However, in the qualifying and elimination finals this weekend there remains 15 clubs in action with many clubs having more than one team involved but no club has all four of its possible teams remaining.
Along with the netball finals 17 clubs will have teams playing across the four venues this weekend.
Despite this high number of clubs involved there are teams who are finished and getting a chance to come along and show support for others from their club is really important for your community club.
There are always some good opportunities to stay actively involved with your club over the next month.
It might be assisting in match day roles which your club will need filing for the teams still in finals.
Or it could be being part of your club’s crew when you have either the catering or booth.
These activities still provide an excellent opportunity to keep your friends from the club together and in the process helping the club have some on field success or assist in boosting the club’s finances.
It is also important at this time of year for all players to remember the people who have gone out of their way to ensure that you are able to play your sport throughout the season, your club’s volunteers.
This might be your coaching team, the club’s committee, the people who make sure the oval and its surrounds are cleaned after a home game or clean the changerooms each week after training and home games.
Then there are the many volunteers who will have spent a lot of hours in the canteen or in the social rooms throughout the season to make these successful ventures for the club. These may even be your fellow players who have taken the time to get involved in these activities.
Everyone of these people deserve a special thanks from you for what they have done to make your club a welcoming and important part of your community.
If you take the time to thank these volunteers it will be a great step towards making your club somewhere where more people want to be part of.
In the senior football Bungaree ended up finishing on top of the ladder 33% clear of Gordon who finished the season on the same 14 wins as the Demons.
So this gives Bungaree with the slight advantage if they are able to get a win in this first qualifying final as they would get to play in the Saturday preliminary final in two weeks time.
However they have a tough task in front of them to get to the preliminary final as they have to defeat potentially the inform team of the competition, Skipton.
Since the round 13 loss to Creswick, Skipton has defeated Bungaree and Daylesford, two of the other top four clubs.
So they will have a good level of confidence that they can match it with Bungaree this Saturday.
Bungaree hasn’t necessarily been the highest scoring club throughout the season but they have been the best defence which is a trait which is often more important in finals.
They have been an excellent lockdown team with key defenders Dalton Murphy and Joel Gallagher often having the task on the opposition key forwards and then the class of Ben Simpson creating the opportunities for attack with his excellent use of the football.
This has resulted in very quick movement of the football from half back to deep into attack with James Lukich and John Butler in particular benefiting as primary targets and if they don’t mark the ball it creates opportunities for Joel Mahar, Ben Dodd and Thomas Elliott.
The biggest concern for Bungaree is that Simpson and Dodd have missed a lot of matches in the second half of the season and it will be hoped that they are full fitness for this qualifying final.
Meanwhile Skipton have added two important players over recent weeks who have been causing a lot of problems for everyone they have played.
Gilbert a former Geoff Taylor medallist hasn’t been available for large parts of the season but he has been able to get back to fitness and form in recent weeks and is getting a lot of important possessions through the middle of the ground, adding to the impact of Patrick Graham and Declan Phillips who have both had excellent seasons.
Ben Lusby joined the Emus in July and has taken a few weeks to get back into form after an extended period of not playing but now seems to be offering an excellent avenue towards goal though half forward.
One feature of the Emus is that they are prepared to attack through the centre corridor making it very difficult for defenders to cover of all options. This should be a super qualifying final and the excitement of finals action may be enough for Bungaree to reverse the result of the round 14 clash.
The second qualifying final is also going to be a great clash between Gordon and Daylesford.
The Eagles despite having won the past two premierships seem to have progressed through this season under the radar,
being able to cover a large number of injuries to some of their key players, with many of them out for a significant part of the season.
Captain Gerard Clifford hadn’t played since round 10 until his return last Saturday and he really made the most of the opportunity by showing that he may be able to bring a freshness into the team for the next month.
Billy Grifith was managed for much of the season, but since returning in late July has shown the class he is known for and has become an important goal scorer. Along with Jordan Clampit they have a dangerous small forward and roving combination.
Along with club legends Mick Nolan, Ben Schiltz, Adam Toohey and Brendan Sutcliffe it is easy to make an argument that this will be a three peat for Gordon.
They will not have it easy against Daylesford this week though, a team which has plenty of players who have a wealth of finals experience, including being part of Werribee Districts, Western Region FL premiership last year.
They are a strong contested team with Trent Lee, Chris Peart and Travis Dean, and they are at their best when ruckman Ben Jones is playing. Jones has only played two matches since June, but last week may have been just taking the chance for a rest before finals.
Gordon was the first team to defeat the Bulldogs this year and probably have a stronger team now than early in the season so will start favourite.
The elimination finals are always fascinating as well with the end of the season the result for the loser of each game.
There is just one win between all four who have finished in fifth to eighth and Carngham Linton who finished fifth were close on the heals of fourth placed Skipton and they might be looking all the way back to round 1 when Learmonth caused an upset, for the missed double chance.
That is not to be now and they have to win to get through to the semi-final weekend for the second year in a row.
A month ago the Saints seemed to be bouncing around on the bottom of the eight but strong form since has them shaping as a real threat to go deep into the finals and maybe even a grand final. They have obvious class with Nick, Dean and Justin O’Brien, Tyson Scoble, Matthew Knight and Kynan Raven.
Then on top of this a few others have developed well or settled into CHFL football this season such as Tom Clark and Brody Benson.
This week against Dunnstown they are going to probably have plenty of confidence following a solid finish to the season, which included a big win over Hepburn in round 16.
Dunnstown meanwhile have gone two weeks without a win thank to the bye last Saturday and a loss to the dangerous Rokewood Corindhap in round 16.
Overall they probably haven’t been able to have a significant impact against any of the other clubs in the eight despite having a strong playing list across most of the ground.
Their key forward Brad Whittaker is as dangerous as any in the league but he really has only had the one big day out so far for the Towners. He might be primed for a breakout final.
Whilst at the other end Will Henderson is an outstanding key defender who can pitch hit in the ruck or ruck rover and Patrick Britt has had a really good season at full back.
Through the midfield they have been well served by Riley Adams, who missed the last match and Dunnstown will be hoping he has returned to full fitness, Mitch Tuddenham and rover Kain Dickson.
The last final is an interesting scenario as Hepburn and Newlyn have not played out a match this season. They were one of the abandoned matches earlier in the season.
Nelwyn started the season in tremendous form and looked a strong top four contender then have been struck by many season ending injuries and have had to fight hard to get through to finals action.
Their last two matches have been Bungaree and Daylesford, a tough end to the season against top four finishers, and they were a bit off the pace against both.
Dan Wehrung remains one of the key leaders for the Cats and he is getting great support from Sean Willmott, Paddy Labbett and Seamus Murphy-McKay.
Also Kieran Collins in front of goals a real danger for Hepburn. Whilst Nelwyn is severely impacted by injuries they might not be any worse off than their opponents this Sunday in Hepburn.
The Burras came out of their defeat at the hands of Carngham Linton with many of their key players at risk of missing finals, with none of the McKay brothers playing last week against Creswick, which ended up being just a one-point win for Hepburn and almost had them finishing in eighth rather than sixth.
They do still have a strong group available even if those injured are not able to come back including Izaac Grant, Sean Tighe, Jordan Grant, Tom Brown, Jackson Carrick and Ricky Ferraro.
This game is going to be a fascinating clash like the other three, maybe the many years of finals experience across the Burras list will be enough for them to get through to semi-final action.
The best eight teams remain from all four competitions which play finals; under 15, under 18, reserves and seniors, and this is always a great weekend of matches which is going to attract a big crowds to all venues.
Patrons are reminded that for their own safety and the viewing comfort of others, that they must remain outside the playing arena fence for the duration of each game. Sitting between the fence and boundary line is not permitted. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels
rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.
