With the last break in the season completed the long run towards finals action in all grades of competition commences with six rounds of matches to go.
Most years it is a tough period of the year, in the depths of winter with grounds in very heavy conditions facing clubs as they try to maintain enthusiasm and a level of performance that enables them to either make it into the finals or at least get a couple of wins and make the season a bit more rewarding.
At the moment it might be getting very cold, but due to a lack of rain in recent months all grounds are still in good condition and even those that were played on in round 11 when there had been some rain prior to matches, they have had two weeks to recover and should be still in a condition allowing for good football before they are used next week.
Feedback which has come back to the league is that people who have come to see Brandt CHFL matches for the first time have been pleasantly surprised with the standard of play in the senior grade of football.
This is no surprise though to those who follow the CHFL every week and in some cases for many decades who have always known that it is a competition which has many high quality players and a level of play which is both competitive and attractive, that is probably why crowds at CHFL matches are consistently so large.
Across all grades of football down to under 15 there are fourteen clubs who have at least one team in the top eight in a grade, and of those who are outside the eight there is still hope that they will get a team in finals before the home and away season finishes.
The seniors top of the table clash between Daylesford and Bungaree last round didn’t give many clear answers to any questions which were being asked prior to the game.
Bungaree won to regain the top spot but Daylesford’s poor accuracy will mean that the Bulldog’s fans will still have plenty of confidence that they can defeat Bungaree in a future meeting.
Bungaree has the opportunity to go a game ahead this week when Daylesford has its bye and the Bulldogs will potentially drop to third on the outcome of the third and fourth placed clash between Gordon and Newlyn.
Bungaree though will not have an easy task when they have to face a desperate Buninyong who are hanging on in ninth spot, behind eighth placed Hepburn on percentage only.
That percentage difference at present though is seventy two percent, so the Bombers simply need to win because they are not going to make that amount of percentage up in the remaining five matches that they have.
Coming off consecutive losses to Springbank and Carngham Linton, Buninyong were able to get back into winning form last round against Creswick but this victory was only by 10 points over a team which has won just two matches, so the Bombers would not have gained a great deal of confidence from it.
This past three week cycle of matches had a major impact on Buninyong dropping from a solid position in the eight to being at risk of missing finals, especially as they still have three games against teams in the eight.
However, the positive approach will be that Buninyong is setting itself to win each of those key matches heading towards the end of the season and ensure that they get themselves into the finals.
Bungaree is going to be a tough ask for the Bombers though and the visitors will not be starting as favourites.
Creswick’s performance against Buninyong was one of their better efforts for the year and will give them plenty of confidence as they line up against Waubra this week.
The Kangaroos were up and about before their round 11 match against Carngham Linton and at quarter time they would have felt that this improving form was continuing when they lead by three goals.
But by half time they were 18 points down and the game had pretty much got away from them.
Against Creswick though Waubra will be believing that they have a good chance of getting their fourth win for the year.
However, Creswick’s percentage indicates that they may have the better ability to score and Dane -Francis Whitfield in particular is a dangerous mobile threat for the Wickers.
At home Creswick on the back of their strong effort against Buninyong look the likely winner.
Carngham Linton and Skipton have been strong rivals for decades and this week there is as much at stake as has ever been the case since the two clubs joined the Brandt CHFL in 2014, with the teams sitting sixth and fifth on the ladder and the winner having a good chance of going top four.
Playing at Snake Valley might give the Saints an advantage as they look to have the stronger mid-field at present and it is a ground where goals from the mid-fielders is more prevalent than on some other venues.
If Carngham Linton can get on top in the centre it will be a hard for the Emus to control the scoring opportunities.
On the other hand Skipton might have an advantage in their tall marking options especially close to goal with Matthew Cullinan a great target.
Justin O’Brien though is consistently in Carngham Linton’s top few players and looks to be the most likely match up for Cullinan.
The only disadvantage in this for Carngham Linton is that it might drag O’Brien closer to goal than he has been playing this year where he has mainly been intercepting across half back.
The winner of this match moves clear of a group of six clubs who are currently within half a game of each other from fourth all the way down to ninth.
If Gordon defeat Newlyn the Carngham Linton vs Skipton winner
will move into fourth. That is unless Dunnstown has a massive win over Beaufort and jump past both of them.
Gordon will be favoured to defeat Newlyn as the Cats are still really hindered by the breath of injuries which they have at present.
Gordon themselves are not immune from the impact of injuries but after the week off from the competition bye they may have been able to get some players back.
Despite the many injuries Newlyn is not an easy beat for any opposition and last match made Dunnstown play through to the finish even though the margin was 34 points.
Dunnstown started quickly as has been their pattern all season but then Newlyn won the last three quarters but couldn’t decrease the initial six goal margin by very much.
Gordon have tended to be grinding their opponents down this year rather than setting up a big margin early, and fourteenth placed Clunes were still within 22 points at three quarter time, before the final 29 point margin.
Newlyn has enough talent to be closer throughout the match and cause what would be seen as being an upset. After consecutive defeats they will be benefit immensely if they can get a win which would shift them up to third spot again and result in Gordon dropping out of the top four completely.
Rokewood Corindhap and Hepburn is an equally important match for both clubs, with the Grasshoppers one of the form sides in the competition in the past few weeks and are now close to the edge of the top eight.
Hepburn are six points ahead of Rokewood Corindhap at present sitting in eighth spot and with Buninyong also on six and a half wins up against Bungaree, Rokewood Corindhap could be just two points out of the eight by the end of the round.
It is a bit difficult to judge Hepburn’s form over the past month as they haven’t had to play another team in the top eight and have been too strong for those below them on the ladder.
This is going to be a good guide of whether they have the potential to again be a force in finals action as they still have some strong opponents over coming weeks.
With the bye still to come Rokewood Corindhap just about have to win to give themselves a true chance of getting into their first finals. A loss and they are ten points out of the eight which could become 14 after round 15.
So with Hepburn, Gordon and Dunnstown to come they could sneak in if they win each of these games along with those against clubs below them but a loss will make it very tough.
Whereas Hepburn could be ten points clear of the chasing pack with a win.
Springbank and Clunes is going to be interesting to see which Springbank is able to take the ground.
One who has regained a few of their top players from injury or a
club which is not able to challenge Clunes and remain at a single win for the season.
Clunes showed against Gorodn that they are competitive and probably a better side than the Tigers this year.
So, it is expected that Clunes will get their third win and still have a chance to at least match their five wins season of last year.
Dunnstown will be at home against bottom placed Beaufort who is another club which has lost many of their better players to injury.
The Towners are the fifth club in the group with seven wins but they have the poorest percentage of this group and with the bye in the last round of the season their position is still at some threat.
So a big win for Dunnstown will help them to breath a bit easier.
Ballan hosts Learmonth in the last game and initially it looks like the Lakies should be able to get their sixth win and remain close to the bottom of the eight.
Ballan have put in some improved efforts this year compared to the troubles of the past two years but they haven’t been able to convert this improvement into wins.
They will be a dangerous opponent for Learmonth but are unlikely to get a third win for the year.
Patrons are reminded that for their own safety and the viewing comfort of others, that they must remain outside the playing arena fence for the duration of each game. Sitting between the fence and boundary line is not permitted. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.

U13’s Coach, A grade Coach and player
Number of years with the club 6 Years
Previous playing /coaching experience
Libby is an established player in the Central Highlands region. She began her decorated career as a junior with Hepburn. She played many years at Hepburn before enjoying some well earnt family time. She has in the past, (a lifetime ago according to her) played for Ballarat Pride in the VNL and enjoyed being pushed outside her comfort zone. Libby joined Rokewood in 2019 as a player after moving out to the region with her family. Libby took over the helm at Rokewood in 2023 with fellow superstar Kate O’Meara, both enjoying their first joint coaching role together. Libby is now the head coach of our U13 teams and a playing coach to our A grade.
What have been the highlights of their career in Netball?
A recent highlight was coaching Rokewood’s A grade team last year with Kate O’Meara and both managing to take out the Central highlands netball league Best & Fairest (Kate) and Runners up (Libby). Something we believe may not have been accomplished before at an A grade netball level. On a family level, her favourite highlight is watching her kids thrive in their netball and football within the Rokewood Community. No trophy beats that or sharing the experiences with her kids!!
Who do you expect to be the most difficult club to defeat this year?
Newlyn
Other than your club, who do you think will be the premiers in 2024?
I hope Newlyn take out the flag. Humble, local talent.
