WHY IT PAYS TO USE YOUR 2022/23 ISA ALLOWANCE RIGHT NOW The 2022/23 tax year has only just started, but you should already start thinking about how you’ll use your allowances over the next 12 months. It can help maximise your assets. In the 2022/23 tax year you can deposit up to £20,000 into ISAs. If you don’t use this allowance before the end of the tax year, you lose it. You can save or invest tax-efficiently through an ISA, so making full use of your allowance can help your money go further. If you left using your 2021/22 ISA allowance until the deadline was near, don’t let your ISA slip your mind now. Drip-feeding your deposits can make your ISA goal part of your budget: If you want to maximise your ISA allowance or have a goal for how much you want to put in, making regular deposits a part of your budget can help. Depositing £1,666 into your ISA each month can be more manageable than adding a lump sum at the end of the tax year. If you don’t have a lump sum to add to your ISA, breaking down your end goal can make sense. In addition to making deposits more manageable, drip-feeding your money can be useful if you’ll be investing through an ISA. Investment markets will rise and fall throughout the year. So, by spreading out deposits, you’ll be buying at different points throughout the market cycle. It’s an approach that can remove the temptation to try and time the markets. Depositing a lump sum now means you have longer to earn interest or returns If you already have a lump sum available to deposit, doing so now means you could have an extra 12

months of interest or returns than you would if you waited until April 2023. If you’ll be saving through a Cash ISA, the extra interest added to your account over the year can really add up. Adding a lump sum if you’ll be using a Stocks and Shares ISA to invest means you can potentially benefit from an additional 12 months of investment returns. The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts Brighton West Opens New Afternoon Academy watch the classes.

PQA Brighton West is opening a new afternoon academy this May, following the success of the morning academy. Children and young people aged 6-18 years are invited to come along on 21st May, from 1:30pm for free, full 3-hour session, giving the opportunity to experience the new afternoon academy. PQA Brighton West’s afternoon academy is an addition to its current successful Saturday morning academy. Both take place at Southwick Community Centre.

Led by experienced teachers, potential students get to try Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre, and PQA’s unique Film & Television module, in groups according to their age.

The PQA team will be on hand to answer any questions, and one lucky attendee will also win a term’s free membership.

PQA was started by actress Pauline Quirke and her producer husband Steve Sheen in 2007 with an academy in their local town, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. This very successful venture led to further openings over the years, now totalling just over 195 academies nationwide.

Family Vintage Festival in Shoreham-by-Sea celebrating the Queens 70th Jubilee The Shoreham-by-Sea Vintage Festival will take place at the Adur Recreational ground from 2nd to 5th June 2022, during the Queens Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend. It promises to be a great event for all the family. There is everything vintage to enjoy, from style to antiques, superb live music, dance, a vintage funfair and car display. A huge festival bar offering great food delights from all over the world. Photography Exhibitions I have just purchased my ticket for a photographic event in May that, for me, not to be missed. The Photo London Exhibition was established in 2004 but only ran for 3 years. It was relaunched in 2015 and has since been held at Somerset House. It is a showcase for photographic sales galleries to show and sell photographers’ work with curated exhibitions

Classic photographs from the past are displayed for sale, some for many thousands of pounds but plenty

I have been to this annual event a few times and it is a really great day out. Somerset House is a warren of rooms on several levels of the main building plus a temporary pavilion constructed in the courtyard exhibiting photographs inside and displaying large photographs outside. This provides visitors with photo opportunities of their own. I have published images here that I hope give a flavour of the event. The basement

Last year each individual exhibition had a QR code on the wall which visitors could scan ith their smart phone to be taken to a website which gave a greater insight into the work of that photographer or of the gallery that represented them. Margaret Barber Margaret Barber was born in Rastrick, Brighouse, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, on the 7th of May 1869. She was the youngest of three daughters and like all of them was educated at home by her mother, Maria Louisa Barber. When Margaret’s father Fairless Barber, a solicitor and archaeologist, died in 1881, Margaret was sent away to live with relatives in Torquay. She attended the local school where was discovered that Margaret suffered from a debilitating spinal condition. She then moved to Suffolk to live with her mother. In 1884 Margaret moved to London to train and qualify as a nurse. She worked in a children’s hospital and became a district nurse for charity in the East End, still regularly journeying to Torquay to look after a relative.

While on holiday in 1889 and staying her with friend Elinor Dowson at Mockbridge House, Shermanbury, two miles north of Henfield, West Sussex, Margaret’s health deteriorated. Elinor shared Margaret’s interest in art and sculpture. Margaret’s failing eyesight and a paralysis down one side that meant she was losing the use of her right hand, meant she could no longer sculpt. Bedridden, she lay with a notebook on her chest and learned to write with her left hand. From her bed she was able to observe the Mock Bridge, which crossed the River Adur by the main road beside the old mill and the Bull Inn. Combining her observations of local life with memories of being a district nurse in the East End slums, she become an author.

of Margaret, but the age of thirty-three Margaret died on the 24th of August that same year, in Henfield. She was buried in nearby St. James’ churchyard, Ashurst. Soon after her death the first ‘Michael Fairless’ book received public acclaim. It was the religious romance ‘The Gathering of Brother Hilarius’ and was published that same year. Her second book ‘The Roadmender’ was published in 1902 and a third book ‘The Grey Brethren’, in 1905. This was a book of short fairy tales among them were ‘A German Christmas Eve’, ‘The Manifestation’, ‘The Dreadful Griffin’, ‘The Discontented Daffodils’, and ‘The Fairy Fluffikins.’

It was ‘The Roadmender’ though that became a global literary classic. It was reprinted thirty-one times in ten years. It was a collected series of articles on theology and a commentary of current affairs interspersed with vivid descriptions of the Sussex countryside. his own travels and reflections on the world around him. The road itself is a significant aspect of the book, representing the journey we all make through life.

It was originally intended for magazine publication and it confounded many a critic for not having a traditional run-through storyline and narrative. Instead it was considered faultless in its poetic style. Many a traveller and artist clamoured to know where the picturesque locations were, and many made enquiries to the publisher as to the true identity of the author. Such was the speculation that built up around book that the works of ‘Michael Fairless’ became the subject of published literature study. Margaret’s inspiring life and courage in overcoming disability were finally revealed in 1912. ‘The Roadmender’ has been continually reprinted with various editions available including illustrated versions.

Rotary support for Ukrainian Humanitarian appeal The military invasion into Ukraine in February, has caused over nine hundred civilian deaths and pushed millions of Ukrainians to flee from their homes to neighbouring countries. To meet the increasing needs of Ukrainian families, Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club Members were out in force in Storrington on 5th March at their bookstall in Place Villerest and at Old Mill Square Storrington on 12th March collecting £1,456 and £1,545 respectively.

These amounts will be increased with gift aid payments and a number of separate donations.

In addition, the Rotary Club itself has donated £1,000. Collections are continuing and the final total is expected to exceed £5,000.

Rotary enables Lodge Hill to offer night sky activities

The ambition of the Lodge Hill outdoor Activity Centre for schools and young people to introduce night sky star gazing to the Centre’s activities programme owes much to its hilltop location near Pulborough in the South Downs National Park, designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the impact his iconic Ground Force series had on the nation. I get asked a lot about Ground Force, the TV programme I fronted for ﬁve years from 1997, and the impact it made on gardening, as a whole. To be honest, I don’t like to talk up my achievements too much, but I will admit this was one of the real successes I will always look back on with fondness. That’s not so much for any personal reasons, and I certainly don’t think my horticultural knowledge was called on in the same way it has been with other gardening shows I’ve done over the years. Instead, the pride I have for Ground Force stems from a place where we managed to start something of an outdoors revolution.

Not only were we at the forefront of a new brand of reality TV (that wasn’t a talent show or a singing contest). It was in people’s homes, in their lives, and focused on the idea that people could come together from all over to make a difference. All the people involved in Ground Force came from different backgrounds and offered very different ideas in the process of transforming a chosen family’s back garden, but it worked. My role was probably one of the easiest – almost just an anchor man pulling the whole thing together, however clumsily! The show’s success provoked a whole raft of other home reality programmes where people’s dreams came true… usually. And I say that on the basis of some of the awkward transformations Changing Rooms embarked on! Yet for the most part, this brand of telly was incredibly successful – think DIY SOS, Property Ladder, Amazing Spaces, Grand Designs, Location Location Location and others. At the heart of it is exploring human nature and putting

ordinary people in extraordinary situations, and seeing how they react. Everyone who agrees to take part is looking for something, and the lucky ones are the ones who ﬁnd it and know when they have found it. After all, our gardens will never be absolutely perfect places – nature sees to that – but Ground Force certainly got them close to that for a time. As the TV crews departed, I would always suggest to the homeowners they should just sit in or look out over their garden without feeling conditioned to keep it in a certain way. Life isn’t like that – it evolves, as do our outside spaces, and we should let it. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”… or tidying the garden!

Steyning Festival 2022 27TH May - 5th June We are ready and raring to go with our usual packed programme of events, with something for everyone. The Big Top will take centre stage on Fletchers Croft with the bar and cafe open throughout the ten days of fun and frolics.

Steyning will once again be alive with music, walks and talks, art and books, theatre and comedy and lots of opportunities to get together to laugh, learn and mingle. We will have the usual favourites, lots of activities for all the family, Green Day, mind, body, soul and planet with a huge inflatable whale taking centre stage; Art in the Park, paint a portrait, contribute to our mural, knit and natter; June Jubilations, with all the fun of the fair, puppet show, coconut shy and classic car display. Celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by joining one of two parties – the Big Lunch on the High Street or the Big Picnic on the Green.

Back by popular demand - Craig Charles who will have the Big Top jumping to a mix of big beats, banging brass and boogaloo. Dance the night away to Flash, the ultimate Queen tribute band, who will kick start the long weekend. Lots of other music throughout the Festival, folk, jazz, rock.

Walks, talks and authors a plenty. There will of course be the usual favourites; Theatre, Walks and Tours including Wiston Wines, Graveyard Gossip; Talks and Literature events from among others, Andy Coulson, Danny Dorling, Jonathan Aitkin, Justin Webb and John Simpson, plus a Crime Writers evening to include Paula Hawkins (Girl on a Train). All in all a cornucopia of opinions, attitudes and ideas.
