The average standard variable rate for June 2022 reached 4.91% To tackle rising inflation, the Bank of England (BoE) has increased its base interest rate several times this year. Changes to the base rate affect the cost of borrowing, including mortgages. If your mortgage isn’t fixed-rate, you’ve likely already noticed that your repayments have started to increase. As SVRs are usually higher than other types of mortgage product, homeowners that haven’t searched for a new mortgage deal could find they’re paying much more in interest than they need to.
At a time when interest rates are slowly rising, choosing a fixed-rate mortgage can make sense for some people.
The below table highlights
If a previous mortgage deal has ended and you’ve not taken out a new one, you could be paying a much higher rate of interest.
how the interest rate affects finances for a £250,000 repayment mortgage with a term of 25 years.
According to Moneyfacts, the average SVR in June 2022 reached 4.91%. This is the highest recorded since February 2009. Rates can vary significantly between lenders, so you should check how much interest you’re paying and how it affects your outgoings.
So, if you’re paying your lender’s SVR, finding a new mortgage deal could save you money now and in the long term. As interest rates climb, should you choose a fixedrate mortgage? If you’re on your lender’s SVR, the interest rate you pay is variable. This means it can rise and fall each month.
Source: Money Saving Expert
As a mortgage is secured against your home or property, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Equity released from your home will be secured against it. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments. Interest rate Monthly repayment

While the interest rate on a fixed-rate mortgage is likely to be initially higher than the alternatives, it will remain the same for a defined period, such as two years. This can make managing your budget easier..
Even a small difference in the interest rate can save you money each month, and this adds up over the full term of your mortgage.
When you take out a mortgage, the deal is for a fixed period, often two, three or five years. After this period, you’ll normally be moved on to your lender’s SVR. While this can provide more flexibility – you may wish to make overpayments, for example – the interest rate you’re paying is unlikely to be competitive.

The old Norfolk Bridge, with its two elegant arches topped by a horse statue on one end and a lion on the other is a picturesque scene sadly lost to modern infrastructure. Similarly many of the thatched cottages of Old Shoreham that Harrison charmingly painted have since been demolished. The quiet lanes with their overhanging trees and plodding cattle are now suburban streets. A collection of his oil paintings captures the lost beauty of the Swiss Pleasure Gardens of 1911, an attraction that once brought day-trippers to Shoreham in their droves. The Swiss Gardens paintings are held by the Marlipins Museum and may have been among the many works found in a cupboard by Harrison’s daughter Nina after his death in 1930. Brook Harrison also made some items of furniture, re-using wood that had once been part of the old Buckingham House. Brooking Alfred Wrankmore Harrison was born on the 17th of May 1860. He was the only child of Brooking Baylay Harrison and his wife Victoria, whose mother Jane Butler came from Shoreham-By-Sea. Brooking senior was a draughtsman who was killed by being stuck by lighting. Brook Harrison studied at the Brighton Municipal School Of Art. Having been originally based at the Royal Pavilion it moved to Grand Parade in 1876. He then attended Julian’s Academy in Paris. He married Lucy Anne Hayes from Somerset on the 27th of June 1888, in Hove. They had four children and moved from 55 Blatchington Road, Hove to 67 Victoria Road, TheShoreham.eldest daughter was Lucie Emmeline (18891978) who emigrated to America in 1909 as a lady’s companion. In 1911 she married Cecil Abram Hoagland. The Harrisons’ eldest son was also called Brooking (1896-1918). He and their youngest son, Garland (1900-1918) were both members of the St Mary’s church choir and Shoreham scouts. Both were tragically killed in the First World War. The youngest daughter was Nina (1891-1963) who stayed living with her parents. Brook Harrison worked as a teacher, teaching still life at his old school in Brighton and was a founding member of the Brighton Art Club. He was also a founder of the Marlipins museum. The Marlipins hosted an exhibition of his works after his death in 1930 and again in 1998. Charles Morris of the Society Of Sussex Painters who was a friend of Brook Harrison, said of him, “He just loved painting.”
Brook Harrison
A wiry man with a wispy, continental style beard inspired from his days as an art student in Paris, Brook Harrison was a familiar sight in Shorehamby-Sea in the early years of the 20th Century. With his sketchpad or canvas, easel and paints, he captured the landscapes and buildings of the area. In the garden studio of his home, Harrison completed at least 200 pastoral-style paintings using watercolour or oils. He depicted the Red Lion public house in vivid colour circa 1900. Other works recorded the tall sailing ships docked in the Aldrington Basin and the Salt Daisy Lake. The Royal Pavilion and Museum of Brighton and Hove now have this stunning watercolour scene in their collection. Brook Harrison also painted a watercolour of the famous Mystery Towers as they were being constructed in the harbour during World War I and this artwork is held by the Imperial War Museum in London.

Jenny Davys, registered osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, looks at an injury that’s hit the headlines… The Lionesses have come home!!! I’m writing on the day the England women’s football team won the UEFA Cupl! And the winning goal was scored by Chloe Kelly who, just three months ago, had an operation to repair her ACL. But what IS the ACLACL?stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament – an important connective tissue within your knee, which stops the shin (tibia) from slipping forward of your thigh (femur). There is also a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), which stops the tibia sliding backwards. “Cruciate” comes from the Latin for a cross, as these two ligaments cross over each other inside the knee. Both ACL and PCL are important for stabilisation of the knee, but the ACL is more frequently injured, particularly in women. The ACL is smaller, thinner and more vulnerable than the PCL. The PCL is mainly damaged by over-bending (hyperflexion) of the knee, often caused by impact to the lower leg/shin. On the other hand, several movements in sport or daily activity may damage the ACL:
• Rotating your knee with foot on the ground –eg landing from a jump and twisting knee the opposite way • quickly changing direction when running or walking sudden deceleration or stopping when running • over-extending (straight ening >180 degrees) your knee Think how often these movements occur in, say, tennis, skiing, netball… and of course football! Dancers too may be ACLsusceptible.injuries range from a sprain, to a tear, to full rupture . Pain may be felt within the knee on movement, there may be a popping sound and the knee may feel unstable (as if it might collapse). Minor sprains usually heal with rest, pain relief, exercises and supportive taping. Worstcase scenario, an ACL rupture is marked by rapid and severe swelling of the knee and needs reconstructive surgery (as per our Chloe!). Restoration of full stability may take months, including a rehab programme and knee brace. Ideally, please get any pain in your knee checked out by a professional. Our caring team at SOC will conduct a full assessment and help you back to scoring those goals or leaping around the www.shorehamosteo.co.ukstage!

A MATINEE FILM: THE DUKE 1961 London. An outspoken Newcastle taxi driver, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broad bent on top form), disgusted by the money spent on Goya’s painting of the Duke of Wellington for the National Gallery, mounts his own protest. He steals and hides the painting, sending ransom notes saying The Duke would be returned if the government invested more money in care for the elderly (including free television for pensioners). He is arrested and put on trial much to the consternation of his long-suffering wife, Dorothy (Helen Mirren).

The reason for the service is to give thanks to God for our animals and the love they both give and inspire in us. It’s really lovely to welcome pets and their owners into the church, particularly some of the people and dogs who are walked in the churchyard.
Steve, the Curate says: “any animal is welcome as long as it is under control! It’s a joyful service and we look forward to seeing you and your pets. You can bring a photo if your pet won’t cope with other animals being around”
It is a short service, lasting about 30 min utes which is just the right amount of time for the animals and children who attend!
Are you a Friend of St Mary’s?
Over the years we have had all sorts of pets, including dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, tortoises, hamsters, cats... and even stick insects and goldfish!
So do come along on Sunday October 2nd at 4pm - you are very welcome, with or without a pet!

There is a modern museum dedicated to his life and works and an area known as Espace Van Gogh whichhas a central ornamental garden surrounded by buildings which house 4 or 5 exhibi tions during the festival. Van Gogh enjoyed the quality of light in Southern France which is also to my liking for photography. This strong directional light provides the opportunity to take high contrast images which can have great impact. The shadows thrown add interest to photographs and it’s a favourite trick of mine to utilise shadows to enhance my images. We know that the word @Photograph’ means to draw with light but of course, where there is directional light, there are strong shad ows which can add a different dimension to a scene. Following on from last month’s article on the Arles Photo Festival, here are more thoughts and photographs. The event is the largest photo festival in Europe offering 40 major exhibitions housed in wonderful buildings such as museums, libraries, church es, abbeys, council premis es, period properties, large workshops, disused railway sheds and the recently completed Frank Gehry building, the Luma Tower. Multiple Fringe exhibitions can be found in smaller venues and many guerrilla exhibitions are pasted on exterior walls, dis played on easels or pegged to ‘washing’ lines around the walled city. There are also multiple digital projections outside after dark. Obviously this means there is a lot to see but the added excitement for me are the personal photo opportunities that these displays provide. Photography is allowed inside exhibitions (unlike in many UK alleries) so including other people’s art in personal photographs is fully accepted.
Rencontres d’Arles
celebration of visual lens based art. After two years of lockdown I was able to visit last month. Understandably there was quieter feel as the visitors were fewer in number as was the volume of fringe events but there was so much to see and to experience. There were 40 main exhibitions and the usual fun element of photographers pasting their worked on outside walls for people to enjoy. These pasted pictures also give photographers interesting backdrops to use in their own photography as I have done Myhere.main photograph captures the work of an artist known as DOUDOU. This monochrome work sets the scene for me to wait for a passer by in red clothing to add an accent of colour in the centre of the panoramic mage. My other two photographs were observed around the town. I cannot do justice to this festival in one article so I will continue this subject in next month’s issue. One of my favourite things to do is to capture people interacting with art. The city of Arles was once a provincial capital of Ancient Rome and is famed for inspiring Vincent Van Gogh who enjoyed his most prolific period whilst living there, producing 187 paintings.

Jon Peaty was a local artist who had an impact both locally and nationally.
Exhibition of paintings, drawings and designs coming to the Shoreham Centre in September
His work included brand andillustration,andnewspaperadvertising,magazinemuralscartoons.
However, his first love was painting and this eventually became his main source of income. He held many one – man shows mainly in the UK but also in America and undertook portrait commissions on a regular basis. His own estimate was that he had painted some 3000 or more works. Painting is the field of work for which he would most want to remembered and so among the works exhibited there will be some 30 Returningpaintings.fromwar to Southwick, Jon also wanted to make a community contribution and he quickly got involved with the Southwick Community Centre and Southwick Players. His art skills were volunteered for a range of activities including Centre advertising and events, and sets and decor for the Southwick Players. He also founded the Southwick Art Club which continues to this day.
Jon was known as a ‘character’ on the local scene, he had a great sense of fun and was a lover of landscape and nature. These qualities permeate the work on show. This exhibition will be the first showing of Jon’s work since his death. It illustrates his range of talents and will be of historic and artistic interest. Members of the family will be at the gallery most days. If you have memories of Jon or maybe if you have one of his paintings, do come along, say hello and have a chat.
AH HA!
The exhibition ‘Jon Peaty – artist 1914-1991: A retrospective exhibition of paintings drawings and designs.’ opens at the Skyways Gallery at the Shoreham Centre, Pond Road on September 10th and runs until the 30th September (not Sundays).

On 16th July the town (and surrounding villagers) came out in force to support the long-awaited Raft Race organised by the Sussex Yatch Club on the Adur River.
The SeaLions are determined to hang on to their title next year, and who knows, maybe even take 1st Place, so watch this space! If you’d like to learn more about the Lions, get involved, or help with any of our many activ ities, check out our Facebook page at www. facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.com or give us a call on 0345 833 7356. We’d love to hear from you - and don’t forget, you can always just stop by our stall at the Artisan Market for a friendly chat!
A great day was had by all and the event raised awareness (and money) for charities including Sailability, Turning Tides, St.Barn abas House & Heron’s Dale Primary School.
2pm. Whilst sadly one raft didn’t make it to the start line (and another capsized soon after), all the remaining rafts made it a short way up the river and back to finish in front of Coronation Green - to the rapturous ap plause from hundreds of excited spectators lining the bridge and Green.
Whilst many had doubts about probably the smallest craft in the water, the SeaLions raft came in a worthy Second Place! The raft was entered on behalf of the Adur East Lions, who you probably already know, regularly run events and activities in and around Shoreham, Fishersgate and South wick (such as the Buckingham Park Family Fun Day or Santa’s Grotto at Manor Cot tage, Southwick). Whilst you might be more likely to recognise the Lions on their stall at the Artisan Market each month, entering a raft, with the aid of four very able-bodied local lads, seemed a great way to get more involved with the community and raise the Clubs profile. Whilst the Lions offered their many years of life experience and various physical skills, the newly named ‘SeaLions’, made up of Tom, Gabe, Dan & Jon (pictured), built the boat entirely themselves (having never attempted such a thing), and the result was truly spectacular. I won’t mention the ‘test run’ when dubious amounts of water began entering the craft - or the dust pan which was used throughout the Race to get as much water as possible, back in the River - the end result speaks for itself and we are very grateful for their time and commitment. We couldn’t have hoped for a better result..
Success on the Seas (aka the Adur River)!
