Perfect Pruning

A guide to autumn pruning, and how trimming back now can ensure the fertility and fruitfulness of UK native plants While the temptation is to wind down horticultural activity in these autumn months, there is plenty still to do, with pruning in late autumn a great idea, given that most plants in the UK complete their annual growth cycle by the end of the season. It helps stimulate the growth of young, vigorous shoots, stimulates plant productivity, and encourages better air circulation and sun exposure to inner sections.

Pruning, by cutting away dead, diseased, or overgrown branches, will also improve plant health in preventing diseases and pests.

As for the varieties that will benefit most, look no further than the iconic British rose. This is a great time to prune bush, climbing, and rambling roses, reducing their height by a third to prevent wind rock (a phenomenon that loosens

the root and hampers plant health).

Doing so will also help to prevent diseases like blackspot and rust, which are less likely to overwinter on pruned plants.

The same goes for apple and pear trees, while Buddleia, or Butterfly Bush, also requires pruning in late autumn or early spring.

Virginia Creeper will benefit greatly from a tidy-up too, while the garden stalwart Hydrangea can also be cut back.

Overall, it’s important to think of an autumn prune as a thoughtful trimming back of the season’s growth. It isn’t a call for a hard cut-back, so pursue with care and you’ll be investing in future garden prosperity.

Composers and choreographers are always using Shakespeare as a springboard, but only the greatest have pulled it off. Amongst that band are Verdi, Berlioz, Britten, Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan with their versions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Well-meaning casualties are Rossini, Auber and Bellini. What’s the difference? Sarah will be exploring this using clips from the operas and ballets, and first hand accounts from the artists themselves.

Sarah Lenton has spent her working life in the theatre. Her principal employers are the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Garsington Opera. She writes programme articles, radio and play scripts, gives lectures and broadcasts regularly for BBC Radios 3 and 4.

Explore the World's first dinosaur models hidden in a south London park. Created in 1850s, we will look into the history and science behind these Grade I listed architectural structures.

Palaeontologists began a journey to discover how these extinct animals from the deep past looked. We will explore how the professors and fossil hunters such as Mary Anning and Gideon Mantell found the fossils and created reconstructions - even dining inside one of the massive models for a New Year's Eve party in 1853. We will see how today's scientists think these animals actually might have looked.

Aaron is a professional scientist and researcher with the University of Cambridge. As a palaeontologist and published researcher he is an expert on fossils and prehistoric life from the first animals to appear on our planet to early humans. He has a passion for archaeology, history, architecture and history of art, and looks at the interface between the arts and sciences.

Tell-Tail Signs of Delighted Dogs As dog owners, we obsess over our animals and constantly monitor moods in order to ensure they are happy and content.

While most of the signs of a perfectly at-peace pooch are obvious, it pays to know when our four-legged friends are at their most sumptuously soothed.

Of all the creatures in our kingdom, dogs are probably one of the easiest to understand.

They can express sadness, irritation and need, yet it is in the pursuit of happiness that they are at their most animated and loveable.

Comfort For a dog to be happy, it must be comfortable in your presence, and this playfulness comes through in the way they request your time and attention.

So if they push themselves towards your hand when you’re reaching out to stroke them, it’s a key indicator they like being in your company.

Stance Happiness can also be seen in a dog that displays looseness in its shoulders, perhaps accompanied by soft and inviting eyes.

And of course we’ve all seen dogs splayed out, lying on their backs – this is perhaps the ultimate indicator of a chilled out four-legged friend.

For a more subtle display of contentment, a dog that stretches front legs out and raises the hind legs shows he is ready for engagement and entertainment.

Interaction When your dog is itching for you to interact with him in a good-humoured way he will usually bow his head, intimating a desire to play. Put into words, it’s a case of, “come on, let’s go!”.

And of course, a wagging tail and excited tongue is perfect indication that a dog wants a ball, stick or toy to be launched.

Bark Most high-pitched barks are synonymous with a dog who is happy, although the vocal range of some breeds is naturally high anyway.

That shouldn’t rule out a canine who expresses satisfaction with a low bark, but this will usually be gurgled and drawn out, perhaps changing tone or losing intensity at the end.

Attention When a dog’s ears are pricked, something has got their attention. It could be a noise or a sudden movement, and their curiosity will want to hunt out the mystery.

Individuality Of course, dogs have personalities and their own uniqueness, with different breeds displaying their own idiosyncrasies and quirks. Only you, as an owner, will know your animal’s mannerisms best, and this is the joy of owning an animal and getting to know them.

The Mid Sussex Dialect In 1875, Farncombe & Co of Lewes published a ‘Dictionary Of The Sussex Dialect’ by the etymologist the Reverend W.D. Parish.

He was the vicar of the church of Selmeston, a parish pronounced ‘Simpson’ and this sparked his interest in dialect. He began to jot down the words he heard that were peculiar to Sussex. The Sussex dialect is believed to have originated from Anglo-Saxon, Dutch, Welsh and English traders attempting to understand each other. The Sussex dialect had distinct East, West and Mid Sussex variations.

In Mid Sussex, Ammut-Castes meant ant hills. Ampery meant weak, unhealthy or beginning to decay and was commonly used to describe the freshness of cheese.

To Arg was to argue or wangle and Belver was to make an angry disturbance which may have resulted in a banicking (beating). A Batfowler was a person with a large folding net on a long pole who caught birds at night, but a Blobtit (a tell-tale) might inform the Bozzler (constable) of their activities. Bait was afternoon refreshment with a strong beer in the hay field. After work a person might be Beazled meaning tired. After dinner they might tuck into a Blackeyed Susan which was a pudding with plums or raisins in it, or a Bolster (jam) pudding. To Byste, was to have a lie down in the daytime and an elderly parishioner apologised to the Reverend Parish when he visited them at home and found them Bysted because of rheumatism.

To Caterwise was to go diagonally and a traveller was Boffled (confused) when told “If you goos, caterwise across the field…” Clung was used as the term to stop the collection of mown grass after its exposure to wet weather. Coager was eleven o’clock lunch for farm labourers who ate a ration of a Coager Cake.

It was a very plain cake and each one had to last a week. Dallop (like dollop) was a shapeless lump of anything played about with in the hands. A Dallop was also a parcel of tea packed for smuggling. Smugglers recruited a labourer who complained that he “Ain’t done a Dezzick (day’s work) for six months.” He was offered a Dozzle (small quantity) of food and a Downbed (bed on the floor).

A Fleed Cake was made with the fat of a pig instead of melting it into lard. To Grizzle meant to fret “I know the child ain’t well, because she’s been Grizzling all day.”

To Gudge meant to probe. “The doctor vaccinated our baby yesterday; nasty man! He just did gudge his poor little arm about.” A doctor said of a child “I think she’s hatching the measles.” A man complained “the doctor’s ordered me to dink some of this here claret wine, but I shall never get to like it, it seems so hurr.”.

(Rough-tasting) Derived from the word Anglo Saxon Handsylen meaning giving into the hands Hansel was the money a market woman received from her first sale. The coin

was kissed, spat on and placed in a separate pocket by itself for luck.

To Hob-up or Hobbing-up was to hand rear a pig. A parishioner complained that her husband objected to her Hobbing-up two piglets but revealed to the Reverend Parish she was taking them to bed with her.

A Hob-lamb was a hand reared lamb and a Hogget a year old sheep. A hop-dog was a caterpillar found in hops and also a tool to draw hop-poles out of the ground. To Hover was to look cold and shivery but was also used to describe the soil or a person measuring hops into the basket. Jacketting and Journey meant a hard day’s work but Jacket was also to flog. Kelter meant condition.

Lidds was used to describe large open fields and a Long-Dog was a Greyhound.

Maxon meant a manure heap and derived from Meox, the Anglo-Saxon word for dung. Mixen was used for a mixed manure heap. A Meresman was the parish officer who attended to the upkeep of the roads, bridges and watercourses. Mizmaze was to cause confusion. Mommick or Mamick was to cut or carve awkwardly or unevenly “He mamocked it.” A Mum-Chance was a stupid, silent fellow “He’s a MumChance lived all his time don in the mush (Marsh) and never spoke to no one.” A Nabbler was a gossip who often Norated, which meant talking officiously and fussily about other people’s business. “Norman got Nabbling over it, so it very soon got Norated about all down the street.” A Rookery was to fuss and chatter.

Scaddle derived from the Anglo-Saxon word Sceatha meaning robber or thief was used to describe a truant boy, or a cow that broken through a hedge, or a cat that stole. An expression used for the poor was “they eat Shorn-bugs (beetles) for dinner.” Thick-Milk was hot milk with spoonfuls of flour added and sugar to sweet it. Tommy was bread.

A parishioner said to the Reverend Parish “ I see there had been just rain enough to whiffle (gust) round the spire whiles we was in church.” Yeasty derived from the Anglo-Saxon Yst meaning storm. And finally to Yoyster was to play noisily.

Then SPRC could be the club for you.

We meet every weekend throughout the year and visit both East and West Sussex. There is usually a half day 5-6 mile walk on Saturdays and a full day walk of 9-11 miles on Sundays.

We appreciate everyone walks at their own pace and no-one will ever be left behind. Generally members make their own arrangements for travelling to and from the meeting point.

If this appeals to you, just turn up on a walk and introduce yourself to the walk leader. For an all-day walk, bring a packed lunch, though there will often be an opportunity to get a drink at lunch time. Holiday in Rhodes

I’m sure that you saw the horrendous wildfires in Greece this Summer.

We had booked a holiday in Rhodes which was badly affected.

Fortunately for us we were about 30 miles north of the nearest fires and the worst thing that we suffered were a few power cuts. I urge you to seek out the work of Gideon Mendel who photographs the aftermath of climate disasters. His images on Rhodes are extraordinary. Google his images or find him on Instagram.

I’m certainly not brave enough to tackle such subjects so here, for light relief, are three street photographs that I captured during my holiday there.

The main image is the street portrait painter, his work displayed alongside him, sitting in the heat under the large parasol whilst awaiting his next commission. The world goes on around him as he scrolls through his phone to pass the time. This image, in my opinion, needs to be in colour to tell the full story whilst my other image, due to the strong, directional lighting, works best in monochrome.

The diagonal shadows add drama to the scene.

The wall has round windows so I was pleased to capture a foreground figure carrying a large, round brimmed hat. It wasn’t set up, it was patience ( I

waited for a suitable figure to pass the background) and pure luck. This is an oft used technique for me, I identify a promising background and then wait for something to happen in the foreground. For me, this needs to be something or someone that ‘matches’ or compliments the background perhaps by colour or shape.

STORRINGTON FILM NIGHTS Storrington Film Nights are organised by the Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District.

The next film, on Wednesday 11th October, will be “Allelujah”, starring Jennifer Saunders, Derek Jacobi, and Judi Dench. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back by galvanizing the local community The showing commences at 7.30pm, at Sullington Hall, Thakeham Road, RH20 3PP. Roll Up Your Sleeves for a Morning of Grape Picking at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardensslee Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens is predicting a bumper 2023 harvest for its Sussex Wine and is inviting wine lovers to participate in the free annual grape picking event in October.

Visitors can spend a morning immersed in the winemaking process by hand-harvesting grapes straight from the vineyard.

With a final October date to be announced, subject to harvest conditions, the festivities kick off at 8:00 am with fresh pastries and a choice of tea or coffee to provide fuel for the day ahead. From 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, guests will receive a hands-on education in grape harvesting, gathering grapes from the vines and learning about viticulture from the vineyard experts. It's satisfying, rewarding work that gives a true taste of life as a winegrower, says Barry Anderson managing director of Leonardslee’s wine operations.

After working up an appetite in the vineyard, participants can relax and refuel. A harvest table lunch featuring light bites will be available from 12:30 pm onward. Guests can also enjoy a glass of sparkling wine from Leonardslee’s sister vineyard, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate in South Africa.

Prospects for 2023 Vintage

The grapes picked during the event will contribute to the 2023 vintage from the House of Leonardslee vineyard. Planted in 2017 across 37 acres, the estate contains over 85,000 vines and produces sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The first vintage release is in June 2024.

Leonardslee is anticipating an excellent 2023 harvest. Near perfect weather conditions this season have set the vines up for success. With no frost incidents, flowering progressed smoothly. Careful canopy management ensures good light penetration, while disease control has kept the foliage healthy for ripening the exceptionally large crop.

"The vines are showing great promise this year," said Barry Anderson. "Bunch numbers are higher than ever thanks to favourable spring weather. Our August and September climate will be crucial for ripening, but I foresee this being a terrific harvest.

This is great news in the lead up to our first major wine release in June 2024."

The UK as a whole is forecasting bumper wine yields in 2023. An estimated 18.5 million bottles will be produced this year amid ideal growing conditions nationwide. While July’s rainfall briefly dampened spirits, it arrived at an opportune time and vineyards are now hoping for sun-filled, dry weather through August and September.

Growth Trends Show Promising Future for English Wine

In addition to an abundant 2023 harvest, English wine is generally charting an upward trajectory.

There are now over 900 vineyards across Great Britain, more than double the 432 recorded in 2017.

English wine production has likewise increased rapidly, rising from 5.3 million bottles in 2017 to 12.2 million bottles in 2022.

This ascension is reinforced by mounting global interest. Exports of English wine have grown from just 4% to 7% in recent years. Industry experts predict production could reach 25 million bottles annually by 2032, signifying English wine's mounting status worldwide.

The future looks bright for English viticulture and Sussex wine, says Barry Anderson: “Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens encourages everyone with an interest in wine to join us in October to find out more and get real hands-on experience during our grape picking event this September.

Council marks Battle of Britain anniversary Horsham District Council’s Chairman Cllr David Skipp laid a wreath at the War Memorial in Horsham’s Carfax this morning to mark Battle of Britain Day. He was accompanied by Zäl Rustom (Chair) and Carol Tester (Vice-Chair) of the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion, and Sussex Army Cadet Lance Corporal Jaxon Darley.

Battle of Britain Day commemorates the pivotal air campaign won by the Royal Air Force which was instrumental in stopping the invasion of Great Britain in 1940. It was one of the largest aerial engagements in history, both sides suffered heavy losses.

In his address Cllr Skipp said: “We give thanks to all who served, in the aircrews and as ground crew, those in the Royal Observer Corps as well as the thousands of ordinary men and women across the UK who gave vital support.

“We mark their extraordinary courage and the great sacrifice they and their families made.

“We also reflect on the sacrifice of those current-

ly serving and their families, as well as civilians caught up in current conflicts.”

Every year Horsham District pays its respects to the people who lost their lives in the World War II battle of the skies, as well as armed forces personnel serving today.
