The top eight ladder tightened even further last week, thanks largely to Skipton rebounding from the previous week’s loss to Creswick and inflicting just the second defeat for the season on Bungaree.
With that outcome there are now three sides locked together on eleven wins, Bungaree, Gordon and Daylesford, separated by just percentage at the top of the ladder.
Bungaree though have a handy 34 percentage advantage over the Eagles and Bulldogs, which may be a real advantage after the final three matches.
Gordon hold a two percent advantage over Daylesford.
The Bulldogs made up some significant percent last week when they defeated Waubra by 72 points.
Tipping the top two finishers is becoming one of the points of interest across the league as everyone looks at the final three rounds.
Daylesford probably has the most difficult final three weeks facing up to two other top eight sides, including Skipton this week, whereas Bungaree has just one top eight opponent and Gordon have no other matches against clubs in the current top eight.
So Gordon may have a slightly easier run home, but as Creswick showed last week there are a few clubs sitting outside the eight who would love to have an impact on the final top eight positions. Then to compound the interest even further there is just one win separating the rest of the top eight.
Newlyn have had the most unusual year that any club in the league has ever had with three matches being abandoned, but still have cobbled enough wins together to have moved back into four spot.
Last week was their most significant win of the season over Carngham Linton and was in fact their first win over a fellow top eight contender. The Cats have a tough final few weeks including Bungaree and Daylesford.
Holding onto a top four spot will require them to defeat at least one of them as well as Creswick this week.
The bonus which Newlyn has is that they built up a good percentage early in the season and have a clear percentage break over the group chasing them apart from Hepburn who are just half a game behind.
The potential fluctuations in positions is highlighted in the remaining clubs in the eight, with one win or more importantly an upset changing things dramatically.
For instance last week Skipton went from eight to fifth with their win over Bungaree, Carngham Linton went from fifth to eight with their loss and Hepburn’s loss to Gordon moved them from fourth to seventh.
In the heavy conditions which are likely to be encountered on virtually all grounds over the next three weeks an upset from strong, mature bodied clubs like Rokewood Corindhap, Buninyong and Creswick are not out of the question and throw current predictions out the window. The only hope to make finals of those currently outside would be Buninyong and maybe Rokewood Corindhap.
Buninyong a game and a half outside the eight will probably go to ninth after this week’s match but Rokewood Corindhap with the bye will probably drop two games out of the eight.
Buninyong is going to rely on beating Skipton and other teams in the bottom of the eight losing more than one match, whilst the Grasshoppers still have some control in their own hands. They play two top eight sides in the last two rounds.
The most anticipated match this week will be Skipton at home to Daylesford.
Skipton in particular needs the win because based upon other matches if they go to previous form they could drop back to seventh at least and then rely on an amount of hope to get up the ladder a bit in the last two weeks. An Emus win though could set up their run into finals.
A win for Skipton will keep them in the hunt for the valuable fourth spot double chance, something they have never had the advantage of in their previous finals involvements.
Daylesford appear to be handling the heavy conditions of their home Victoria Park ground well in recent weeks which may help them as they head to the far side of the league in Skipton.
Skipton meanwhile appeared to struggle against Creswick in the very wet conditions two weeks ago, compared to being able to more than match Bungaree on the better surface last week.
At home the Emus are generally able to make the most of the familiarity which should make it an enthralling battle.
Daylesford appear safe in the top four but two losses, with fourth placed Nelwyn to come, would put them at risk of missing a double chance.
The rest of the matches are lining up lower ranked opponents against clubs in the eight.
Waubra had a good patch around the time of the competition byes and appeared to have progressed well in rebuilding, unfortunately over the past three matches they have been unable to match any of their opponents.
This week is not going to be any easier when they host Buninyong coming fresh off the bye.
The week off after a tough encounter the week before will be a bonus for Buninyong and whilst no one will be free of fatigue and niggles at this time of the year they will be too strong for the Kangaroos. It takes a lot of imagination and favourable results, but Buninyong looks like the only club which could unseat a current top eight team, but they must win the last three.
Clunes are always tougher at home and at this time of year they have the ability to remain in the fight against Bungaree longer than when the grounds were firm, but they have tailed off quite a bit over the past two months.
Against the neighbour Creswick last week, they almost snatched an upset, losing by just one goal but Bungaree is going to be motivated to show that last week wasn’t a true indicator of either their ability or form.
It will be a slog, but Bungaree is probably going to be two or three goals a quarter better than the Magpies.
Creswick travel up the hill to face their second near neighbour in two weeks. They were just able to overcome Clunes, but Newlyn is a different proposition.
Newlyn’s win over Carngham Linton is the first sign in many weeks that Newlyn is overcoming the destabilisation that injuries had on the team’s early season form.
They still have a strong group of leaders and Sean Willmot, Dan Wehrung and Paddy Labbett continue to show that they are in good form.
The heavy conditions appear to suit Creswick who have a strong bodied group currently, but it still becomes a case of whether a club can show that bit of class on top. Newlyn’s win over a pretty much full-strength Carngham Linton indicates that they have that class.
Carngham Linton themselves will be wanting to get back into the winners list after last week and this they should be able to do against Beaufort.
Goldfields Reserve at Beaufort appears to be in slightly better condition than many of the other ovals in the league which might allow for easier scoring.
With Carngham Linton having the lowest percentage of the top eight they are going to be keen to try to add some percentage because their final two matches do not appear to be games where that will be an easy task.
Hepburn hosts Springbank and will be approaching the match with a lot more confidence than in the past two seasons.
The Tigers appear to be locked into 13th spot on the ladder
so don’t have a great deal to play for and on top of that do not appear to have the class to upset Hepburn.
Brant Haintz and Patrick Glanford continue to show as the Springbank’s best players and the clash between Glanford and Sean Tighe in the ruck will be one of the better clashes of the season.
Tighe as the reigning Geoff Taylor Medallist is against one of the two up and coming young ruckmen in the league.
Skipton’s Patrick Graham and Springbank’s Patrick Glanford are both having excellent seasons and are showing some excellent skills. The clash between Tighe and Glanford worth seeing to determine the progress Glanford is making. A Hepburn win could slingshot them back into the top four, but only if Learmonth can upset Dunnstown.
The annual Lachie’s Legacy game will this year be held at Learmonth and the Lakies after a promising start to the season including defeating Carngham Linton have really struggled in recent games.
They have not put any scoreboard pressure on whoever they have been playing and again are going to finish mid table with no chance of making it into finals and potentially could drop a couple of spots on the ladder before the end of the home and away.
Dunnstown appear to have more strength across the ground and should be far more likely to get a win away from home than a Learmonth upset.
Dunnstown have the bye in the final round so to confirm their spot in the top eight they need one more win.
Another neighbouring derby will be Ballan hosting Gordon.
After two really tough seasons Ballan has progressed a little bit with three wins and a number of further competitive performances.
The club will see some green shots but unfortunately this week is not going to help their enthusiasm.
Gordon has a total group of players who may be equal to what they have had across the past two premiership seasons.
Some of their young players have continued to mature and taken on key on-field roles whilst many of their veterans are still able to influence games.
Gordon is definitely still in the premiership window, Ballan is a few years off building into their next period of senior grade influence.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.

Highlights of your time at Skipton
2000 to 2010 what a wonderful era for our club 5 senior premierships plus a few runners up, reserves and all junior grades winning a premiership plus a great era for our netball with all grades winning at least one premiership so great for the club and many great nights for sure
Who will win the senior premiership in 2024
I really hope that we win the premiership, I think we have the players, are very well coached, but anyone within the 8 is dangerous on their day and anyone can win. But I will be supporting and cheering on the mighty emus.
