Grand Final Action Arrives

A feature of the grand finals this Saturday at Mars Stadium is that three of the four teams which finished the season on top of the ladder in their competition have made it through to the grand final, reflecting their overall season, Bungaree in seniors, Springbank in Under 18 and Skipton in Under 15.

The other top club Rokewood Corindhap in the reserves went as close as possible to making this four top of the ladder teams in the grand final when they finished drawn with Buninyong at the end of regular time last Saturday. Requiring extra time to decide the grand finalist.

Amazingly this was Buninyong’ second draw in successive finals and again they came away with a win following the second period of extra time.

Last weekend’s preliminary finals had most clubs within the league still involved in matches either in football or netball and this weekend there remains a healthy 11 clubs still with a chance to win a premiership.

The senior preliminary finals also had unusual outcomes as both of the losing qualifying finalists, Bungaree and Daylesford having excellent wins, meaning that each of the senior grand finalists has lost a final but have still been able to progress through.

It highlights the advantage of making the top four and the security blanket of the double chance.

Bungaree continued its excellent form from the semi final against Dunnstown when they were too strong for Gordon, stopping the Eagles campaign to win three premierships in a row.

It was a tough contested game apart from the third quarter in which Bungaree was able to use the steady wind and break clear with seven goals to two which ended up being the five goal margin which the Demons had over Gordon.

In the final quarter both teams had periods where they were able to attack but Gordon was not able to break down the Bungaree defence to replicate a scoring bonanza.

Daylesford vs Skipton on Sunday was an even tougher game with both clubs finding it hard to score in the strong cross wind which made it hard to score at both ends of the ground.

As a result there was only eight goals for the whole game and Skipton couldn’t score a goal after quarter time.

The excitement remained in the match well into the last quarter though with the Emus remaining within reach if they could find just a five minutes burst of run and accuracy, but it wasn’t to be.

Bungaree’s last premiership was a decade ago in 2014 and Daylesford ended their run of six grand finals in a row with their last premiership in 2012.

So both clubs are sure to attract a big crowd of supporters hoping to see another premiership in their cabinets.

It is the first time the two clubs have matched up against each other in a grand final.

A further interesting aspect is that both clubs have played as the Demons and in the same styled jumper during their history.

Daylesford was the Demons in the Ballarat FNL until they joined the CHFL when they become the Bulldogs and changed to their current jumper.

Both clubs feature many players who have been strong performers in other leagues, which are generally ranked as higher than the Brandt CHFL and

they are going to bring a style of football which should suit a grand final contest.

Bungaree appears to enjoy being able to get the football to the outside of the contest allowing for quick movement and setting up one on one contests for the dangerous forwards of James Lukich and John Butler.

They will rely on Mitch Comben, Ben Simpson, Ben Dodd and Lachlan Thornton to be key players in breaking the lines with their run to stretch the Bulldogs defenders with attacks deep into their forward fifty.

The Demons have plenty of scoring options in addition to Lukich and John Butler with Thomas Elliott, Joel Mahar, Simon Butler and Isaac Quick all able to use the extra space of Mars Stadium.

Daylesford meanwhile have appeared to be at their best during the finals when the game is a tight contested match and then enabling one of their smaller forwards to get out the back for an easy shot close to goal.

Across their three finals so far they have only been able score just 14 goals, albeit in tough conditions, which in normal circumstances is not going to win too many finals.

If predicted difficult weather conditions are again what faces both teams it will assist in giving some advantage to the Bulldogs.

The return from suspension of the strong body of Chris Peart will assist in improving the Daylesford attack on the football through the midfield.

As will the expected return of Alex Boyse into the key centre half back role. Boyse has probably been the Bulldogs most crucial player throughout the season and he will have a key task on potentially Chris Cowan.

Other important midfielders will be Matthew and Travis Dean and Jordan Schroder who has been probably the Bulldogs best player across the finals series.

Daylesford will also have an advantage in the ruck with co-captain Ben Jones, but Bungaree have a trio of talls who they have been moving though the ruck which they hope will wear Jones down.

In the reserves grand final Bungaree are probably going to start favourites with the total list available due to both the seniors and reserves sides into the grand final. It will mean that quite a few who have played many senior games are going to be in the reserves.

Meanwhile Buninyong have had to come from seventh on the ladder to get through to this weeks game and in the past two weeks have defeated Rokewood Corindhap and Newlyn who had finished first and second on the ladder so they are clearly in excellent form and will take the game up to the Demons.

Springbank and Daylesford were only separated by 14 points when they last played in the qualifying final three weeks ago and just one point separated them at three quarter time in this match.

The Tigers are going for premiers and champions having not lost a match to this stage of the season, but it will be a tough challenge against Daylesford.

Skipton are also going for an undefeated season when they take on Ballan in the under 15 grand final, who they were able to defeat by 44 points in their qualifying final.

However, the much younger Ballan team look to have improved and learnt through the final series and should be able to compete for much longer than in the earlier final, but Skipton have got the older side which should help them to take out a second under 15 premiership since 2011.

CHNL President's Report 2024 - NETBALL

Grand Final 2024 has arrived! The day where all of your hard work and dedication comes to fruition and the day where we crown 7 new Premiership teams. To the Club representatives, Players, Coaches, team managers, first aid etc and especially to the CHNL committee, thank you for all you have done and congrats on making it to this big day.

With 8 clubs represented over the 7 games today, we will see some fierce competition to finish off another wonderful season.

This year has been an extremely successful season to celebrate with 1568 players registering across 7 junior and senior grades and some net set go participants too. We have seen a full compliment of clubs represented in our D grade competition for the first time and it will culminate with inaugural D grade premiers, Gordon, facing off again but up against Clunes this time. Clunes have come from fifth to take on the minor premiers who will be looking to go back to back!

Our 13 and under girls take the court first with strong favourites Waubra taking on Rokewood. They finished one and two on the ladder with Waubra getting the upper edge at their one meeting to finish the season undefeated and will go in very slight favourites I would think.

Rokewood then front up in the 15 and under also, meeting Gordon in this one. Once again these two teams finished one, two with Gordon being undefeated in this age group. Being top of the table at the end of the home and away season should mean we are in for some tight contests.

Bungaree take on last year’s premiers Hepburn in the 17 and under final and in the first Qualifying final Bungaree had the upper hand with a 4 goal winning margin. Bungaree also got up in the home and away season so Bungaree should go in favourites to end Hepburn’s premiership streak.

Bungaree also feature in the C grade final and take on Learmonth. They sat at top of the ladder together but Bungaree got the win back in round 3 by just 3 goals so this one could go either way.

B Grade sees Learmonth face another Gordon team. Learmonth’s only blemish to the year was an early draw with Buninyong but they have been incredibly strong

since then and will be hard to beat, but Gordon won’t let them have it all their way after finishing a close third at the end of the season.

The main game of the day sees neither of the top two teams from the ladder playing off after Daylesford and Hepburn both had very successful finals series to grab the two spots available on Saturday! After finishing the home and away season undefeated Learmonth could not hold their lead in the prelim as Daylesford ran over the top of them in a 2023 grand final repeat. Hepburn also had their hands full against Beaufort last weekend up until three quarter time where Hepburn started to pull away. These two grand final teams met right back at the start in round one with a 12 goal win to Daylesford but with so much netball between now and then, things can change a lot.

I presume rivalry will be strong between the neighbouring clubs and to be honest, I don’t have a clue as to who will walk away with the trophy in this one!

Hopefully the weather gods are looking after us today so we see some high quality netball and close games to round out the season! Good luck to all teams competing and thank you to all involved in another wonderful season for the Central Highlands Netball League!

Thank you

SPECTATOR BEHAVIOUR CODE

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.

2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.

3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.

5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.

6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.

7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.

8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels

rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.

9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.

10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.

11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.

12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.
