Keep fit and healthy! What a rollercoaster of a year! There have been some fairly earth-shattering lows, a few highs, little things suddenly became big things, we saw the value and importance of family, friends and our communities rise above So, after a few summer months of some type of normality, feeling like life was gradually getting back to a kind of normal, it all changed. Nobody wanted a second lockdown, but perhaps it was inevitable. We have all learnt this virus is unpredictable and exceptionally damaging and a nationwide coming together was needed to slow it in its tracks. We know the run up to Christmas will be different for all of us this year, so it’s not surprising that we need to send the winter blues packing. To do this we are going to need to be proactive about keeping our immune system in good working order, and ensure we feel energised both inside and out. Here are some tips to help you over the coming months: Keep up your vitamin C intake. It contributes to the normal function of your immune system. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables such as Citrus Fruits, Kiwi, Red & Green Peppers and Broccoli. Avoid dairy products especially, if you are prone to clogged sinuses and catarrh. You will find lots of dairy free alternatives available. Magnesium is essential for good health. Eat lots of magnesium rich foods such as Spinach, Okra, Pumpkin Seeds and Almonds. It not only contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system but can help with sleep too. Be active with an exercise routine. The benefits are multiple for mood, energy and all-round health. Getting outside in nature is a natural energy and mood booster, natural light boosts vitamin D intake, boosting your wellbeing.
Remember your water levels. H2O is so important. 6-8 glasses a day helps maintain a healthy digestion, circulation, and keeps the skin healthy.
Consider supplements. As well as eating a varied, well balanced diet look at multi vitamins, probiotics and omega. Look after your skin. Winter can play havoc on our skin, especially if we continue wearing face coverings. Make sure you review your skin care routine. Skin changes with the seasons, as well as when we age!
Take time out to manage your stress levels. Make time for yourself perhaps some meditation, a new hobby, pamper yourself or just laugh it off! Keep fit and healthy.

WHY FINANCIAL LESSONS ARE IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN & TEENS Financial education is taught in schools, but it’s not going far enough Financial education in childhood is crucial. Attitudes and habits formed in our tentative years can have an impact in adulthood and passing on your financial knowledge and the lessons you’ve learnt to children and grandchildren can lead to them being more financially savvy and secure in the future. In fact, financial education has been part of the school curriculum since 2014 and while that introduction is positive, it’s not going far enough. The Young Persons’ Money Index found that parents are the main source of financial understanding. Less than one in ten said they received most of their financial understanding from school.
Give them pocket money: When learning about money and its value, nothing beats practical lessons. Even a small amount of pocket money each week can get children used to budgeting and saving. Teach the difference between need and want: One of the most important financial lessons for children is to learn the difference between what they need and want. This is a lesson that can help them get a handle on budgeting and planning right from the start. Set up a savings account: Saving is an important financial lesson to learn. Opening a savings account on their behalf can start a lifelong habit. Seeing how their money grows and learning how interest works can be enough motivation for them to add more.
A lack of understanding could be playing a role in how many young people worry about money. Some 69% of teens said they worry about finances, rising to Lead by example: Finally, children learn by observation. Practising what you preach is important 82% among 17-18-year olds. when it comes to passing on financial lessons. The good news is that there’s a willingness to learn. Eight in ten said they wanted to learn more about money and finance. The subjects they most want to learn about are: Mortgages; Pensions; Loans and credit cards; Tax and budgeting; Debt management. 5 tips for boosting financial knowledge in your children and grandchildren Make money part of conversations: Money can be something of a taboo subject. We rarely discuss how we invest money or what’s in our savings account. However, making it part of everyday conversation in your home can help children and teenagers grasp the financial decisions adults make.
Financial education can provide a solid foundation for financial security into adulthood. As with many milestones requiring cash, from buying a house to learning to drive, saving for a child’s future can make their transition to independence smoother. There are many products to choose from when saving or investing for a child. Please get in touch to arrange a meeting to talk over your plans and what your options are. Gluck Hannah Gluckstein was born in London on the 13th of August 1895. Her father was Joseph Gluckstein and her mother was the opera singer, Francesca Halle. Gluck was educated at Dame School in Swiss Cottage and left in 1910, moving to St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith. In 1913 Gluck, as she liked to be known, won a Royal Drawing Society silver star. She went on to study at St. John’s Wood School of Art until 1916 when she ran away with her partner E.M. Craig to the artist commune in Lamorna, Cornwall. In 1918, at the age of 23, Gluck and Craig returned to London, living in Finchley Road and setting up an art studio together in Earls Court. Gluck was invited to be vice-president of an art society, but she resigned when referred to as Miss Gluck on its letterhead. Gluck hated the use of ‘divisive’ prefixes; pronouns and forenames believing there shouldn’t be a distinction of ability by gender. Gluck had a masculine appearance, smoked a pipe and was rebellious by not identifying with any established artistic style. Her paintings were shown in solo exhibitions, where the floral pictures were bought by the interior decorator Syrie Maugham and the commissioned portraits ended up in private collection. In 1923 Gluck herself was the subject of the Romaine Brooks painting ‘Peter, a Young English Girl’. In 1924, Gluck exhibited at the Dorien Leigh Galleries in South Kensington, London and in 1925 she painted a set of theatre scenes that were displayed in her Stage and Country exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1926. She also invented a new display frame that was patented in 1932. The Gluck Frame was a three-tier mounting decorated to match the wall of the room where the painting was to be exhibited. In the same year she painted the portrait of Miss Margaret Watts.
In May 1936 Gluck spent a weekend with the Obermer family at Mill House in Plumpton, East Sussex. Attending a Fritz Busch production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni she was inspired to paint her most famous work the Medallion. It was a self-portrait that also featured a portrait of Nesta Obermer. In 1937 Gluck exhibited her paintings, in which the Medallion was the masterpiece of the collection, in her third and final show at the Fine Art Society. The royal family attended the exhibition. In September 1939 with the outbreak of the Second World War, Gluck closed her home Bolton House in West Hampstead, where in 1931 the architect Edward Maufe had designed and built a studio extension for her. cont/d page 22 9

Planting crocuses in support of Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign Rotary has been getting its green fingers working to turn part of Storrington Memorial Pond into purple blooming spectacles each spring Members of Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club have planted 4,000 purple crocus corms which will be a colourful reminder each spring of the fight for a polio free world. Purple has become a symbolic colour in the global Rotary campaign to eradicate polio, inspired by the colour of the dye painted on the little finger of a child to signify they have received a potentially life-saving polio vaccine. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years and the goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since the first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Recently the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Africa region has officially been certified wild polio-free.Rotary members worldwide have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease and its advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort. Rotary Club President Pippa Davies commented, “We’re proud to be planting these purple symbols of the Polio campaign. Only together can we end polio and we can

Ancient Woodland Appeal
Our ancient woodlands are irreplaceable. Many of them date back to the end of the last Ice Age; but today they cover less than 2% of the UK.
Our ancient woodlands are irreplaceable. Many of them date back to the end of the last Ice Age; but today they cover less than 2% of the UK. We urgently need to raise £50,000 to secure the future of over 24 hectares of ancient woodland to the north and west of our woodland reserve at Ebernoe Common, near Petworth in West Sussex. Next year is the 60th anniversary of Sussex Wildlife Trust, and the purchase of this woodland would be a wonderful way to celebrate. It would also mean that Sussex Wildlife Trust will have direct control over the management of a large area of ancient
18
woodland, ancient wood-pasture and rewilded arable land, creating a woodland ‘super-reserve’. The new woodland will need careful management to enhance its biodiversity in the coming years, and we will be monitoring it with regular ecological surveys. Securing funding for the ongoing management costs is also a crucial part of making this purchase possible.
Horsham Museum has introduced their new heritage trails, Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund which feature several great walking routes and offer people the chance to explore the District’s local history. The project, initiated by the Horsham District Community Partnerships Forum back in 2018, was intended as a way of using heritage to promote tourism, to help the local economy. Now thanks to Covid its importance has been transformed as people search out local walks that connect them to their place and so contribute to a sense of well-being, as the Heritage Lottery Fund were keen to promote. Though the trails were the final outcome, what was as important was the training of volunteers in writing and producing trails. So a guide for groups to create their own has also been written, pointing out, as the trails do, interesting features and the path to follow to create an engaging well thought out route to the destination. Drawing inspiration from the Millennium Heritage trail, some 32 plaques scattered across the district the Heritage lottery funded project enabled community groups to explore further their local heritage and explain to others why they should seek it out. It captures people’s passions for their area, stories that grabbed their imagination, be it a gate post from a long lost garden on the outskirts of Horsham to a Burmese door in Storrington. Most of the trails are designed for walking, though two that explore the various churches are more suitable for the bike or car. But what all the trails do is reveal either interesting sites or picturesque views, from country lanes to meandering rivers, to the farmland of the downs, or the urban setting with its mixture of architecture.
So if you want to discover Storrington, Sullington, Steyning, Southwater, or Bramber, Beeding, or Henfield, Horsham, The Adur, Arun, or Rusper, Rudgwick and then down the road to Billingshurst, or Coolham, Cowfold, or Knepp, then pick up the free trails. If you want to discover famous musicians, money men, poets, soldiers and statesmen, quirky houses to quintessentially English views then these are the trails to find. If you want to create your own trail, follow the route in the manual. Horsham District Heritage trails was a project involving Local heritage groups across the district, the Horsham District Community Partnerships Forum, Horsham Museum (Horsham District council) Treetop Design and print and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, without whose financial support and all of those who buy the lottery ticket this project would not have been possible. The free printed trails are full of images will be available at local libraries post lockdown, whilst those on line are far simpler in look, so they are easy to download and can be found on Horsham Museum’s website. Have a sphere of interest that extends beyond County, District, Parish and Neighbourhood councils’ functions and cater for diverse interests in the community of all ages

David’s story Last year, David’s mum and dad died within a couple of months of each other, and both received expert, loving care at St Barnabas House. David has shared his experience. My dad, Bill, had been living with advanced prostate cancer. But as his condition advanced, it was clear he was approaching the end of his life. Dad agreed to visit the hospice to see what they could do to relieve his symptoms and ease his pain. The medical care and knowledge he received there was extraordinary, and everyone made a huge fuss of dad. It was coming up to his 90th birthday and the nurses piled into his room and we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ together. Dad had such a big smile on his face, and next day he came home to us. Dad lived for 10 more weeks and the Hospice at Home team came out to him every day. In those precious weeks we got to sit, talk and share favourite family stories. It was a dignified, peaceful, even beautiful death.
Looking back, the overwhelming memory I have is of being surrounded by kindness. Will you join me in making a gift to St Barnabas House this Christmas? Visit www. stbh.org.uk/christmasappeal
A few days later, my mum, Joan, had a fall at home. Her GP insisted she have some tests. At dad’s funeral, mum and I kept the news of the tests quiet. But then the results came back. Mum had advanced liver and lung cancer, and she only had weeks to live. It was a huge shock for all of us and, once again, St Barnabas came to the rescue. The hospice team bent over backwards to find mum a bed and we found ourselves back in those familiar, bright surroundings once more. Mum lived for only five weeks following her diagnosis, and she was cared for by the same wonderful nurses who’d come to know dad so well.

the Fine Art Society. The royal family attended the exhibition. In September 1939 with the outbreak of the Second World War, Gluck closed her home Bolton House in West Hampstead, where in 1931 the architect Edward Maufe had designed and built a studio extension for her. Gluck moved to a cottage in Plumpton and the Auxiliary Fire Service requisitioned Bolton House during the war. In 1943 Gluck met the correspondent Edith Shackleton Heald whose articles were published by the London Evening Standard, the Daily Sketch and Express newspapers. After holidaying in Brighton, Gluck moved into the Shackleton Heald sisters’ home of Chantry House in Steyning, West Sussex in 1944. Gluck’s art was then exhibited at Steyning Grammar School In the 1950’s, Gluck was frustrated by the limitations of the paint available to artists. The paints were too grainy and inconsistent in colour when applied, either being too sticky or streaking. Gluck thought the paintings look dull when finished and campaigned for oil paints to improve but this was time consuming. In the 1960’s she resumed painting with paint supplied free by a manufacturer that was able to meet her requirements. In 1973 at the age of 78, Gluck painted ‘Rage, Rage against the Dying of the Light.’ The picture was of a decomposing fish head she had discovered when strolling along Worthing beach. The image became the centrepiece of a Gluck exhibition of paintings by the Fine Art Society and it was her first show in thirty years. In 1977 Gluck donated to the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery a collection of artefacts, pictures and clothing obtained while living and painting in Tunisia in 1934. She died in 1978, in Steyning, at the age of 82. The Fine Art Society staged a Gluck exhibition in February 2017 to great acclaim.
