People wanted from every town and city in Great Britain to help make a new national walking network During the Spring 2020 lockdown volunteers from across the nation plotted a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain’s towns and cities. Without leaving home over 7,000 ‘Slow Ways’ walking routes were mapped using existing paths, trails and roads. Combined, the routes stretch for 100,000km and lap the equator twice. The team behind Slow Ways is now looking for people from every town and city in Great Britain to walk and review the routes to make sure they work in practice. Dan Raven-Ellison started the Slow Ways initiative just before the country went into lockdown at the start of last year. “The Slow Ways walking network will be something we can all enjoy for generations to come. Working from their living rooms and kitchens, volunteers have done an incredible job of drafting the network, but now we need to make sure it works on the ground, quite literally. “To do that, we need people to head out and walk all the proposed routes to check them. “Making use of country paths, under-used ways and city streets, the idea is to make it easier for people to plan walking journeys between neighbouring places and combine routes to go on longer distance walks.

time to reflect while exploring nature. “Millions of us love walking - it’s such a simple thing, and it benefits so many of us in so many different ways. What if we had a proper national walking network that inspired more people to walk more often, further, and for more purposes?” Thousands of people are needed to put the Slow Ways network through its paces whilst assessing routes for accuracy, safety and accessibility. To find out more and to help simply visit the Slow Ways website (www. slowways.org), choose a route, walk it and leave a review. All of the kilometres walked and feedback shared by users will help to establish a network that’s not only trusted, but widely used to connect people and communities across Great Britain. Find out more at www.slowways.org

“Some people will use Slow Ways to simply see friends in neighbouring towns. Others will use them to get to a festival, for a walking challenge to raise money for charity, or as 8

Presentation Try a Triptych Here’s an idea to present or display your photographs. Try a triptych, a grouping of three similar, themed or connected images grouped together.

photographer! It’s a matter of taste. The colour example contains images which each feature two tree trunks. A simple connection. The predominant colours from left to right, blue, red nd green so the two cool colours frame the hot red. You may wish to produce a triptych to display on your website, share on social media or print

Pictures in ‘portrait’ format work best particularly if they are composed in a harmonious way. The left hand picture on the monochrome example here, has a figure walking into the frame, the next as a central figure and the right hand image has a figure walking out of the frame. It would be more traditional if, in the right hand image, the igure was in the same place but walking back into the frame…but I’m ot a very traditional

Margaret Frost Margaret Frost was born in the rectory at Kingston by Sea on the 26th of November 1920. Her father was the Reverend Ernest Isaac Frost, her mother Olive Jessie Frost and her brother Ernest Julian Frost. The family moved to the rectory at Pulborough, and a governess, who lived in the village, educated Margaret from the age of five. At eight years old, Margaret was sent to boarding school in Bognor Regis. Two years later, at the age of ten she stood at Shoreham airfield watching as her mother, a keen aviator took to the skies. It wasn’t until Margaret was eleven that her mother took her up for her very first ride in a plane.

During the Second World War, Margaret joined the W.R.N.S. in 1940 and on the 25th of November 1942, the Air Transport In 1938, when Margaret was eighteen and Auxiliary, women’s ferry pool. By then the Civil Air Guard months of eye exercises by a specialist. She had been set up with flying lessons being was temporarily grounded, but when finally offered at half price because of a government passed medically fit, she was trained to fly subsidy, due to the urgent need to find fighter again. Margaret Frost began by piloting the pilots for the Royal Air Force and the Fleet Hawker Hart, which was a two-seater biAir Arm. Even with the subsidy, Margaret had plane and then moved on to the Tiger Moth. to spend every penny she had to learn to fly. Margaret could then fly the famous bi-plane Training in a ‘Gypsy Moth’ plane she notched fighters of the Fleet Air Arm: the Gloster up ten flying hours before being allowed to fly Gladiator and the Fairy Swordfish Torpedo solo. Bomber. Both in their day were as renowned as the Spitfire. cont/d 12 11 Village Living Magazine June 2021

Margaret became a ferry pilot and was one of the one hundred and sixty-eight Spitfire Women tasked with delivering the combat planes from the factory to frontline airfields. The government believed the ferry pilots should fly the planes with their guns empty, despite the very high risk of them being shot down by marauding German fighters. The Spitfire women also had to fly in horrendous weather conditions and beyond the usual safety limit set for flying hours. The aircraft they flew had to be urgently delivered, armed, refuelled and scrambled into action to combat the German fighter and bomber raids. After delivering a Spitfire to Dumfries in Scotland Margaret took the train back to London. A passing gentleman helped her off the train with her large heavy bag and was baffled when Margaret told him it was her parachute. Like most people at the time, he was unaware of the vital role women like Margaret Frost were playing. After the war, when she was demobbed in September 1945, Margaret went to live with her mother in Henfield. She then enlisted as one of the first pilots in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Volunteer Reserve. By then she had notched up six hundred and fifty flying hours. International newspapers featured a photograph of her sitting at in the cockpit of a Spitfire. In 1950 Margaret took a job at the War Office where she was engaged in topsecret work at the Fighter Control Unit during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Margaret retired in the mid 1970s, but rarely spoke about being a pilot during the Second World War. When interviewed by the BBC for the documentary ‘Spitfire Women’ in September 2010, eighty-nine year old Margaret acknowledged too the men of Air Transport 12

Many were severely disabled by war injuries, but continued to fly as ferry pilots, alongside their female colleagues, delivering planes to the active combat squadrons and well as working as ground crew. Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club in action In the Community Although Covid has restricted community interaction and curtailed many of the Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District’s usual local involvement over the past year, Club members have been meeting online via Zoom to plan future events and introduce new fund raising ideas. A Rotary Club monthly lottery has been launched with three monthly prizes of up to £80 which will increase as support grows. Our public collection in August raised over £1000 for victims of the devastating Beirut disaster and we were able to continue our support for the Rotary ‘End Polio Now’ world wide campaign with a donation and planting thousands of Crocuses at Storrington Memorial Pond that provided a burst of purple colour in Spring. The Rotary Christmas Tree Recycling scheme had to be cancelled but, thanks to the generosity of so many people, we were able to complete our distribution of 50 Christmas Sacks containing gifts, Christmas goodies, clothing and a cash voucher to those less fortunate in our community.
