It is always exciting during the finals series to see clubs as they progress through to the next stage through winning and then get the opportunity to play in a grand final. The Brandt Central Highlands FL is actually in a unique situation as the only district football competition who play on an AFL venue for its grand final. What an amazing opportunity for players at this level, both juniors and seniors, to play in a stadium environment. It is always worth looking at the players when they get their first opportunity to run out onto the oval and see the clear excitement that they are experiencing. Across the total of community football in Victoria for so few to get this opportunity, which will probably be the only chance to play on an AFL standard venue ever for most, cannot be underestimated. A big thank you to the City of Ballarat and its ground staff for the assistance to play on such a high quality venue.
The senior grand final is a repeat of last year’s grand final with Springbank and Gordon lining up against each other. They each had hard fought preliminary final wins with Hepburn making a late charge which scared Springbank who looked to be comfortably sitting on a lead of more than 20 points well into the final quarter.
Gordon and Bungaree were locked together on even scores for much of the final quarter after Bungaree had probably had the better control of the game for most of the match. The Eagles were able to find a way to score a couple of key goals and get home by a mere six points. In last year’s Grand Final Gordon dominated for most of the game and were comfortable victors over the Tigers, but this year looks to be a much closer prospect with Springbank probably going into the decider as a slight favourite. Springbank’s mid field is stronger than it was last year with the important addition of Brant Haintz this season taking them to another level. Haintz might look small but his hard approach at the ball and classy finish when he does get it has so far proven to be a key gain for Springbank. He is not on his own though with Chris Quinlan, Harry Twaits and James Thompson in particular who are currently giving great drive which is generally providing opportunities to retain possession well into the forward line. Geoff Taylor medal runner-up Todd Finco has been in tremendous form all season and with five goals in the preliminary final showed that he is Springbank’s most potent avenue to goal. However, despite these individual strengths it is their total defence across the ground when they haven’t got the ball which has taken Springbank to another level this year.
Coach Andrew Challis has really set the team up well this season and their ability to restrict Gordon being able to get the football out of defence easily will be so important. Gordon is going to need to be precise in their delivery so that they maintain possession and get the ball into their forward half. Adam Toohey is a key for Gordon to enable them to have a prime goal kicker as there are not many others who shape as being able to raise to kick a big bag of goals for the Eagles. Mick Nolan was able to provide a lift for Gordon’s struggling forward line last week against Bungaree and he may need to go forward again this week. The biggest bonus for Gordon out of the preliminary final was that the two key players coming back from injury Adam Toohey and Gerard Clifford appeared to get through the match and will be improved for the run.
Mark Gunnell is in excellent form at full back and it should be a major clash between him and Springbank’s Stephen Staunton. Whilst Springbank have a strong mid-field, they will be challenged by the excellent Gordon group of Tye Murphy, Billy Griffiths and Ben Frazer who provided excellent run at Buninyong last week to be the key link player coming out of defence for the Eagles. Most who have followed the Brandt CHFL closely this year are expecting a closer grand final contest than occurred in 2022.
In the other three grades of football there are some major stories which is going to make the whole day of grand finals very exciting.
Newlyn have not had a team in the grand final for 20 years, but their Reserves have a much longer drought with their last grand final appearance being in 1972. Fifty-one years is long wait for another premiership in this grade. Their last appearance would have been in the former Clunes FL.
The Cats though are going to be meeting Springbank who themselves have an amazing story with all four of their football teams playing in their respective grand finals. For a club to get to this level of success shows that there is an outstanding culture at the club and its committee and administration is clearly showing great leadership.
Springbank won two more matches than Newlyn during the season but with their seniors also playing they will not be able to bring in any senior players to top up their reserves, which might be an advantage for Nelwyn.
Then there is the participation of Rokewood Corindhap in both the Under 15 and Under 18 grand finals, the clubs first ever grand final representation since it joined the CHFL in 2014. They have had a tremendous finals series with both their teams having to play each weekend with some tough matches.
The under 18 team in particular has been outstanding over the past month. They finished seventh on the ladder and have had to work hard to get past five other clubs who were higher on the ladder after the home and away season.
Springbank finished the season in second place on the ladder with five more wins that the Grasshoppers but Rokewood Corindhap defeated top of the ladder Beaufort last week so they are good enough to win.
Both Springbank and Rokewood Corindhap had 12 wins in the under 15 grade during the home and away season, with Rokewood Corindhap finishing higher on percentage, but Springbank won their qualifying final clash by 3 points so there is little between these two teams.

1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing do not force them.
2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important a victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
4. Encourage your child always to play by the rules.
5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
6. Remember your child should be involved in football for their enjoyment, not yours.
7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
8. If you disagree with an official or umpire raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abus from junior sporting activities.
10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the league and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.

Yes, the big day has arrived! Grand finals represent so much for a team and a club. They are the culmination of a long year, countless hours, triumph and heartbreak. For us, grand finals represent something even larger. Over the club's history, very few Doggies teams have played in a grand final, with only our U15's team playing in one (in 20222) in the last decade.
That's why this weekend is so massive for us. To have 2 teams playing on grand final day is outstanding (especially given how it's been for us to make a grand final in any grade or code). To have 2 netball teams playing is historic for the club!
Whatever happens on this weekend, the club can be very proud of this achievement. It signals many things for netball but most importantly it signals that our junior and senior netball programs and the club as a whole have a bright future.
On behalf of the entire Bulldog community we wish our U13A's and A Grade teams all the very best...we know you will fight hard in true Doggies spirit.
Go Doggies!
It’s Grand Final day! We have our under 17 netball representing the club. There is a high level of excitement about playing in a grand final and justified it is! All the best to all the girls, also Indi and Nat for the guidance required to get them there!
All welcome back at Skipton to support our girls, no matter the result.
The football season ended for our final two sides last Sunday. Both the under 18 and under 15 sides have put in an exceptional effort this year and despite not making it through to the Grand Final, can hold their heads high. Everyone has represented themselves and our club particularly well, with a competitive spirit that has allowed all to grow and improve.
Congratulations to coaching staff and support staff for the way they have gone about the season.
Gordon have survived a Preliminary Final arm-wrestle, to post a six-point victory overBungaree and advance to this Saturdays CHFNL Grand Final. The Eagles welcomed back into the side Coach Adam Toohey and Captain Gerard Clifford from injury. Played at Buninyong in perfect conditionsBungaree started strongly with the first three goals. Finally at the twenty first minute mark, Tye Murphy kicked the Eagles’ first goal, which triggered a swing in momentum. The hard working Zack Ryan followed with his first shortly after and when Jordan Clampit slotted another just before the quarter-time siren the Eagles were just three points down.
The second term was a hard see-sawing contest. Billy Griffiths marked and goaled before the Demons kicked the next two goals. Eagle,Brendan Sutcliffe marked and kicked truly before both defences held firm for the next fifteen minutes. Bungaree finished the first half with a sixteen point lead, thanks to two late goals that sent the Eagles’ brains trust into overdrive during the half time break.
Brendan Sutcliffe into the ruck, Ethan Crackel on-ball and Michael Nolan into the forward fifty paid immediate rewards for the Eagles. Nolan marked and goaled one minute into the third term. Ten minutes later ‘Mighty Mick’, put his body in harms way, received a free kick and kicked his second. The Demons rebounded and goaled before veteran defender, Mark Gunnell took control and led a tightened Eagles’ back half that consistently repelled Bungaree’s advances. Macauley Griffiths and Coach, Adam Toohey added late goals to edge the Eagles into the lead by a slender three points at the last break.
During the last term, with fatigue setting in, Gordon did most of the attacking but struggled to create opportunities. Bungaree refused to throw in the towel and at times played with more composure, however, they too, failed to capitalise. Both defences worked overtime until the scoreboard time-clock ticked over thesixteen minute mark. Then, Connor Ascough, as he so often does when his team needs a lift, marked and goaled. Well into time-on, Zack Ryan curled a high ball through for his second major, putting the Eagles twelve points clear. Bungaree kicked the last goal of this contest just before the final siren. The Eagles, gritty winners by 6 points!
Tomorrow our junior vote count and presentation day is on at the club from 10 am, lunch will be served and a great family day will be enjoyed by all. The last chance to catch up with friends and teammates is not to be missed!
Senior presentation night requires that we pre purchase tickets for catering purposes, please get on the facebook page and follow the link. See you there!
Indeed the Eagles did not play their best football. Lots of excuses were being tossed around but, perhaps, when all the “ifs” and “buts” and “maybes” that go with such closebattles fade away, we will all appreciate this Preliminary Final for what it was: Two good sides, desperate to continue on this Saturday. Gordons experience in consistently playing finals, maybe the major factor?
This Saturday: CHFNL Grand Final - Mars Stadium. Gordon V Springbank.
Can the Eagles win ‘Back to Back’ Premierships against our closest rival? The Eagles have a full list, they are fit and extremely keen to repeat last year’s success.
Also at stake is the Jimmy Toohey Shield presently held by our neighbours when they defeated us by 11 points back in July.
Wherever, whenever, however ‘Gordon V Springbank’ compete for victory - it never fails to entertain.
What a way to kick start D Grade at Gordon Football Netball Club. This group of 13 ladies have shown us they mean business, whilst still having fun. They have taken on the challenge of rostered games, meaning each week brought new rotations and combinations, but they have backed each other all the way. It’s been fantastic to see so many familiar, ‘retired’ faces on the court each game, mixed with a few new faces and new Mums. Making finals has been a dream, and we are looking forward to getting out there to show everyone we have one more game to win!!
Good luck to our Under 13A girls, after a great year, this group of very talented girls will play Daylesford in the grand final this week.
All supporters, members and players are invited back to the best for our grand final party after the game. Live entertainment, food trucks and drinks at bar prices.
As always, GO EAGLES!!
With the season now finished for our football department after the seniors went down to Springbank once again in a tight tussle we would like to thank all the volunteers that have chipped in throughout the year. Without all your help and work ethic our club would not be in the position it is.
We congratulate our 2 netball sides that have made it through to the Big dance at Mars Stadium and hopefully you continue on your winning ways and bring another couple of flags back to Laurie Sullivan Reserve Saturday night.
Well it was a weekend of mixed emotions for Learmonth members and supporters last week as we bid farewell to the finals campaigns of our U/13 and U/17 netball sides along with the reserves footballers. The U/13’s were soundly beaten, the U/17’s just fell short of the undefeated Hepburn by 2 goals, and the reserves just couldn’t get things going their way and never really looked in it. On the flip side, it was great to see A, B and C grade netball all win through to the GF. A’s won a tight contest by 3, B’s had an easy 34 goal win and C’s were comfortable victors by 6 goals. So lets get behind the girls as they attempt to replicate their unprecedented 2018 season when all 3 senior grades won the premiership.
On a really sour note, the clubs’ thoughts are with Jack Treweek who suffered a serious knee injury early in the reserves game, and also with Kitty Balazic who endured the most heartbreaking of injuries when rupturing her achilles with just seconds remaining in the preliminary final. We wish them both a speedy recovery.
Good luck to all sides playing in their Grand Final, and let’s make sure we cheer the Learmonth netballers to glory. Go Lakies!!
Week four of the finals is the ultimate goal for all footballers and netballers and this week it will feature our Reserves football team in a Grand final against Springbank. Last week’s Prelim win against Bungaree was an exceptional effort after getting off to a strong start the match levelled with the guys gaining a handy lead in the third quarter The last quarter was a nail biter as Bungaree fought back, to their credit the guys steadied to record a 13 point win, Wil Lund, Jack Lee, Leo Bell and Fraser Lowe were in good form hopefully the boys can continue their good form this week. Over on the netball court our U15 and D Grade netball teams competed in last week’s action but unfortunately ended their season with losses. Our U15s played on Saturday and put in a great effort unfortunately falling short 20 to 33. Our D Grade played on Sunday and put in a fantastic effort in an absolute nailbiter unfortunately they fell short 23 to 25 Congratulations to all of our coaches,
Wow we’ve made it to the grand final. What a fabulous finals round we’ve had for 2023. Unfortunately our A grade girls went out of the finals in an incredible game against Learmonth. All of our girls gave it 110% and the entire club is so proud of you. Good Luck to Learmonth in the grand final today.
D grade girls had a great match last week against Newlyn winning by just 3 goals. The way you all played makes us all so happy to be supporting our great club. Good luck today against Gordon. We know you’ll make us proud again.
Under 18s had a great game against Beaufort winning by just 10 points. This week we play Springbank and I’m sure our boys will leave nothing in the tank by the end of the game.
players and support staff on their efforts and achievements throughout the season to have such a big presence in the finals is just reward for some outstanding work and a fantastic achievement. The Newlyn Football and Netball community will be out in force this weekend supporting our Reserves best of luck to Lachy and the boys.

We’re so close to taking home 3 premierships this week. Regardless of results you have all played incredibly well throughout the year and it is an amazing effort to have made it all the way to the grand final.

Well, we have arrived at the Big Dance! The day where all of your hard work and dedication comes to fruition. The day where we crown 7 new Premiership teams and our very first D Grade grand final winners. Thank you to all that have helped us make it here. To the Club representatives, Players, Coaches, team managers, first aid etc and especially to the CHNL committee, you should all be proud of making so successfully to this big day.
This year has been a full and covid free season to celebrate with 1412 players registering across 7 junior and senior grades and some net set go participants too. There has been the very successful introduction of the D Grade competition which has seen a high standard of competition with Gordon and Rokewood playing off today as the first finalists in the inaugural D grade season. Rokewood had the win in the home and away by a small margin so come and watch a close one as we hand over our first D grade cup.
We have 9 clubs represented over the 7 games today which is a wonderful testament to the strength of our league and the work that your clubs are putting in to the development of your netballers.
Gordon is also represented in the 13 and under grade as they take on Daylesford. These two clubs have not meet since round 1 where Daylesford got the win but it could be anyone’s with a seasons worth of netball under their belts.
Hepburn are up in both the 15 and under and 17 and under finals. They take on Springbank in the younger grade and will be aiming to reverse the result from home and away rounds where Springbank got the win. The 17 and under final is a repeat of last years 15 and under grand final with Hepburn taking on Skipton again. These two played out a tightly fought draw throughout the year, so we are in for a cracker! Skipton will be aiming to claim this year’s cup after going down last year.
Learmonth are the standouts for me this year in the rest of the senior grades, playing off in A, B and C grade divisions today. Both A and B grade are looking for the title of Premiers and Champions after completing an incredible season undefeated. Buninyong will take them on in C grade after getting up over them by just 2 in the home and aways. The result was a little more one sided in Learmonth’s B grade clash with Clunes during the season, Learmonth getting up by an impressive 46 goals. Clunes will be looking to get closer than that today.
The main game of the day sees Learmonth face Daylesford. After a fierce and tight couple of games last weekend and a bad injury to a Learmonth stand out, this game could come down to the last quarter but again, Learmonth were too strong during the season and I think they may just take this year’s cup!
So, both the netball and the weather look promising and I look forward to seeing the climax of another wonderful season for the Central Highlands Netball League!
Thank you

This season, Bendigo Bank Central Highlands F.L. is providing all senior players and clubs with a new SMS communication service through RedTxt. The service is FREE for registered players and officials
You will receive relevant football information weekly, such as the results for your competition via SMS to your mobile phone. You will receive the results on Saturday afternoon between 6 and 8pm for the senior grade matches. At the foot of each SMS will be an advertiser’s message which pays for the transmission of the SMS. Please note that all advertisers have been approved by Bendigo Bank CHFL.
To ensure all players and officials receive this free service it is essential your mobile phone number be listed in your club’s SportingPulse database. As the SMS service may also be used to send out information about the competition it is a condition of registration that you agree to receive information via SMS. Therefore, there will not be an opt-out mechanism in the SMS.
If you do not wish to receive the SMS please contact the Bendigo Bank Central Highlands F.L. on 0448 524 429.
