The Arts Society Steyning Village Steyning November Carols talk
Tuesday 19th December 20.00 Star Inn, High Street
Monday 13 November 2023 at 10am The Dinosaur Sculptures of Crystal Palace A talk by Aaron Hunter
The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ Explore the World's first dinosaur models hidden in a south London park. Created in 1850s, we will look into the history and science behind these Grade I listed architectural structures. Palaeontologists began a journey to discover how these extinct animals from the deep past looked. We will explore how the professors and fossil hunters such as Mary Anning and Gideon Mantell found the fossils and created reconstructions - even dining inside one of the massive models for a New Year's Eve party in 1853. We will see how today's scientists think these animals actually might have looked. Aaron is a professional scientist and researcher with the University of Cambridge. As a palaeontologist and published researcher he is an expert on fossils and prehistoric life from the first animals to appear on our planet to early humans. He has a passion for archaeology, history, architecture and history of art, and looks at the interface between the arts and sciences.

Carols have been sung in the fields and streets of this country since at least the fifteenth century, and although nowadays carols are more associated with church and chapel, there is a much older tradition of seasonal singing by ordinary people in ordinary surroundings, including the pub! Traditional Seasonal Singing from the folk tradition has taken place in Steyning just before Christmas every year for the past ten years or more, and we are again delighted to be the guests of the Star Inn in the High Street for 2023.
Everyone is welcome at the Star at 8pm on Tuesday 19th December for an evening of atmospheric, communal singing of songs and choruses, including some well-known traditional favourites to get your Christmas off to a great start!

Food & Drink Festival Comes to a Close !
Some wonderful times have been enjoyed over the last few weeks with great Festival events and superb special offers from various local businesses, all taking place within Steyning & the surrounding District. To touch on some of the happenings during these last closing weeks: The Artisan Bakehouse baking courses were very popular with many fully booked; Great Walks taking place - The Tasty Countryside Walk, headed up by Hilary Winter & Ian Alexander, taking in The Fox at Small Dole and Tottington Manor at Edburton, for refreshment stops; The wonderful Pubs & Brew-

Al this of The final Saturday took in the annual and unique Pumpkin Weigh, held at the Farmers Market. The whole market was abuzz with a mass of people all enjoying the sunshine and, of course, the superb selection of stallholders. As 11 o'clock struck crowds gathered around the weighing machine to find out who was Champion Pumpkin Grower this year. Weighing in at 49 kilos - yes 49 kilos ! - Derek Crush's mighty beast was declared the winner. Also, in the happy atmosphere that pervaded the High Street, several "Tasting Mornings" were taking place. At Awen, JaJu coffee was being served up by
Sarah & Justin Brown, owners of this beautiful furniture showroom; further down the Street Amanda Hutton of Vintage & Home was hosting an event, with Charley Lowe happily encouraging chocolate lovers to taste the many flavours that are made by local chocolatiers, Cocoa Loco. At The Sussex Grocer, further food tastings were in progress. So another successful Festival has taken place as always thanks to the support of our wonderful sponsors and, of course, the hard work of our volunteers who just "keep going" and make up the Committee. Sorry to see it all end again, but already looking forward to next year !

Sussex Surnames
A surname originating in medieval times was often based upon which village a family came from, or a landmark near where a person was born.
For example the Sussex (in particular Old Shoreham) surname Bridger relates to being born near a bridge. A surname could also be based upon social class. The surname ‘Threel’ which was once common in Sussex referred to a person who was unfree so a serf or servant. A surname could also be derived from a first name used in baptism. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the name ‘Robert’ was listed as holding land at Ashington as a tenant of William de Braose. A surname might also derive from a person’s physical description or character trait and thus the descendents of Robert came to be known as the Savage family. Savage is the modern day spelling which in 11th century Sussex translated as the surnames Silvaticus or Salvagius or Silvatinus or le Sauuage. A Robert Salvagius, which could have meant ‘Robert who lived in the wild land,’ was witness to a late 11th century charters granted by the De Braose family. Another witness to a charter of Phillip De Braose concerning land at Bramber and Sele, Upper Beeding was William de Puintel. The surname is hereditary and the modern day spelling is Pointel, which is a village in France. The heritage of the Pointel family in Sussex can be traced back to 1160 and to 1093 in the lands of William De Braose in Normandy, leading back to his estate official Robert de Punctello. In 1096, Simon Comes witnessed a deed drawn up by Phillip De Braose and his son also called Simon witnessed charters concerning Bramber from 1125 to 1147. The Comes surname originated as a nickname. The Counte or Conte families living in 14th century Bramber were probably descended from Simon Comes. The Merewe, Merowe and Merwe families of 13th century Steyning were descendents of a steward and estate official of the De Braose family.
of Chichester. The Tartcortais surname was a nickname meaning ‘slow and courteous.’ In Sussex the surname Cobbe was a nickname meaning big and stout and the Cobbes lived around Bramber and Steyning from the 13th century. Another surname was Woolgar, derived from a personal name listed in the Domesday Book. 13th and 14th century records show the Woolgars living at Steyning. Their descendents are known to have also lived in Henfield in the 17th century. A surname also sometimes originated from a family’s occupation. William le Thunder also spelled Tundur held lands at Steyning and Bramber in the 13th century and the surname derived from the trade of shearing cloth. John de la Quarer meaning ‘John of the quarry’ was a bondman to Sele Priory and his son Henry also became a servant to the priory. The surname Schepman meaning shepherd was unique to 13th and 14th century Bramber. In 1642 in the Protestation Returns of West Sussex listed 19 men as having the surname Washer, living at Botolphs, Steyning, Storrington and surrounds. The surname derived from their occupation of washing sheep. After the Lidbetter (Lead Beater) family moved to Washington in 1524, for generations Lidbetter became a common hereditary surname among the yeomen and farmers of Steyning and Bramber. Some Sussex surnames were unique; originating from the fact the county was in olden times geographically cut off from the rest of Britain by steep forested terrain and marshland. The only way to successfully trade was to travel to the coast and then proceed inland. Inevitably, many traditional Sussex surnames were lost over the centuries due to migration to other parts of Britain and beyond.
In 1228, Adam Taclurtes held Wyckham Manor, Steyning and it was claimed he was a descendent of William Tartcortais who in 1166 was a tenant by knight service to the Bishop

Focal Point
Most images have a focal point, an area which strongly attracts the eye of the viewer. This is very often a human face or figure as we are ‘wired’ to react to fellow humans.
I often include a single figure in my street photography, if there are no people in a street scene it is sometimes reminiscent of an empty stage awaiting an actor, a figure completes the scene.
The images on this page do not contain real people but the two mannequins and the portrait on the advertising serve the same purpose by drawing the viewer’s eye to these familiar shapes. These focal points are also strategically placed in the frame for maximum effect. It’s really a cliche but the placement of a focal point on the ‘thirds’ is a visual trick first used by artists. If you imagine drawing a noughts and crosses grid within the image frame you have four intersecting points. By placing the focal point 20
on or close to any one of these intersections it creates a balance and is aesthetically pleasing. Of course if every photograph contained this visual trick it would be very boring and repetitive. I sometimes enjoy tucking important elements into the extreme corner of some of my images as I feel this can make the image more challenging and can introduce drama.
In photography this trick is referred to as the ‘rule of thirds’ but it derives from the artists use of the ‘golden mean’ or the ‘golden ratio’ which is a mathematical ratio also known as the ‘golden number’. I humbly suggest that once learned, this can largely then be ignored as it can stifle your creativity. There should be no rules as photography is an art not a science !

Sussex Pathfinders Rambling Club
June 2024 will follow on and we always encourage members to provide their own favourite walks.
Do you enjoy country walks? Would you like to discover new places and meet like minded people to walk with you so you feel safe and able to enjoy the environment? Then SPRC could be the club for you.
We meet every weekend throughout the year and visit both East and West Sussex. There is usually a half day 5-6 mile walk on Saturdays and a full day walk of 9-11 miles on Sundays. We appreciate everyone walks at their own pace and no-one will ever be left behind. Generally members make their own arrangements for travelling to and from the meeting point. If this appeals to you, just turn up on a walk and introduce yourself to the walk leader. For an all-day walk, bring a packed lunch, though there will often be an opportunity to get a drink at lunch time. I suggest you visit our website – https://sussexpathfinders.org.uk to see our varied selection of walks up to the end of the year. Our new programme for January to
A selection of walks in West Sussex for October include Duncton (Chichester), Angmering Park (Arundel), Easebourne (Midhurst), Eartham Wood (Slindon), Clapham (West Worthing) and Pulborough. For more details contact Di Clarke at diann. clarke@outlook.com

Darren has recently married Sophie and they are looking forward to starting a family. He has a passion for DIY and motor racing. When not working or renovating their home, Darren and Sophie enjoy walks in the countryside and taking advantage of their National Trust memberships.
