Dinkie Flowers Just weeks away from celebrating her 100th Birthday on 7th May 2021, Dinkie Flowers (stage name Dinkie Stapleton) now wants to give something back to the NHS for the great work they have done during the current pandemic. From the age of three Dinkie has been dancing. Becoming an international ice skater she appeared in such shows as “Puss in Boots” on Ice in 1952, in 1954 she toured with the Tom Arnold “Ice Revue” and danced for the Royal Family in the “Celebrity Ice Gala” at the Queens Ice Club in 1952, which brought a letter of thanks from the Duke of Edinburgh. Setting up the Dinkie Flowers Stage School for Children, she has taught dance for over 50 years. Staging charity shows at the Shoreham Community Centre and local rest homes, she has injected sunshine into many people’s lives.
At just 98 years young Dinkie made her TV debut tap dancing her way through the auditions to appear on The Greatest Dancer, a British dance competition television series which won her the hearts of the British public. Never gracefully accepting her advancing years, even well into her nineties, until the current lockdown curtailed it Dinkie has been teaching dance and keep fit classes. From now until her 100th birthday, to raise money for the “NHS Charities Together”, for 6 days each week Dinkie will be doing 45 minutes keep fit on one day and a 20 minute walk on the other days. 43% OF SAVERS AND INVESTORS DON’T KNOW WHERE TO FIND ADVICE. More than 4 in 10 people don’t know where to seek Surveys show that financial planning can improve financial advice and it could mean they’re missing overall wellbeing. A report from Aegon shows that clients who take financial advice are more likely to: out on opportunities. What we know is that financial advice can change lives and help people achieve their goals. Yet recent research found that more than 2 in 5 people don’t know how to access advice. This could mean that they are missing out on opportunities, or taking too much risk, or worrying about their circumstances without support. In our experience, people considering financial advice will often speak to family, friends, or colleagues first. Referrals play an important role in ensuring financial advice is accessible. A quarter of people could be missing out on pension boosts. 1 in 4 surveyed said they’d not started saving for retirement yet. Worryingly, among these 2 out of 5 said they won’t even start until they are aged 55 or older. Starting early is the key in saving for retirement. As you invest contributions, compounding means money can grow at a quicker rate over the years.
• Enjoy life, because of the way they are managing money - 34% compared to those who don’t see a financial adviser (25%) • To agree they are doing everything to secure their financial future - 49% compared to just 37% of those who haven’t seen a financial adviser. While financial returns are focused on when discussing advice, it’s the benefits it can bring to lifestyles that are typically of greater value to clients. There’s a financial benefit too. Research by Royal London found, on average, those who received professional financial advice between 2001 and 2006 resulted in a total boost to wealth of £47,706 in 2014/16. Despite technology making it easier than ever to search for businesses, some people are concerned about starting their financial advice journey online. SINGING FOR PLEASURE www.singingforpleasure.com
SINGING THROUGH COVID! “Singing for Pleasure” has been running successfully in Brighton and Hove for over eight years under the direction of a very experienced musical director, Simon Gray, who has been involved in the musical theatre scene as well as many other musical assignments, concerts, operas, and top shows for over 40 years. Every week there is the opportunity to get together and sing songs from the shows as well as standards from other genres. Over the years we have built up a repertoire of over 400 songs. Singing is now widely recognised as producing a whole host of health benefits and it could be argued that singing should more broadly be part of everyday life. Singing, through the emotional experience of one’s feelings, has the power to alter and enhance the mood of the singer. Since ancient times singing has been considered a great healing tool as it can influence brain wave frequencies and promote well being. It can lower blood pressure as well as boost the immune system and, of course, no-one can argue with how singing with others promotes communal bonding. Singing and relaxation is now being advertised in GP surgeries throughout Brighton and Hove. So, all in all there are many compelling reasons to loosen up the vocal cords and get singing! “Singing for Pleasure” have successfully created a harmonious environment to sing, relax and make new friends and there is no upper age limit. In March 2020, when suddenly the world changed, Singing for Pleasure had to stop, along with all other choirs, theatre, orchestras, bands etc. Gradually the arts and entertainment world has started to Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
adapt to the situation and a lot of performing has gone on-line until such time when it can return to the theatres and halls. Singing for Pleasure is pleased to announce that it too has “gone on-line” and the weekly meetings have started up again. All you need is a personal computer, or a lap-top or an iPad/ tablet and you can join us every Thursday afternoon for an uplifting hour of singing. “Singing for Pleasure” has also held fund raising events in support of local charities. Indeed, the group is happy to assist all charities by singing free of charge at suitable events in the future once things get started again. Please phone 01273 555089 for more information. SFP have supported events raising funds for the Argus Appeal, The Martlets Hospice and Chestnut Tree House. Why not come along for a free taster session? Please phone Robert or Corinne Blass on 01273 555089 to register your interest. Community Works is a Charity Connecting community organizations, people and businesses to build a better community for everyone. Every year, our Volunteer Centre helps hundreds of local people find a rewarding volunteer role.
Thank you! Hello and welcome back to Inside Volunteering. Firstly, thanks a million to everyone who got in touch to offer their help and to all of you volunteering your time and talents to help our community through difficult times So many people are getting involved, in so many different ways. Your kindness and generosity make all the difference.
I’m Carole Claridge, the Volunteering Adviser for Worthing & Adur and a volunteer myself. If you’d like to know more about volunteering in your local community, get in touch. I’d love to help you get started. Gig Buddies wants you to come and share your skills!
This month we would like to share with you some short stories from a fun organisation that is looking for new volunteers! Gig Buddies is run by Sussex based charity Stay Up Late. They started off by pairing people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism with a volunteer so they could go to gigs together. They have provided a great sense of community to those people who have volunteered and found buddies through the service. In February, the organisation launched a new recruitment drive to be able to mobilise volunteers when we are able to socialise again and to expand this buddying to interests beyond gigs. If you have hobbies or pastimes you want to Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
share with other people, this could be the volunteer role for you.
As a new volunteer you will be supported and trained so that you can really enjoy your volunteering experience. Their support workers make sure that everyone is happy and confident with their participation and that volunteers and buddies are suitably matched. Meet some buddies and volunteers :) Chris and Jo Chris: “I’m a young man who has mild autism and learning disabilities. I often felt socially isolated and wanted to get out more and meet new people. “Music was my main interest, so Gig Buddies matched me with Jo, a volunteer, to go to mainstream concerts together as friends. “Gig Buddies has made me a stronger and more confident person. Before meeting Jo, I couldn’t be around so many people, but she’s always encouraging me to get out there. I’ve even got to know Jo’s friends and now I’m comfortable talking to them.” Stacey and Sarah Stacey is a young woman in her 20s. She was referred to the project by her social worker, after breaking up with her girlfriend and feeling quite down. She said that she would like to be matched to a gay woman who could be a mentor for her. Stacey was matched to Sarah, who helps her to attend Gig Buddies socials and feel more comfortable and part of the gay scene in Brighton. They have future cont/d page 14
14 plans to help Stay Up Late be involved in Gay Pride. Stacey is making friends with several people who are part of Gig Buddies and is keen to go out again once lockdown restrictions have lifted. Mark and Clara Mark initially attended two Gig Buddies social events: a cinema trip along with his mum whilst he built confidence, and then bowling without her. In August 2019, Gig Buddies matched him to Clara. At the start, Clara was driving out to collect him, but by October he was getting the bus into town on his own to meet her. They started off meeting in the daytime mainly for meals, as although Mark was open to trying lots of new things, he was not keen on evenings at first. By November, Mark was up for going out in the evening. They’ve now done a variety of things together including a ghost walk, seeing comedy at Komedia, visiting the Upside Down House, and watching ‘Circus of Horrors’ at The Dome. Calvin and Ann Calvin: “Three and a half years ago I became a Gig Buddy and got matched up with my volunteer Ann. We were matched as people who lived close together and shared a passion for music. “I rarely socialised with people outside my family before I found Gig Buddies. Gig Buddies has allowed us to experience so many great things. We’ve seen Gregory Porter and Kylie and also got involved at a local festival as stewards. We are keeping connected through lockdown with regular calls and watching films and then being film critics!” Interested? Get in touch via Community Works

J.H. THOMAS James Henry Thomas was born on the 3rd of October 1874 in Newport, Monmouthshire. His working life started when at twelve years old, he became the delivery boy for a local chemists. At fifteen he took a job as a locomotive engine cleaner with the aim of continuing to support his grandmother who had raised him. James joined the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, as with this type of job you had to be a member of a trade union. In 1910 he was elected to the House of Commons as the Labour MP for Derby. Then in 1913 he merged the railway unions together to form the National Union of Railwaymen. In 1916 he was elected to be its general secretary and helped organise the 1919 National Rail Strike to successfully prevent the cutting of wages. However, during the Black Friday Crisis of 1921, James Thomas, despite his efforts, could not get the union to strike in support of the miners who faced a cut to their own wages. In 1924 the Labour party won the General Election. Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald made James Thomas, Secretary of State for the Colonies in his short-lived government. In 1926, the Trade Union Congress appointed James Thomas as one of the negotiators to meet with the Stanley Baldwin’s Conservative Government over a dispute between miners and colliery owners. The miners were threatened by a cut in hours and pay. The talks failed, resulting in the General Strike, where huge numbers of other workers from other industries joined the
miners in a show of solidarity. Labour won the General Election of 1929 and Ramsay MacDonald appointed James Thomas, Lord Privy Seal. Then in a 1930 cabinet reshuffle James was appointed Secretary of State for the Dominions. To end the years of political crisis and spate of elections, Ramsay MacDonald created a national government of unity in 1931. James Thomas joined it, taking on the additional role of Secretary of State for the Colonies. He was promptly expelled from the Labour Party and the National Union of Railwaymen. James Thomas had the unenviable task of trying to solve mass unemployment, not just countrywide but globally across the Commonwealth during the Great Economic Depression. In 1933, James Thomas and three companions were in a motorboat that broke down off Shoreham-By-Sea, which began to be swept further out in the English Channel. James Thomas however was not panicked. He tied his handkerchief to an oar and waved it in the air to signal the cont/d page 16
Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
16 boat was in distress. A keen-eyed observer in Shoreham’s coastguard tower spotted them and the lifeboat was launched to the rescue. In 1936 James Thomas resigned from the Government. He’d been on the golf course and shouted “Tee Up” which was mistaken as a coded signal by the stockbrokers who were in earshot, that there would be a rise in the duty paid on tea in the coming budget. Despite this unfortunate end to his political career, James Thomas had been much admired for his ability to unite people from all walks of life. Many of you will walk past the tower at the mouth of the harbour when you are heading off for a lockdown walk along the beach or as you head home from one. In fact it is the Shoreham National Coastwatch Institute station. We are a purely voluntary organization that was formed in Cornwall 27 years ago to provide “eyes and ears” along the coast. Shoreham Farmers’ Market continues to run in line with Government Coronavirus guidelines Tasty food and drink produce is available to buy from the COVID-safe Shoreham Farmers’ Market next Saturday - as Adur Markets continue to operate safely and in line with Government guidelines around Coronavirus. Adur District Council is ensuring markets run with restrictions in place for social distancing and the safety of the public, staff and traders - while providing the local traders with a financial lifeline and a chance to sell their produce. They have been operating safely since July last year, when the Government ruled open air food stalls could continue to trade. Guidelines show businesses, including food retailers, are permitted to operate from market stalls. The markets are being managed by stewards who are monitoring attendance, ensuring all visitors have enough space to social distance. They continue to be delivered at Tarmount Lane car park - a large, open-air outdoor space, which allows for better social distancing measures. Councillor Emma Evans, Adur’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: “We are continuing with the running of Adur Markets in line with Government guidelines and by taking due care and diligence to ensure the site is spaced out, attendance numbers are monitored and that there is hand sanitiser on site. “It’s important for us to offer a chance for businesses to operate where they can, Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
because as we know, many are facing such hardship during these unprecedented times. “We believe the markets can run safely and securely throughout lockdown and we are constantly reviewing the situation against local infection rates.” The move has been supported by local traders, some of whom have had other forms of income halted or dramatically reduced by the current lockdown. Keith Kempton is the director of Riverside Brewery, a firm which sells its produce at the farmers’ market. He said: “On a year-by-year basis we generate most of our income from running beer tents at various fetes, galas and functions together with cask sales to pubs. “Last year not one event took place and sales to pubs were extremely limited due to tier restrictions and lockdowns. As a result, the opportunity to sell at the market is proving to be a financial lifeline to us, and we are very grateful for this. “With the current set up in Tarmount Lane car park, where there is plenty of space between stalls and for the customers, together with the marshalling, the one-way system and hand sanitiser station provided - we feel safe and comfortable to continue selling at the market.” Charles How is the owner of Chanctonbury Organic Meats, which also sells at the market. He added: “If we don’t sell at the markets we’d be left a surplus of meat that will stay in the freezer for months and months, and our income will be severely affected if we can’t sell our produce.”

KEEP LOOKING FOR THE UNEXPECTED
Good photographers have to be observant to capture the unexpected.
Of course, by definition, we don’t know what form the unexpected will take so we need to have our wits about us and our cameras at the ready.
Occasionally a situation will unfold infront of our eyes which is moving, evolving and quickly disappearing so we have a split second to record it. Other times, as the examples here, the “unexpected” is static and we have time to choose our viewpoint, compose and shoot. Another benefit with a static subject is that if the light is poor we can simply come back and retake it at another time of day. Good light enhances a photograph. Different lighting conditions
work with different subjects as it changes mood, atmosphere, texture and detail. For instance, a landscape in bright, directional sunlight is transformed into a moody, impressionistic scene by mist and diffused sunlight. For me, that makes a more interesting image, less factual and more emotive. That’s the power of photography.
We all know that you need light to take a photograph, but with light goes shade, this is what gives a mix of tones to an image and that adds visual interest in most cases. There are two things that specifically draw the eye of the viewer. One is the greatest highlight, sometimes providing the greatest area of contrast usually in monochrome photography but not exclusively. The other, in colour photographs, is the colour red. On this page, the Geisha statue provides both of these eye catching attributes. The cont/d page 24 Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
24 White (highlight) face with the cherry red lips cannot be ignored, especially as it is framed by darker tones.
The second image, a life-size model of Marilyn Monroe in her most famous pose, is set set against a dark background but surrounded by an orange wall, a colour which would normally draw the eye, however in this case, the greatest point of contrast is the white of the model against the black of the background and therefore the eye is drawn to this focal point. The window box of flowers should act as a visual barrier but somehow the familiar face and the contrast overpowers that.
The overhead sunlight, often not favoured by traditional photographers, picks out Marilyn but doesn’t penetrate the space behind, living it in shadow thus creating that visual effect. Steve Boyle ARPS

The Scrap Space: scrapstore and community activity Adur based community arts non profit, Over the Moon, is pleased to announce its most ambitious project to date:
The Scrap Space. This will be a venue combining a scrapstore and activity space to encourage, inspire and enable creativity, sustainability and community, in Adur on the South Coast in West Sussex. The scrapstore will redistribute clean and safe waste donated by businesses and individuals for creative reuse, such as for art, craft, play and DIY, and the activity space will run creative activity sessions for all ages and skill levels and be available for hire. Individuals, groups and organisations will be able to become scrapstore members and access materials in a cheap and environmentally friendly way.
Emily Phillips, director of Over the Moon says, “We want to make The Scrap Space a welcoming community resource that is proudly part of the circular economy. We are passionate about getting people together, getting people creating and using what we already have to do so. We see repurposing whatever we can get our hands on as an enjoyable challenge and a springboard for creativity. We just think it makes sense to have this mindset so we can better look after our planet. Even better, if we can do this together in the community, it’s a great way to connect with people.” Over the Moon is currently seeking suitable Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021

BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY Shona Campbell, Acupuncturist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, focuses on ways to boost immunity. The immune system is a wonderful, complex protective system that keeps us safe. There are many ways we can boost this defence system to keep it in great shape.
Gut health Did you know that 70% of our immunity comes from our gut? This means we need good nourishment to help our gut to function. Probiotics achieve this wonderfully as they feed our gut bacteria the nutrients they need. Live fermented products are a great source of probiotics, and can be found in kefir drinks, kombucha, kimchi, Sauerkraut, live yoghurt and live apple cider vinegar. Other foods which have been shown to help boost immunity include:
Stress has been shown to have a negative effect on the immune system. Finding ways to eliminate stress is crucial in staying healthy, particularly when stress becomes chronic. Doing something creative, getting outdoors in nature, exercising at least three times a week, and meditation, have all been shown to reduce stress and make us less reactive to external triggers.
and NKT “killer” T-cells are a first line of defence against viruses and produce inflammation which, in the acute stage, has a protective function to aid healing. TH2 cells switch off these processes once the pathogen is no longer present, inflammation reduces, and the defence system is calm. Sometimes this switch-off function does not happen, such as in autoimmune conditions. Acupuncture has been shown in studies to have a regulating effect on both TH1 and TH2, building defence and helping calm it by dialling down the inflammatory response. Acupuncture does this in a targeted and nuanced way, bringing immunity into balance. A welcome effect that has been shown in studies of Acupuncture is also a reduction in stress, so Acupuncture treatments can help immunity in many ways.
Two particular aspects of the immune system need to be in balance. TH1 cells fight infection by white-blood-cell production

Football coming home to Southwick Football is set to return to Southwick with Adur District Council agreeing a deal with a former Premier League footballer’s charity to take over the facilities in Old Barn Way. Due to significant mismanagement issues and safety concerns, the Council ended the agreement with the former leaseholder at Southwick FC last year. Initial estimates suggested up to £500,000 of repairs would be required to bring it back into use. Since then, a widespread search for suitable operators has been carried out with terms for a new 25 year lease now being agreed with the Russell Ma rtin Foundation (RMF), a Southwick-based not-for-profit organisation which uses the power of football to help change people’s lives.
Photo: The Russell Martin Foundation working with young people
Executive Member for Environment, said: “This is very much a home win, a great result for everyone involved. “We are well aware of the importance that Old Barn Way plays in the wider community which is why we have taken time to ensure we found a suitable tenant who could add value to the site and offer a sustainable home for Southwick Football Club.
The charity, which is backed by the former Norwich City and Rangers player, has plans to work with the council to refurbish the entire site, transforming it into a community football hub, which promotes health, wellbeing and education in the area.
“The Russell Martin Foundation has gone from strength to strength in recent years and has a really good track record of using sport to help change people’s lives. They are locally based, committed to investing in the site and have experience in running similar facilities in a responsible and inclusive way.
RMF has also agreed to offer the newly reformed Southwick Football Club (1882) the chance to use the ground for their home fixtures, meeting the ambition to return affiliated football to Old Barn Way.
“We’re really pleased to be entering into a long-term partnership with them and confident this deal will see the reformed Southwick Football Club returning to their spiritual home.”
While there is much work to do to make the site fit and safe for use, it is hoped the ground can be ready in time for the new season starting in September. Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
With terms for a new lease agreed, RMF along with the council will begin the process of making urgent repairs to make the site safe and secure. The ambition - pending the lifting of COVID restrictions and fundraising efforts to invest cont/d page 30
30 in the site - is for academy sessions to start in August ahead of league football beginning in September.
Longer term, RMF wants to install a sustainable cork based 3G pitch which will enable the ground to be used regularly all year round regardless of the weather and seek to upgrade facilities at the site to create a modern and fit for purpose community football hub. To support these ambitions, the Council is set to agree the release of £50,000 of Section 106 seed funding to the charity to be spent directly on the ground. Alan Sanders, Chief Executive of RMF, said: “We are under no illusions about the task ahead of us given the condition the site is currently in. However, we have been extremely pleased with the discussions we’ve had with the Council and Southwick 1882 who, like us, are fully committed to ensuring that we make a real success of this fantastic opportunity. We can’t wait to get started.” Tony Kybett, Chairman of Southwick Football Club (1882), said: “We are absolutely delighted that we have been given the opportunity to return to our home at Old Barn Way and look forward to working in partnership with the Russell Martin Foundation and being an integral part of the community based football proj-
ect that the residents of Southwick and Adur can be proud of. “Without the tremendous support we have received locally, nationally and internationally the football club would have ceased to exist. Although it has been a frustrating ten months we acknowledge the work carried out by the officers and staff at the Council during these extraordinary times. They have ensured the proud history of football in Southwick will continue.” The Council has also agreed direct tenancy terms to retain Saferide Motorcycle & Scooter Training on the site, providing it with security from future tenancy issues and providing an ongoing income for the local authority.

Ropetackle launches Crowdfunder to survive Covid crisis and secure future Shoreham’s much-loved cultural hub, Ropetackle Arts Centre, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £10,000, in a bid to survive the devastating impact of Covid-19. With ongoing government restrictions and repeated closures, Ropetackle has lost 70% of its income and two thirds of its seated capacity. It is now reaching out to the community with a giving campaign to help support its survival and secure its future. Since opening in 2007, the purpose-built venue, which is run almost entirely by volunteers, has grown to become a vibrant, award-winning hub for live music, comedy, theatre, film, and more. It has proved a successful launch pad for new entertainers and creative projects, an intimate space for established acts, and a friendly space for the whole community to enjoy inspiring arts events. A welcoming atmosphere and appreciative audiences have further earned it a solid reputation among local, national, and international performers. As chairman Martin Allen notes: “Ropetackle has become an integral part of the community and we know from audience feedback that it is a valuable asset for Shoreham and beyond. We work with many groups and partners within the area to ensure as many people as possible have access to the arts, and we are very committed and adaptable. “Working month-by-month, we’ve been able to put together a programme of socially distanced shows, films, children’s activities, and even a Christmas Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
pantomime, because we felt strongly the community should benefit from some joy and connection at a difficult time. “We adopted stringent guidelines to ensure iit was safe to do this, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “We are hugely grateful for the support we have already received – from the community, from Adur District Council and national government, and from the Arts Council – but to survive this crisis and secure our future, we need to raise more,” Martin says. “The latest lockdown forced us to cut short our Christmas pantomime, which generates a significant portion of the income needed to sustain Ropetackle, and we had to cancel and postpone many shows scheduled for 2021. “We want to build on the work we started in 2020 and keep serving the community with safe and uplifting shows. “We hope this Crowdfunder will help us achieve that goal, survive this current period of closure, and enable us to reopen as soon as we can, securing the future of arts and culture in Shoreham, Adur, and beyond.”

WAYS TO BEAT CANCER Adur East Lions Club is one of the many Lions Clubs in the South East district. Two cancer charities have formed a partnership with the South East district, LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal) and Brain Tumour Research. LIBRA is the official haematology charity for King’s College Hospital and raises vital funds to ensure new and improved treatments can be created for patients with blood cancers such as leukaemia and myeloma. We are optimistic that some of our charity events, that had to be cancelled last year, will be able to take place this year. In normal times, the Lions have a stall at the Shoreham Artisans market and during the easing of restrictions in the autumn, members of the public were very generous when we raised money for Brain Tumour research. We are looking forward to having our regular stall and are planning to take part in “Wear A Hat Day” to raise further money for Brain Tumour research. Please come and join us on the day at the Artisans market, hopefully on 20th March. We also remain hopeful that our golf day will take place in late May. The competition is a Texas Scramble so any golfer can join us regardless of ability. On Sunday 26th September, we are having a 10K fun run in East Grinstead to raise money for LIBRA. Dame Kelly Holmes who is a LIBRA supporter and honorary member of Lions Club International campaign said: “It’s wonderful that this exciting event will raise funds for LIBRA’s Going for Gold Campaign, helping to tackle blood cancers and blood disorders. I lost my mother to myeloma and understand how important it is that the best possible treatments are available to patients.
Inside Shoreham & Southwick March 2021
“I encourage regular and fun runners to enter the East Grinstead Lions Fun Run. It provides a great opportunity for entrants to get active, have fun, and raise sponsorship for LIBRA at the same time! “Why not get training in lockdown? Running is great for overall health and wellbeing and has so many benefits for people of all ages and abilities. “I wish East Grinstead Lions Club the very best with the Fun Run and hope that many people take part.” We would like as many members of the public as possible to join us and run on behalf of LIBRA. We are planning to have a special running vest to highlight the partnership between LIBRA and South East District Lions Clubs. Your generous donations enable the research to continue. Local dance school Brooks Dance Academy selected to represent TEAM ENGLAND with ten entries at Dance World Cup 2021 The Dance World Cup is the biggest dance competition in the world. Event due to take place 2–10 July 2021 in Burgos, Spain Brooks Dance Academy (BDA), based in Lancing, West Sussex, has qualified for the Dance World Cup Finals for the first time with an incredible ten entries. 39 get back to the studio with our dancers and start preparing! In March 2020, we had just completed our most successful competition season ever, and then COVID-19 hit. Subsequently, all the national events we qualified for were cancelled, and all of our classes moved online. “I’ve been so impressed at the resilience of our dancers over this time. The students have missed out on so much over the last year, and it’s so important to have a goal to look forward to and keep them motivated. I know the dancers are ready to give their best performance yet!
Jackie Brooks, principal of the school, said: “I’m thrilled the judges have recognised the talents of our competitive team. After a difficult year for the school and constantly adapting to new measures, our selection for this event has been a real boost to our dancers, teachers and families. I can’t wait to see our students on stage again soon.” Over the coming weeks and months, BDA and their dancers will be embarking on fundraising activities to cover entry fees, membership fees and costumes for this illustrious event.
