There is a little bit of interior stylist in us all and I believe that our homes should tell a story and reflect who we are. Inspiration for interiors can be sought everywhere, in particular amongst nature.

Inviting interiors delight all the senses, including the sense of touch. This multisensory experience is why tiled surfaces are so appealing. Furthermore, tiles offer a true replication of the intricate detailing found in natural materials but without the high maintenance and cost associated.

Create a mood board of ideas as part of your planning

Creating a mood board needn’t be complicated; simply pin together images that inspire you and relate to the look you want to create. Paint colours, fabric swatches and tile samples can help you develop the look you want to create and show how these elements will work together in the finished space.

Simple changes such as new cushions or plant types from bold brights to gushing greens help to create the mood of the moment.

Every beautiful room should have a focal point to draw the eye. Incorporate a feature wall to allow your focal point to room to shine embrace blank space and remove any clutter that distracts the eye and makes a space look smaller.

Plan your colour scheme

A useful tip to help you create a cohesive colour scheme is to use the 70/20/10 ratio. 70% of your colour scheme should be the primary colour that you choose for your walls and floors, 20% is your secondary colour that will appear on items like furniture, curtains or tiles and 10% is the colour used on accessories such as cushions, artwork, lampshades etc.

We fell in love with our old farmhouse about seven years ago. It just had those good vibes and we could see the potential. However, it was a complete wreck and not in a liveable condition. We began work on it straight away so that we could move in.

What room is your most used, functional space?

This is the most used room in the house so we needed a hard-wearing floor that was not only attractive, but also worked well with the children. The Home range from N&C are large format tiles that works perfectly within the space, especially as the space is large. I chose a light colour to create a light airy feel. Bringing the tiles down into the dining area creates continuity and a seamless finish through the house which I love. There is no disconnection from room to room.

Tell us about your renovation journey?

When we eventually started the build, we wanted to make sure that the house kept a modern farmhouse feel yet was functional and worked for our growing family.

We wanted to create a spa feel in the bathroom with neutral tones & materials and was able to achieve this with our beautiful wall and floor tiles

The kitchen is the heart of our home. I wanted it to be a place which we could all use together as a family. The open plan kitchen / dining area and the large island was perfect for this. I can cook whilst the kids are doing their homework or playing.

With an eye for interiors, Kate Gurney and her husband were able to see past the old, wrecked farmhouse that was to be their future home. Taking her followers on the transitional journey on instagram (@K.Home_Design), Kate shares her wonderful home transformation with us.

What was your aim for the renovation?

When designing the master bedroom and en-suite I wanted it to feel like we had stepped into a hotel room, an escapism from the craziness of family life! The en-suite has a spa feel created using neutral earthy tones and natural materials.
