Car club coming to Shoreham as Adur Council steps up climate change fight measures Drivers will be able to rent vehicles from an Adur car park as part of a new trial for the district’s first-ever Car Club.
Two parking bays for hybrid vehicles, a car and a van, will soon be designated at the Shoreham Centre, from which people can hire from Enterprise Car Club on an hourly or daily rate, for as long as they need. The scheme, which is set to go live at the Pond Road car park next month, is being trialled for one year as part of the Council’s wider sustainability response, which includes efforts to reduce carbon emissions and car ownership where possible. It is hoped the move will help to reduce congestion on the roads, increase travel options for those with limited or no access to a car and, over time, improve air quality in the area. Cllr Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, said: “I’m delighted we have secured this deal with Enterprise Car Club and want to thank my colleague Cllr Emma Evans, the Executive Member for the Environment, for her hard work behind the scenes to deliver the project. “As a Council we have set tough targets in the fight against climate change, including becoming a carbon neutral authority by 2030, and what we have learnt is that lots of little actions together can have a big impact. This is one of them.” Cllr Emma Evans, the Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: “We hope that offering this service to locals will support a shift away from individual car reliance, while providing a hassle-free, environmentallyfriendly alternative. These bookings for specific journeys can cut down on the number of overall trips made and of course the vehicles themselves are low emission helping to combat air pollution. “If the trial works and usage is high we may Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
Photo: Drivers will be able to rent vehicles as part of a new trial for Adur’s first-ever Car Club expand the scheme which will increase the potential to cut emissions and reduce congestion.” She added that the Council was working hard to secure a bike share scheme for the district in the near future. Research shows that Car Club cars produce 43% less carbon dioxide from tailpipe emissions than the average UK car. The positive impact is amplified by the fact that each car club vehicle displaces 10.5 private cars. Car Club members can reserve vehicles via the app, online or by phone and then access them at any time from the self-service system, using the app or an access card. Users will only pay for the time and distance they are required for without any other added expenses, as Enterprise takes care of fuel, road tax, servicing, parking permits and cleaning. Vehicles are thoroughly cleaned after every use. Sign up fee is £60. Adur District Council declared a climate

Tree planting exercise sees 30 youngsters making a difference to Shoreham’s Buckingham Park School children have played their part in helping the climate by taking part in a tree-planting exercise led by the Councils’ Park Rangers and Tree Action.
A group of 30 youngsters from Buckingham Park Primary School were invited to plant 18 sweet chestnut trees in the middle of Buckingham Park in Shoreham. The initiative provided the children with the chance to enjoy time out in the open green space, learn about what’s important for the climate and work as part of a team. Nathan Hollisey-McLean, the school’s Assistant Head Teacher, said: “A lot of the children live in a flat or a house where they haven’t got a garden - so many of them haven’t experienced planting anything - let alone a sapling or a tree. “Being just down the road, our students spend a lot of time here and have a strong connection to Buckingham Park, so it will be pretty cool for them to see something they’ve planted grow over their lifetimes. “A lot of children these days are aware of climate change and deforestation, so it’s great that they know how trees feed the planet and are aware that we need to keep planting.” Ricky Purnell, from Tree Action UK, coorganised the event - and has been working with local schools and the Councils to get children more involved with tree planting across the area.
Photo: Marcus, Freddie and Zeon planting their tree in Buckingham Park The not for profit community interest company organises tree-planting events in schools, colleges, public spaces and on private land, to improve the environment, tackle climate change and improve the mental wellbeing of young people through connecting them with nature. Ricky said: “Planting trees is a stress releasing exercise. It allows those who spend too much time on screens to have some quality time to connect with the environment. “Not only is it a great team building activity, but it also encourages our future generations to do their part in helping with the world’s climate crisis.” The Councils are always looking for ways to improve sustainability across the area’s green spaces. The project was organised by Liam Lord, who is the Arboricultural Inspector for the Councils. He said: continued p/12

Time’s running out for local businesses to apply for vital restart funding Vital funding is still available to support local businesses to get up and running again as further sectors reopen in line with the latest easing of COVID restrictions.
The Restart Grant, which closes for applications on 30th June 2021, is one of several financial support packages that in the last year have been created for businesses impacted by the COVID pandemic. Applications, which can be done online via an easy-to-use portal, can be completed at on our Coronavirus (COVID-19): Business Support page. The Grant is primarily designed or businesses in the hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym sectors, which make up a high proportion of the business profile of Adur and Worthing and are the latest to open in line with the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown. These sectors are some of the worst hit financially due to the length of time they have had to remain closed. The purpose of the Restart Grant is to support businesses to reopen safely. Many businesses have had to adapt their way of working to be able to operate in line with COVID safety restrictions, and have been supported by Adur & Worthing Councils’ COVID Information Officers to help them do so. This includes the hospitality sector which has had to put in place a range of safety measures to be able to welcome their customers back. Eligible businesses in the hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym sectors can apply to Adur & Worthing Councils for a one-off grant of up to £18,000. Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
Businesses in the non-essential retail sectors can also apply for a grant under the Restart Scheme of up to £6,000. Further discretionary funding is also available for local businesses, particularly those in the Adur district. The Additional Restrictions Grant is for businesses and organisations that have been severely impacted by the restrictions and have not been eligible for other funding support or are in need of additional support. Cllr Brian Boggis, Executive Member for Regeneration for Adur District Council, said: “We know many businesses, sole traders and freelancers have been impacted by the Covid pandemic but may not realise they are eligible for financial support. We encourage businesses in Adur to get in touch to find out what they may be entitled to.” Cllr Kevin Jenkins, Executive Member for Regeneration for Worthing Borough Council, said: “The Restart Grant has made a vital difference to many local businesses to help them to get up and running again - it’s great to see our town bouncing back from this challenging last year.”

Heartbeat and Holby City actor Sophie Ward joins Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart on Society of Authors literary Heartbeat and Holby City actor Sophie Ward joins Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart on Society of Authors literary shortlist Actor and writer Sophie Ward and Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart are among six writers shortlisted for the 2021 McKitterick Prize. A total of 34 authors have been shortlisted by the Society of Authors for five annual awards and a prize fund worth over £100,000. The shortlists also include prize-winning children’s author Kiran Millwood Hargreave, former Scottish gang member turned novelist Graeme Armstrong, lawyer turned children’s author Rashmi Sirdeshpande, Ghanaian Londoner, podcaster and blogger Maame Blue, and 76-year-old debut novelist Elfan Jones. The Lost Village Of Pende. “Successful authors’ careers can and should begin anywhere at any time, regardless of background or age” Ward’s acting career began in the 1970s and has included film, television and stage work. Her debut novel Love and Other Thought Experiments was published in 2020 to critical acclaim and was longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. Stuart’s Shuggie Bain went on to win the 2020 Booker Prize and on 13 May this year was announced as winner of the 2021 British Book Awards. The McKitterick Prize, judged by novelists Sabrina Mahfouz, Nick Rennison and Christopher Tayler, is an annual award from the Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
Society of Authors for debut novelists over 40. Also in the running for the prize are All the Water in the World by Karen Raney, The Apparition Phase by Will Maclean, As You Were by Elaine Feeney, and Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line by Deepa Anappara. Nick Rennison said: “The titles on the shortlist vary greatly in subject and setting, from a young Glaswegian’s love for his deeply damaged mother to a teenager’s encounter with the potentially supernatural, from the dark underbelly of an Indian city to middle-class American suburbia. “What unites them all are energy, inventiveness and a commitment to the novel as an endlessly rewarding, and inspiring, literary form.” The McKitterick Prize is one of the nine prizes which make up the Society of Authors’ Awards, worth over £100,000. Each year, the Society of Authors say they aim to “celebrate the transformative power of the written word” and to demonstrate through the Awards that successful authors’ careers can and should begin anywhere at any time, regardless of background or age (the youngest

14 shortlisted writers this year are in their twenties, the oldest in their seventies). Scottish novelist Graeme Armstrong embodies this more than most. Shortlisted for the Betty Trask Prize and Awards for debut novelists under 35, his novel The Young Team is inspired by Armstrong’s own teenage experience of North Lanarkshire gang culture and addiction. He was inspired to study English Literature after reading Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting at the age of 16 and seeing relatable characters on the page for the first time. Armstrong said he was “thrilled” with the unexpected shortlisting, saying, “Working class voices and themes are still viewed by many as not befitting of literary recognition. This goes some way to challenge that and to convince other young people with greatly managed expectations, that they too can achieve dreams they have been told are above their designated station.”

Betty Trask Prize judge Vaseem Khan said: “Exploring dark themes with a deftly humorous touch, Armstrong takes us inside lives blighted by drugs, drink, the class barrier and chronic poverty, but never allows us to forget the essential humanity of these unforgettable characters. Comparisons will be made to Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting, but this novel stands on its own two feet.” Armstrong has been shortlisted for the Betty Trask Prize and Awards alongside Bad Love by Maame Blue, The Last Good Man by Thomas McMullan, The Liar’s Dictionary by Eley Williams, The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, and Nneoma IkeNjoku’s not yet published novel The Water House. Meanwhile, lawyer turned children’s author Rashmi Sirdeshpande has been shortlisted with illustrator Diane Ewen for the Queen’s Knickers Award for their Never Show a T-Rex a Book. The Award, now in its second year, was founded by Nicholas Allan, author of The Queen’s Knickers, for outstanding original illustrated books for children aged seven or under. Sirdeshpande and Ewen’s book is up against The Diddle That Dummed written by Kes Gray and illustrated by Fred Blunt, The Gobbledegook Book written by Joy Cowley and illustrated by Giselle Clarkson, Mr Penguin and the Catastrophic Cruise written and illustrated by Alex T. Smith, The Pirates are Coming! written by John Condon and illustrated by Matt Hunt, and Lift-the-Flap Questions and Answers About Plastic written by Katie Daynes and illustrated by Marie-Eve Tremblay. The winners of all nine Society of Authors’ Awards will be announced on 9 June in an online ceremony introduced by novelist Joanne Harris. A series of free online events themed around the Society of Authors’ Awards, featuring past and present winners and judges, will run from 25 May to 18 June.

The Lost Village Of Pende During the Middle Ages, the Adur wasn’t a river but an estuary. Between New Shoreham and Lancing, this expanse of water was a mile wide providing easy access to the sea. On its bank was the village of Pende. This too was an alterative name for the Adur in records made at that time. The name Pende originates from the ancient word Pynd meaning a piece of water. Pende was a busy fishing and merchant port as well as a shipbuilding hub in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was reachable by a coastal road, which began at what is now the junction of Shoreham High Street and the Norfolk Bridge, with the actual road now lost to the river. Pende was also served by the Shoreham ferry that crossed the estuary in the direction of what is now the upper Lancing road.
Pende is not featured in the Domesday Book of 1086, as it didn’t exist at the time. It sprung into being when England needed to build more ships in an arms race to control the English Channel and deter invasion. French and Spanish raiders are known to have ransacked and burned Pende, but in 1359 the greater danger of coastal flooding was recognised. A commission was established, tasked with ensuring the repair of the village’s weathered sea wall. In 1385, with a French invasion looming, a tax of 3d was payable on every catch of fish landed at English ports to raise funds for their defence. In 1399, the shipbuilders of Pende were constructing a vessel for the Abbot of Fecamp who was based at Steyning. However the ship was never completed as the timber was seized. It had been illegally felled from the wood at Warminghurst Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
without a licence from the king.
In 1420, a ship from Pende sailed to Rouen to supply Henry V’s army that had captured Normandy. In 1421 The Duke of Bourbon, who was previously captured at the battle of Agincourt and imprisoned in England, returned to France by a ship sailing from Shoreham. He was in the custody of Robert Poynings who to ensure the duke’s safe return employed nineteen Men-at-Arms paid 12d a day and forty archers paid 6d a day. Poynings received from the Crown 4s a day. There was also severe flooding of the town of Shoreham during this year.
Pende was lost to the sea, during the mid-fifteenth century when flooding was an increasingly common occurrence. It is possible that the sea wall was damaged by a French incursion and failed to protect it. From 1348, records show a Carmelite Priory had existed, close to the coast, east of Shoreham, with some houses built even closer to the sea than this structure. As the encroachment by the tide continued, it first claimed these dwellings, and then moved ever closer to the priory itself. The friars were finally forced to abandon their priory in 1493, as the frequent battering by the sea had made it too perilous for them to continue to live there. The friars cont/d page 38

Story
To celebrate our daughter’s 3rd birthday, we’re doing 3 beach clean, to raise £300 (or £3000!) for 3 charities! Thank you so much for supporting our events and choosing to support either Sea Shepherd, Surfers Against Sewage or RNLI. You’re making a little girl feel very special by donating. Callie is very proud when helping so this will be a huge reward for her. We live by the sea and I naturally pick up rubbish every time I go for a walk or a swim. And my daughter Callie started doing the same! Now we have to do it every time we go to the beach, to the park, etc.. She even started doing that on her way back from nursery! We have done a few beach clean ourselves and now we would like residents, the local community of Shoreham-by-Sea and like minded people to get involved. The dates are: - Sunday 6 June 2021: Meet up at the Shorehamby-Sea Harbour Club , at 10 am. https://goo.gl/ maps/Yq1a5MbXPZmmbwuW9

Back in the swim as refreshed Wadurs opens its doors again Visitors to Wadurs in Shoreham are back in the swim after the leisure centre re-opening this week after the lifting of Covid restrictions and an extensive refurbishment. South Downs Leisure (SDL) were delighted to be able to re-open Wadurs Swimming Pool Monday after the facility had been closed for so long after previous operators went bust and pandemic shut all leisure centres In the meantime the centre’s owners, Adur District Council, took the opportunity to extensively refurbish the changing rooms and conduct essential maintenance on the pool tiles in order to get this facility ready for the customers to return. Chief Executive of South Downs Leisure, Duncan Anderson, said he was delighted to see returning customers to Wadurs which, he said, provided an essential life skill to the children in the local area. “Feedback since reopening has been really positive, as regular visitors get used to new operators and new timetables,” he said, “We really look forward to welcoming more swimmers back to the centre over the coming days and weeks.” Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr Emma Evans, said: “All leisure facilities have had a hard time during the pandemic but we have not stood still and have taken the chance to give Wadurs a refurbishment that makes it fit for purpose and returns it as an essential leisure facility for all residents to enjoy.” Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021

People wanted from every town and city in Great Britain to help make a new national walking network During the Spring 2020 lockdown volunteers from across the nation plotted a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain’s towns and cities. Without leaving home over 7,000 ‘Slow Ways’ walking routes were mapped using existing paths, trails and roads. Combined, the routes stretch for 100,000km and lap the equator twice. The team behind Slow Ways is now looking for people from every town and city in Great Britain to walk and review the routes to make sure they work in practice. Dan Raven-Ellison started the Slow Ways initiative just before the country went into lockdown at the start of last year. “The Slow Ways walking network will be something we can all enjoy for generations to come. Working from their living rooms and kitchens, volunteers have done an incredible job of drafting the network, but now we need to make sure it works on the ground, quite literally. “To do that, we need people to head out and walk all the proposed routes to check them. “Making use of country paths, under-used ways and city streets, the idea is to make it easier for people to plan walking journeys between neighbouring places and combine routes to go on longer distance walks. “Some people will use Slow Ways to simply see friends in neighbouring towns. Others Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
will use them to get to a festival, for a walking challenge to raise money for charity, or as time to reflect while exploring nature. “Millions of us love walking - it’s such a simple thing, and it benefits so many of us in so many different ways. What if we had a proper national walking network that inspired more people to walk more often, further, and for more purposes?” Thousands of people are needed to put the Slow Ways network through its paces whilst assessing routes for accuracy, safety and accessibility. To find out more and to help simply visit the Slow Ways website (www. slowways.org), choose a route, walk it and leave a review. a matter of taste. The colour example contains images which each feature two tree trunks. A simple connection. The predominant colours from left to right, blue, red nd green so the two cool colours frame the hot red.
Pictures in ‘portrait’ format work best particularly if they are composed in a harmonious way. The left hand picture on the monochrome example here, has a figure walking into the frame, the next as a central figure and the right hand image has a figure walking out of the frame. It would be more traditional if, in the right hand image, the igure was in the same place but walking back into the frame…but I’m ot a very traditional photographerw! It’s

Stay Balanced! With the added motivation of exercising in warm weather combined with more of us working from home, Alex Marek, Osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains how to keep your musculoskeletal system balanced, to prevent exercise induced injuries.
Postural and Phasic Muscles The Tonic (or Postural) and Phasic muscle theory originated in the late 1960s and since then many studies have researched the importance of balancing these groups. Tonic / Postural Muscles - These contain mainly slow-twitch fibres, meaning they have a greater capacity for prolonged work e.g. keeping you upright at your desk whilst gravity pushes you downwards. Postural muscles are prone to shortening as a response to over or under-use. Phasic muscles, on the other hand, contain mostly fast-twitch fibres and are more suited to movement. These muscles are more easily fatigued and prone to over stretching and weakening. Musculoskeletal Balance – Think of these muscles working together like “pulley systems” on a sailing boat. To keep the boat balanced upright and moving forwards, the correct tensions must be applied to the sails. If one muscle group is doing too much or not enough work, this can result in imbalance, joint instability and a greater risk of injury.
Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
My three tips to help you avoid the perils of postural imbalance are: 1.) Don’t go from zero to hero! Pre or post- exercise, spend time warming up your soft tissues and joints. A 15-20min fast walk before your run/gym session is a good start. 2.) Find excuses to spend a little time away from your desk throughout the day make that cuppa, walk up and down the stairs, jog a marathon in your garden (ok, perhaps not a marathon just yet!!!) 3.) Little and often wins the day. It may be more beneficial to combine a 30-min fast walk with 2 x 10-mins of light exercise a couple of times a day, rather than a 50/60min blast after work. If you have any queries or are experiencing any joint/muscle pain, please don’t hesitate to contact our caring and experienced team at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre. 01273 567654 www.shorehamosteo.co.uk

Sweaty Feet? This month we are looking at and discussing the most weather appropriate issue of sweaty feet (Hyperhidrosis) Most of us have suffered from foot perspiration and odour from time to time, yet for some people, sweaty feet are a persistent problem which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. There are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else in the body so it’s not surprising that this can cause foot problems such as foot odour and a greater risk of minor skin infections, through athlete’s foot, or blisters. Hot weather can make matters worse, although sweaty feet is a winter, as well as a summer, problem. It can also be an inherited condition or caused through hormonal changes. If you are suffering with sweaty feet and their effects, why not make an appointment with our Podiatrist Karen, here at the First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, contact us on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.

Turning Tides, local homeless charity, seeks volunteer befrienders across the county to combat isolation. Throughout the pandemic Turning Tides’ befriending volunteers have been critical in supporting the growing number of men and women who have become homeless. The charity are now looking to grow the service significantly to combat the isolation that is often experienced by those having to sleep rough. Danielle Huet, Volunteer Coordinator at Turning Tides explains; “During the pandemic we have been providing a befriending service to combat the feelings of loneliness that our clients were increasingly experiencing, especially during lockdown. The benefits have been so significant during such a challenging time that we are launching a new befriending drive - to secure more befrienders countywide as part of our Routes to Roots programme.” “The Routes to Roots initiative helps people recover from the experience of homelessness and feel part of their local community. It has a really comprehensive matching process whereby we pair a volunteer with a client who has similar interests so they can establish a supportive non-judgemental connection. The relationship is a very powerful one, so whilst being informal and voluntary, it looks to build strength and resilience in very real and practical ways. It could involve attending a community group together or meeting up for a coffee in the park. Having a companion who listens, is non-judgemental, and kind is very restorative. During the befriending relationship the client can gain confidence and self-worth which in turn bolsters their resilience and empowerment – which is critical in helping a client navigate their journey out of homelessness.” David, who has been attending befriending sessions throughout the pandemic and currently reInside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
sides in supported accommodation with Turning Tides, attested; “Before the Befriending scheme I was totally alone… without the social skills that seem second nature to most people. I wouldn’t meet, or have conversation with anyone for weeks on end. The scheme has given purpose to my life. It may seem a small thing to many, but for me, it is vital. Once every week, I meet and talk with someone that actually wants to talk to me.” Another client called Andy recounted that the service had been a ‘blessing’; “Befriending gives me a feeling of self-worth, support, belonging. Knowing someone cares is an amazing feeling. I have more confidence and hope now, as I tackle my social anxiety.” Research has shown that over three quarters of the men and women who have experienced homelessness also reported prolonged periods of loneliness, more than three times the level of loneliness reported amongst older people.* Loneliness can be detrimental both emotionally and physically and is often referred to as a silent killer. Undeniably, it has been of increasing concern during the pandemic. Multiple lockdowns, alongside social distancing measures, have prevented us from joining sociable and leisurely pursuits.

As restrictions ease, Turning Tides is looking to
grow their befriending service, to ensure the increasing number of clients needing their services are able to access such a vital source of support across the county. Particularly, they are looking for potential volunteer befrienders in the Horsham area. Danielle continues “We are hoping to recruit a further 50 volunteers who would then be matched with clients within the local area. Volunteers will have access to comprehensive training and check in sessions to ensure they are confident in their role. Hopefully, as restrictions ease, they will also be
able to accompany clients to appointments, helping to motivate them to join community groups or fulfil goals and develop skills which will ultimately help to prepare them for the future when they move on to independent living.” If you would like to find out more about the Routes to Roots programme or submit your interest in becoming a befriender please visit Turning Tides’ website: www.turning-tides. org.uk/volunteering/ or contact the team on: Email: volunteering@turning-tides.org.uk Phone: 01903 680743 Turning Tides recently launched a Crisis Appeal as record numbers of local people are experiencing homelessness due to the economic impact of Covid. News from St Mary de Haura Church Shoreham
A couple of years ago, Shoreham District Ornithological Society (SDOS) installed a number of nest boxes in the churchyard. “An era has come to an end”. These were the opening words of an article in the Adur Herald on Friday May 8th 1981. It reported that Mr Ernest Cox was standing down as secretary and then churchwarden of St Mary de Haura Church, Shoreham after over 30 years’ service. There was a photo of him outside St Mary’s with his successor as churchwarden, Mr Ian Tompkin.
In May 2021, Ian retired from the role of churchwarden after 40 years’ unstinting and loyal service to the church and community. Canon Ann Waizeneker, vicar of St Mary’s, paid tribute to Ian during the Sunday church service on May 16th, when gifts and cards were given to him in recognition of his enormous contribution to the life and wellbeing of the church, which has included the restoration of the vaulting in two phases between 2003 and 2006.
She said that Ian had been a steady, reassuring presence in the church and a very visible and steadfast ambassador for St Mary’s in the town. His passion for history and the magnificent building that is St Mary’s has been evident in the time and care he has devoted to the church. The role of churchwarden is an important voluntary one in the Church of England. There are usually two wardens and they are responsible for the church building, liaising with the Council over the upkeep of the churchyard, supporting the vicar and generally ensuring the church is fit for purpose and a welcoming presence Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
in the community. It is extremely unusual for someone to hold this demanding role for so long, and for most of his tenure Ian did this alongside his full time employment as history lecturer at Northbrook College Worthing and Bellerbys College In Brighton.
Ian said that it has been such a privilege to serve as churchwarden and he thanked all those over the past 40 years who have given him such firm support. There will be a special service later this year to mark Ian’s remarkable 40 years of service. A second era has come to an end! Are you a Friend of St Mary’s? it costs just £10 a year to support the ongoing maintenance and restoration of this beautiful building in the heart of Shoreham.

Indoor entertainment venues set to reopen with jam-packed entertainment programmes An array of inspiring and engaging arts and entertainment programmes have been organised by local theatres and cinemas as cultural events return to Adur and Worthing. International stars including musicians,
comedians and entertainers, as well as community artists, are all raring to go, as the easing of the Government’s Coronavirus restrictions will see indoor entertainment venues opening their doors once more. The long-awaited move means that from Monday (17th May 2021) residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a wide range of performances, screenings and exhibitions at Worthing Theatres and Museum, The Dome Cinema and The Ropetackle Arts Centre.
And organisers have been working hard to ensure their Spring and Summer programmes are jam-packed and include something for everyone.
At the Pavilion Theatre on Wednesday, Britain’s Got Talent finalist and comedian Daliso Chaponda will be performing his perfectly-timed Apocalypse Not Now show (on the WTAM website).
The Connaught Theatre is hosting The War of The Worlds (on the WTAM website) - Rhum and Clay’s contemporary reimagining of H.G. Wells’ novel and Orson Welles’ science fiction thriller, presented in partnership with Brighton Festival. And at The Dome, in-person screenings are being resumed after the ‘Dome From Home’ programme which saw would-be cinemagoers watching films and documentaries online. On Monday the cinema is kicking off with eight showings, including Peter Rabbit, Nomadland and Sound of Metal. Councillor Dr. Heather Mercer, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for
Inside Shoreham & Southwick June 2021
Customer Services, added:
“Culture is more important to our town than ever before, and I am so pleased the much-loved arts and entertainment venues across Worthing can welcome visitors back.
“The high-quality events these establishments host are not only enjoyable and informative, they draw visitors in from far and wide, contributing to the wider economy of the town.” There are also plenty of opportunities for those who want to enjoy culture while outdoors. The Council-owned Colonnade House is showing three new exhibitions this month, including a nature exhibition by wildlife and landscape artist Cate Woods, from 25th to 29th May 2021.
Those walking along the seafront will be able to browse the new open-air exhibition at the The Seafront Gallery. The latest exhibition, launching on Monday, is a photography display titled ‘A Winter’s Swim’ by Jonathan Browning, which explores the rise of sea swimming during the pandemic. Over in Adur the Ropetackle has a packed summer programme of blockbuster films, short stories, musical performances and more. Councillor Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, said: “After an incredibly difficult few months for our indoor culture and entertainment venues, step three of the roadmap out of lockdown

The friars were finally forced to abandon their priory in 1493, as the frequent battering by the sea had made it too perilous for them to continue to live there. The friars retreated inland to Sele near Bramber. Shoreham High Street was not in these early times protected by the spit of land that now forms Shoreham Beach. In 1586, there is record of a disastrous flood, which caused the much of New Shoreham to be ruined or submerged under water. The sea now reached the shallow cliff upon which New Road was built. These floods, and the loss of nearly half of the town, damaged the prosperity of New Shoreham severely at this time. Today few traces of Pende remain, but it was remembered by the common fields being named North and South Penhill. This later resulted in the name of Penhill Road at Lancing. provide a much-needed boost for these businesses, which can finally open their doors after months of preparation. “I urge our residents and visitors to play their part and enjoy the events on offer safely, while adhering to the Coronavirus guidelines put in place by the venues.” As well as allowing indoor entertainment venues to open, hospitality businesses will be able to serve people indoors. The Councils have been offering a range of COVID support to premises to ensure that people are able to enjoy all the area has to offer safely. This is in addition to its high-profile Roadmap to Return campaign.
