The Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust The Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust and Environment Agency have begun a partnership project which will assess how working with natural processes can help reduce the impact of heavy rainfall on properties and infrastructure across the River Adur catchment Over the next 18 months we will work with landowners, farmers, and communities to increase knowledge not only of where flooding occurs but also to collect thoughts and insight as to where flood “wet-spots” might be. This will enable the development of a co-designed strategy to help secure the funding needed to achieve the project’s ambitious goals.

Working with natural processes such as the implementation of Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques is based on the principle of working with the river system and its floodplains to slow and store water in a more natural way.

This can also provide multiple benefits to land-

management.

• Supporting improvements to soil structure and rebuilding levels of organic matter to increase landscape permeability.

• Modifying flood embankments to improve channel diversity, water holding capacity and/or re-connecting rivers with their floodplains.

Additional benefits which these interventions will provide include: • Reduced soil erosion and sedimentation loss to streams and rivers • Increased carbon capture and storage • Improved water quality • Creation of new habitat to help restore biological diversity laying the foundations for a River Adur Nature Recovery Network.

Architecture, Patterns and Shapes My images this month feature architecture in many forms.

You don’t have to show an entire building, just select an interesting shape, design or reflection. You can create an abstract or a distorted, refracted view of the world. Look for light. Side lighting emphasises texture, top lighting will give shadow, adding darker tones to the colour palette or contrast to monochrome conversions.

Monochrome can remove images from reality and when photographing reflections, can create a fantasy world, an illusion.

snippets of construction but I wonder if you have ever considered their pictorial potential.

Granny Lila’s Childrens books New local author - Lila-Ann Gray has lived in the beautiful village of Steyning since 1995, often visiting before that as a child. She ran a shop and BnB in the High Street for some years.

“I’ve always wanted to write childrens stories but life just kept getting in the way even during retirement. At 72 and with 2 great grandchildren I realised I had to make the dream a reality.

My eldest great granddaughter aged 3 shares my passion for fairies, magic and animals that talk and whenever we are out we get lost in the wonderful world of our imaginations.

To date I have written 11 childrens books for ages up to 6 years. The illustrations by Lancing artist Jean Darling really bring to life the magic of the stories.

My first book is called The Lonely Christmas Tree and is a Christmas story with a twist. A little Christmas tree finds himself left in a wood by his human family.

Find out what happens to him over the coming year until they return for him on Christmas Eve. A story

‘Out of The Frying Pan - Judy Upton has her first novel published!

Shoreham-by-Sea playwright and writer of the monthly history article for Inside Shoreham magazine has just had her first novel published by Hobart Books.

‘Out Of The Frying Pan’ is a lively and lighthearted crime novel that centres on sculptor Vonnie Sharpe, who aided by her arty friends and a hapless bank robber, investigates a kidnapping. With wry observations and colourful characters, ‘Out Of The Frying Pan’ is a roller-coaster ride through the local artistic community.

Previously Judy has had plays produced at venues including the Royal Court and National Theatre and on BBC Radio 4, but this is the first time she has turned her hand to writing a novel.

La Serenissima - The Golden Era of Music in Venice: October 11th 2021:

Patrick Craig will explore the rich musical traditions of Venice, Claudio Monteverdi, Gabrieli, Lotti, Cavalli and Albinoni. We will hear music from Antonio Vivaldi, the other towering figure of Venetian music, who created music both for the opera stage and the female musicians of the Ospidale della Pietà.

Storrington Film Nights Storrington Film Night is organised by the Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District.

The next film on Wednesday October 13th, will be “Dream Horse”, starring Toni Collette and Damian Lewis. The film tells the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely race horse bred by small town Welsh bartender and his neighbours.

The showing commences at 7.30pm, at Sullington Hall, Thakeham Road, RH20 3PP. All Government Covid guidance will be Observed.

The November film, on Wednesday 10, will be “The Good Liar”, starring Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen.

Tickets are £5, and are available from the Card Shop in Storrington. Any unsold tickets will be available on the door, on the night.

Farnefold versus Farden Sir Thomas Farnefold of Steyning, Sussex was born in 1599. His father was Richard Farnefold and his mother Dorothy, daughter of Thomas Parson, a Steyning yeoman.

The Farnefold family had resided at Gatewick House Steyning since the 1540s and Thomas inherited the estate in 1611 at the age of 12. However he became a ward of the Crown with Sir Thomas Leedes appointed the wardship. In 1613 Leedes moved to the Netherlands with the Farnefold estate being transferred to Sir Edward Sackville and then to Bartholomew Rogers, usher of the Court of Wards.

Rogers married Farnefold to his eldest daughter Dorothy in 1616.

Bartholomew Rogers got permission from William Knollys the Viscount Wallingford, and Master of the Wards to cut down the estate’s timber. In 1621, upon the death of Rogers, Sir Thomas Farnefold now aged twenty-two, petitioned parliament that his estate had been left bare of trees and that a sum of £3000 had been embezzled from him. However the unresolved dispute with Knollys resulted in Sir Thomas Farnefold being imprisoned in 1622 in the Marshalsea Prison.

This did not stop Sir Thomas Farnefold, upon his release, being elected Member of Parliament for Steyning in 1624 and then again in 1625. In 1627 he contested the appointment of a Bartholomew Rogers heir as usher to the Court of Wards, repeating the claim that his Farnefold estate had been embezzled. Sir Thomas Farnefold was then himself made Usher of the Court of the Wards. In 1628 he was elected to parliament again.

In 1634 Sir Thomas Farnefold, while in prison for a second time, complained that William Winchell, arms painter and stainer of St George’s parish, London, had falsified and fabricated the genealogy of a Peter Farnden of Sedlescombe Sussex. Peter Farnden was an ironmaster who owned the iron forges at Crowhurst, Brede, Westfield and Beckley.

Winchell had given Farnden the ancient shield of arms and genealogy that actually belonged to Sir Thomas Farnefold.

Representing Sir Thomas Farnfold in the case held in the Court of Chivalry on the 26th of April, the 3rd and of 21st of May 1634 was the solicitor Doctor Arthur Duck. In a statement of evidence, Doctor

Gatewick House Duck explained, “many individuals of plebeian origins and parentage, frequently and daily bear and display the arms and insignia of ancient gentry on their shields, windows, seals and in their funeral pomp, against the law of arms and to the disgrace and injury of the ancient nobility and gentry of this kingdom. Through this practice many errors and abuses were perpetrated to the injury of the nobility and gentry.”

Winchell, the arms painter, in testimony claimed he knew of no coat of arms being falsified until he was shown his work. He then confessed that the Farnden brothers Peter and Richard had originally shown him the coat of arms and commissioned him to paint it for their father’s funeral. Doctor Duck called for Winchell to be suspended from his position as licensed arms painter to the Earl Marshall and requested that Winchell was committed to the custody of the knight marshal Edmund Verney. The coat of arms in question when painted upon a shield was coloured purple with two leopard heads about a yellow chevron filled with red shields, and beneath was a third leopard’s head.

In April 1640, Sir Thomas Farnefold was elected to the short parliament, as the House of Commons sat until November the same year. He was then elected again as MP for Steyning in what became known as the long parliament, as the session lasted until March 1644. However ill health prevented him from sitting as an MP this time around and he died in 1643. He was buried at Steyning in March 1644 Author: Judy Upton

Gingerbread House Fun This will be the 4th year of having gingerbread house fun. After the amazing success of selling 613 houses last year, Safe in Sussex wants to take the event to another dimension.

They are adding 3 more competitions and hosting a public Gingerbread House Event to show as many of the houses off as possible!

The event will be on Saturday 11th December at St Oscar Romero Catholic School in Goring-by-Sea; there will be 3 competitions being judged at the event.

One will be an adult and children’s Gingerbread House Decorating Competition (packs will have been preordered and decorated by the event) and another a Freestyle Gingerbread House Decorating Competition for anyone who makes their own gingerbread house creations from scratch every year and would like a chance to show it off.

Finally, our main signature event, the business/ community groups Gingerbread House Competition, is back for the 4th year, but this event will be held on Friday 10th December at 12 noon on Zoom. However,

we hope that as many business entries as possible will be on show at the event on the Saturday.

All the competitions will be judged on Imagination, Inspiration & Appearance.

Sausage Sizzle Event raises funds for the Rotary Polio Plus Programme

The Rotary International Polio Plus Programme provides polio vaccines, mobilizes community resources and supports operational costs related to international efforts to immunize children, detect and track cases, and eradicate polio worldwide.

To support this Worldwide action, Storrington and Pulborough District Rotary Club held a World’s Greatest Meal Sausage Sizzle event in a Member’s garden.

The ‘World’s Greatest Meal’, is a program in which Rotarians host meals - anything from two people having lunch to elaborate gourmet dinners or even sausage suppers - and ask for donations to raise funds to help end Polio. With matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WGM has raised over $7 million to date.

33 people attended the Sausage Sizzle raising £600 including donations received from many Club Members who were unable to attend.

This becomes £1,800 when the Gates Foundation trebles the donation and will fund 4,140 vaccines to immunise children in the last two countries in the World - Pakistan and Afghanistan - reporting wild polio cases.

Organiser, Rotarian Penny Barnes, said: was so good to get together again after this difficult year - the weather was perfect and we had a wonderful day. This was our 4th annual Sausage Sizzle for WGM - last year’s we had to do it on zoom!
