Freemasons to raise funds for charities supported by Prince Philip To honour Prince Philip, who passed away, the Freemasons have launched a campaign inviting their 200,000 members to raise funds for charities that the Prince dedicated his life to.. His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was himself a Freemason, having been introduced to Freemasonry in 1952 at the age of 31 by his Father in Law King George VI. Throughout his 99 years, he was associated with some 992 charities, either as president, patron or as an honorary member.
The Prince supported charitable organisations in the fields of scientific and technological research and development, the encouragement of sport, the welfare of young people, conservation and the environment. Dr David Staples, chief executive of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), said: “Prince Philip was well known for his charity work, having been involved with numerous organisations. He was devoted to philanthropy and therefore the best way to celebrate his life is by supporting the charities that the Prince himself supported.
“For us, this was an easy decision as Freemasonry’s core values are charity, integrity, respect and friendship. The Freemasons have been quietly getting on with making society and the lives of those less fortunate better for more than three centuries,” said Dr Staples. Freemasons worked some 18.5 million hours each year as volunteers in a range of different areas, including driving vulnerable people to hospital, preparing meals, taking care of people at risk, organising care packages, and producing scrubs, personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand sanitiser. Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
They also donated more than £1m last year to the Covid effort, with the funds being used to help communities in various critical areas, including foodbanks, support for unpaid carers, PPE, supplies for hospitals and hospices, support for women’s refuges, and funds for NHS workers, ambulances and equipment. As a Freemason, the Duke of Edinburgh was initiated into Navy Lodge, No 2612, on 5 December. On 6 March 1953, HRH Prince Philip progressed to the Second Degree of Freemasonry, before advancing to the Third Degree on 4 May 1953. The UGLE issued his Grand Lodge Certificate on 7 May that same year and he remained a member up until his death. The Duke of Edinburgh was born in Corfu on 10 June 1921, the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He therefore also held the title Prince of Greece and Denmark.
Freemasons can also count other members of the Royal Family among their number, including HRH the Duke of Kent, who is the longest-serving Grand Master of the UGLE.
7 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR MORTGAGE. 4. What is the interest rate?: Interest rates are currently low but there is still competition within the market, so shopping around for the best deal could save you thousands of pounds. 5. Ropetackle and Alfonso the Magnificent are ready to restart the party on Thursday 20th May 2021 For those who have been missing the buzz and excitement of live music, the wait is almost over! Ropetackle is delighted to announce it will be reopening its doors on 17th May, with Alfonso The Magnificent kicking off the summer shows for a live audience Thursday 20th May at 7.30pm (doors open at 7). This promises to be an evening of magnificent music and joy; a real shot in the arm and a boost to the system…which is just what the doctor ordered. Alfonso the Magnificent formed in Shoreham by Sea in 2019 and comprises Leo Gibbs (guitar/vocal), Mervyn Wallis (violin), Nathan Marshall (drums/percussion) and Dave Warner (accordion/piano). This will be their fourth appearance at Ropetackle; most recently they performed a live web streamed gig to a world-wide audience from New Zealand, France, Germany, the USA and even as far afield as Goring!
Alfonso the Magnificent is an innovative and exciting group, mixing traditional genres of Jazz, Gypsy Jazz, Latin, Classical and Modern Folk to create a unique sound of their own. Performing original songs, from melancholic ballads to toe-tapping upbeat dance tunes, they are a great live act and gaining new fans all the time. Despite the severe restrictions caused by Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
lockdown, the band have continued writing and rehearsing via Zoom – however they can’t wait to play live at their favourite venue. “Ropetackle is a fantastic music venue,” the band said. “The sound is incredible, the staff (including volunteers) are wonderful and work tirelessly behind the scenes, and the audiences are quite simply magnificent. Ropetackle has full Covid-safe measures in place and plenty of experience delivering safe events, having reopened last year from August through to December (excepting the November lockdown.) “It’s been a challenging time for all venues, but we are more than ready to go again,” said Nicky Thornton, Marketing Manager. “We have a great summer programme lined up, with children’s shows, films, great music, comedy and talks. We look forward to welcoming everyone back with some brilliant live entertainment and will continue to make public safety our priority.”

Southwick Football Ground to get a £50,000 spruce up A total of £50,000 is set to be spent bringing Southwick FC’s football ground up to scratch as new leaseholders get ready to take over the facility.
After recently taking back the lease on the site in Old Barn Way, Adur District Council has identified several major building defects and has earmarked the money for immediate repairs.
The money will be spent on roof repairs, floodlight upgrades and rebuilding boundary walls. The Council wants to act so that the new tenants can move in and begin work offering community football schemes as soon as possible. Last month the Council announced that football was set to return to the ground after agreeing a deal with a former Premier League footballer’s charity to take over the facilities in Old Barn Way.
Due to significant mismanagement issues and safety concerns, the Council ended the agreement with the former leaseholder at Southwick FC last year. A new 25-year lease has been agreed with the Russell Martin Foundation (RMF), a Southwick-based not-for-profit organisation which uses the power of football to help change people’s lives.
The charity, which is backed by the former Norwich City and Rangers player, has plans to work with the council to refurbish the entire site, transforming it into a community football hub, which promotes health, wellbeing and education in the area. RMF has also agreed to offer the newly reformed Southwick Football Club (1882) the chance to use the ground for their home fixtures, meeting the ambition to return affiliated football to Old Barn Way. Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
Photo: Southwick football ground in Old Barn Way Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: ‘I am pleased that we are able to spend this sum on immediate repairs. We have always taken the view that this ground is an important community resource in Southwick and now that we have taken action and have RMF on board I am sure we can continue to work together to bring the facilities up to scratch for footballers of all ages to enjoy.’
The money for the repairs comes from sums that Brighton and Hove Albion FC contributed to the Council when the club’s training facilities at Lancing were given the go-ahead in 2013. Under government regulations developers have to make a financial contribution to compensate for the loss of an open space. Thus far the £1.35 million contribution from the Seagulls has, among others projects, funded 3G football pitches at Sir Robert Robert Woodard Academy, changing rooms at Croshaw Recreation ground changing rooms, improvements at Wadurs and a skateboard park in Lancing.

Community Works is a Charity Connecting community organisations, people and businesses to build a better community for everyone. Every year, our Volunteer Centre helps hundreds of local people find a rewarding volunteer role.
Welcome to Inside Volunteering where we hope to inspire you to volunteer a little bit of your time and talent to help our local community. With spring now well underway, there are more opportunities to volunteer outdoors.
This month we’re talking about the many ways you can volunteer at Highdown Gardens as it reopens to the public after a year of exciting new development work. Getting your hands dirty Highdown are looking for people to join the Friends of Highdown Garden volunteer group. You’ll work alongside Highdown’s craft gardeners to take care of the plants. You’ll also learn about the garden’s history and gain new practical skills. It’s a chance to be part of a committed team giving back to the community.
Sue, who’s been a volunteer with the Friends of Highdown Gardens for seven years, enjoys doing something that feels worthwhile. “I’ve helped with weeding, pruning, planting, leaf raking and watering… I’ve learnt more about gardening and feel proud to help keep Highdown looking good.” Planting for the future There are also new volunteer opportunities following a National Lottery funded redevelopment project. The project’s aim is to help preserve and catalogue the garden’s rare plant species as well as improve the gardens for visitors. So far Highdown have built a new visitor centre and greenhouse, improved accessibility and created a new sensory garden. Now they’re looking for help in delivering the second stage of the project. Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
Growing Highdown’s legacy They need volunteers to help the plant heritage officer collect and document the garden’s unique plant species. And with large crowds expected, they’re looking for volunteers to greet visitors and take them on guided tours to explain the garden’s collection and history. They also need help with the special events that take place throughout the year. Ellen Mascard, Highdown’s volunteer and engagement officer, told us more about how you can help. She said, “You don’t need any gardening experience – just enthusiasm and dedication, though for some of our new roles such as delivering guided tours we will require certain skills and experience. It’s a great opportunity to develop and gain skills and give back to the community, preserving Highdown Gardens for future generations. Without the volunteers, Highdown Gardens wouldn’t be as successful as it is – they’re essential for the future of the gardens.” Check out the current volunteer roles available at Highdown Gardens as well as other outdoor volunteering opportunities Role

The General Elections of 1826 and 1830 The 16th of June 1826 was the day of the General Election. Standing for the two parliamentary seats of Bramber and Shoreham were Sir Charles Merrik Burrell, Bart Henry Howard, Esq., of Aldingbourne and Edward Burtenshaw Burrell’s seat was considered safe, but a bitter contest occurred between Howard, a Whig party member whose uncle was the Duke of Norfolk and Sugden, a Tory. Sugden was a barrister who resided at Slaugham in Bramber, but was ridiculed by some as a parvenu (a newly powerful person or someone seen as a wealthy upstart.) Sugden retaliated that Howard didn’t live in the combined Bramber and Shoreham constituency and was the Duke’s man, having previously held the borough of Steyning. The newspaper the Brighton Gazette warned that if Howard was elected ‘Bramber will thenceforth be as close a borough as Steyning or Horsham’. The Times newspaper reported on a letter obtained by Howard and published that revealed some of Sudgen’s controversial opinions, which had been expressed to a third party. The Times challenged Sugden’s ‘base and sordid hypocrisy’ concerning his views. The scandal damaged his campaign, but he was still able to excite the electorate with his passionate speeches about his ‘humble’ origins, compared to the privileged upbringing of Howard. The election result was Burrell had 865 votes, Howard 645 and Sugden 483. Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021

Although bribery had supposedly been abolished, it still flourished by indirect means. £6,000 had been spent. £707 found its way to the “Fountain Inn,” and in addition, an item of £44, 18s. l Id. was recorded as “previous to election “ and £32, 10s. as for the “waiters and ostlers of the `Fountain.’ “The “Royal George” netted £384, the “ King’s Head “ £215, and “The Schooner” - £120. There was also an item of £65 “for hire of hand.” The list of bills incurred at Worthing for this Shoreham election totalled over £1,000. The cost for legal counsel, agents, and hustings came to £2,800. This outpouring of money is referred to in a letter dated December 8th, 1826, requesting payment of £139 “for wines supplied during the Election.” The writer of the letter says “ as the period for petitioning has expired, I presume it will not be long cont/d page 38

The aim is to give local businesses a boost as the UK follows the national Roadmap out of lockdown. As with previous COVID grants, the Councils have worked hard to make the process as easy as possible for local businesses through an online portal. To apply for the funding visit www. adur-worthing.gov.uk/coronavirus/business-support and click on Restart grants.
The funding is simple to apply for and will be based on the rateable value of a business property as of 1st April 2021. It will be distributed as a one-off payment.
The main services or activities provided by the local businesses eligible must take place in a fixed, rate-paying premise. Non-essential retail businesses can receive up to £6,000, while those in the leisure, hospitality, accommodation, personal care and gym industries can receive up to £18,000 based on the rateable value. A spokesperson for the Councils said: “We strongly urge businesses to apply for this Restart grant so they can reopen safely after what has been a very challenging period for all. Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
“We know how valuable these funds will be to local traders which is why we have taken steps to make the registration process as easy as possible. “Our teams are ready to process applications quickly so we can bolster our local economy and help companies recover with the support they deserve.”
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, 30th June 2021. To find out if you are eligible for a Restart Grant and to register, see: The funding is in addition to a range of support available to organisations impacted by COVID. A separate discretionary scheme - known as the Additional Restrictions Grant remains available for businesses that are struggling, are not covered by other grant schemes, or where additional funding is needed. Funds distributed through both schemes do not have to be paid back. If you have any questions, email:

May is National Walking Month! We are all too familiar with the walks available to us given this past year, and I’m sure like us you’ve been trying to find new places to wander for a bit of variety. But walking is good for our minds, bodies and our local communities and has been a lifeline recently, helping people stay active and connected. Textures and Light Texture alone can make an attractive, sometimes abstract, pattern picture. The best way to approach this is to ensure you have side lighting to really enhance the texture by throwing shadows which give shape and apparent 3D to a 2D photograph.
This technique really applies to all photographs which seen as prints or viewed on a screen only have height and width so the introduction of directional light gives pictures shape and form, so giving the impression of depth. This depth can be on a large scale or on a small scale such as wood grain or a rusted metal surface.
Move in close and be careful not to include your own shadow - unless of course, you choose to do so for creative purposes ! To capture texture it is vital that the image is sharp. If the subject is small and you’re in close, ensure your camera can focus that closely, then perhaps you can brace your camera hand against the surface you are photographing to steady it as you make the exposure. Of course, shadow not only brings out the texture, it gives contrast to an image, light and shade which usually makes for increased visual interest. I must emphasise that good quality

photographs can be taken on smartphones as well as top of the range cameras, so most people now have a camera in their pocket or bag wherever they go so no excuse for not capturing fleeting moments of art. Traders’ joy as Shoreham Artisans’ Market returns
Local traders have expressed their joy and excitement that for the very first time this year Shoreham Artisans’ Market took place on Saturday (24th April 2021). Around 40 stalls will entice customers offering unique and lovingly-made products at the Adur Markets-run event, the first since October last year, following the easing of national lockdown restrictions.
Among the arts and crafts will be recycled and upcycled pieces, candles, soaps, flowers and plants, as well as some artisanal food and drink - with breads, cakes, pickles, wines and beers on offer. From now traders will be returning on the fourth Saturday of every month at Tarmount Lane Car Park.
Adur District Council is running the markets in line with Government guidelines around Coronavirus, which means non-essential retail businesses can now sell their goods in stores and on stalls. Restrictions are in place to ensure social distancing, and the safety of the public, staff and traders. Caroline Pettett owns Caroline Crafts, and has been running a stall at Adur Markets since 2017, selling unique, handmade products. She said: “I’m really looking forward to coming back. It’s going to be so nice to be out on the stall again, talking to customers, being around the other stallholders and seeing all of the products on offer, we’ve all missed it very much. “It’s been difficult not being able to operate for so long, because I do rely on being able to run a stall, but I’m lucky that I work Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
Photo: Caroline Pettett of Caroline Crafts sells handmade items part time as well. “I am involved with a few other markets, but the Shoreham Artisans’ Market is the one I sell at the most and it’s an amazing market. I love the community in Shoreham and it’s great to actually see customers “face-to-face”. As the Government ruled open-air food and drink stalls could continue to trade, the Shoreham Farmers’ Market has been operating safely since last year and takes place on every second Saturday of the month. Nigel Dewey, who manages Adur Markets on behalf of the Council, said: “We are extremely delighted to welcome the return of the Shoreham Artisans’ Market, after what has been an incredibly difficult period of uncertainty for all of our traders. “While some sell their products online, many rely solely on physical trade, and have been unable to operate at all.

Hidden and Hunted Homelessness photography exhibition opens in Worthing An exhibition of evocative images taken by a group of women affected by homelessness opened in Worthing on Tuesday 30th March 2021. The exhibition is the result of several month’s partnership working from Turning Tides, Safe in Sussex and Brighton Women’s Centre. The project is part of a wider initiative to raise the profile of the challenges faced by women experiencing homelessness funded by Homeless Link.
Janie Pamment, Women’s Support Navigator (Turning Tides), Sam Otway, Women’s Support Worker (Safe in Sussex) and Jana Riley, Women’s Accommodation Support Worker (Brighton Women’s Centre) were instrumental in coordinating and running numerous women’s groups across West Sussex for those that had experienced homelessness. Through sharing their stories in a safe and supportive environment group members used photographs to highlight the complicated struggle they have faced as women experiencing homelessness. Together, with a local professional photographer, Samantha Pharoah, a series of evocative images have been shared via public display at various locations. Samantha commented; “It has been quite staggering to hear about the life events that these women have had to bear. I hope this exhibition will help these real lives to be seen and not ignored”.

our partners, is fundamental to delivering services which respond to the needs of women who have often experienced great trauma in their lives. Importantly the women themselves have felt empowered by the project, as one attested; ‘Taking photos about my journey has helped me to think about it and be proud of myself.’
Sharing these poignant photos and expressions with the wider public is fundamental to imparting what it has been like for women experiencing homelessness where we live. As one stark statement emphasises, ‘If

The pictures and life stories created by the women are on display in the seafront shelter on the promenade opposite West Buildings in Worthing up until the end of June. The exhibition is also being displayed at Littlehampton’s East Beach Cafe until 15th May. Other venues across the county are soon to be confirmed.

We’re Back
The Lions were delighted to be back at the Shoreham Artisans’ Market on Saturday 24th April. The Council had organised a wellorganised, safe experience for everyone and the Lions were able to raise over £220 for Brain Tumour Research, a project being supported by all the clubs in the South-East of England. If you would like to donate to this project but were not able to attend the market then please visit https:// www.braintumourresearch.org/donation to donate online. A card-reader is now available at Lions’ events so don’t worry if you have no cash as you can now make donations by this route as well. Two more pairs of hands are now available to help out at any fundraising or service events the Lions hold. Welcome to Julian and Sue Becher! Julian and Sue have been active Friends of Lions during the past year and the club was delighted that they decided they would like to become full members. You will know by now that the Lions’ motto is ‘We serve’ which is exactly what three Lions did recently by helping the MS Centre spread chippings on their flower beds. Bird Watching in St Mary’s Churchyard
A couple of years ago, Shoreham District Ornithological Society (SDOS) installed a number of nest boxes in the churchyard. And last year both Blue Tits and Great Tits were seen investigating the boxes, although we don’t know if they nested successfully.
In the early part of this year it became apparent that some of the boxes needed some repairs, so SDOS stepped forward and got to work. One box, found at the bottom of a tree and without a roof, was completely rebuilt and boxes designed for House Sparrows were repositioned. Now it’s fingers crossed that the birds will move in and take up residence! The churchyard is an important place for birds, with at least 15 species being seen over the past few years. This includes nesting Sparrowhawks, Jays and Pied Wagtails. And in March this year, an exotic Ring-necked Parakeet was also seen. During periods of lockdown, the churchyard became a hub for people seeking an open air space to enjoy. Safe, peaceful, and with nature to enjoy, it was the perfect antidote to the troubles of the world. So next time you are walking through this lovely, historic, churchyard, stop for a moment: watch and listen for the birds and appreciate all that’s being offered for free.

Pop-up traders to bring sizzling summer delights to Adur and Worthing Beachside saunas and wood fired pizzerias are among the wide-range of pop-up traders getting set up for a busy summer in Adur and Worthing and bringing a vibrant mix of refreshment, leisure, arts and crafts traders to the towns and seafront. Last year, Adur & Worthing Councils extended its seasonal programme into the winter months to support local start up and existing businesses to operate safely during the COVID pandemic. Having enjoyed a successful season, many of the refreshment traders will be staying on.
The existing traders will be joined by a number of returning seasonal operators, including the Shellfish Shack and the eponymous Worthing Gin on Worthing seafront, as well as several new pop-up traders.
This includes two wood-fired saunas, which will be providing a beachside experience in converted horse boxes, at locations in Shoreham and Worthing. New food sellers include the Marrakech Beach Club which will be serving Morrocan street food by the river at Coronation Green in Shoreham and the BBQ Box, which will be serving hot food at Windsor Lawns in Worthing, alongside an existing coffee vendor and a new ice-cream seller.
As development work gets underway at Brooklands Park this summer, two pop-up traders will be on hand to serve refreshments to visitors to the popular lake and open space. Pop-up kite-surfing schools will once again be operating on the seafront near Brooklands and by the Waterwise playground at the Goring end of Worthing promenade. Inside Shoreham & Southwick May 2021
In line with its commitment to be Carbon Neutral by 2030 and following the recommendations of the Adur & Worthing Climate Assembly in 2020, the Councils have this year prioritised awarding pitches to traders with evidence of good sustainability and waste management practices. The includes the use of biodegradable take-away food and drink containers and the use of minimal packaging materials. A spokesperson for Adur & Worthing Councils said: “As we move out of lockdown and prepare to welcome visitors and holidaymakers back, we’re delighted to be able to support businesses through our seasonal concessions programme to bounce back from the challenges of the last year. “We’ve been really encouraged that so many traders have been able to commit to eco-friendly practices and help us, in Adur and Worthing, to tackle climate change.”

The Reverend Zacharias Henry Biddulph then stopped the practice of holding elections in the church of St. Mary De Haura in New Shoreham. He was said to have been disgusted with the skulduggery that surrounded them and sullied the blessed nature of the church. A stand was erected for elections in East Street near to the churchyard and later in the High Street. In the 1830 election, The Sale of Beer bill was an issue that concerned voters, with both Howard and Burrell campaigning for a repeal of Malt Duty. Such was the shoddy workmanship of the stand and the merriment of constituents plied with beer, that when they tugged on the ropes, the stand collapsed. The returning officer, the ‘gentlemen’ candidates and the voters all ended up in embarrassing pile of tangled
