LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER

Based in Shoreham-by-Sea and working across Sussex, Kate from KM Garden Design brings contemporary, innovative design to any sized garden or landscape.

Combining a life-long love of gardening and green spaces with over 20 years’ experience working in social care and mental health, I understand how a positive connection to our environment benefits us all. Over the years, I’ve walked alongside people going through the toughest of times and I’ve seen first-hand how being in and around green spaces helps people restore and recover their equilibrium. Surrounding ourselves with nature is proven to enhance wellbeing and investing in a professionally designed outdoor space can be truly life enhancing.

In the summer of 2022, I co-designed a show garden, A Moment of Calm. Sharing a garden directly with the public was amazing. I believe gardens are for people to use, not just to admire from afar, so during the show, it was important for people to actually step into the garden and ‘be’ in the space to fully experience it. Everyone responded extremely positively and many took away ideas to use in their own gardens. I love sourcing exactly the right materials for the spaces I create and for A Moment of Calm, I sourced locally reclaimed timber including some decommissioned sea defences from Worthing beach which made stunning sculptural pieces.

Whatever your budget and whether you want a space for work, rest, play or any combination of these, I will take the utmost care to design and deliver a sympathetic, stylish response to your brief.

MORE

The amount of wealth that’s accessible through equity release is on the rise. It’s something more people are using to boost their income later in life for a variety of reasons.

Equity release is a type of long-term loan that allows you to take out cash from the value of your home.

The most common way of doing this is through a lifetime mortgage. With this option, you don’t have to make loan repayments. Instead, the money you borrow, along with any interest accrued, is paid when you pass away or if you move into long-term care. However, there are drawbacks to consider too. As the interest payments are typically rolled up, the amount owed can quickly rise and affect what you leave behind for loved ones. It can also limit your options in the future.

So, why are people turning to property wealth later in life? Research from Canada Life revealed the top reasons why people are using equity release.

1. To pay off mortgage debt: Half of the people that use equity release use some or all the cash to pay off an existing mortgage. While you’d still have debt after using equity release, you won’t need to make repayments.

2. To make home improvements: More than a third of people plan to use some of the money to make home improvements to create a more comfortable environment.

3. Support day-to-day living costs: As the cost of

living rises, it’s not surprising a fifth of people are using equity release to boost their income for day-today costs.

4. Provide gifts to family and friends: According to Aviva research, more than half of those over 55 want to provide gifts to their families during their lifetimes rather than leaving an inheritance. This is reflected in the fact that 15% of people who have used equity release plan to use some of the wealth to provide gifts.

5. Make substantial one-off purchases: Finally, a significant proportion of people are using equity release to make a substantial one-off purchase. These include a holiday (14%), buying a new property (12%), and buying a new car (10%).

Is equity release right for you?

Equity release can be useful, but it’s not the right option for everyone.

Before you apply for equity release you should ensure you explore other options too. By going through your complete financial plan and the implications of using equity release first, you can have confidence in the decision you make.

PEOPLE ARE TURNING TO EQUITY RELEASE TO BOOST THEIR INCOME.
As a mortgage is secured against your home or property, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Equity released from your home will be secured against it. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.

Remember your loved ones and support your local hospice 2022 Registered charity number 256789

Celebrate the lives of the people you love and support your local hospice.

St Barnabas House invites you to join the Light Up a Life gatherings on Monday 12 December at 4.30pm or 7.00pm at Worthing Assembly Hall.

This is an opportunity to come together and remember those we love and be thankful for the time we had together.

Making every moment count

Olivia’s mum, Michelle, spent her final weeks at St Barnabas House. Here, Olivia kindly shares Michelle’s story and explains what the hospice means to her whole family.

My mum, Michelle, was the glue that held our family together. So, we were devastated when she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Mum was adamant that she wanted to be cared for at St Barnabas House, and the hospice soon became the family’s second home.

Seeing her friends and watching her grandchildren play in the gardens brought mum so much joy. She also got to meet her new granddaughter, which was really special.

On 4 November 2021, surrounded by her loved ones, mum closed her eyes for the last time. It’s hard without her, but we’ll always be grateful for the quality time St

Barnabas gave us.

A donation to Light Up a Life is my way of saying thanks for everything St

Barnabas did for us. For me personally, it’s a way to remember my mum and keep all those memories we made together alive. Please visit www.stbh.org.uk/lightup-a-life or call 01903 254777 to book your free tickets and make a dedication.

The Brighton Re-Numbering Scheme

In the 1950s, Britain’s telephone network was operated by the (General) Post Office. Sussex was included in the Home Countries Region and Brighton’s six telephone exchanges had a maximum capacity to accommodate 10,000 numbers.

In the 1950s, Britain’s telephone network was operated by the (General) Post Office. Sussex was included in the Home Countries Region and Brighton’s six telephone exchanges had a maximum capacity to accommodate 10,000 numbers. It was realised this had become insufficient and it was forecast that soon no new telephone numbers could be issued. The GPO decided upon a re-numbering scheme replacing the specific Brighton area dial code with a standard Post Office dial code. One of the exchanges affected by this change was Southwick. Under the old linked numbering scheme it was known as ‘Southwick Satellite On Hove Dialling Code 7.’ The number of lines running into the exchange was reported to be unknown in engineering records that dated back to 12th of November 1927. A telephone exchange was generally a room of switchboards that was connected to another room filled with a wire jungle of telephone lines running into the building. When a call was made, it was to an operator at the exchange who plugged a cable into the switchboard to connect your line to the number you were calling.

The Re-Numbering Scheme took place in February 1950. The operation was a mammoth task carried out in two parts. The first part was compiling all telephone records. Letters informed GPO customers that their telephone number was to change

by prefixing the existing four-figure number with an area code. The GPO then drew up work schedules for their engineers. Priority in changing the phone numbers was given to telephone boxes, payphones, government and private company exchanges and blocks of flats. A special self-feed numbering machine generated new number labels for the telephone circuits. In the second part of the operation two hundred engineers working in 20 groups and managed by four GPO officers were sent out to the area junction boxes and to customers. The modifications were made to switch a telephone line over to a customer’s new telephone number.

The GPO issued a new telephone directory. Rottingdean and Southwick exchanges were made independent of the Brighton network to provide a greater flexibility and availability of phone numbers. Engineers used portable Changed Number Equipment to overcome any engineering problems that occurred between old numbers yet to change and new numbers already changed when connecting a call. What was known as ‘second selectors’ were installed at the satellite exchanges of Southwick and Rottingdean. A final transfer over to the new telephone number scheme involved changes to switchboard circuits

13 Please mention Inside Shoreham & Southwick when responding to adverts - Support Local Businesses

and junction box re-routing of lines at the exchange.

On completion of the scheme a total of 804 telephone lines were installed at the Southwick Exchange. On a 20 year forecast to 1970 the number of lines was expected to increase to 1750. After the work was done, the new code for calling the Southwick exchange from the Rottingdean exchange was 883. Calling from the Brighton exchange, the code for Southwick was 83. Upon completion of the scheme on the 13th of February 1950, 37,000 telephones numbers had been changed in the Brighton area over a period of 10 days. With a remaining 400 telephone lines to install or convert to a new number, the GPO described the scheme as an excellent example of

teamwork.

The source for this article came from the ‘Post Officer Electrical Engineers Journal Volume 44 January 1952 Part 4.’ This was a quarterly technical manual published by the Institution of Post Office Electrical Engineers from 1908. Over 74 volumes it documented the evolution and changes to the British telecommunications industry.

In 1972 the journal had a readership of 38,000. In 1981 the Post Office’s telecommunications arm became British Telecom and it was privatised in 1982. The institution changed its name to the Institution of British Telecommunications and the POEEJ ceased publication, replaced by the new journal, British Telecommunications Engineering.

The Eastern Influence in European Jewellery by Patricia Law Monday 14 November 2022

The influence of the East on European jewellery pervades in all its aspects. This lecture looks at the gemstones that were traded and exported to Europe, such as pearls from the Indies in Roman times, and the gems in the Crown Jewels. There are rubies from Burma, sapphires from Kashmir and Ceylon and Imperial Jade from China. With these gemstones came influences on styles and the way that jewellery was worn. Some pieces were directly copied and at other times simple motifs were added to existing styles. Techniques too were learnt, such as the Japanese cloisonné enamelling used by the French jeweller Falize. This lecture aims to show the glamour of the East and how the West embraced and absorbed its myriad influences.

Century 21 – Barr’s has beenborn out a genuine love ofproperty

If you’re looking for help and guidance with your property sale or purchase in and around the Portslade, Fishersgate, Southwick and Shoreham areas, please meet Century 21- Barr’s.

Century 21 – Barr’s has been born out a genuine love of property and a dissatisfaction with the service received from agents, when sitting where you are now. Our mantra is to treat and serve you, the client, in the way we would want for ourselves. Century 21 may not be a name that you are immediately familiar with, but it’s growing fast in the UK with over 50 offices. We think you will find us accessible, efficient, effective and proactive, but pretty nice to speak to at the same time. Feel free to drop us a line for an informal chat, just so you can gauge our

suitability for yourselves. Having been through it all a number of times from the buyer/seller positions, our proposition is founded in the learnings taken, rather than being based on a formulaic approach or a manual.

There are many additional strings to our bow as well. Not only are we nice to speak to and able to do all the usual estate agency stuff, but we can also get you great advice and deals on mortgages, solicitors and perhaps even a shortterms rental if your dream home isn’t available the moment you decide to sell your current place.

Be as involved as little or as much as you like, but leave the hard work to us.

Street Photography

which are essential for later reminiscences and I look for whatever catches my eye and captures my imagination.

This image was made in Fuerteventura earlier this year. I suppose it would be called a ‘street photograph’ although this term covers many styles of approach and subject matter but basically describes images which are not set up or posed but merely capture unrepeatable moments in time. I like to find interestingback grounds and then linger for a while to see if something happens in the foreground which can complete a scene. One favourite approach of mine is to be able to colour match a foreground with a background so I was pleased when a woman dressed in green and pink walked past this painted ocean scene at the harbour. The trick is to be observant and ready to capture the scene but to wait until the moment is right. In this case, I waited until she was framed in the doorway. Frames within an image can draw the eye of the viewer and isolate the focal point of the scene. If I had clicked the shutter button

a second earlier, the figure would have had the wooden bench protruding from her back. A second later, she would have had her head in the fish’s mouth - this would have made an amusing im age perhaps but it would have lost the simplicity of the composition. It is also important to catch her mid stride so she does not look static and posed.

I was also attracted to the contrast between the horizontal lines in the shutter style door and the vertical lines created between the slats of the wooden bench. The window on the right hand side balances with the large fish on the left. If you look carefully, even the bottle of suncream in her hand is the same green as parts of the background.

Men’s Health: Movember It’s good to talk

If you’re a guy who waits until something is seriously wrong before going to the doctor, you’re not alone. Local Urological Surgeons, Simon Woodhams and Dan Magrill open up about Men’s Health.

It’s a common problem among men…a reluc tance to talk about our health and more specif ically, the prostate, penis or bladder. It’s under standable really, problems ‘down there’ don’t exactly make us feel our most masculine and talking about any type of health issue is never easy. But we need to face up to the problems. Mr Woodhams explains ‘Women are way ahead of us in terms of raising awareness for their own cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer. Men are lagging behind simply because of a reluc tance to talk about these problems. It’s an issue that is getting better. Now, for example, we have ‘Movember’ when men are encouraged to grow a moustache for a month to help highlight male cancers. Movember, not only creates a fun way to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues, it also starts conversations about these issues. But there’s still a fair way to go. The biggest challenge is to not only to get men to spot symptoms, or to see their GP, but to talk about it openly. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.’

Mr Magrill continues, ‘It’s not the easiest thing to talk to your doctor about but early detection of conditions along with raising awareness in Men’s Health is important. It’s understandable why men shy away from issues with their urinary tract, lumps on the testes, erectile dysfunction or pros tate but, like most illness or disease, we need to know more about these problems, and although the more we search for them, the more cases we find, it does help us get closer to helping people live longer and improve their quality of life. The earlier we spot symptoms, the greater the chance of finding curative solutions for them.’

Symptoms don’t always mean bad news and that if men visit their doctor early on, they might save themselves a whole lot of worry. Many of the signs that people associate with the prostate can be harmless. For example, problem urinating can be caused by the enlarging of the prostate gland, but that does not necessarily mean cancer. Also,

erectile dysfunction can actually have more to do with the heart and can precede heart conditions that may present themselves in a few years time.

So, it’s definitely worthwhile being examined to manage, prevent or treat that.’

Sussex Voiceworks is a mixed voice choir based in Shoreham-by-Sea. Our members live mainly in Southwick, Shoreham and Worthing but also Brighton & Hove and up the Adur valley. We welcome new singers at any time and do not audition. Simply come along to one of our rehearsals, meet our ‘singing buddies’ and try us out. Our dynamic young Music Director, Sarah Forbes, ensures that we have fun as well as a good work out and we end the rehearsals feeling invigorated.

The choir meets weekly on Mondays from 7.15-9.15pm at St Peter’s Church, in Shoreham. We rehearse between early September and the end of June and perform up to three concerts; at Christmas, in the Spring and at the end of the season. These often include professional soloists and musicians. In addition, we hold an annual ‘Come and Sing’ workshop, sing for charity and go on a biennial UK tour over May Bank Holiday.

Our next event will be a Christmas concert at St Mary de Haura church in Shoreham on Sunday 11th December. The programme will include Schubert’s Mass in G and a selection of popular Christmas music. Following that, on Thursday 15th December, we are delighted to return to the Lifeboat Station at Southwick for our annual carol event to raise money for the RNLI. The choir performs aboard the beautiful Tamar class lifeboat and the audience joins in an evening of joyful carol singing.

One of the delights of Sussex Voiceworks is the range of musical styles we cover. The Christmas and Spring concerts tend to include one sub stantial choral piece, along with carols/anthems/ shorter works. Examples include John Rutter’s Mass of the Children, the Faure Requiem, and Howard Goodall’s Requiem ‘Eternal Light”. We hire professional soloists and musicians to support these pieces and have also performed with children and youth choirs. For the summer concert, we often sing lighter works from opera, jazz, musical theatre and popular music such as the West Side Story medley, the songs of Irving Berlin, Gershwin, Simon and Garfunkel.

Full information, including the current season’s programme, upcoming events and contact details is available on our website at www.sussex voiceworks.com , or you can email or phone the Membership Secretary and Chair, Helen Prance, via sussexvoiceworkschoir@gmail.com and on 01273 494490. Dog owners could have to keep their pets on a lead

Dog owners could have to keep their pets on a lead Anyone walking their dogs on the Adur Ferry Bridge footpath, and on the riverbank footpath between Brighton Road and Riverside in Shoreham Beach, would have to keep them on a leash under the proposals.

Adur District Council will also vote to ban dogs entirely from the play area and skate park at Lancing Beach Green and from an area of The Meads recreation ground that is leased to West Sussex County Council and shared with Swiss Gardens Primary School. The Meads was not originally intended to be part of the restrictions but a significant number of people requested the ban to protect children from the health risks caused by coming into contact with dog mess. The restrictions are part of an extension to a public space protection order that limits when and where dogs can be walked, after a consul tation run this summer showed strong support for the move. Breaching the order is a criminal offence for which a fixed penalty notice of £100 can be given.

The proposals are recommended to be ap proved at a meeting of the full Council on 20th October 2022.

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Leisure, said:

“Our open spaces are an asset for the whole community and we have a responsibility to pro tect them for everyone.

“These changes are about putting some fair restrictions in place to allow as many people as possible to enjoy the beauty of the district in safety.”

The order would replace and expand upon an existing public space protection order that expires on 18th December.

The original order bans dog fouling, sets a limit of six on the number of dogs that can be walked

by one person, bans them from recreation areas where dog exclusion orders are on display, and directs dog owners to keep their pets on a lead on roads, pavements and grass verges as well as cemeteries, allotments, car parks and Wide water Lagoon.

That would be in place for a further three years, along with the additional restrictions agreed by the Council. At the end of that period they would be reviewed to decide if they are still needed or should be amended or dropped.

The order also requires that anyone who is stopped by a police officer or designated author ised officer from the Council because they are suspected to have breached the rules, must provide their full name, address and date of birth. Failure to do so will be an offence in itself.

Separately, the Council is also looking into complaints from some residents about dogs not having to be on a lead at Widewater local nature reserve and on the intertidal mudflats on the banks of the Adur in Shoreham, which is a pro tected area as a site of special scientific interest. Officers will consider if further action is neces sary to protect local wildlife.

Help make exercise accessible to all

Exercise is great for our physical and mental wellbeing, but it’s easy to take it for granted.

People living with a disability or long-term health condition can encounter barriers to accessing physical activity. One organisation in Worthing, CYCALL, is working to make exercise accessi ble to all in our community.

Getting everyone involved

CYCALL is an inclusive cycling project based at Brooklands Park, Worthing. It helps people take part in cycling activities using specially adapted bicycles. CYCALL works with adults and children with a wide range of disabilities and long-term health conditions. It also helps older people in the community take part in cycling activities as a form of preventative healthcare.

CYCALL have a fleet of twenty-four adapted bikes and trikes including wheelchair bikes, side-by-side tandems, hand propelled trikes and go-karts. Their sessions are about more than just pedalling. The combination of exercising and being outside in nature is great for mental health and wellbeing, and the sessions helps people who feel socially isolated make new friends.

CYCALL has several volunteer roles to fill. No experience is needed “ just a passion for exercise and a desire to help others. Current volunteer roles include:

• Meeting and greeting participants

• Assisting/leading CYCALL sessions

• Basic cycle repairs and maintenance

One CYCALL volunteer said “I love it. When people say to me ‘what does CYCALL do?’, I just say it makes people smile while riding bikes, and I feel privileged to be a part of it.”

Shoreham U12 Buccaneers vs Crawley U12s - Final score was 45-10

On a day that turned out to be ideal playing conditions the Shoreham U12 Buccaneers played their first waterfall game against Crawley and put on a display that we should all be proud of.

The all-round play by both sides was com mendable, but the Buccaneers managed to edge ahead after around 10 minutes only to have Crawley equalise almost immediately. Over the next five minutes the Buc caneers managed to score two more tries where the score remained until the halftime whistle sounded.

After the break the Buccaneers immediate ly came back with a fierce counterattack to score another try within a minute of kick off. This was followed by another five tries. Crawley managed to come back towards the end of the game and get the ball over the line as fulltime loomed.

After the game the players all enjoyed

some food which was prepared by the parents and were provided with their af ter-match polo shirts provided by the club. In addition to this the Buccaneers and Pirates were provided with the first instalment of their sponsored gear kindly provided by Coastline Bathrooms.

Thanks to all who contributed to the day and to those who came to spectate.

The Positive effects of Massage on our Nervous System

Emma Bolongaro, qualified massage therapist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains the science behind why our mind and body can benefit from this therapy.

Massage has been used for thousands of years, in different forms, by many cultures all over the world. It has been found to accelerate recovery from some illnesses and is now used as an effective complementary treatment for many of our modern-day ills.

Massage techniques as applied by qualified therapists have been shown in studies to have a calming and balancing effect on our nervous system. In particular, massage influences the autonomic nervous system, ie the nerve pathways that are involved in regulating our body processes, eg heart rate, digestion etc. It is the most primitive part of our nervous system, made up of two parts -the “parasympathetic” and “sympathetic” , which developed to help us survive long ago.

When the parasympathetic nervous system is active, it stimulates the release of “feelgood” neurochemicals called endorphins, such as serotonin and dopamine. These slow down our body activity, reduce our heart rate, lowering blood pressure and in turn slows down the brain waves and deepens the breath, thus allowing relaxation of the body and mind to occur.

When the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated, eg when you jump out of bed and grab a coffee on the go, when you’re feeling stressed, anxious and under pressure in any way, the stress hormone cortisol is released into the blood stream. This increases our heart rate and raises our blood pressure, our breathing becomes more shallow and our mind and thoughts more rapid.

These two parts of the autonomic nervous system ideally need to be in balance and equilibrium, creating homeostasis in our bodies on a daily basis. This is where massage comes in. By stimulating nerve receptors in the skin, messages are sent via the spinal cord to the brain, turning ˜on the parasympathetic nervous system, releasing endorphins, and turning ‘off’ the sympathetic nervous system.

So a regular relaxing massage is a wonderful tool to help you cope more effectively with the everyday stresses of life. For more information, contact Emma or our team at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre on 01273 567654 www.shorehamosteo.co.uk
