On Wednesday evening the senior footballers and netballers from each of the Brandt CHFL and CHNL clubs came together to celebrate the season at the Senior Best & Fairest Dinner. It was a great chance to recognise some great performances during the season both individually and across total clubs. The Merv and Mary Howard Memorial Champion Club recognises the performances across four grades of football and seven grades of netball within the club and is eagerly sought after by all clubs.
Learmonth this year has won the champion club award for the first time just ahead of Springbank and Newlyn in third place. This a great effort by the Lakies and brought a lot of satisfaction across the whole club community. It was one of the most exciting counts in the Geoff Taylor Medal for the senior best & fairest in years with last year’s runner up Sean Tighe from Hepburn taking a step forward with a one vote win over Springbank’s midfielder / forward Todd Finco.
Gordon coach Adam Toohey was just one vote back in third place and Learmonth’s hard working mid fielder Will Green one vote further back in fourth place. Sean Tighe’s win is even more commendable when his season is looked at in detail, as he only played twelve of the sixteen possible matches of the season. His ruck work has in the past two season’s been a vital factor in Hepburn’s success. The reserves best & fairest award was also a very tight affair with just three votes between the top five players, however it was a very popular win when Daylesford veteran Robert Rodgers (20 votes) won ahead of Springbank’s team mates Scott Baldwin (19 votes) and Alex Wethling (18 votes) in second and third respectively.
This season’s winner of the Shane Everard Memorial Goal Kicking Award was Andy McKay (Hepburn FNC) with 70 goals, five clear of Adam Toohey (Gordon). McKay has possibly been the most outstanding player in the league over the past fifteen years and adding this award to his other honours highlights his all-round ability wherever he plays on the ground. The reserves goal kicking award was won by another veteran of the league Billie Leskosek with 50 goals, six clear of Dunnstown’s Kirby Neville with 44. The Ballarat Courier Coaches Award was a clear win to Newlyn midfielder Callum Currie who has impressed many in his first season in the CHFL. He was eight votes clear of Benjamin Jones (Daylesford) and Will Green (Learmonth). Carngham Linton’s Brody Benson was the Under 18 best & fairest winner in 2022 and has this year shown that this was a true reflection of his potential and his performances in the well performed Saint’s senior team resulted in him being selected as the Brandt CHFL Rookie of the Year winner. Ballarat Trophies and Gifts Team of the Season is always eagerly anticipated and has ended up as a dream team again, highlighting the quality of senior football across the league.
Backs: Kynan Raven (Carngham Linton), Mark Gunnell (Gordon), Josh Thompson (Clunes)
Half Backs: Ben Krol (Skipton), Jackson Starcevich (Newlyn), Ben Simpson (Bungaree)
Centres: James Thompson (Springbank), Brant Haintz (Springbank), Will Green (Learmonth)
Half Forward: Todd Finco (Springbank), Adam Toohey (Gordon), Aiden Domic (Buninyong)
Forwards: Andrew McKay (Hepburn), Rhys Monument (Skipton), Flynn Stevenson (Dunnstown)
Rucks: Sean Tighe (Hepburn), Callum Currie (Nelwyn), Dean O’Brien (Carngham Linton)
Inter: Benjamin Jones (Daylesford), Ben Dodd (Bungaree), Will Henderson (Dunnstown), Joe Mahar (Bungaree)
Coach: Andrew Challis (Springbank)
Captain: Adam Toohey (Gordon)
This weekend there are going to be two outstanding senior grade preliminary finals between the ladders top four finishers.
Both Hepburn and Bungaree had to work hard to overcome fifth and sixth placed finishers Skipton and Carngham Linton respectively and demonstrated that their form over the season is reflective of their position in the competition. Now they each need to take the next step to overcome Springbank and Gordon who have had the benefit of a week of recovery. Saturday’s match between Springbank and Hepburn is a repeat of last year’s preliminary final which the Tigers won with the last kick of the day. Are they as closely matched this year, will have had some contemplation across the past week or has one club been able to create an advantage?
Springbank have added Brant Haintz and Fergus Toose as two who have been key players across the season, whilst Hepburn has brought back juniors Finn Anscombe and Jackson Carrick and both are class players. In the ruck Sean Tighe will be against Springbank’s tall youngster Patrick Glanford. At worst they can probably nullify each other but Tighe’s ability to win clearances could give the Burras an advantage at stoppages. Especially as the experienced mid-field group of Dan O’Halloran, Ricky Ferraro, Brad McKay and Mitchell McKay set up to take advantage of this strength of Sean Tighe. Springbank’s James Thompson has had an excellent season and may be matched against Liam O’Halloran who has had his best season in the league. Springbank probably has a forward line advantage with Stephen Staunton in good form and Todd Finco very hard to stop for a full four quarters. Finn Anscombe will probably get Staunton and when Finco is in the forward line Zac Kuptsch looks like a good match up. It is very unlikely that Andy Mckay will be back for the Hepburn forward line this week, but they are showing that they have a broad range of players who are scoring for them. Since round 3 the Tigers have been the club in the best form in the league and will start favourite but Hepburn are the most experienced finals team in the competition which will be a benefit for them.
Gordon still has their back to back premiership hopes alive but they are going to come up against a Bungaree who looked to return to near their best form in defeating Carngham Linton. Joel Mahar was outstanding in the semi final dominating the game and setting up the Demons time and again, especially in the first quarter seven goal burst. He will be a player that Gordon needs to stop to ensure that he doesn’t light Bungaree up early. A player with speed will be required for him and it might be that Billy Griffiths is sent to see if his ability means that he gives the Eagles the spark to take control of the game. Ben Simpson was crucial for Bungaree in blunting the Saints last weekend, whenever they went into attack. However, there are probably going to be more options available to Gordon which will test the Demons defender being able to drop off as the spare man. Gordon will be without their injured coach Adam Toohey, and experienced defender Gerard Clifford will be touch and go to be back, but they still can call on a number players such as Brendan Sutcliffe, Macauley Griffiths or even Zack Ryan to provide tall marking forward options. The return of Luke Gunnell into the ruck in the past few weeks has provided the flexibility up forward which will stretch the Bungaree defence. Both teams are blessed with quite a few speedsters who will make use of the large expanse of Buninyong and the football will move quickly from one end to the other and make for an exciting clash.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.
Last week our netballers bowed out of the finals and all gave their best. The U15s came the closest to rolling forward going down by one point. Well done to the respective coaches and support team. Thanks to Barney for co-ordinating the booth for the Learmonth final this weekend.
Wednesday Night was the league vote count and well done to the senior footballers and Netballers that did well.
We must also wholeheartedly thank the Ballan Bowling club for their support throughout the year use of their facilities and tremendous help at our social functions. Our new facilities are tantalisingly close to completion. At last.
The junior Presentation day is set for Sunday 17th September and Senior Presentation Night on Friday 22nd September with both at Donegans farm.
Well our young Crows are showing us how it’s done.
The Under 15’s had a great win over Learmonth last Saturday and have earned a spot in todays Preliminary Final against Springbank at Learmonth. It promises to be an epic game with 1 v 2 from the home and away season set to battle it out for a Grand Final berth.
Good luck young Crows, we are all behind you.
Today also sees our Under 18’s in a Preliminary Final against Rokewood over at Learmonth. The boys earned last week off and will be keen to get out there and try to secure their shot at a much deserved Premiership. Good luck boys we will all be there to cheer you on to victory.
Last Saturday sadly saw the end of the season for our fantastic A Grade Netball girls. They came up against a very good Daylesford team and despite battling hard and at times going goal for goal with them they just couldn’t overcome a bit of a slow start causing them to fall just short of making a Preliminary final. Congratulations girls on another great season and we know you will come back better and more determined to achieve the ultimate prize next season.
As ever more details and update on our facebook page that Tahlia Conroy does a great job updating.
Go BluesDon’t forget Grand Final day we have the Gate Rafgle. Some great prizes have been sourced so grab a ticket or two on the way in to the ground and help support the club as we hopefully are there to support our young Crows come Grand Final day.
Reminder that our Vote Count & Presentation Day is Sunday September 17th starting with the Juniors in the morning followed by lunch then the Senior counts in the afternoon.
See you all at Learmonth, it promises to be an exciting day for the club.
Welcome to our members and supporters to the 3rd week of CHFL finals series. We have 5 teams competing in the finals in both Football and Netball.
It was a strong weekend for the club with all but 1 team progressing through to a preliminary final.
Our under 17 Netball couldn’t quite get the job done against a very strong Springbank side but have had a very good season in 2023. Our thanks go to all our players and our 1st year coaches in Sophie Wade and Amy Maher.
B and C grade netball continued their winning form with wins over Newlyn and Ballan respectively.
Our D grade girls were the only team representing Bungaree FNC on Sunday and recorded a very strong win over the highly placed Learmonth.
Our senior football team started very strongly to go into the quarter time break 40 pts up. The Carngham-Linton side then found then found their mojo to take it right up to our boys for the rest of the game with the seniors winning by 13 pts.
This week sees us challenging the reigning premiers in Gordon in the Seniors and Newlyn in the reserves for the right to play in this year’s Grand Final.
Good luck to all teams involved, We know you will do us proud.
Sadly U13, B & A Grade were all knocked out in last week. Congratulations on making it this far. A nailbiter in the B Grade going in double overtime.
Lets get around the Netball this weekend!

A HUGE thankyou to everyone who helped out last Saturday on the BBQ, in the Canteen, emptying bins, stocking fridges and everything in between. It was a massive day and we could not have done it without you!
Go Bombers!
Well the incredible ride that has been season 2023 for our senior footballers came to it’s conclusion last Saturday , but amid the initial disappointment of falling tantalisingly short of securing a Preliminary Final berth , soon emerged an incredible sense of pride with what Clayton and his playing group had achieved over the course of the year and again on Saturday.
Giving up a 40pt lead to a very slick Bungaree outfit by quarter time was certainly not part of the pre game script and at that point it looked like a sad ending was beckoning to an otherwise unbelievable season, and the boys could be forgiven if the tank had run dry after such an emotional journey , but alas , like so many times this season they found a way to stay in the contest and for large parts of the game post quarter time they had the ascendancy , seeing the margin pared back to just 9 pts at the final break.
Ultimately it came down to the Demons making better use of their attacking forays and despite us ending up having 7 more scoring shots over the day , the final scoreline of 12.7 to 8.18 told the story of the day.
So there it was , a season that seen a 13-5 , win loss ratio , a maiden finals appearance , finals victory, 4 first time wins against opponents in our time in the CHFL , an appearance from Dave Mundy , just a sample of many highlights.
Congratulations to our Reserves Footballers for their gutsy effort at Learmonth last weekend. Although we lost it's been such a great season achieving so much reaching week 2 of finals.
Congrats to Ash, Pud and the team and cant wait to see how far you will go next season.
Thanks to all our supporters for attending, the cheering was massive and we hope to see you all again this weekend at the netball.
Our finals hopes now sit with B Grade Netball, led by Coaches Molly, Alysha Christine and Tegan we wish our girls all the best against Bungaree. You've done it before you can do it again!
Lets cheer loud and get them into the Grand Final! Anything can happen.
Congrats to our award winners who attended the League B&F on Wednesday Night, so
Most importantly , there is a real belief that Scobes has instilled in the group and a sense that this is just a step on special journey , rather than a one hit wonder and almost immediately post Saturday , thoughts were turning to how we can further improve our standing in 2024.
We now look to wrap up the formalities of the season , kicking off this Saturday at Learmonth where the club has been allocated the food catering for the first of the weekends Preliminary Finals. This is a major commitment , requiring plenty of hands on deck to ensure the day runs as smoothly as possible. Our catering manager Alison Wilson has posted a roster for the day on the club social pages , however if you have not been allocated a spot , you will definitely be welcomed to join any of the shifts that suit your schedule.
Also a further reminder of the presentation events for both senior & junior grades as below :
Friday 22nd September - Presentation evening for senior grades of both Football & Netball at the Ballarat Golf Club ….. ( a link has been placed on club social media pages to secure tickets as bookings required )
Sunday 24th September – Presentation day for all grades of junior football & netball at Carngham Rec Reserve
GO SAINTS !!
great to hear the Clunes name spoken of throughout the night.
Bree Lewis was Runner Up in D Grade, coming out of retirement to be part of the first ever D Grade Side, a lovely defender who reads the play!
Alannah Trevisan our B Grade GS, what a lovely payer to watch she plays a great game and is well respected by her team mates.
Josh Thompson also made Team of the Year which is a huge effort! JT is one of our strong leaders up forward kicking goals, closely watched by many of our juniors!
Let get around the B Grade Girls today!
All the best, play hard and play strong netball as you've done all season!
Committed United Proud.
Huge congratulations to the 8 sides representing Springbank FNC over the course of the weekend, we wish you all the best & we are so proud of each of your regardless of the result.
Next Weekend we have our annual end of year celebration (September 16th) at the club rooms from 7pm. We will have a marquee set up on the night with a band for entertainment, this is a whole club function to celebrate the season we’ve had.

Well it's exciting times for Daylesford netball. After many years battling to make a finals appearance, we are so proud of our U13A and A Grade netball teams who play in preliminary finals this Sunday at Buninyong.
1st year coach Kyra Windusss has done an incredible job with our U13A team. Their commitment to training and willingness to learn, have seen the girls develop into a very tight competitive team.
Our senior girls have gone to the next level this year under coach Carly Luke. Carly has put in a mountain of work
included. The night is semi-formal attire. Any dietary requirements please speak with Alana O’Neil. Tickets are available on the club website. Saturday Night we will head back to the Red Lion Hotel for drinks & meal.
Carn Tiges!
into the team over the past 12 months which has translated into their on court performances. Last week's win over Beaufort was inspirational and was our senior team's first ever finals win ever!
Good luck to both teams this weekend.... Go Doggies, you got this!
Congratulations to Rhys Monument and Ben Krol on making the CHFL team of the year. Congratulations to Sam Willian for only being 5 votes off the leaders in the CHFL best and fairest, when he was only able to play eight games. All three have represented our club particularly well and are a pleasure to have as “Emus”.
Unfortunately the senior campaign ended last week , so we are reliant on our under 17 netball, under 15 and 18 football to wave the Emu banner. All support for our young sides will be helping spur them on to further success.
Thanks very much to all that helped out with the catering at Learmonth on Sunday, a very successful and well organised day running the canteen.
All eyes on Buninyong as we hope to have three sides advance to the Grand Final, I know everyone is confident that they will give their it their best shot.
Last Saturday the Under 18s thankfully had the double chance which meant that we had players back from injury and it was time to have a crack at Skipton in the Semi-Final. The boys again acquitted themselves well but the tremendous effort the week before had taken its toll and we just couldn’t quite match it with the opposition and unfortunately our season had come to an abrupt end.
Last Sunday was also not the ending the Under 15s were looking for unfortunately but Glenn is still proud of the way the boys went about it this year. From looking unlikely to make the finals to getting through week 1 the boys continued to raise the bar all year, and best of all they did it by playing hard but fair football. Not once during the year did any of the boys allow an undisciplined opponent take their concentration off the football nor did they make the football their priority. It is a great bunch and while the result is disappointing, the future is bright and we really hope they stick together.
Our C Grade netballers had a convincing win against Newlyn and now face Buninyong in the Preliminary on Saturday.
Keep in mind our Junior presentation day on Sunday week, followed by our senior presentation night at the Ballarat trotting club on the 6th of October. Tickets are available from try booking.com.
Good luck to our Under 13A, C Grade netball, D Grade netball and Senior Footballers all playing preliminary finals this weekend.
The senior presentation night will be held on 22nd of September - stay tuned for further details.
As Always, Go EaglesToday sees us return to Learmonth for the 3rd week on end to take on Springbank in the Preliminary final in a repeat of last year's prelim and hopefully the results will be reversed.
Last year the boys felt heartbreak when Springbank slotted a major in the dying seconds to advance through to the grand final and left us wondering what could have been had we kicked straight.
Both line ups will be a little different this year and at present Springbank would be going in a favourites after beating us throughout the year where bad conversion again cost us.
In that game both sides were missing key players so this encounter will be a totally different ball game.
Last week's victory showed that when we bring the determination and commitment we can beat anyone and we must bring it this week. Big Sean Tighe showed why he is the best Ruckman in the league and dominated the aerial battle and Mitch returned to last year's form up forward slotting 5 goals to set the win up.
Well, it’s been another great week to be a supporter of the Learmonth Football Netball Club. Despite mixed results on the court and field, the club enjoyed terrific success at the CHFL/CHNL awards night mid-week.
In football, both junior sides were unfortunately eliminated from the finals campaign, with the U/15’s beaten by the minor premiers in Beaufort who suffered a shock defeat the week earlier. This stung them into action, and they showed their class over a gallant Lakies outfit that will only benefit from their 2023 finals experience. And the U/18’s ran up against a bigger Rokewood outfit who had a solid win despite a good showing from Jim’s boys.
On the court, we had big victories in both the U/13’s and U/17’s, with the latter getting back to their best form after a hiccup the previous week. Unfortunately, we said goodbye to the campaign of our D grade and the very unlucky U/15’s who lost by one goal that was disallowed on the final siren after the match went into extra time.
The u17 and 15 netballers are also through to the prelim with the u17 on Saturday and 15's Sunday.
The 17's had the luxury of the week off last week and should be well rested and ready to go
The 15s played an epic Battle against Ballan and came out victorious by 1 goal after leading by 6 at 3 quarter time.
Well done girls and good luck and no matter the result on the weekend the club is extremely proud of you dedication and efforts throughout the year
This week we have 6 sides in Preliminary finals action. Reserves footballers are primed after the week off, as are A, B and C netball. The U/13’s and U/17’s are hoping to carry on their form into the GF also. Good luck to all sides, and please be sure to show your support to both codes as we look hopefully towards a big Grand Final day.
And congratulations to the following club members for their outstanding achievements at the league count. Jamie Gigliotti (D grade B&F), Emily Findlay (B grade B&F), Shianne Milera, Katelyn Sutton, Kaitlyn Balazic, Jordan O’Keefe (CHNL team of the year), Will Green (CHFL team of the year) and ALL members who contributed to the club being awarded the Merv and Mary Howard Shield for the club aggregate (champion club). It was the first time since 1979 that LFNC has achieved this, despite finishing second many times.
Well done, and congratulations to all. Let’s keep it going! Go Lakies!!
Week three of the finals will feature our Reserves football in a cutthroat Preliminary final as well as having our U15 and D Grade netball teams competing. Congratulations to all of our coaches, players and support staff on their efforts and achievements throughout the season to have such a big presence in the finals is just reward for some outstanding work and a fantastic achievement. The Newlyn Football and Netball community will be out in force this weekend supporting our teams. Last week’s Reserves win against Dunnstown was an exceptional effort after getting off to a strong start the match levelled out until the third quarter where the guys-controlled play setting up a match winning lead, Liam, Gunn Leo Bell and Fraser Lowe were in good form hopefully the boys can continue their good form this week and lock in a grand final appearance. Over on the netball court. The B Grade team put in a great performance but unfortunately ended their season with a 31 to 39 loss whilst the C Grade girls also suffered a loss going down 20 to 38. The D Grade girls have kept their season on track with a powering away to a 27 to 10 win all the best girls. Our Juniors have performed admirably throughout the season in the U17s the girls put in a terrific effort but went down 36 to 19. The
U15s worked hard in an exciting contest taking the points in extra time 40 - 39 setting themselves up for a preliminary final.

This season, Bendigo Bank Central Highlands F.L. is providing all senior players and clubs with a new SMS communication service through RedTxt. The service is FREE for registered players and officials
You will receive relevant football information weekly, such as the results for your competition via SMS to your mobile phone. You will receive the results on Saturday afternoon between 6 and 8pm for the senior grade matches. At the foot of each SMS will be an advertiser’s message which pays for the transmission of the SMS. Please note that all advertisers have been approved by Bendigo Bank CHFL.
To ensure all players and officials receive this free service it is essential your mobile phone number be listed in your club’s SportingPulse database. As the SMS service may also be used to send out information about the competition it is a condition of registration that you agree to receive information via SMS. Therefore, there will not be an opt-out mechanism in the SMS.
If you do not wish to receive the SMS please contact the Bendigo Bank Central Highlands F.L. on 0448 524 429.
