Last Saturday in some of the toughest conditions he may have faced throughout his long career Jarrod Morgan played his 300th game for Buninyong.
Over the past two decades Jarrod has been just about in every role at the Bombers, from graduating junior with enormous potential, to their leading player for a long period, to captain over many years and coach.
During his coaching period he took Buninyong to the grand final but was not able to get the chance to lift the premiership with his team mates.
Jarrod has also been a tremendous supporter of the Central Highlands Football League being a leader both as the captain and on the coaching panel of the senior interleague side which participated in the AFL Victoria Country Championships over six years.
Whilst he may be closer to the end of his career than at the start he continues to be an important player for the Bombers both in his direction to the young players who are part of the current group and in his ability to continue to get vital possessions through the middle of the ground, often in situations where it is hardest to gather.
His leadership has always been one of getting in doing the hard work and showing the way through his actions.
Well done Jarrod of a great career for Buninyong and for your contribution to the Central Highlands FL in total.
Four weeks to have an impact
With four home and away rounds remaining the chance to secure a spot high on the ladder, make it into the top eight or just cause some confusion by upsetting a top eight side is quickly running out.
There were multiple close encounters last Saturday, often due to the extreme conditions which were faced by all matches in the region, none more so than at Newlyn where the match against Springbank was abandoned at half time when players were struggling as a result of the cold conditions.
This resulted in the unlikely scenario of Newlyn having its third abandoned match of the season, however this one had reached half time and the score as it was after two quarters became the final score and a victory for the Cats.
Which enabled Newlyn to climb a few spots on the ladder due to their strong percentage from earlier in the season. They have got back to fifth spot equal on points with Skipton, Carngham Linton and Dunnstown.
However they have cannot rest this week because they travel to Snake Valley to face Carngham Linton who will be extremely keen to move a bit higher up the top eight themselves.
None of the four locked together on thirty two points are at risk of dropping out of the eight this week as they are six points clear of Buninyong, who have the bye and will be ten points behind some of this group ahead of them by the end of the round.
Newlyn’s Sean Willmott has been one of the in form midfielders this year and in recent weeks he has had good support from Dan Wehrung, Paddy Labbett and Dylan Fishwick.
All of these Cat’s will need to keep playing to this high level if they are going to match it with Carngham Linton’s strong group who they send through the middle of the ground, particularly Kynan and Tarun Raven, Brody Benson and Tyson Scoble.
The development of some of this group over the past two seasons means that the Saints are no longer just relying on Nick and Dean O’Brien to give them the drive to match it against the best sides.
The last time these two met was in last year’s elimination final which Carngham Linton was able to scrape through with a victory. There doesn’t appear to be much between these two again this season, but the home side will be favourite.
Amazingly depending on other results Carngham Linton could jump from seventh into the top four after this round. A Newlyn win might give them a jump of one spot to fourth or Dunnstown currently in eighth might even go into fourth spot depending on how they go against Ballan.
Dunnstown have what appears to be the easiest of the tasks this week when they host Ballan who have three wins compared to the eight for Dunnstown.
However, the Blues made Rokewood Corindhap work hard last week and will not be an easy opponent for Dunnstown to just go in thinking they can build percentage. The Towners are just two percent behind Carngham Linton in eighth, but it is not easy to make up ground at this time of the season with the grounds all very heavy.
The risk of going into a match thinking that it is one where you are going to aim to build percentage can be a dangerous approach as was shown last week when Creswick defeated Skipton by two points.
A win for the Emu’s could have helped secure a double chance come finals time but in contrast they now could be left in the dangerous elimination finals spots in the top eight, where they have had to struggle through for the past couple of seasons.
Over the next two weeks it is going to be crucial that they get at least one win if they are going to sneak back into the top four, they have to face the top two in Bungaree and Daylesford. They might have been thinking that they could afford to lose to both of Bungaree and Daylesford and depending on other results make the top four, however after Creswick held on by two points Skipton are facing the nasty prospect of losing three in a row.
Bungaree at home will have some advantage as their excellent new oval will be assisting in keeping players fresh, still training in firm conditions whilst other clubs are now having to work through heavy conditions at least once a week.
This is a prospect which will be worrying Skipton’s coaching group as they try to conjure up a win over the Demons, who are deserving of the position they hold on the top of the ladder.
They have been challenged early in matches over the past three games against Waubra, Buninyong and Daylesford but they have not panicked, keeping to the system they are trying to follow each week and they gradually break down the opposition to build comfortable wins.
Against Skipton it could follow a similar pattern as the Emus definitely have equal talent to those clubs in the top four but can they persist contest after contest against Bungaree. It is difficult to see Skipton being able to bounce back strongly enough to inflict a second defeat for the season on Bungaree.
Creswick now will be eyeing off a big finish to the season and try to set up the enthusiasm for a run at finals action in 2025.
The Wickers pushed Buninyong in round 11, they overcome Waubra in round 12 and then their best win over Skipton last week.
They have the chance go three wins in a row against Clunes this week who after a positive first up win over Waubra in round one haven’t really built any momentum throughout the season with just one other win over Beaufort.
As has happened in a few matches during the season, last week the Magpies contested strongly against Carngham Linton in the first quarter and were within four points but a scoreless second half of the match meant that the margin blew out.
If Clunes can start with the same intent this week they might be able to remain close to Creswick for most of the match but the Wickers appear to be further advanced in both their talent and form at present and should add a fifth win to their tally.
Gordon through a percentage boost over Beaufort last week was able to pass Daylesford and move into second spot on the ladder but to retain that spot they will need to overcome Hepburn who also moved up the ladder to get into the top four with their six point defeat of Dunnstown.
The Burras are following a very similar pattern of the past few seasons where they have quietly gone about rebuilding after a slow start to the season and appear to be ready to strike deep into finals action. They have two games against top eight sides and if they were to win both they would be guaranteed a top four if not top two finish.
Gordon like many clubs has been significantly impacted by injury but they have such a breadth of talent they have been able to cover this shortage of senior players especially since Brenton Payne has made a return to playing and is building match fitness.
After a week off against Beaufort last Saturday expect him to return against Hepburn.
Gordon may still be close to the side which has won the last two premierships, despite their continued aging there are good signs that some of their younger players are continuing to improve to take on the more senior leadership roles.
Daylesford has the opportunity to do the reverse on Gordon this week when they will try to build percentage against
Waubra, who were not able to keep with Bungaree despite a solid start to the match.
One of the tough elements of trying to build percentage now that ovals have deteriorated in condition is that it is hard to score quickly whoever you are.
Daylesford have appeared to be at their best when they build an attack from deep in defence but this is extremely difficult now because it virtually impossible to string five good possessions to a team mate when you are on muddy ovals.
The Bulldogs will win but it will probably be a tough slog for both teams.
Fifteenth and seventeenth on the ladder Springbank and Beaufort will battle it out at Wallace which was a ground that escaped the worst of the weather last Saturday not having any matches on it and the Tigers do not train on it a great deal at this time of year.
It will still be heavy and by the time the seniors get on the oval it could be in very poor condition but both sides will face the same scenario.
Springbank played well against Clunes two matches ago for a comfortable win, who they are now in front of on percentage and a win on Saturday could lift them a couple of spots on the ladder.
Beaufort will be trying to get a second win, but it is difficult to see that they have enough good players from their list available to battle it out for a full four quarters to get a win. A low score may well be the winner in this game, but the home side should prevail.
Rokewood Corindhap and Learmonth sit beside each other on the ladder in tenth and eleventh respectively but however you look at the last four weeks of the season it is very difficult to see how either can make it into finals action.
So, it is really some pride in adding another win which is all that is at stake in this match.
Over the past month Rokewood Corindhap has been going the better of the two, with a comparison of each playing Ballan at Ballan in their most recent matches and the Grasshoppers had a success whilst the Lakies fell short.
Rokewood Corindhap to win and go past Buninyong on the ladder into ninth spot, but then to have their bye in round 15 and probably be 10 points outside the eight after that with only eight points remaining available in the final two matches, who are against Dunnstown and Gordon.
At the moment the top eight teams could be the ones which make finals, but their order is going to change around a lot.
Newlyn may be the only vulnerable team based upon performances so far, but it is going to need a couple of upsets, namely Creswick defeating Newlyn next week, Buninyong finding a way to defeat Skipton the following week and all other games going as expected.
Wins to Newlyn and Skipton this week and the possibilities for Buninyong will be gone.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
