400 new homes in Shoreham Applications from developers to build just over 400 new homes in Shoreham have been received by Adur District Council›s planning department. If the applications are successful the homes could help the Council meet its predicted need for present and future accommodation in the town. The three proposed developments are:

•

The former Civic Centre site where developer The Hyde Group is looking to build 171 one to three bedroom flats with parking and commercial floorspace

•

Land at the Frosts Cars site on the Harbour front on Brighton Road where 183 one and two bedroom apartments with commercial space are proposed

•

The former Howard Kent site, also on Brighton Road where 21 town houses and 24 one to three bedroom flats are proposed. The new proposals have been revised down from 135 units after public opposition to a previously withdrawn application in 2018

The latter two applications include riverside walkways in their proposals. The planning department is currently undertaking notification of neighbours and a wide range of consultees and will be examining the application documents. Each application will go before the Council’s planning committee around the end of the year. If successful all developers must contribute funds for the Council to use on community infrastructure projects.

Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Cllr Brian Boggis, said: “I’m sure the planning committee will subject these applications to rigorous examination and I will not preempt their deliberations. “What I will say is that there is a recognisable need for new homes in our District so local people as well as those attracted here can live in this lovely part of the world and contribute their talents and, of course, their spending power to our community and economy. “There will be plenty of opportunity for the public to have their say too as the applications go live.”

A Chance for Fun with the Lions After such hard times for all over the past 18 months, Adur East Lions were delighted to be able to hold a Family Fun Day at Buckingham Park on Sunday 5th September.

Think of it as a Donkey Derby but without the donkeys. There were all the usual attractions classic cars, children’s rides, arena events, stalls, food outlets, beer tent and tea and cake. The new events were African drummers, the Police (the actual ones, not the group!) and fun day opening by our resident celebrity, Carol Cleveland. The Lions were helped by many local people who turned up to set up and pack away. Many, many thanks to them as without their help the event could not have happened. Most importantly, the community turned out in numbers to view the cars, watch and listen to the arena events and basically let their hair down and enjoy themselves. This wasn’t all about the money but, after allowing for expenses, the Lions raised £2,253. Every

penny of this will go out in charitable service or donations which makes Lions one of the few charities that does not employ a raft of management employees who take a huge chunk of monies raised. Several people visited the Lions membership tent and expressed interest in helping their local community and there are several ways you can do this. You can become a Friend of Lions, join the 200 club or even join in and become a Lion!

To do any of these or to find out more about the Lions you can ring 0345 8337356, log onto www.adureastlions.org or visit the facebook page www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub

Local homeless charity launches Harvest Appeal to support the growing numbers of people becoming homeless across West Sussex Turning Tides are urging the whole community to become ‘Harvest Heroes’ by donating money to enable them to buy essential items throughout the autumn and winter months ahead. Harvest Festival is traditionally a time for giving, a time for thanks and for recognising and sharing with others. For local homeless charity, Turning Tides, it has always been a hugely important time. Last year, thanks to the support of local schools and churches across the county, over £20,000 was raised which helped to feed local people experiencing homelessness throughout the winter. Financial donations given during Harvest meant the charity could buy vital fresh and healthy produce. Ruth Poyner, Head of Fundraising comments: “Financial donations during Harvest will allow us to buy fresh nutritious produce, helping us plan carefully throughout the year. Prolonged periods of homelessness can lead to malnutrition, anaemia and a host of other serious health issues. Buying fresh with funds kindly given by the community helps us care for the health and immunity of those who come to our Hubs - particularly for those who sleep rough. With your help we can meet the daily nutritional needs of the hundreds we support throughout West Sussex, during such a critical time, when Covid is still very much present in our community.” As the long term economic reality of Covid really starts to bite in our communities, Turning Tides are seeing a rapidly increasing number of people coming to them for support. Ruth continues: Many more people across our county are seeking help for the first time as they tackle job loss, bereavement and poor mental health. Another consequence of the pandemic has been increasing food poverty which ranges from being worried about where the next meal is coming from to actually going hungry on a regular basis “something we see far too often at our Community Hubs” . Claire Halford Dale, Turning Tides Worthing Community Hub Manager sees the real impact of food poverty every day when she opens the Hub to people who have been forced to sleep rough: “The majority of people who come to our Hub arrive very

hungry, and I don’t just mean the type of hunger where your stomach rumbles “ more like the hunger where you feel exhausted, dizzy, nauseous and shake from lack of nutrition. All too often the meal we provide our clients will be the only one they have that day and they have no idea where the next meal is coming from. That is really scary “ most of us take this for granted, we have snacks in the cupboard, the next meal bought and planned for. To not know when your basic physical needs might be met every day can make people feel extremely anxious and depressed. Supporting Turning Tides Harvest appeal ensures we can provide nutritious food for the growing numbers accessing our services. This generosity can also feed the soul as much as the body the people we support realise their community cares and that they are not alone. Members of the community, faith groups and schools can become a Hero at Harvest by donating to the appeal. • £10 will fill a bag of wholesome lunchtime snacks for several people having to sleep rough. • £50 will provide a basket of basics for two people living in our accommodation for a week. • £100 will pack a trolley with essentials for two people every fortnight Children across the county can get involved by becoming ‘Heroes Against Homelessness at Harvest’- a hero themed dress up day at school - each donating just £1. Faith communities could collect throughout Harvest during their services. Donations throughout Harvest will go a long way to supporting the nutrition of the growing numbers needing the charity’s help. If you would like more information about Harvest or to register to receive Turning Tides Heroes at Harvest video sign up here: https://www.turning-tides.org.uk/harvest/ or call on 01903 680740 and speak to a member of the Fundraising Team.

TreeAction for Sussex Schools Hove and Shoreham-based TreeAction’s crowdfunding campaign: “TreeAction for Sussex Schools” is on its way to raising £5000 for more trees in schools

Tree Action, a local not-for-profit environmental organisation on the Sussex coast, aims to deliver tree planting projects for schools and organise tree planting and maintenance events for the students. Their crowdfunding campaign “TreeAction for Sussex Schools” aims to raise £5000 funds to help them support more schools across the region to deliver tree planting and maintenance projects. Their key aim is to enable students to become part of tackling climate change using school and public land in Sussex, whilst connecting them with nature to improve their wellbeing. Some of the funds raised are going towards two specific schools’ projects in Shoreham and Southwick areas. The group are also planning events for young people to get involved in tree planting and maintenance events in local parks.

Health & wellbeing of residents key priority in post-COVID recovery plan Creating opportunities for residents to spend more time outdoors, enabling people to be more physically active and creating healthy and resilient workforces are among the plans for improving community health and wellbeing. The new Health & Wellbeing strategy - HealthyAW

- sets out three priorities, working with partners, community groups and businesses to support the communities of Adur and Worthing to thrive in the post-COVID pandemic landscape. While the strategy sets out plans for improving health and wellbeing for all, the priority will be the communities with the poorest health and wellbeing which have been the hardest hit by the pandemic. Among the plans set out in the strategy, include:

•

developing Going Local, a network of social prescribers who work closely with GPs to connect people into a range of community resources to tackle nonmedical issues, like loneliness, which can have a detrimental impact on a person’s health.

•

extending the reach of Adur & Worthing Wellbeing - a free service which supports residents to adopt healthier behaviours - to harder to reach and marginalised members of the communities.

•

continuing to build on and support the work of the food groups to ensure everyone has access to food.

•

delivering programmes to tackle the drivers of poverty, such as the Good Work scheme to connect people with employment opportunities, and Money Mentors which supports people experiencing financial difficulties.

Additional priorities set out in the new strategy are increasing access to green spaces for people to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, as well as creating collaborative spaces for communities and

entrepreneurs to work together on projects which benefit local residents. This is supported by a focus on building healthy workplaces, by empowering local employers to strengthen staff wellbeing. The two and a half year strategy for Adur and Worthing has been written to align with the West Sussex Joint Health and Wellbeing strategy 2019-2024 and was adopted by Members of the Councils’ HealthyAW will be integrated across the Councils’ work programmes, including housing and planning, to ensure the health and wellbeing of residents remain paramount. It also aligns with SustainableAW, a programme of work to address the nature and climate emergency, which includes actions for achieving sustainable travel and sustainable food systems across Adur and Worthing. Cllr Kevin Boram, Adur’s Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing, said: “This strategy is about placing the health and wellbeing of all our communities at the heart of everything we do and addressing the inequalities that have been exposed by the COVID pandemic. Our priority now is to build back, working in partnership with the community to develop an action plan that will support people to live their best lives.” Cllr Sean McDonald, Worthing’s Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing, said: “As well as the health and wellbeing of our residents, this strategy considers the health of the environment too. We will continue to invest in innovative projects to improve our neighbourhoods, parks and open spaces and encourage residents to travel in active and sustainable ways, such as walking and cycling.”

Sir Stephen Cave The eldest son of Daniel Cave, of Cleve Hill Bristol, Stephen Cave was born in the Clifton area of the city on the 28th of December 1820. His mother Frances was the daughter of Henry Locock, M.D. of London. Stephen Cave was educated at Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford from where he graduated with a B.A. in 1843, and a M.A. in 1846. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple on the 20th of November 1846. Cave commenced his legal career as a Justice of the Peace on the western circuit of the Law Courts. On the 7th of September 1852 he married Emma Jane Smyth, the daughter of Reverend William Smyth. On the 29th of April 1859, he was elected to be the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for New Shoreham. A huge oyster bed existed off of the coast at Shoreham and was vital to the town’s economy. During the 1860’s Mr Cave actively took part in the ‘Deep Sea Oyster Fisheries In The Channel’ debates in the House of Commons. Upon the discovery of a new species of oyster that had a different spawning season to those found in shallow coastal waters the 1839 fishery convention with France was challenged. Fishing rights in the English Channel were seemly in perpetual dispute. One of the contested points was the distance the fishing boats of both countries were to keep from each other’s coasts. On the 26th April 1861,in the House Of Commons, Mr Cave said; “No one could mistake the two kinds of oyster who had ever compared those served up at the clubs, for instance, with those sold in stalls in the streets; but few honourable members knew how great the consumption for the latter was. They were cheap, favourite food with the poorer classes. They were sent all over England, and were found at every fair and racecourse, and throughout the

manufacturing towns of the north. The Brighton Railway Company cleared many thousand pounds annually by their carriage. During the oysters’ spawning season, fishing was prohibited with the oyster beds fenced off to prevent dredging. However Mr Cave said; “It should be fully understood that the English and French could only debar each other by arrangement from dredging these beds. They were not in the jurisdiction of either power, and I understand that the Dutch and others fished there with impunity during the fence months.” This oyster-fishing dispute contributed to the hardship of the poorest in Shoreham, as it was an important industry in the town. The customs authorities of New Shoreham had strict orders to seize and destroy all oysters brought into port from the deep-sea beds between the 30th of April and the 1st of September in accordance with the protection regulations, affecting both food supply and livelihoods. On the 10th of July 1866, Mr Cave was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council and appointed Paymaster-General and cont/d page 30

St Mary de Haura - a quiet place for everyone Why is a church like St Mary’s, set in the heart of Shoreham, important to so many people? Many who do not feel drawn to the weekly services would, none the less, miss the presence of this architectural gem right in the middle of the town. The building speaks of so many things: of the generations which have lived here; of the history of Shoreham; of the continuity which this implies; of something beyond the prosaic daily round. And you can see it for miles around – the church tower rising above all the buildings in town. It is a striking landmark, drawing people to it for any number of reasons, a comforting and enduring presence. Many people write of the peace and tranquillity of the church in the visitors’ book which is available for all to sign and make comments. Some of that, of course, is down to the architecture – down to the stonemasons who so many centuries ago came to the town to construct such a large and impressive building, just half of which is still standing. When they built the church, it would have been the centre of the community in a very real way, serving as a home for all sorts of events, celebrations and activities. In those days it would have had no seating or pews, just an open space for the community to use – by far the largest indoor space for some miles around.

profound questions about their lives for generations – it is something that all humans do. Not everyone looks for their answers in an organised religion, but everyone, at some point, asks those deeper questions, and St Mary’s is a place where one can quietly think about them, in a place where those questions have been valid for many, many years. Jonathan Smith, Lay Reader at St Mary’s

Are you a Friend of St Mary’s? it costs just £10 a year to support the ongoing maintenance and restoration of this beautiful building in the heart of Shoreham. Visit the Friends of St Mary’s to join today at www.stmarydehaura.org.uk

But the peace and tranquillity also come from the fact that St Mary’s has been a place where people have thought about what their lives mean – the big questions. Even today, this is apparent from the visitors’ book, where those who have died are remembered, problems are recorded, and hopes for the future are written down. St Mary’s stands as a testament to the fact that people have been asking Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

What is a migraine? A “real” headache Migraines are debilitating and affect many of us. Jenny Davys, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, discusses this difficult condition. People who have migraines often say they are unlike a “normal” headache (though of course any headache is awful!). The pain can be throbbing or crushing in nature and affects one or both sides of the head; it may be felt behind or in the eye/s. Sometimes people see flashing lights or feel “odd” or “spaced out” before the attack – this is called an “aura”. Nausea or vomiting may occur as well as acute sensitivity to light, so the sufferer may seek refuge in a dark, quiet room. In rare cases, the migraine is “silent”, with no real pain, but other symptoms, such as muscle weakness, dizziness, disorientation and even loss of sight. What causes it? Studies show changes in bloodflow and nerve conduction are involved, as well as altered muscle contractions. Various triggers include: • Foods rich in tyramine - eg cheese, chocolate, some beers, aged or cured foods • Stress – higher cortisol levels can affect bloodflow and neural pathways • Hormone levels - many women have migraines around their periods, or perimenopause • Dehydration • Caffeine • Alcohol • Food additives • Lack of sleep/disturbed sleep • Certain smells • Drop in barometric pressure, eg before a storm • Bright or flickering lights • Medication overuse – ironically, overuse of pain medication can cause migraine

Prevention/Treatment Keeping a diary can help you discover the triggers – then try eliminating the culprit foods, finding ways to reduce stress or avoiding certain environments. Keeping hydrated, keeping moving, getting fresh air and enough sleep are essential. Your doctor may prescribe medications which can be taken as soon as the “aura” appears and may prevent an attack from developing. Studies show osteopathy and acupuncture may be helpful in treatment and prevention of migraine and other headaches. If you would like more information, please contact our team at SOC. www.shorehamosteo.co.uk 01273 567654 Remember, any severe or unusual headache may have a serious cause, so always seek professional medical advice if you are concerned about your pain.

Architecture, Patterns and Shapes My images this month feature architecture in many forms.

You don’t have to show an entire building, just select an interesting shape, design or reflection. You can create an abstract or a distorted, refracted view of the world. Look for light. Side lighting emphasises texture, top lighting will give shadow, adding darker tones to the colour palette or contrast to monochrome conversions. Monochrome can remove images from reality and when photographing reflections, can create a fantasy world, an illusion. Look for lines, straight, angled or curved, to lead the eye around the frame, to create shape and form. Choose what you include in the frame and what you leave out, whether this is done in camera at the taking stage or a crop in post processing is up to you. Experiment, take lots of pictures of the same subject but vary what appears in the frame, alter the angle by moving yourself around. If you have a DSLR, change lenses or zoom in and out. Change aperture to alter the depth of field and select parts of the image to be sharp whilst backgrounds ease into a slight blur. Perhaps you can change the height of the camera by getting down low or perhaps standing on a wall or just on higher ground. Try to record your image from a viewpoint that people are not familiar with because it is only passionate photographers that look for unusual angles so when non photographers see your images they will question how you captured the shot, it will amaze or puzzle them, especially if they are familiar with the building.

have ever considered their pictorial potential. The window reflection is from Somerset House and the archway from Marrakesh. If you would like to be added to may mailing list for details of my workshops, please email me : steveboylephotos@gmail.com Steve Boyle

The colour images here were taken at Brighton Marina so you may recognise the snippets of construction but I wonder if you Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

St Barnabas House - Hilary’s Story! In 2016, my mum, Rene, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her dearest wish was to remain in her cherished home for as long as she could and the dedicated team at St Barnabas made this possible. The support from the hospice allowed us precious time together. I could be a daughter, instead of being a carer. We could just be a family. In her last days, Mum radiated an aura of peace and contentment. It was so good to see her pain-free and comfortable. Mum passed on 2 January 2019, aged 92. I’ll always be grateful for the care and support that made her last days at home so peaceful

and dignified. Last year, we joined St Barnabas’ virtual Light Up a Life service on YouTube. It reminded us of all the incredible support we received from them. Please make a gift to St Barnabas. It will mean so much to so many people. Thank you Hilary

Remember your loved ones and support your local hospice...

Please join us for one of our Light Up a Life services of celebration and remembrance on Monday 13 December 2021 at Worthing Assembly Hall at 4.30pm and 7pm. You can make a dedication and, if you wish, make a donation in memory of your loved one by visiting www.stbh.org.uk/lightupalife or telephone 01903 254777. Registered charity no. 256789

‘Out of The Frying Pan’ - Judy Upton has her first novel published! Shoreham-by-Sea playwright and writer of the monthly history article for Inside Shoreham magazine has just had her first novel published by Hobart Books.

‘Out Of The Frying Pan’ is a lively and lighthearted crime novel that centres on sculptor Vonnie Sharpe, who aided by her arty friends and a hapless bank robber, investigates a kidnapping. With wry observations and colourful characters, ‘Out Of The Frying Pan’ is a roller-coaster ride through the local artistic community. Previously Judy has had plays produced at venues including the Royal Court and National Theatre and on BBC Radio 4, but this is the first time she has turned her hand to writing a novel. ‘Out Of The Frying Pan’ is out now and available from Hobart Books: www.hobartbooks.com/product-page/out-ofthe-frying-pan La Serenissima - The Golden Era of Music in Venice: October 11th 2021: Patrick Craig

della Pietà.

HISTORIC SEASON OFF TO A FLYER FOR SHOREHAM RFC UNDER 16 BOYS

Shoreham’s Under 16 Boys side made an impressive start to the new season with a comprehensive victory against Midhurst. Played in the magnificent setting of Cowdray Park, Shoreham got off to a flying start scoring three converted tries in the opening 10 minutes!

After a long 18 months of cancelled league fixtures and playing under strict RFU COVID rules Shoreham relished the return to a full contact game. Their defence held up against the pressure Midhurst were able to apply before with Shoreham running in a further four tries before half time. In the spirit of this friendly fixture the Midhurst and Shoreham coaches conspired to mix up the sides for the second half producing a much more even contest. Throughout the mid Sussex battle Shoreham’s large travelling support were treated to some high-quality rugby and which shows why the coaches have high hopes of a very successful season for the Under 16s. Mark Taylor, Under 16s Coach said; We’re so pleased to get back to a proper game after 18 months of playing under COVID restrictions. If we play with the same sense of sheer joy we did against Midhurst, I have hight hopes of a very successful season.

This is a historic season for the Under 16s in this Shoreham Rugby Football Club’s momentous 30th anniversary year. The plan is for them to become Shorehams first ever Colts team and move successfully into senior rugby and eventually into the Seniors 1st and 2nd XVs. Lots of volunteers are working hard to make sure that this progression happens. Coaches and players from the current Senior teams at Shoreham are happily sharing their knowledge and experience and are assisting training for this talented group of players. The Juniors and Seniors teams are always looking for new players so please visit shorehamrugby.co.uk for more information or to contact them directly by emailing info@shorehamrugby.co.uk or jamesdrummond-davies@ hotmail.com.

James Drummond-Davies, Youth Chairman said; What a great way for the Under 16s to start the season, the lads have really bonded, which will help them this season and all the way through to the Colts. The match against Midhurst ended was a 47-0 victory for Shoreham in the first half to start their new historic season off to a flyer. Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

30 President of the Board of Trade. He was reelected on the 16th of July 1866 and then appointed chief commissioner for negotiating a fishery convention in Paris, in an attempt to finally settle the long running dispute. Mr Cave stepped down as the Vice-President of the Board of Trade on the 12th of August 1867. When the Conservative government lost the general election in December 1868, Stephen Cave retained his seat but because he was in opposition, he was no longer Paymaster-General. When the Conservatives won the general election of February 1874 Stephen Cave was appointed Judge Advocate General that March and in April he was also reappointed as Paymaster-General. In October Carlo Pellegrini for the magazine Vanity Fair, drew a caricature of him, showing how influential he had become. Stepping down as Judge Advocate General in November 1875 Stephen Cave was dispatched that December to Egypt to investigate the country’s fiscal crisis. He returned in March 1876. On the 20th of March 1880 he was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. He

became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Zoological Society. He was Chairman of the West India Committee and a Director of the Bank of England and the London Dock Company. He was also appointed the Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Gloucestershire. Stephen Cave stood down as an MP for New Shoreham on the 24th of March 1880. He had made five hundred and thirty contributions in parliament, having sat on various committees asking questions that scrutinised the proposed bills set to become law. He died aged fifty-nine in Chambéry, Savoy France on the 6th June 1880. By 1909, Shoreham’s importance as an oyster port was over. The shellfish had been over-fished locally and were starting to fall out of favour as a fashionable food. Larger boats now fished further offshore and Shoreham’s new harbour couldn’t support them.

The Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust The Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust and Environment Agency have begun a partnership project which will assess how working with natural processes can help reduce the impact of heavy rainfall on properties and infrastructure across the River Adur catchment

Over the next 18 months we will work with landowners, farmers, and communities to increase knowledge not only of where flooding occurs but also to collect thoughts and insight as to where flood “wet-spots” might be. This will enable the development of a co-designed strategy to help secure the funding needed to achieve the project’s ambitious goals. Working with natural processes such as the implementation of Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques is based on the principle of working with the river system and its floodplains to slow and store water in a more natural way. This can also provide multiple benefits to land-

hedgerows, both known to benefit flood risk management. • Supporting improvements to soil structure and rebuilding levels of organic matter to increase landscape permeability. • Modifying flood embankments to improve channel diversity, water holding capacity and/or re-connecting rivers with their floodplains. Additional benefits which these interventions will provide include: • Reduced soil erosion and sedimentation loss to streams and rivers • Increased carbon capture and storage • Improved water quality • Creation of new habitat to help restore biological diversity laying the foundations for a River Adur Nature Recovery Network. If you are affected by flooding or are interested in getting involved in creating a more resilient landscape, then please get in touch.

Tara Dawson – NFM Project Officer Email: tara.dawson@oart.org.uk owners, farmers, communities, and wildlife. Examples of NFM techniques include: • Introducing leaky woody debris dams to slow the flow and create in-channel habitat. • Introducing wetlands, ponds, and scrapes as features in the floodplain to provide increased water storage, providing both flood and drought resilience. • Seeking opportunities to create floodplain woodland or reinstate historic cross-slope Have a local editorial item? Granny Lila’s Childrens books New local author - Lila-Ann Gray has lived in the beautiful village of Steyning since 1995, often visiting before that as a child. She ran a shop and BnB in the High Street for some years. “I’ve always wanted to write childrens stories but life just kept getting in the way even during retirement. At 72 and with 2 great grandchildren I realised I had to make the dream a reality. My eldest great granddaughter aged 3 shares my passion for fairies, magic and animals that talk and whenever we are out we get lost in the wonderful world of our imaginations. To date I have written 11 childrens books for ages up to 6 years. The illustrations by Lancing artist Jean Darling really bring to life the magic of the stories. My first book is called The Lonely Christmas Tree and is a Christmas story with a twist. A little

Christmas tree finds himself left in a wood by his human family. Find out what happens to him over the coming year until they return for him on Christmas Eve. A story that brings to life the wonderful world of childrens imaginations, teaching them that nothing is impossible. “ Look out too for the start of a new series: The First Magical Adventure With Granny. ‘Crystal the Fairy’ due out soon. Hundreds join ‘Shoreham Poplar Front’ to save habitat Local Shoreham residents join the ‘ Shoreham Poplar front’ to save a poplar tree which could face the axe.

The tree which is near to the Duke of Wellington Pub, Brighton Road, could be felled for a proposed development of new flats. The decades-old Poplar tree provides an increasingly scarce habitat to an abundance of insect and bird-life, all of which contributes to local biodiversity. The local group hope to convince the developers and the council to preserve this tree; rather than destroying it; making it a feature of the new development, should this go ahead.

Any support you can offer would be greatly appreciated. You can give your support by visiting their Facebook page FB or an offer to get involved would be really really helpful.
