader in Under 18s is one which has plenty of fascination about it with Kirby able to make up one goal in the margin last week when the Emus and Bulldogs played each other.
This week though Skipton play top of the ladder Buninyong which will make it hard for him to get enough opportunities to kick a bag of goals, but two will be just enough to take the lead as Daylesford will have no match due to their fixture being against Clunes.
In the final round both are playing lower on the ladder clubs in Newlyn and Waubra so it could be a significant race over the final four quarters of the season.
Under 15 is also close, with another Skipton junior leading, Caden Clark on 40 goals, four ahead of Logan Monterosso (Ballan).
Both clubs have two matches to go, Skipton have matches against second and third on the ladder, Buninyong and Waubra, whilst Ballan are playing Springbank who are two games behind the Blues and Carngham Linton who have just four wins for the season. Ballan might be in a position to give more opportunities to Logan than the Skipton can give to Caden, but four is a handy starting margin for the young Emu forward.
After Round 15 having just the single match which was bringing together two top eight clubs, Skipton and Daylesford, with the overall margins reflecting this, there are far more exciting prospects waiting this week in the match ups between clubs.
Skipton is the form club of the past two weeks defeating both Bungaree and Daylesford in successive weeks and in the process giving themselves plenty of confidence that they are equal to any club in the race for finals action.
Their domination of Daylesford was hidden by a very poor start where they found themselves five goals to zero down after 17 minutes of the first quarter.
However, Skipton then proceeded to kick 14 goals to Daylesford just another four, including 10 goals to one in the second half, to have a comfortable 37 point win.
Once they got rolling Skipton were too fast and their use of the football too slick for the Bulldogs and they were able to break Daylesford’s structure apart so that even when the Bulldogs went forward they were often just kicking the ball to two and three Skipton defenders against a single attacking player.
Skipton this week still has a challenge facing them when they go to Buninyong and go into a contest against an opponent who whilst currently still two wins outside the top eight will know that if they win both the final matches and Carngham Linton loses both their games the Bombers would play finals.
The only way this stays alive as a viable option in the final round is for Buninyong to upset Skipton.
Skipton has as much to play for themselves though, for if they win their final two games they have a good chance to make the top four and the welcomed second chance in the finals. It is hard to see Buninyong being able to improve enough on their efforts against other top eight sides so far this year to be able to upset Skipton. Which would put an end to their hopes of an unlikely top eight finish.
Even if Skipton do win their final two matches there is no guarantee that they will get the double chance which currently is in the possession of Newlyn.
As much as Skipton needs the two wins, Newlyn has a big task to get one further win, as they are still to play Bungaree, this week and Daylesford in the final round.
The Cats have a good percentage and if they can get one win over either Bungaree or Daylesford it still may not be enough because Hepburn in sixth have nine and a half wins thanks to the outcome of the abandoned game against Newlyn earlier in the year and this extra two points could get them to 46 points.
Newlyn have definitely stabilised their performance over the past month after a very wobbly middle of the season when they were continually being impacted by significant injuries. They might even
be getting back to a stage of getting a win over either Bungaree or Daylesford.
This week away at Bungaree is probably the harder of the two based upon results throughout the year, but if they can get a win it will be a big boost to Newlyn’s confidence for the following five weeks of football.
Hepburn have their toughest match of their remaining two this week when they travel to Snake Valley to play Carngham Linton but a win would set them up to remain in the race with Nelwyn and Skipton for the double chance of fourth.
The Burras line up still appears to be of a quality which could be strong enough to win the premiership if they can get all into form for the last six weeks of the year, but they have not been able to match this expectation whenever they play a fellow top eight side.
Their only win has been over Dunnstown, who they sit two points behind on the ladder at this stage. So a win over Carngham Linton will be important for their confidence leading into finals.
Carngham Linton on the other hand will have down their own calculations and know that they are not necessarily safely moving into the second finals series in succession just yet.
If the Saints were to lose the last two matches, which includes versus Ballan in round 17, and Buninyong win their two remaining games the Bombers would go into a finals spot. Each of these may appear to be long shot outcomes but they are not inconceivable.
Carngham Linton defeated Bungaree a number of weeks ago, which may prove to be the win which gives them the break which they need to hold onto eighth.
Dunnstown have a tough match up this week against Rokewood Corindhap before ending the season with the bye.
Coming off the bye themselves Rokewood Corindhap could also end up on the same points as Carngham Linton if the Saints did lose the last two games but they are almost 30 percent behind Carngham Linton so will not make up that difference.
Especially as the final game for Rokewood Corindhap is against Gordon. Dunnstown who are currently sixth will probably retain that spot if they do have a win this week and will start favourites. Due to the bye Dunnstown is the only club in the bottom of the eight where a possible scenario cannot be created to have them move into fourth spot.
They are playing well at present but the Towners of this season do not look to be quite as strong as the previous two season’s and they could not get past the preliminary final in either of those years.
Daylesford should return to the winners this round when they are home to Clunes.
Last week against Bungaree, Clunes continued their recent performances where they have been competitive quarter to quarter but are always a goal or two behind which ends up becoming what seems to be a one-sided result but is not necessarily a reflection of the general competitiveness in play.
It is hard to see any combination where the Magpies could take enough control of the match over Daylesford to manufacture a win.
Creswick have a good chance to get a sixth win for the year when they host Beaufort and in the process possibly go past Learmonth and move into 11th on the ladder.
Whilst still a fair distance outside finals contention it has been a good improvement on the four wins of the past two seasons.
Beaufort has gone through its second really tough year in a row with quite a few players who were recruited not able to get many games in due to injury and no chance to see who is going to be able to fit into a team trying to build back up the ladder.
The Crows with just one win would need to find a level of form which hasn’t been seen to this stage to get a win but they are sure to approach the season with the hope that it might occur.
Creswick should be too strong, especially at home. Springbank and Ballan might be a match with two closely matched opponents against each other. They have three wins each and just one percent between them and the winner will seal a 13th spot finish.
Ballan jumped Gordon last week to lead by nine points at the first break and then held the Eagles goalless in the third quarter but couldn’t keep the level of intensity to play a full four quarters.
The pressure against them this week will be a lot less than what they felt against Gordon and may be able to keep a constant effort and get another win.
In the final match Gordon will travel to Learmonth and should appreciate the good conditions which the Tom Ford Oval is in.
Learmonth doesn’t have the depth to match it with the top eight sides despite getting an upset win over Carngham Linton in round 1 and Gordon are in strong form at the right time of the year.
The Eagles are gradually getting back their full list, returning from injury and will enjoy the open expanses of Learmonth.
It is difficult to see Learmonth getting within eight goals of the reigning premiers.

2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family.
