HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE WILL PROVIDE YOUR FAMILY WITH SECURITY? Life insurance could ensure your family’s security if • Multiply your annual salary: If your family depend on your income, life insurance could provide a you pass away. It may be an important part of your replacement source of money if you pass away. financial plan and could provide peace of mind. If you take out a life insurance policy and pass away during the term, it would pay out a lump sum to your beneficiary. The beneficiary may use the money how they wish. They might use it to cover day-to-day expenses or improve their long-term finances, such as paying off a mortgage. It could provide your loved ones with more security when they’re grieving. Life insurance can cover a defined period or the whole of your life. You’ll need to pay premiums to maintain the cover. Just as important as assessing if life insurance could make sense as part of your financial plan is calculating what level of cover would be suitable. If you’re not sure what level of life insurance your family would need, these three methods to calculate cover could be a useful starting point. • Link it to your large financial commitments: Families often think about financial protection, including life insurance, when they take on a large financial commitment, such as a mortgage. As a result, you may choose to take out life insurance that would allow your family to pay off debt. It could take a weight off their mind and mean their regular income goes much further. Simply multiplying your salary by the number of years your family may need support could be useful. You may tie this to milestones, such as the age your children will reach adulthood. • Work out your family’s essential outgoings: Taking some time to better understand your family’s outgoings, and which ones they’ll need to maintain following a financial shock, could help understand the minimum payout they would need to avoid financial challenges. A tailored financial plan could help you understand your life insurance needs While the above three methods can provide a useful guideline for calculating how much cover you’d like your life insurance to provide, making it part of your wider financial plan can help ensure it would cover your family’s needs. By incorporating life insurance into your financial plan, you can choose cover that’s not only appropriate for you but complements other financial decisions.

Steyning Village Carols

Tuesday 19th December 20.00 Star Inn, High Street

Carols have been sung in the fields and streets of this country since at least the fifteenth century, and although nowadays carols are more associated with church and chapel, there is a much older tradition of seasonal singing by ordinary people in ordinary surroundings, including the pub!

NEW STEYNING OFFICE NOW OPEN

Traditional Seasonal Singing from the folk tradition has taken place in Steyning just before Christmas every year for the past ten years or more, and we are again delighted to be the guests of the Star Inn in the High Street for 2023. Everyone is welcome at the Star at 8pm on Tuesday 19th December for an evening of atmospheric, communal singing of songs and choruses, including some well-known traditional favourites to get your Christmas off to a great start!

Christmas Treats in Steyning Steyning & District is, as always keen to add oomph to the run up to Christmas. The High Street lights are already in position and ready to be switched on at the appropriate moment and, by the time you read this, the Christmas in Steyning extravaganza will have taken place on Sunday 3rd December – hope you all enjoyed it!

The Christmas

Challenge Trail

More delights to look forward to is the Christmas Challenge – a children’s High Street Safari featuring AR characters, which will begin on 29th November and run through until 7th January. Ten shop window within Steyning High Street will display vinyl images of different “doors” which, when clicked on via a smartphone, will reveal the resident. The Challenge Involves the opportunity to take selfies with whoever appears, take part in puzzles and riddles and when all doors have been “opened” receive an e-book as a prize for completing the task. Another fun outing – and a first for this year – is a visit to the North Pole post box, situated in Cobblestone Walk. The box will be open for business from 29th November and last post will be 23rd December. Encourage your little ones to trot along and post their special letter to Santa and, on set days, an Elf will appear to empty the box and make sure all gets safely delivered to Father Christmas. Be good to come along too, to see this very special collection, and give the Elf a cheer. 10

To find out more go to www.visitsteyning. co.uk where you will find details of the Safari Trail, Elf Collection Days and a video showing all the reasons why Steyning is just the place to buy ALL your Christmas goodies – presents, food (including that turkey !), drink, clothing and, of course, stopping off from all that shopping for a tasty morsel and maybe even a glass of wine or beer ! Happy days – even if you are rushed off your feet preparing for this very special family time; it will be worth it..

Ingredients

(serves 2 hungry people as a main course, or 4 with a baked potato and a green salad to go alongside)

Nigella’s Turkey Hash Introduction

She’s the undisputable queen of Christmas, but Nigella Lawson doesn’t just have you covered for the big day, she also knows exactly how to use up those Christmas lunch leftovers. Though written as an actual recipe, the doyenne of dining makes it clear that the quantities are meant to be a guide only. They are more of the “a handful of this, a handful of that” school of cookery, allowing you to add your own specific brand of festive flair.

Method 1. Toss the flaked almonds in a hot, dry pan over a medium to high heat until toasted. Remove to a plate for a while. 2. Add the butter and oil to the pan, then throw in the chopped onions and peppers and cook, stirring, over a medium to low heat for about 10 minutes. 3. Stir in the garlic, then add the shredded turkey and cook until piping hot. Return the reserved

12

toasted flaked almonds to the pan, add the olives and mix in. 4. Whisk together the soured cream, turkey stock and egg, then pour into the pan, give a quick stir to combine and shake in the Tabasco sauce. 5. Finally, add the grated Parmesan and stir until it begins to melt into the hash. On serving, sprinkle with chopped parsley, if wished.

• 50g flaked almonds • 15g butter • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 2 red peppers, deseeded and chopped • 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced • 250g shredded cold turkey • 75g pitted black olives • 2 tbsp soured cream • 2 tbsp leftover turkey stock • 1 egg • A few dashes of Tabasco sauce, or to taste • 75g grated Parmesan • 1–2 tbsp chopped flatleaf parsley to garnish (optional)

Top Tip • Channel your inner Nigella and feel free to make whatever swaps necessary to suit your tastes and provisions at hand. No turkey? No problem, shredded gammon would work just as well.

Arthur Calder-Marshall

Arthur Calder-Marshall, the novelist, critic and essayist, was born in Wallington, Surrey in 1908. His grandfather had moved to Steyning, West Sussex in the early 1900s, having retired as a chartered accountant. He liked the town for its quietness and lived in red brick house looking over the Adur’s marshes towards Bramber castle. He was the brigadier of the local Church Lads’ Brigade and superintendent of the Sunday school. He even wrote a poem about the place, ‘A Reverie At Steyning’.

‘Dead Centre’ (1935).

By the time Arthur-Calder-Marshall moved to Steyning though, aged fifteen and along with his parents and brother, his grandfather has passed away. Among young Arthur’s early recollections of the town are the cattle and sheep that passed through the streets on market days. At than time Steyning was known for its thriving market. While living in the town young Arthur became friends with Victor Neuberg who ran the Vine Press there, which he later wrote about in his memoir ‘The Magic Of My Youth’. Arthur’s father was a consulting engineer and merchant who travelled all over the world, including Russia and Egypt. He was often away from the family for years at a time and the family had lived in eleven different homes before he purchased his father’s house in Steyning. Arthur Calder-Marshall still went to school in London, as the family also had a flat in London’s Bedford Square. He then attended Oxford University in the 1920s, part of the generation that included Evelyn Waugh, Harold Acton and Peter Quennell. The poet Walter de la Mare especially impressed him when he came and spoke to the undergraduates. Arthur CalderMarshall had many literary friends from his time at Oxford and in the drawing rooms of the Bloomsbury set, including Stephen Spender, John Betjeman and Isaiah Berlin. Arthur Calder-Marshall knew he wanted to be a writer and edited the university’s influential magazine ‘The Outlook’. He also had short stories published in the ‘Manchester Guardian.’ Upon graduating, he went to the editors of a number of newspapers looking for a job, but by then the depression was beginning and no one seemed to be hiring new journalists. His father offered to continue his allowance for three months so he could write a novel, but his first book did not find a publisher and he found himself teaching English at Denstone College in Staffordshire. Although it was not a happy time for Arthur, it inspired his novel

14

Arthur Calder-Marshall’s novels ‘Two Of A Kind’ and ‘About Levy’ were published in 1933 and he went on to have nine novels published as well as writing short stories, a play, children’s fiction including ‘The Fair To Middling’ with illustrations by Raymond Briggs, and travel memoirs. ‘About Levy’ was praised by the New York Times and publisher Jonathan Cape offered a six novel deal. Many of his books are still in print today including ‘Glory Dead’ an account of a young English communist visiting Trinidad in 1938 and ‘The Scarlet Boy’ from 1961, a gothic novel that deals with the paranormal.

In 1937 he began writing film scripts for MGM, though none were actually filmed. Orson Welles adapted one of his novels ‘The Way To Santiago,’ a spy thriller, but a dispute between Welles and the studio RKO meant it wasn’t made. Arthur meanwhile became a member of the London based Left-Wing Writers and Readers Group. His play ‘Season Of Good Will’ was produced in 1965,adapted from a novel by Dorothy Malm. The National Portrait Gallery has a number of black and white photographs of Arthur Calder-Marshall in its collection.

Arthur Calder-Marshall moved to Twickenham in later life. His wife was documentary screenplay writer Ara and their daughter Anna Calder-Marshall has established herself as a leading actor, appearing in many film, theatre and TV roles. Her son, Arthur Calder-Marshall’s grandson, is the actor Tom Burke. His mother Anna appeared in the fifth season of JK Rowlings’ ‘Strike’ detective drama, acting opposite Tom Burke who plays the title role. Contre - Jour Lighting

Contre - Jour is French for ‘against daylight’ but in the context of photography it is understood to be photographing toward any light source. This technique produces shadows in the foreground, enhances lines and shapes and can create silhouettes. This can work particularly well in black and white as the shadows and silhouettes can be easily enhanced with photoshop or smartphone filters to give good solid blacks which add contrast and drama to images. Although not illustrated here, this technique can distort or burn out parts of the image if the source of light itself is included in the picture, this can be attractive but if that area is too large and bright it can distract from the rest of the picture

Two of my images here were taken in Paris from an elevated walkway (Promenade des Plantes) which means that my camera is pointing down, avoiding bright skies but capturing the effect that those bright skies have on the scene. The third picture was taken in Brighton. The camera is only slightly tipped forward but emphasises how the shadows are reaching towards the viewer, drawing the eye into the scene. You can see more of my images here: www. instagram.com/shoreham_steveContre Jour Lighting

so you may need to balance that a little. I see many images of a low sun bleaching out a large area of the photograph but if you position yourself so the camera just catches the light creeping out from behind a tall building or a tree trunk, this just restricts the size and brightness of the light source in order to ’tame’ it a little so it doesn’t dominate the image as it is best not to ‘over use’ the effect but to use it to enhance the overall scene. 20

Deciding to become a funeral director after witnessing the importance of the role whilst experiencing his own bereavement, Darren has become Passionate about the village and community of Storrington that he serves. “I feel privileged to be part of such a historic village, with so many wonderful families. It is an honour to be able to help them through such challenging times, by creating personal funerals and allowing them to celebrate their loved one’s life, however they feel best.” Darren and his wife Sophie have recently expanded their family with the arrival of their daughter Olivia. As a family, they love the outdoors. Exploring the South Downs countryside and taking advantage of their National Trust and English Heritage memberships in their spare time.
