PRELIMINARY FINAL - INTRODUCTION

Brandt CHFL Preliminary Finals

During the past week the final league presentation dinner, the juniors best & fairest dinner was held at North Ballarat Sports Club, celebrating the performances of the under 15 and under 18 football grades.

It is always an enjoyable occasion which brings together clubs to enjoy each others company, and watch the counting of the votes of the best & fairest award in both grades.

The under 15 count was very exciting with five players in contention to finish either first or second after round 16.

Nash Cleary (Nelwyn) led on 27 votes, Alex Wise (Buninyong) and Harry Collins (Skipton) were second on 26 votes and James Pace (Ballan) and Thomas Kinnersley (Waubra) were third with 23 votes.

Nash increased his lead with one vote, James joined Alex and Harry on 26 votes in second and then Alex finished with a best on ground performance to snatch the win with 29 votes.

It was excellent to have such a close contest and highlighted an even season across the under 15 grade with many clubs performing quite well during the season, with just two wins separating the top five clubs on the ladder.

Logan Monterosso (Ballan) was presented with the leading goal kicking award for the grade with a total of 46 goals for the season. He finished three goals ahead of Caden Clark (Skipton).

The Under 18 Best & Fairest was also still in dispute with one round to go with Zac Spencer (Springbank) (24 votes) holding a three vote lead over Adam Leonard (Daylesford) (21 votes) and Seth Wall (Skipton) (20 votes) one further behind.

Springbank, Skipton and Daylesford had big wins in the final round so there was a strong chance that each of the leaders would feature in the votes.

However, it was only Zac Spencer who recorded votes with a best on ground, three votes, to win by six ahead of Adam Leonard and Seth Wall third.

The Under 18 goal kicking award was a tie between

Hayden Jenkins (Daylesford) and Billy Kirby (Skipton) each on 55 goals for the home and away season, 14 goals clear of third placed Aidan Fletcher (Gordon).

After the semi-finals last weekend, the top four senior teams have progressed through to the Preliminary Finals supporting their performances of the 17 rounds which they had set themselves up in to get into the top four.

Both semi finals were played in tough conditions over last weekend, with a very strong wind towards the Ballarat end of the ground at Learmonth and regular rain periods throughout the match at Buninyong on Sunday.

These prevailing weather conditions may end up having an impact by the end of each of the preliminary finals as both Bungaree and Daylesford who will be coming to the end of 12 tough quarters of finals football and it is expected that they will be finding it difficult to perform to the level which they may need to, to get a victory.

Bungaree’s 33 point win over Dunnstown could be seen as being an easy win but with just a five point margin at three quarter time it wasn’t until very late that they were comfortable that it was going to be Demon victory.

The Bungaree, Ballarat Trophies and Gifts CHFL Team of the Season trio of James Lukich, Ben Simpson and Thomas Wakefield all showed why they had been selected in the team with strong performances, with Lukich’s five goals crucial in the final margin.

Ben Dodd and Clay Bilney were also key players giving Bungaree plenty of momentum. Dodd in particular was able to create many opportunities through his clean delivery deep into the forward line.

All of these will be key players in this week’s first preliminary final on Saturday against Gordon.

Many predictions throughout the season has had Gordon versus Bungaree as the likely grand final but that changed with Skipton upsetting Bungaree two weeks ago and now it is a key clash to get the chance to play off the Saturday after.

Both teams are full of experienced players who are able to win the crucial contest, their perception of what it means to the flow of the game is evident contest after contest.

PRELIMINARY FINAL - INTRODUCTION

Gordon to see time and again the ability to at least halve the contest and bring about an opportunity for team mates to get to them to potentially move the football closer to their goal.

Jordan Clampit showed in the qualifying final last quarter against Daylesford his class with two goals which you would expect from top level senior players who have the ability to turn a game for their club.

Bungaree probably have a slight advantage in the ruck with Dallas Martin being able to have a vital impact against his strong Dunnstown opponent Thomas Wardell and this week he may have a height advantage.

Macauley Griffiths can be a dangerous target forward but this week he may need to work more through the midfield to take on Martin and Chris Cowan.

The week’s break will be an advantage for Gordon as the Demon’s appeared to have a few players who looked very sore by the end of the match and it will be a race for them to be at their best for this chance to get into the grand final.

Daylesford has also had a tough couple of weeks of finals but now get their chance to make its first grand final since 2012, which was the end of a run of six grand finals in a row.

Their opponent Skipton will be even more excited as they attempt to get into its first ever senior grand final in the CHFL since they joined the league in 2011.

The Emus are in their third successive finals series, but this is their first preliminary final.

However they are not entering as an inexperienced finals group as many of their team have been part of successful clubs in other leagues including the Ballarat FNL.

They will also bring in plenty of confidence as their last meeting with Daylesford in round 15 was a 27 point victory at Skipton.

One feature that Skipton will not be wanting to repeat out of this match though was its slow start. They were five goals to none down after 15 minutes, but then were able to get back to their usual style of a well structured defence which strangled the Bulldogs whilst they were able to score freely.

A feature of the Skipton style of play is that they like to get back into the corridor when they are forward of centre and as a result they can be a difficult team to defend against.

Usually key forward Rhys Monument and ruckmen Patrick Graham and Matthew Cullinan and Josh Draffin have been able to stretch whoever is trying to contain them.

Josh Webster and Ben Krol are key defenders for the Emus who are able to win many body on body contests against whoever is thrown forward against them.

Declan Phillips, Jacob Maddocks and Mitch Gilbert have also been in excellent form over the past month setting up a steady stream of scoring opportunities through the midfield.

Daylesford though have the ability to bring the game into a tough battle of contest after contest, making sure that any delivery into the forward line is under pressure.

Over the past two finals they were able to keep this style of play occurring, apart from the last 15 minutes against Gordon, two weeks ago.

They will need to keep this as their mode of operation this week but will be slightly impacted in this area with Chris Peart missing this final serving a one week suspension from the semi final last Sunday.

Alex Boyse has probably been the stand out player for the Bulldogs across the season and his command across the half back line is a key in getting the football back into dispute to give the small brigade a chance to slingshot forward again.

Skipton will be hoping to be able to have Ben Lusby back this week to then make Boyse spend time having to defend him so that he can not be the attacking key for the Bulldogs.

The week’s break for the two Qualifying Final winners Gordon and Skipton may prove to be an advantage as the matches go deep into the fourth quarter, but expect two close matches.

SPECTATOR BEHAVIOUR CODE

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.

2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.

3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.

5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.

6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.

7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.

8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels

rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.

9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.

10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.

11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.

12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.
