Buninyong, Rokewood Corindhap and Learmonth are all facing a big task to get into the top eight following defeats last week in round 12.
Buninyong may be just two points behind Carngham Linton who sit on the bottom of the eight but they have a tough task over the final five weeks of home and away matches if they are going to be playing finals this season.
Whilst Rokewood Corindhap and Learmonth are currently two games out of the eight after defeats at the hands of Hepburn and Ballan last week, each of them have the bye over the next two weeks so are effectively three wins outside the eight.
It will be virtually impossible to overcome that deficit.
Daylesford were expected to drop to third after having the bye last week but Newlyn did the right thing by the Bulldogs and despite a 32 point win to Gordon it wasn’t enough of a percentage boost for the Eagles and they remain half a percent behind Daylesford.
There is little between second and third in respect to the top eight outcomes when finals start as these two positions will play each other in a qualifying final, they each have a couple of hard matches in the last five rounds and Skipton is breathing down their necks in fourth spot.
The Emus are just a win behind Daylesford and Gordon but have a significant percentage advantage.
Skipton though still have to play Bungaree and Daylesford, so they also have a tough task to move higher up the ladder before finals.
Newlyn have gone three matches without a win and as a result have dropped to seventh on the ladder ahead of Carngham Linton on percentage and just half a game ahead of Buninyong in ninth.
The Cats are ruing the two abandoned games they encountered when they had virtually a full side, before injuries have resulted in them being a long way off what looked like a team capable of going a long way into the finals.
They do still retain a very healthy percentage from that early form and if they can get three more wins could even move up a spot by the end of the year.
To do that though they will have to defeat at least one team already in the top eight.
If they don’t they might open the way for Buninyong to sneak past them.
Carngham Linton was two points up at half time against Skipton last week but then were almost five goals behind by the next break and now what looked like being a chance to be a top four
team a few weeks ago has them hanging on at the bottom of the eight.
They have two top eight teams still to come in the last five rounds, with one of those being Newlyn.
Looking across matches still to come and how the top eight is set up the current bottom two Newlyn and Carngham Linton may end up hanging on by their fingernails but could see finals action.
Above them though Bungaree is the only one which looks reasonably secure to hold their top spot and at the worst maybe finish second.
This week Buninyong host Daylesford and if recent matches are an indication will be competitive but maybe are one goal a quarter of the top three or four teams.
Jack Robertson in a key defensive role can usually win his position, Joel Ottavi most weeks shows why he has been a strong VFL player and a real danger close to goal and Jarrod Rodgers and Anthony Ebery continue to remind spectators of the impact they have had over many seasons, but the next group who have the talent to do so; Aiden Domic, Jacob Coxall, Derick Micaleff and Nick Shell are not quite turning the momentum of a match in their favour for long enough to get a winning break against the top sides.
The balance of Daylesford across the ground is proving to be its great strength.
Alex Boyse and Chris Peart in key defensive and forward roles are continuing to feature each week but they are being well supported by others who a completing their role week to week including Trent Lee, Adam Pasahidis and veterans Trent Nesbitt and James Evans.
The Bulldogs have shown an ability to score quickly from deep in defence and with the Buninyong oval expected to still be in good condition allowing for quick transition they pose a real risk to the Bombers hopes.
Newlyn need to get back on the winners list this week after their past month and playing the 15th placed Springbank they would normally be expected to be able to do this.
However, the Tigers got quite a few of the top end talent back last week and comfortably accounted for Clunes in slippery conditions at Wallace.
The return of Todd Finco and Brant Haintz made a significant difference to make the most of the strong work Patrick Glanford has been doing all season.
Newlyn has a good core of talent in Sean Willmott, Paddy Labbett, Kieran Collins and Dan Wehrung who will match it with the Springbank leaders but it is the next group of players who need to stand up and take control of their positions all across the ground.
If they can Newlyn will keep Springbank from potentially jumping four spots on the ladder and retain their own spot in the top eight.
Hepburn and Dunnstown will be a good contest with the winner
holding onto fifth spot at least.
Hepburn have won four in a row and the Towners are on a streak of six, but they are separated by just half a game on the ladder and Hepburn have a significant percentage advantage.
The winner should be in fifth place and their opponent in sixth.
Both clubs have some clear matchwinners Brad Whittacker at Dunnstown has the ability to kick a big total of goals but he is likely to get underrated defender Zac Kupsch on him who may be conceding some height, but he is a tremendous negator week after week.
Bradly McKay is having a great season for Hepburn, but his impact is probably being matched by Riley Adams for Dunnstown, which should make the clash between these two a crucial factor in the outcome.
This is looking to be a game which is going to have a major impact on final finishing positions in the top eight.
Ballan is coming of probably their biggest win of the season when they defeated Learmonth by 26 points to record their third win of the year and take them past their previous two-win seasons.
This result may be enough provide the confidence and enthusiasm to find another win for the Blues and it might need to be this week against Rokewood Corindhap as they have a tough finish to the season.
On performances so far Rokewood Corindhap should be too strong but a renewed belief in what they can do can not be underestimated and Ballan at home will give a good showing of themselves but the Grasshoppers though would appear to have too many top end players to allow the upset.
Waubra were really disappointed with the outcome of their match against Creswick last week, but the Wickers like Waubra had been showing signs of improvement over the past few matches so it was always a fifty / fifty match.
Unfortunately it is difficult to see Waubra bouncing back when they host league leader Bungaree.
James Lukich returns to the his former home where he had been instrumental in premierships but this time he is shaping up to be similar key component for the opposition.
He and John Butler with four goals each last week against Buninyong will be a concern for Waubra who will send Nic Moran to one of them but it is difficult to be able to see them containing both key forwards.
Skipton at home may be faced with a determined opponent in Creswick who are playing at the top of their form at the present but they will not be able to control enough of the ground to cause an upset.
Skipton should be one or two goals better per quarter than Creswick.
Carngham Linton, know they need to keep winning to first shore
up their position in the eight but to have any chance of moving in to a higher position.
They will do when they travel to Clunes who are coming off a game they hoped to win against Springbank but were out of the running by half time when they were seven goals down.
The Magpies will be aiming to show more early endeavour but they don’t have enough players who can consistently win the ball at the contest to create an major concerns for the Saints.
Beaufort were able to defend effectively at times last week against Dunnstown, but then they would lose possession before they got within their own scoring zone, which has been a problem throughout the season.
It is not going to be any easier against Gordon, who unfortunately for the Crows are now in a finals race which might require a percentage advantage, so the Eagles are going to have to show their big bird dominance.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
