Wellbeing Garden Colleagues at St Richard’s are gifted a stunning ‘Wellbeing Garden’ worth over £200,000 as ‘thank you’ for their hard work

Colleagues at St Richard’s Hospital have been gifted a beautiful and tranquil ‘Wellbeing Garden’, designed by Chichester based Andy Stedman, as a thank you for their hard work during the pandemic. The award-winning landscape and garden design studio, Andy Stedman Design, was originally approached last year by Love Your Hospital, the dedicated charity of St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals, to create garden designs for the hospital. However, when external funding to build the garden was unable to be secured, Andy was inspired to arrange for the garden, worth over £200,000, to be built almost entirely for free, through generous donations of time, expertise, goods and services. Within 48 hours, Andy and his team rounded up local contractors through their network of landscapers and suppliers they use on a regular basis. They also found new local contractors wanting to contribute to this fantastic project through social media. The garden, which is now open to staff, has an open seated area, secure bike storage and is surrounded by feature planters studded with architectural trees and beds full of colourful perennials. The garden also has one large and two smaller shaded canopies, which were funded by donations to Love Your Hospital’s Hospital Heroes Covid-19 Appeal. Andy Stedman said: “Being outside in a garden, in nature is without doubt hugely regenerative” lowering feelings of stress and increasing feelings of wellbeing. We are proud and very grateful to have worked together with our local suppliers and contractors to bring this garden to life for staff at St Richard’s hospital and we are excited to see their reaction to the new space! Everyone can benefit

‘Wellbeing Gardens’ designs by Andy Stedman Design

from being in an outdoor space, and we hope this garden will inspire people to make the most of their space at home to reap the benefits, whether gardening, relaxing or dining. Dr Maggie Davies, Chief Nurse, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is such an incredible donation, and this wonderful gift has helped to create a lasting space where our staff will have a magnificent and restful place to visit. We are humbled and amazed by the transformation and are sincerely grateful for the generosity and sense of community that has made this possible. Steve Crump, Director of Charites for Love Your Hospital said: “This garden transformation fits into a programme of work supported by the charity dedicated to improving outdoor facilities for patients and staff across all our hospitals. It has created a calm and tranquil space for staff at St Richard’s to spend time in away from their working environments. The biggest thank you to Andy Stedman and his team for getting this project back on track and to the many suppliers and contractors who supported it to completion. This truly will be a legacy to staff who went above and beyond for us all during the pandemic and to those who worked from the heart to create it.

Christmas – the season of goodwill and… fuel poverty! Christmas is such a busy time for the Lions, as you will know. This year will be busier than ever! We will be at:

•Southwick Square on Saturday 4 December for the Christmas market •Shoreham Town Centre on Saturday 11 December for the Farmers’ market •Southwick Manor Cottage each weekend in December with our Christmas grotto. •The streets of Southwick evenings 13-17 December. As the real Santa cannot be everywhere in the run-up to Christmas, we are looking for stand-ins for him at all the events above. If you are generally of a cheerful disposition and can say ‘Ho, ho, ho!’ in a convincing way then please do get in touch with us. Additionally, we need elves – to man the grotto and hold the buckets at the markets and accompanying the sleigh. All help gratefully received. Please contact Lion Susan Saunders in the first instance if you can help at susan_bheaz@ hotmail.com or 07813976166. This year is likely to be very difficult for some people with the choice between heating or food being a harsh reality with the hike in the cost of domestic energy so your local Lions are launching:

Thank you Donate now online at: www.lionsgiving. co.uk/Appeal/adureastwenceslas Or send your cheque payable to Adur East Lions Club CIO Charity (endorse with ‘Wenceslas’ on back) To Lion Susan Saunders, 39 Park Avenue, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 6PH (along with the gift aid form if applicable) For more info please visit: www.adureastlions. org.uk and select club projects. Don’t forget that every penny donated to the Lions goes back out again - no six-figure chief executives (or even 2, 3, 4 or 5-figure!).

PROJECT WENCESLAS Many local people struggle to afford to stay warm and cook during the winter. We anticipate that this will be especially true again this year. If you can, please pass on your Winter Fuel Payment or make a donation to us and we will ensure it goes directly to the fuel needy. By working with local agencies such as Citizens Advice we can target this need. Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

UHSussex apprentice wins city award for Covid care An apprentice at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust has won a prestigious award for work she did that had a direct impact on the treatment of patients with COVID-19.

Meghann Creffield recently won the Outstanding Contribution by an Apprentice to an Employer, at the Brighton and Hove Apprenticeships Awards, after being nominated by the Royal Sussex County Hospital pathology department where she works. She has now been nominated for the national apprenticeship awards that will be decided at the end of the month. As part of her degree apprenticeship, the biomedical Science Degree Apprenticeship graduate was tasked with designing an innovative project which would improve patient care. Meghann’s project on procalcitonin had a direct impact on the treatment of patients with COVID-19, by developing a blood test that helped clinicians to form their treatment plans. The recognition is part of a remarkable story for the 36-year-old, who lives in Kemptown, just a short walk from the hospital where she works. Just ten-years-ago Meghann was working shifts in a bar and bringing up two young children on her own “ working in a path lab helping develop treatment’s to fight a global pandemic wasn’t even a pipe dream. Meghan said: “Winning an award like this is very special and I am very, very proud. I‘ve worked towards this for a very long time and it is a long way from where I was a few years back. “I was working in a bar and bringing up my children. I never thought I would ever be able to do a degree and get to work in a place like this. “As a young mother I was unable to undertake

a more traditional degree route due to time and money constraints. Between my personal circumstances and a lack of confidence in myself, I presumed that a degree level qualification was something I could never achieve. “But once I arrived here I began to believe in myself and built relationships with people within time frames that I needed. I have been incredibly lucky to have started my working life in the scientific field as a Medical Laboratory Assistant within Pathology at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and then to be selected for this pathway and, alongside raising my family and working, I was able to complete a Foundation degree and an applied degree apprenticeship BSc.” It was while studying for the degree that Meghann found out about the blood test that eventually came to help out Covid patients in Sussex. She added: “I was burning the midnight oil again studying“ it was right back at the start

Becoming an international ice skater she appeared in such shows as “Puss in Boots” on Ice in 1952, in 1954 she toured with the Tom Arnold “Ice Revue” and danced for the Royal Family in the “Celebrity Ice Gala” at the Queens Ice Club in 1952, which brought a letter of thanks from the Duke of Edinburgh. UHSussex apprentice wins.. of the pandemic“ and I was doing some reading and research to help with my dissertation. - I found out that in Italy and China a procalcitonin blood test that I had been looking at for my study was used in monitoring how quickly Covid patients were deteriorating and helping clinicians make treatment choices based on that . “The next morning I couldn’t wait to tell colleagues at work. Based on the information I found me and the rest of the lab team were able to get the test up and running in record time for the use of doctors here and at surrounding hospitals. Meghann added: “I am very proud to realise I have helped people on the front line treat patients during this time.” Anne Trezise, Senior Biomedical Scientist at UHSussex, is also a training officer and mentor to Meghann throughout her apprenticeship

degree. She said: ”I nominated Meghann for the award and have put her forward for the national one too. She deserves it. Her application and her commitment to the course meant that she was able to come to the team with this innovative idea. It worked and this has meant an improved service for patients, which is excellent news for everyone. “The apprenticeship degree has suited Meghann’s work life balance. Our apprentices are in it for the long haul. They develop while they are here, they qualify and can hit the ground running once they start. “There are clear career pathways and once people graduate we can take them on in environments they are already comfortable in. Meghann gained a promotion once she qualified and I know she feels she can achieve her ambitions here at UHSussex “ and she can.

The Railway comes to Shoreham

In 1837, when the London to Brighton railway was commissioned by Parliament, John Urpeth Rastrick was appointed the construction engineer. The equipment needed to build the line was shipped to Kingston-By-Sea and then delivered to the Shoreham site by horses. Further along the line, in 1839, it took eighteen horses to drag the construction engine needed to build the New England tunnel. The first stage of the line to be completed linked Shoreham and Southwick and many curious visitors from across the country were given a free ride on the steam locomotives intended to work the new track. The first two locomotives were known as the Brighton delivered on the 5th February 1839 and the Shoreham delivered on 18th of April of the same year. Two other engines, the Kingston and the Eagle made the first and second train journeys upon the official opening of the line at three pm on Monday the 11th of May 1840. The Eagle gave the Kingston passenger train a helpful push after the second carriage was discovered to have a sticking brake that caused the first ever journey to be delayed at Brighton station by eleven minutes. This was with the military band of the 12th Lancers playing the national anthem to an excited crowd gathered on the platform. The Eagle was then late with its departure with the second train to run from Brighton leaving at nine minutes past four in the afternoon. The next day a train left from Shoreham station at 8am for Brighton. A regular service was then established of six trains a day, with the first train from Brighton to Shoreham leaving at 9am. Shoreham was the terminus of the line and passengers wishing to travel onwards did so by horses

drawn coach. The train fare was included in the price of the Blue Coach Service to Portsmouth. The first train from Shoreham to Brighton was at 10am. However such was the demand for trains travelling in either direction that the shortage of passenger carriages meant the daily commute was overcrowded. The third class carriages were open topped with no seating and only iron railings to stand against. A passenger would use an umbrella to protect their face and eyes from the burning white-hot ash smog belching from the steam locomotive’s chimney. In 1842 the locomotive Brighton’s boiler blew up after leaving Hove station on its way to Shoreham, scalding the driver William Cavan. Thankfully no one was injured by flying debris from the engine. Shoreham Station originally had no raised platforms and the entrance building was actually below the platform level, with passengers having to scale a flight of steps from the waiting room. The platform roof on one side was flat and narrow offering little shelter while the other platform had a sloping roof. Shoreham’s main attraction in the nineteenth century was the Swiss Pleasure Gardens, now the Swiss Cottage pub. A thousand visitors per day arrived by train with entry to the gardens included in the ticket price. Shoreham remained the terminus of the railway line until 1845 when work began to extend it along the coast to cont/d page 30

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER INVOLVING YOUR FAMILY IN YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN When you consider your financial plan, who do you involve? Often, it is done independently or with a partner, but there could be advantages to making your wider family part of the process. It could encourage younger generations to consider their own financial plan: Being involved in your financial plan can mean loved ones start thinking about their own long-term financial security. It could mean they consider things they may have overlooked before, such as the need for financial protection, or when to choose investments over savings. It can help you understand how to help your family reach their goals: You may know what your loved ones are hoping to achieve, but do you know the details? After talking through their goals, you may want to change your own financial plan. According to an FTAdviser report, just 13% of parents over the age of sixty plan to pass on wealth to their children during their lifetime. However, in some cases, a gift now can have a far greater impact on their life than an inheritance will have. Discussing inheritances can lead to better financial decisions: The report also found 72% of parents plan to pass on wealth to their children after their death. However, two-thirds said they rarely or never discuss inheritance with their children. Talking about inheritance can be difficult and can bring up many emotions. Yet, it can help your loved ones plan their own futures more effectively. T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk

It can improve your later-life plans and provide confidence in them: Later-life planning is an important part of creating a long-term financial plan. Yet, 4 in 10 parents have not discussed their later-life plans with their children. Again, it can be difficult to think about how your lifestyle and needs will change in your later years, but it is important. By involving them in the financial planning process sooner, they will be in a better position to make decisions on your behalf should they need to. It can help you create an effective estate plan: Almost 80% of families do not have any estate planning strategy in place. Of those that do, less than half of parents said their children knew exactly what the plan was. An effective estate plan can help you ensure that loved one’s benefit from your wealth when you pass away.

If you want advice on getting your finances in order, we can help. From helping you to create a financial plan to organising your pensions and other assets, and estate planning. Please contact us to discuss your financial plan and the steps you should be taking to secure your financial future and the financial future of your children. A Community within our Community Mother Philippa, from the Community of the Sacred Passion in Shoreham, talks about the life of the Community in Tanzania before their return to the UK. We proved to be somewhat of a puzzle to people when we first came to Shoreham sixteen years ago. Many thought that we were connected to the Roman Catholic Community which had lived here, but we are Anglicans and worship at St. Mary’s. There were fifteen of us at that time and we moved here as our former home was now too big for us even though the whole Community was now in one place. When we joined the Community, well over fifty years ago, there were eighty Sisters. Then we had thirteen houses scattered throughout Tanzania and our main English house was based at the hospital which we ran for people suffering from leprosy. We have had ten other houses in England over the years and one in Seychelles. As we were founded 110 years ago, our work in Tanzania has changed a lot over time. At first we worked with freed slaves in Zanzibar then ran primary schools, teacher training colleges, hospitals, where we trained nurses; we visited the elderly in their homes, prepared converts for baptism and couples for Christian marriage. We taught women needlework and how to earn a living through making church vestments and clothes for sale. After Tanzania gained its independence, the Government took over some of our work and asked us to start two girls secondary boarding schools and a training facility for nursery group leaders. Many of our former nurse and teacher students were able to staff the expanding number of schools and hospitals and it was good to see Matrons and Head Teachers whom we had taught. We were working ourselves out of a job, which is one of the aims of missionaries, although the primary aim is to bring the Good News of God’s love to his people wherever they may be.

All this active work was supported by our prayer life. As today, each day we would try to be present at the Eucharist and the day was punctuated by short services in chapel with additional times set aside for individual prayer when we remembered especially the people we worked with. Now a Community of African Sisters which we supported, and still support, has taken over our role of prayer in Tanzania and is also teaching, nursing, working with the women and orphans and leading people in trying out modern methods of farming. The hostel, which we founded for children suffering from the effects of polio, has expanded in size and now also cares for children with other disabilities. We help with funding and advice on how to become self-supporting financially. We are still in contact with the hospital which we started about eighty years ago and help when we can, as it grows into a specialist hospital and training school. Now we are retired from active work, but we still continue our life of prayer and care for each other as the five of us grow old together. Are you a Friend of St Mary’s? A real pain in the heel! Alex Thorpe-Beeston, Registered Osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explores a common foot problem. An increasingly common musculoskeletal injury that osteopaths are currently treating is heel pain. There are a number of different structures in the foot and ankle which could be responsible for this, however the one we see most often is ‘Plantarfasciitis’ (“plantar” refers to the sole of the foot and “fasciitis” to inflammation of the fascia covering the muscles and tendons). If you are experiencing a sharp, stabbing pain between the centre of the heel and the inside arch of the foot, you may be suffering with plantarfasciitis. An old term for this was “policeman’s heel” as it can be brought on by long periods of “plodding” in inappropriate footwear. There are two main culprits for developing this injury. Firstly, too much too soon! Being too over- zealous with the post-lockdown gym workouts, or rapidly increasing your daily step count without giving your feet time to recover. Secondly, a reduced efficiency of the ankle joint during the gait cycle. Patients with plantarfasciitis will often roll the ankle inwards increasing the load on the sole of the foot. This may be a result of a muscle or joint issue higher up towards the hip or lower back. If left untreated, severe plantarfascitis may lead to a heel spur, ie growth of extra bone at the heel as a response to repeated strain.

•

Gently stretching the sole of the foot for 20 - 30 seconds as shown in the photo above.

•

Reducing your physical activity level and once symptoms start to ease, gradually retuning to your normal intensity.

If symptoms persist, a thorough postural assessment, tailored treatments and rehabilitation plans are available from our osteopaths at SOC. Please contact us on 01273 567654 or info@ shorehamosteo.co.uk for more information.

The first steps to managing this injury are to ensure adequate rest and recovery - often this is an overlooked part of the recovery process especially in the acute phase. Try: •

Icing the painful area by rolling a bottle of frozen water gently under the arch of the foot can ease symptoms and reduce inflammation. Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

Light I have written before about the importance of light in photograpghy. The word photograph means to draw with light. At this time of year, even though the number of sunny days may be declining, the sun appears lower in the sky which can add emphasise to the texture on a variety of surfaces. Peeling paint is a photographer’s favourite, depicted here in the shot of the wheelbarrows. The light is enhancing the weave of the straw hat and accounts for the lengthening of the shadows in the image taken from above at the promenade in Brighton. The rather surreal and unexpected scene shot through the metal railings at a Shoreham industrial estate is brightened by the sunlight shining through the orange overalls that have presumably been hung out to dry. The fourth image was taken in the Summer but this shows how bright light can bring colours alive. The composition of this image has been chosen to just give a hint of the surrounding activities. All four photographs give a sense of place and a sense of human nvolvement even if no people appear in the frame or when they are not providing the main focal point.

Adur awarded funding towards new housing scheme Funding awarded to improve homes in Adur will be used to demolish a former sheltered accommodation block so a new housing scheme can be built in its place. The £407,000 from the Government’s Land Release Fund (LRF) will also allow for preparatory work on the Ashcroft House site in Kingston Lane, Shoreham. The LRF supports councilled projects to build strong communities and funding is often used for schemes which will significantly improve people’s quality of life. Ashcroft House has been empty since January 2020 and is set to be replaced with a housing scheme for the over 55s. A design team has been appointed and a planning application is expected to be submitted in spring next year. Councillor Carson Albury, Adur’s Executive Member for Customer Services, said:

Ashcroft House, Shoreham Eight bungalows on the site would be refurbished and new kitchens and bathrooms installed as needed. The total cost of the development will be around £11 million and the council anticipates securing £3.6 million of external funding to support the project.

“I am delighted that we have been awarded this funding which will enable us to carry out the necessary work to get this project off the ground. “We want to forge strong communities and build homes which will not only provide for our residents’ needs but will also help them to feel settled and happy.” Earlier this year Adur District Council’s Joint Strategic Committee released £540,000 from the development programme contingency budget to move towards gaining planning permission for the redevelopment. It also agreed the preferred redevelopment option, to demolish the main block to make way for more than 40 flats. All the flats will be wheelchair accessible and some will be designated wheelchair units. The new

Southwick Players Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward On the 08-12 December 2021 at The Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick, Sussex. Tickets £12 available from the Box Office book online at southwickplayers. org.uk or telephone 01273 597094.

Miss Annie Eva Fay (psychic/medium) when he was just eleven years old and posted a handwritten note to Miss Fay asking whether her son should continue his career on the stage.

Noel Coward’s wonderfully witty smash comedy

manifests itself at The Barn Theatre curtesy of the Southwick Players, marking the play’s 80th Year Anniversary from when it was first performed in the West End. Eighty years ago in the spring of 1941, as Londoners endured the Blitz, Coward slipped away to the seaside village of Portmeirion in Wales for a short one week holiday with Joyce Carey who was then penning a play about John Keats. The idea was that they would idle in the sunshine and inspire one another with ideas, but poor Joyce was left alone for much of the time because by the first morning, Coward had taken to his room with already a title for his new project ‘Blithe Spirit’, and there he stayed, smoking and rolling paper into his typewriter for 6 days, until the play was completed. Just 5 weeks later, its first performance was seen in Manchester and then soon after in June 1941, it opened in London at the Piccadilly Theatre where it knocked up 1,997 performances. Even though the comedy was about ‘death’ at a time where ‘death’ cast a dark shadow over most households, it seems that people just wanted escapism from the sadness of war at home and into the theatre for a good laugh. A lighthearted 1940s romp, the play concerns Charles Condomine (a writer) researching material for his recent book about the occult. He invites some friends, and the local medium Madame Arcati to dinner and a seance. Unbeknown to any of them, they conjure up the ghost of Charles Condomine’s first wife, Elvira an absolute minx, with one thing on her mind, to have her husband join her in death. Blithe Spirit was not Cowards first collaboration with the occult, his mother attended a show for

‘The medium apparently yelled ‘Your son has great talent and a wonderful career ahead! “ much like Blithe Spirits psychic, Madame Arcati, she then collapsed on the stage and had to be hauled off. Many themes from the early psychics of the period are echoed in Coward’s piece, dead children being used as control mechanisms to communicate with ‘the other side’ for example. Director Nettie Sheridan said, “I am absolutely thrilled to be able to present Blithe Spirit for Southwick Players -returning almost 2 years after The Elephant Man- the last play I directed and presented at The Barn Theatre in March 2020, just days before the first pandemic lockdown. Blithe Spirit is a superb piece of comedy writing offering great challenge for actors. I have assembled a fantastic creative team and an outstanding cast for this production - as follows: Charles Condomine - Phil Nair Brown Ruth Condomine - Lou Yeo Madame Arcati - Sam Nixon Elvira - Hannah Whitty George Bradman-Tim Ingram Violet Bradman- Zoe Edden Edith - Amy Whittington The play and the recent film both have many references to the local surrounding counties and towns (including film locations), in particular Kent and East Sussex’.

The Railway comes to Shoreham. cont’d other towns. In 1861 London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company completed the construction of branch line linking Shoreham to Horsham with stations built at Steyning and Bramber. Back in 1840, a train station at Kingston was built to handle the flow of people using the very popular Shoreham (England) to Dieppe (France) steamship ferry. This departed from the harbour arm at Kingston, with the London and Brighton Railway Company advertising the connection. However when the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company took over the steamship connection in 1847 it could not agree on terms and conditions with the harbour authorities. Shoreham lost its cross-channel ferry when it was transferred to Newhaven. Kingston lost its appeal to tourists and the railway station there closed in 1863. Coal for the steam trains continued

to be landed at the harbour though and the coal trucks were pulled uphill into the rail sidings by a locomotive. Various factories were established near the railway adding to the unattractive coastal industrial sprawl. A jam factory was built in 1922 and the aroma lingered along the line. Horses were used for the shunting of box carriages of freight trains carrying Shoreham’s produce from its market gardens and brewery plus landed fish from the harbour. The line to Horsham via Steyning was closed in 1966, with the section between Shoreham and the cement works at Upper Beeding continuing as a single track into the 1970s as a freight only line. Richard Durrant’s Candlelit Christmas Show The guitarist and composer Richard Durrant heralds the start of another Christmas season with his family friendly Candlelit Christmas Concerts. With Christmas songs and wintry folk music, traditional carols and solo guitar music this will be a seasonal, musical feast and Richard’s first live tour for nearly two years. Richard will be joined onstage by his sons Django and Felix, legendary musician Brian Gulland and much loved Christmas regular the singer Amy Kakoura. Amy and Richard have been exploring midwinter together for nearly a decade, sharing their deep love of the season’s music (and a robust defiance of genre). Amy’s Greek/ Irish roots seem to evoke medieval chant, folk & soulful jazz lending a unique depth to this collaboration. Just this month Amy was a featured artist on BBC Radio 3’s Words and Music and recently composed music for this year’s Coventry City of Culture opening ceremony. And now the one and only Brian Gulland has joined the tour! Once a Canterbury Chorister, Brian is a multi instrumentalist and composer who has performed with London Pro Musica, Musica Reservata, the New Scorpion Band and Malicorne. Most notably Brian is a founder member of legendary mediaeval prog rock band Gryphon, in fact the Candlelit Christmas tour comes hot on the heels of a string of Gryphon dates. Brian and Richard have become close musical friends with a shared love of early music and all things acoustic. Richard’s oldest son Django Durrant first joined the Christmas tour in 2019 on drums and percussion. This year he’ll also be taking on vocal duties and he has contributed a new song to the set list for the first time. On his

first professional tour Djangos’ brother Felix will play bass guitar and keyboards. Already a fine pianist Felix also composes, writes his own songs and plays guitar in various open tunings. Says Richard: “The magic and intensity of playing music at this time of year can be as joyful as Christmas itself. As our planet careers towards another winter solstice my merry band picks up the story!”. 2 December: Toll Gavel United Church Beverley 3 December: Lancaster Royal Grammar School East Road Lancaster 5 December: Ropetackle Arts Centre Shoreham-by-Sea 11 December: Ropetackle Arts Centre Little High StreetShoreham-by-Sea 15 December: Trinity Theatre Church Royal Tunbridge Wells 20 December: Theatre Clwyd Anthony Hopkins Theatre Mold, Flintshire 21 December: St Mary & St Peter’s Church Wilmington,

Reducing Carbon Footprint A study by clinicians at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust found that if patients on one respiratory ward changed the inhaler they were using their collective carbon footprint could reduce by about 90% in one year - the equivalent of driving around the world three times. Across the NHS these small inhalers, such as those used by people with asthma and other respiratory conditions, contribute a disproportionate amount to the NHS carbon footprint – between 3 and 4%. In October last year, the NHS committed to deliver the world’s first Net Zero Carbon health service, responding to climate change and improving health now and for future generations. The NHS Long Term Plan set targets to deliver on these ambitions and by moving to lower carbon inhalers, such as dry powder inhalers (DPIs), significant gains can be made. In the week that COP26 begins in Glasgow, the most important climate change event of our lives, UHSussex, revealed the success of their own inhaler change project. Certain inhalers contain a potent greenhouse gas as a propellant, to administer the medicine into the patient’s lungs. These types of inhalers are known as MDIs, or metered dose inhalers. While the gas itself is not harmful to inhaler users, the emissions from exhalation and in disposal of the devices, has a powerful carbon footprint effect. There are, however, alternatives to MDIs, such as DPIs, which are dry powder inhalers. Respiratory experts at UHSussex set out to see what the difference could be if patients used the DPI inhaler instead of the MDI – which currently account for about 70% of all inhalers in the UK. Dr Bethan Davies, medicine chief registrar worked with Dr James Myerson, Respiratory Consultant at UHSussex, and said: “All NHS trusts have to reduce their carbon footprint under the Greener NHS programme and we wanted to see how we could make a difference with the patients we see – how we could reduce our

medicinal carbon footprint. These alternative devices can reduce the carbon footprint of inhalers by up to 95%. “Over a year we measured the volume of inhalers prescribed to 169 patients on discharge from Pyecombe respiratory ward at the Princess Royal Hospital in Hayward’s Heath. “We found 63% were MDIs; if these were switched to DPIs, the carbon footprint of inhaler use in this group of patients could be reduced from nearly 24,000kg of CO2e to less than 3,000kg over a year. That’s about a 90% reduction. That’s a massive amount. “Incredibly, that’s the equivalent of driving around the world three times, which vividly demonstrates how small changes really can make a huge difference.” The team’s findings have been presented to a respiratory governance meeting, as well as to the national Sustainable Healthcare Academic Research Enterprise (SHARE) conference. The respiratory team has also presented their findings to other NHS trusts. An inhaler working group is being set up and a medicine clinical fellow appointed to work on reducing MDI prescribing across UHSussex. Dr Davies added: “Reducing the carbon impact of inhalers is one of the top priorities of the Greener NHS programme - and we need to get the use of MDIs down. I am proud and excited that UHSussex is at the forefront of this.”
