Congratulations to all who were involved in the Junior interleague program which reached its conclusion last Sunday at Buninyong with the matches against the Colac DFNL at U13, U15 and U18 levels.
Overall it was a successful day for the CHFL teams with wins in the Under 13 and under 15 matches and a narrow four point loss in the under 18.
Under 13 and under 15 have generally been tough age groups for the CHFL in these matches but last week both teams played to a very high level and showed that there are some strong players coming through in the youngest grades of league.
The Under 18s controlled a great deal of play throughout the match but were not able to kick accurately and with 12 behinds had every opportunity to snatch another win for the CHFL.
Both of the Under 18 teams had many players who are currently playing senior football within their league and it showed in the standard of play, especially the quality of the marking, in perfect football conditions.
A major thanks to the each of the coaching groups and support for each team. Under 13 Sean Duggan, Mick Anderson and Paul Harris, Under 13 Rohan Thorne, Jim Haire and Andrew Bykersma and under 18 Jim Ford, Travis Ford and Leo Simpson.
The management of the total program by team managers Col Weightman and Simone Smith has always been outstanding and was no different this year and for the trainer support from Bec Smith, along with many parents assisting in first aid roles or as time keepers.
Thanks to Buninyong FNC for hosting the matches last Sunday and the support they provided to make it a successful day. Also thanks to Learmonth FNC and Bungaree FNC who enabled training to occur at their venues in the lead up to the matches.
The biggest thanks and congratulations of all though goes to the players themselves who embraced the program fully and their behaviour and gratitude which they showed to these volunteers throughout was exemplary and commented on by many.
When volunteers see the manner which they are appreciated it makes them understand how important that it is for the players to be part of the junior interleague.
Last Saturday in the senior football there were upsets and other results which have tightened up the ladder considerably but the top two look to be ahead of the rest in form and the opponents they are still to face.
Who is the best of the top two will be seen this week with Daylesford hosting Bungaree, who is coming off the bye.
Daylesford are currently sitting on top but the Demons have a game in hand, with Daylesford to actually have their bye next up in round 12.
So the winner will be on top of the ladder going into the
competition wide bye on 6th July.
The Demons may have been able to get some injuries back after the bye which could help their depth and this might be important against Daylesford who appear to have been able to keep most of their best side on the ground each week.
Bungaree has a significant percentage advantage which will take them back on top with a win which could be built into a handy advantage over the following rounds.
It would also create an enormous group of clubs clambering over each other to get a top four finish.
In the reverse though is that a Daylesford win will mean that coming into round 13 after the bye they are still going to be in the primary spot which their performances to this stage of the year deserves.
It looks that either result for Daylesford based upon the matches to come will not overly hurt their endeavours to finish top four and potentially top two.
This definitely looks like the match of the season so far and should attract a really healthy crowd out to Victoria Park.
Gordon has given themselves a chance to go second after this week but it was a close run thing with them just holding out by three points over Skipton and getting past them into fourth spot on the ladder.
These two have played a number of close encounters and if they end up near each other when finals arrive it could be another great battle.
This week Gordon host Clunes and will be expected to win, but it will be interesting to see if they are able to get a few of their many injured players back.
If they don’t then coach Brenton Payne will probably continue to play and get closer to qualifying for finals. If his body holds together, he will be a crucial addition into the Eagles team.
Skipton meanwhile has the opportunity to bounce back from this close defeat when they face 16th placed Springbank.
Springbank paid a big price for their upset of Buninyong the previous week with Brant Haintz, Todd Finco and Andrew Challis all missing which left the Tigers exposed and it was shown with Waubra being able to win a match which they would not have expected to when they first looked at the fixture.
If Springbank don’t get back most of their missing stars this week Skipton will be too strong and at least keep themselves on the edge of the top four.
The biggest match up to watch in this game is the battle between two of the best young ruckmen in the league, Patrick Graham (Skipton) and Patrick Glanford (Springbank), are both having good seasons and have been able to give their team a lot of momentum.
Newlyn lost their first match of the season to Rokewood Corindhap last week which was a real bonus for the
Grasshoppers but it was also a sign that the Cats might be just starting to feel the effects of the mounting injuries.
In recent weeks Newlyn has been hanging on after having a few players being were ruled out for the rest of the season earlier in the year but more players are being lost week on week and now they have a real challenge this week when they host Dunnstown who have progressed nicely in the past few weeks.
Two losses in a row for Newlyn could see them in a group of four on seven wins but hold onto fourth spot with the healthy percentage they have built in their wins so far.
Will Henderson has returned to the form of his past few seasons and Patrick Britt is an excellent tall defender who is having a really good season for Dunnstown and between them they have the ability to control Newlyn’s tall forward strength of Kieran Collins and Thomas Carey.
If they do the Towners will remain in the eight. A loss though could see them drop back to ninth depending on other results.
Hepburn is one of those who has the potential to get back into the eight which they are currently sitting outside by two points.
For the Burras this is a vital week against Learmonth, who are just half a game behind and a slightly better percentage.
Learmonth have had some strong wins over opposition lower on the ladder to give themselves the chance to be right on the edge of top eight but they have some really tough games to come and the only way which they will be able to make it into finals is to defeat some of those above them and this week is one of those crucial clashes.
Over the past decade most clubs have found it hard to control Hepburn when they are playing at home, and the Lakies’ record is as poor as any, so it is going to be interesting to see if they are able to force the strong Hepburn mid field back into defence to stop the Burras from scoring and give themselves a chance to kick a winning total.
Carngham Linton had an important victory over Buninyong by 19 points to consolidate their 6th spot and against Waubra they have the chance to take a step into the group that might have seven wins after this weekend.
Early in the year they may have thought that Waubra were going to be a match which could be used to freshen up some players but this will not be a chance they will take this week after the Kangaroos took a solid win against Springbank.
Waubra with three wins have moved into 12th spot on the ladder and appear to be re-building steadily under the tutelage of Travis Ford and a number of younger players are becoming good contributors each week.
Whilst Waubra is not expected to be able to get consecutive wins they should be able to challenge Carngham Linton for long periods throughout the match.
Rokewood Corindhap are building with players who missed earlier weeks with injury now coming back in and having an impact.
Tom Lamb is becoming the important contributor which was expected when he was recruited and Cauis Barrenger is giving the midfield an excellent target providing value for their work.
Beaufort are not going to be able control the breadth of talent which Rokewood Corindhap will bring to the field and the Grasshoppers are going to continue a steady climb back up the ladder.
Buninyong are coming off two defeats and as a result have tumbled form the edge of the top four to be outside the eight completely in ninth spot.
This week they will be expected to be too strong for Creswick at home but they cannot be complacent or they may be at risk of missing finals completely.
The Bombers still play three others in the top eight and have the bye to come also.
A loss to Creswick could almost mean that Buninyong’s season is at crisis point.
Creswick has had a couple of tough weeks in a row facing the top two in Bungaree and Daylesford. They will be hoping to be more competitive for longer this week, but they might not be able to win enough positions to cause an upset.
This Sunday sees the culmination of the Central Highlands Netball League Representative program for 2024 when our CHNL girls play Colac and District Football and Netball League at Buninyong. Our 2024 representative program has seen our selected players flourish under our wonderful coaches and enjoy the many opportunities to train and play netball at a higher level.
The Netball Victoria Association Championships was our ultimate day out playing some of the best teams in the state and competing extremely competitively in all grades. The Championships are a talent identification pathway for both players and umpires with many being recognized over past years. From this years Championships, one of our lovely umpires Charlie Cahir has already been recognised and invited to join the Talent academy.
This year we have also competed at the Ballarat Netball Association tournament with all grades recording wins in some games. This tournament was an impromptu competition for us and after only 2 weeks of training was a successful team bonding experience.
Our games against Colac and District FNL on Sunday will push our girls to bring out their best as they are fierce competitors who always perform to a very high standard. It would be lovely to see some of our club supporters at Buninyong Sunday to cheer on our girls and finish off our representative program with a solid and enjoyable
performance. And on behalf of the girls, I would like to express a big thank you to our coaches, team managers and especially our parents and guardians for being patient with our training schedules and delivering your girls to and from without complaint! We appreciate you!
Get along and watch our girls!

Patrons are reminded that for their own safety and the viewing comfort of others, that they must remain outside the playing arena fence for the duration of each game. Sitting between the fence and boundary line is not permitted. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.
