SHOULD YOU TAKE A TAX-FREE LUMP SUM FROM YOUR PENSION TO CELEBRATE RETIREMENT IN STYLE? If you’re nearing retirement, you may be thinking about taking a tax-free lump sum from your pension. But would you be better off leaving your money invested? While it can be tempting, you should think about your short- and long-term plans. The Pension Freedoms introduced in 2015 allow you to take up to 25% of your pension without paying Income Tax at age 55, rising to age 57 in 2028. This has proved popular among retirees. According to the Financial Conduct Authority, between October 2019 and March 2020, £3.8 billion was withdrawn from pensions as tax-free cash. It could mean having the cash to turn your retirement dreams into a reality. As tempting as it may be to take the money on offer, you need to consider: What do you plan to do with the money? Whether you want to book a trip of a lifetime or lend a helping hand to family, planning where the money will go can help you understand if it’s something you want to pursue, or if there are alternative ways to fund your plans. If you simply put your tax-free lump sum into a savings account, you could lose value in real terms. Interest rates are lower than inflation, so the spending power of the money will decrease over time. How will it affect your long-term income? While you may be thinking about using your tax-free lump sum to kickstart retirement, you need to look at the bigger picture. Saving into a pension creates an income throughout retirement, not just those first few years. T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk
Taking a quarter of your pension to spend from the outset could impact the income your pension will deliver for the rest of your life. So, it’s important to consider the pension lump-sum in the context of your wider retirement plans and ask questions like: • How long does my pension income need to last? • What income do I need throughout retirement? • Do I have a buffer in case of the unexpected? It can be difficult to understand how taking a lump sum now could affect your income in 20 years and there are many ways to take advantage of the tax-free lump sum when accessing your pension. A good Independent Financial Adviser will help you weigh up the long-term impact of the decisions you make now.
If you’re thinking about making a withdrawal from your pension and you’d like to discuss which option makes sense with your retirement goals in mind, please contact us and quote PFSIS. Your initial consultation with us is free. SUSSEX’S LEADING INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISERS. A pension is a long-term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down, which would have an impact on the level of pension benefits available. Your pension income could also be affected by the interest rates at the time you take your benefits. The tax implications of pension withdrawals will be based on your individual circumstances, tax legislation and regulation, which are subject to change in the future. Wick Theatre - Clue: On Stage Back at the Barn at last, Wick Theatre Company is thrilled to present Clue: On Stage, based on the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn, written by Sandy Rustin
It’s a dark and stormy night, and you’ve been invited to a very unusual dinner party. Each of the guests has an alias, the butler offers a variety of weapons, and the host is, well . . . dead. So whodunnit? Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up. Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, Clue is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist. The play takes place at the Barn Theatre,
Southwick Street, Southwick, BN42 4TE from Wednesday 6th – Saturday 9th October 2021, at 7.45pm, plus Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Directed by Julian Batstone, assistant director: Suse Crosby. Tickets cost £12.00 from the box office, 01273 597094, or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk

First Foot Clinic: Footwear! This month Karen our podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-bySea, talks about the importance of Footwear: Footwear is a common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20.
Contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www. firstfootclinic.co.uk
Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are “acceptable” changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Quick tips to remember when shoe shopping Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest Buy the right shoe for the purpose If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/orthotics) Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly. Ensure they fit correctly Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

Community Involvement at the head of a new vision for The Meads An important green space in the centre of Shoreham is set to benefit from new turf and improved drainage for sports activities; as well as upgraded play facilities and a plan to improve its biodiversity and wildlife value.
Adur District Council is supporting a plan to upgrade The Meads Recreation Ground using natural turf and significantly improved drainage following a consultation with residents. The Meads includes an unenclosed space including a children’s play area; and an enclosed section which is used by Swiss Gardens Primary School between 9am and 4pm on school days and the public the rest of the time - but it has become worn with poor grass cover and uneven surface. The District Council owns the site but leases the enclosed school field to the education authority West Sussex County Council. Working together, the authorities decided to ask local residents and the school what they wanted to see on the site. Among 265 responses, an option for a 3G pitch did attract strong support, in particular for its year-round availability for the school’s sports activities including football, rugby, cricket and athletics. However, many consultees also favoured improved turf with better drainage for the sports area; and put forward ideas and activities aimed at improving biodiversity and encouraging wildlife; including more trees and wildflower planting. Most residents said they considered The Meads as a quiet and peaceful natural space with abundant wildlife such as bats and foxes
Photo of The Meads often evident: and there was also support among allotment holders for better access, improved drainage and upgraded facilities. Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr Emma Evans, said: “We know The Meads is a much-loved and much-needed open space in Shoreham so it was only right to consult as widely as we could about future needs for the ground. “While we knew we could not satisfy every party I think we have the next solution for the majority which is a new natural surface with improved drainage for the school, continued access to the space for residents and a real emphasis on improving biodiversity, recognising the wildlife value of this important green space.” If West Sussex County Council gives the final go-ahead to fund the project the District Council will work with the school and the local community to draw up a plan to significantly enhance the entire area. As part of this approach, the intention would be to help establish a ‘Friends Group’ for The Meads to help guide the improvements and the work to enhance biodiversity.

The Corn Swindle of 1638 On the 27th of February 1638, John Crane the Victualler to the Navy of Charles the First sent his apologies to the House of Lords. He was unable to attend on the 28th of February to explain the seizure of one hundred and thirty quarters of corn by Sir John Leedes that had been awaiting shipment from Shoreham-By-Sea to either London or Portsmouth. John Crane requested a Lords’ letter be sent to Sir John Leedes to affirm the order for the corn to be shipped. Crane promised that in return two hundred quarters of corn at a more reasonable price would be made available for sale to the general public of Shoreham. John Crane wrote ‘I use no commission, and for what I buy I pay ready money. If I have not liberty to transport corn to such places where I am to use it, I shall not be able to put bread aboard his Majesty’s ships.’ Sir John Leedes was born at Wappingthorne Manor, Steyning, Sussex in 1591. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Shoreham in 1620. He sat in the House of Commons for a week but without taking the oath, and being found out was judged incapable of sitting during that parliamentary session. Having been previously the MP for Bramber in 1614, he could not claim ignorance of the rules and so was expelled from the house and a new election for a Member of Parliament for Shoreham was held. In 1638 Sir John Leedes replied to John Crane and to the House of Lords explaining why he had seized the corn at Shoreham. It was in response to the outcry of the poor who were starving because the local farmers would not sell to them at an affordable price. Only one sack of corn had been available in two market

days in Steyning because a William Avis and a Mr Lawrence, both of Shoreham had purchased entire crops. A shipment of corn had already been exported from Shoreham and it was entered into the customs book in the name of a Mr Alcock for London. However when the ship returned it was with a certificate of sale from Southampton, a port to which Crane was not authorised to export. Sir John Leedes investigated and discovered that this corn had been intended for the navy, but had instead been sold for the private profit of Mr Avis and Mr Lawrence and seemly Mr Alcock also. Sir John Leedes then suspended further shipments of corn from Shoreham. He wrote ‘This exportation will produce a scarcity of wheat, in respect of the small quantity of barley, being the only provision for the poor as well as the rich.’ He addressed his reply to Crane, as ‘chief clerk of His Majesty’s kitchen.’ John Crane claimed that for the present service of his majesty, a grain bark was already hired to export the remaining corn from Shoreham that Sir John Leedes had stopped. John Crane feared the corn was currently in danger because the hungry people would break into and steal it from where it was being stored. John Crane promised to send Sir John Leedes a warrant cont/d page 36

Lightning Does Strike twice…. Read on to hear how St Mary’s has survived two strikes! Churches were often extremely dangerous buildings during thunderstorms in the days before the lightning rod was invented. Being so tall, they were highly vulnerable to lightning strikes. In fact, over the last hundred years St Mary de Haura church has sustained two lightning strikes. St Mary’s church has a splendid Norman Tower and flagpole rising 25 feet above and it was historically the highest building in Shoreham. As well as a lovely architectural feature, the flagpole is vital to provide lightning protection for the whole building. The present flag-mast was erected in 1903 to replace the flagpole from 1866 which was damaged in severe storms. There has been a flagpole on top of St Mary’s tower for over 300 years. In the summer of 1929, lightning damaged the Tower, South Transept and the Organ. Repairs took 2 years and in the aftermath of this rather traumatic event, the church’s lightning protection was reviewed and the whole system was renewed. The second lightning strike came in the early hours of Friday 3rd of November 2000 during an “abnormal surge“ of late Autumn rainfall. Similar to 1929, there was extensive damage to the Tower roof lead work and sadly to the Organ which had been completely rebuilt and restored just seven years before. The lightning surge bounced off the conductors on the north side of the Tower travelling along the cast iron guttering directly hitting the triforium sections of the Organ, considerably damaging the Organ electrics. The church lighting system was also damaged. The total cost of the repairs was in the region of £20,000. The Organ was out of action for six months. As in 1929, the church’s lightning protection system required repair and updating. The
Lightning consultants advised us it should be tested at least every three to five years as the church tower is the highest building in the local area, plus its situated very close to the sea and near to a river estuary, and not to forget potential climate change impacting weather patterns… So, the lightning system is tested every three years and within the last two years it has been necessary to repair the protective system as high winds have weakened sections of the lightning conductors secured to the external masonry. The lightning strike of 2000 was a further cause for concern as the whole system had been reviewed and repaired in 1995 during restoration of the tower roof. As you can now appreciate, this beautiful 900 year old building needs great protection from the elements! Its not widely known, but this ancient building receives no funding from either the government or the Church of England to support its upkeep. So, it falls to the people of Shoreham to fund repairs, maintenance and restoration. You can support this work by joining the Friends of St Mary’s for just £10 (£15 household). Ian Tompkin The Parish Church of St Mary de Haura Shoreham by Sea. Are you a Friend of St Mary’s? it costs just £10 a year to support the ongoing maintenance and restoration of this beautiful building in the heart of Shoreham. NHS workers get big match treat for pandemic work
A sponsor of Brighton and Hove Albion FC made a group of NHS workers from Sussex guests of honour for a recent Premier League match after being inspired by the work his daughter did as a nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chris Ruff is Managing Director of SnickersUk.com, a workwear company based in Hailsham, and is one of the kit sponsors for the Seagulls men and women football teams. For last weekend’s clash with Watford, he donated half of his match sponsorship package to six NHS workers from University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and South Central Ambulance Service, this included hospitality in the award winning Harry Bloom’s restaurant at the American Express Community Stadium. Chris said:” My daughter, Gemma, is a nurse. She works as a ward sister at the Victoria at Lewes. I saw what she went through throughout Covid and how hard it was for her and everyone working in the NHS. I saw how she was at the end of another 14hr day. I was extremely lucky, didn’t get sick, didn’t lose anyone, kept trading all the way through. Having seen what my own daughter went through, I wanted to say thank you in some small way to the absolute heroes of the NHS. I couldn’t invite the whole NHS workforce but I just wanted to do what I could for local heroes.” The football club put Chris in touch with Rob Galloway, who aside from being A&E consultant at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, is also the match day doctor at the AMEX. Rob’s match day job meant he was unable to take up the offer himself but he found six worthy recipients from across the Trust. Angie Mitchell; Hayley White; Jack Moore; Max Denyer; Lucas Zampieri; and Grant Adams all attended the game having been recommended for their efforts during the pandemic. Angie, an ICU sister at The Royal Sussex County Hospital, said: “We had an amazing time. I have been
a Brighton fan all my life so it was an honour to represent the ICU team. There was an outpouring of love to the NHS from everybody at the stadium and they all seemed very grateful for the efforts we have made over the past 18 months. We were treated so well and everyone had a great experience. “ Max, an A&E staff nurse at Worthing Hospital, added: “We received a great reception from the sponsors and staff couldn’t do enough for us. We were made to feel so welcome by everyone and had an amazing experience.” Chris added: “When they were introduced in the restaurant before the game they received a rapturous welcome, I’ve never heard applause like it. And they deserved it so much. It was a tiny gesture on my part but I just wanted to say my own thank you in a way that I could. And Brighton won 2-0 which was the icing on the cake!” Albion chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber commented, Snickers UK have been an excellent partner and supporter of the club backing both our men’s and women’s team, and this is a wonderful gesture by Chris to local NHS staff. The amazing efforts of NHS and other health workers across Sussex, and across the country in general, has been truly incredible and it is great to see their work recognised in this way. On behalf of the club, I would like to thank him for this very kind donation and his ongoing support to the club.

Shoreham Wordfest 24 September to 17 October 2021 Fast Forward Shoreham-by-Sea’s Wordfest has a stellar arts programme for autumn 2021, with the theme of Fast Forward, a celebration of words and ideas. The festival starts on Friday 24 September with Radio 4’s Any Questions? Alexander McCall Smith will launch the main Wordfest programme at Sussex Yacht Club on 30 September, appearing live by video link from his home in Edinburgh. Other authors featured include William Shaw and Elly Griffiths, Sally Bayley (Girl with Dove, Radio 4 Book of the Week), and Yvonne BaileySmith, mother of Zadie Smith, with her first novel, interviewed by Colin Grant. Environmental concerns are a major theme of the festival; there is a whole day event, Ending The War on Nature, featuring Isabella Tree of Knepp Estate and Tony Whitbread, President of Sussex Wildlife Trust. David Olusoga, the high profile social commentator, is talking about “The Job of a Historian.” There is an evening in conversation with Radio 6 Music’s Cerys Matthews and the comic poet Murray Lachlan Young will be offering his humorous take on life as well as a family event of “Cautionary Tales for Children.” There will be discussion with political journalists Katy Balls (The Spectator) and Stephen Bush (New Statesman) and former Foreign Correspondent Robin Lustig offers an international perspective. Jane Austen at Home is performed by Emerald O’Hanrahan, voice of Emma Grundy in The Archers. This one-woman drama takes place in the ancient St. Nicolas Church, visited by Jane Austen herself while staying in Worthing. There is mesmerising story telling by Mara Menzies and five family shows, including a children’s detective game with author Gavin
Milnthorpe. There is music from Laura Ward and Risen Road, creative writing and a whole day celebration of National Poetry Day on 7 October. Shoreham Wordfest’s Programme Director, Rosalind Turner said, “This year’s Fast Forward festival will take place in various venues around our lovely town, and we will also be recording and live-streaming many of the events. This means that people can participate from home as well if that is their preference. We will ensure good Covid precautions at all our events and look forward to welcoming people back to live performances.” Full programme details and tickets are available from www.shorehamwordfest.com. Tickets are also available seven days a week from Shoreham Art Gallery, 27 Brunswick Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5WA

Decay
I realise that I may be in a minority but I don’t really like or take ‘pretty pictures’. I prefer pictures that tell a story rather than, say, general landscapes, sunsets or formal portraits. I look for more gritty images that depict life, moments in time, shadows, silhouettes or texture. I’ve written about capturing texture before so I won’t repeat myself but it leads me on to a favourite subject photographic of mine which is ‘decay’. Decay creates texture, for example, peeling paint, rust, rotting wood or decomposing organic matter and it can depict a sense of place and a sense of history, of being, of existing. My image, ‘Africa Fete’ has a blend of warm colour with varying shades of yellows andbrowns with a shock of orange on the poster.
to the weather. This in turn has been pasted onto decaying wooden window shutters. The door doesn’t look as though it has been opened for many years but it seems thatsomeone has delivered a package as a brown envelope sits half way through the letterbox. A broken window above the door allows a glimpse of a blacked out interior. The previously ornate stonework is weather beaten and worn, the rendering missing, cracked and discoloured but still clinging to odd spots of paint. It asks questions: who lived there and why has it been allowed to fall into disrepair ? There is an intriguing story to be told. If you would like to be added to my mailing list for details of my workshops, please email me: steveboylephotos@gmail.com
Further inspection shows that the poster has been pasted over an older, larger poster which is fast wearing away from exposure Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

St Barnabas House Make a Will Month October is St Barnabas House’s Make a Will Month, a month when local solicitors can write or update your Will in return for a donation to St Barnabas House. The gifts people leave in their Wills are extremely important to your local adult’s hospice. During October, you can have a simple single Will written for just a £110 donation, or a simple joint Will for £160. To find out which solicitors are taking part and how Make a Will Month works, visit www.stbh.org.uk/ makeawillmonth or call 01903 254777.

Use your professional skills to help your local community Welcome to Inside Volunteering where we aim to inspire you to give a little of your time and talent to help our local community. This month we’re looking at how you can use your unique skills to help people in your community. Many of us have expertise that we’ve gained through our professional careers and qualifications. Many charities and communities can benefit from your help with particular tasks rather than a long-term volunteering role. This kind of help is highly specialised, so professional expertise is essential. It covers a wide range of volunteering roles from legal advice and representation, to architecture and accounting. We talked to Fiona, a legal professional, about the volunteering she does: Why is volunteering important? We carry out a lot of pro bono voluntary work as we believe in access to justice and know that our community engagement makes a huge difference to both vulnerable clients and the charitable and not for profit sector. What do you get from volunteering This voluntary work is rewarding and often results in paid instructions. My employment law courses run through Community Works give me an opportunity to showcase my knowledge and approach to employment relations. Why do you recommend volunteering to other professionals? I would definitely recommend voluntary work as the best way of putting back into our local communities. It can also result in useful training opportunities and new contacts, customers and clients. If you’re interested in using your professional skills to help a charity
or local community group, get in touch! Volunteering is for everyone. Want to make a difference in your community? Community Works Volunteer Centre is here to help you get started. Visit volunteer.bhcommunityworkas.org. uk to search for a local volunteer role. To arrange a chat with an adviser, call 01273 234023 or email volunteercentre@bhcommunityworks.org.uk.

Appy Days A selection of apps that are transforming the lives of blind and deaf people. SIGHT - Virtual vision restored The non-profit project Be My Eyes, invented by a partially sighted man named Hans Jørgen Wiberg, provides an easy way for partially sighted people to get around the multitude of small obstacles and challenges they might encounter, day-to-day – from reading the small print on a train timetable, to checking an expiry date on a pint of milk. Be My Eyes works by connecting blind and visually impaired people to sighted volunteers via a remote video connection. Through the phone’s camera, the blind person is able to show the sighted individual what they are looking at in the real world, allowing the volunteer to assist them with any of their visionrelated problems.
The app launched in 2015, and boasts almost 2.5million users across 150 countries. HEARING - A world of words for the hard of hearing - Rogervoice is an app that produces a live transcription of a phone call, displaying spoken content on the screen, before allowing the recipient to respond. It can translate over a hundred different languages, and thus far over two million calls have been made using it.

New Year, New President Adur East Lions 2021 -2022 Last month’s Inside magazine said farewell to Lion President Pearl and highlighted her achievements.
This month the Lions are welcoming incoming President, Trevor Burchell. Here are a few words from Trevor: “I would like to introduce myself as the new President of the Adur East Lions, my name is Trevor Burchell, and I have lived in Southwick and Shoreham for all my life. I have a financial services background and I played cricket for Southwick since aged fifteen until my retirement from the game – since then for many years I have been involved with Sussex hockey as an umpire/assessor and am also an umpire on the Sussex Cricket league panel. I have been a member of the Lions for the past five years and during that time, I’ve made new friends and enjoyed giving something back to the local community by helping with fundraising events, which include the Annual Donkey Derby, Christmas sleigh, street and event collections and being Santa at the local Mayberry’s Garden Centre - all monies collected are used for the benefit of the local community.

The Corn Swindle cont’d from the king if he allowed this corn to be exported. Although Mr Alcock’ s name had been used, as he was a victualler for the navy, it turned out he actually had nothing to do with the Southampton swindle. Crane, to protect his man, claimed to have ordered the shipment of corn to Southampton himself. Mr Lawrence wasn’t known to either of them and disappeared. William Avis, in fear of his life, fled from Shoreham. Sir John Leedes was elected as Member of Parliament for Steyning in 1640. He took no part in the English Civil War that followed two years later. It was a war partly caused by King Charles I laying a heavy burden of taxes on the English people and leaving them short of food and money. Judy Upton

Authors for Autumn
Lose yourself this September within the pages of these thrilling fictional offerings. Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian (September 9) Thriller lovers will enjoy getting stuck into Vera Kurian’s fresh take on the psychopath trope whose main protagonist is Chloe, a ‘First-year student, ordinary, legging-wearing, girl next door...and highly intelligent diagnosed psychopath.’ A sharp, electrifying and hugely entertaining thriller with an antiheroine who will work her manipulative magic on you. Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty (September 14) Fans of Moriarty will revel in the twisty, thrilling joys in this highly anticipated release, centred on the disappearance of wife Joy Delaney. No note, no calls, her bike missing – it’s natural that tongues will wag…
but for the children involved there is a much more terrifying question: did they ever know their parents at all? The Magician by Colm Tóibín (September 23) The Magician tells the story of Thomas Mann, whose life was filled with great acclaim and contradiction. Through war, he would have six children and keep his homosexuality hidden; a man forever connected to his family and yet bore witness to the ravages of suicide, eventually winning the Nobel Prize. The Hill We Climb and Other Poems by Amanda Gorman Anyone who watched the
inauguration of the 46th President of The United States, Joe Biden, will remember the stirring and highly emotive reading by Amanda Gorman of her poem The Hill We Climb. Now presenting her debut collection of poetry under the same name, Gorman further proves her extraordinary talent and potential as one of literature’s brightest rising stars.
