Shoreham Society Seeks Local Views The influential 500-strong Shoreham Society is inviting local residents to complete a brief online survey. These uncertain times have caused many of us to re-think what matters to us. Where we live, the lovely Shoreham-bySea, is an important part of that. To allow The Shoreham Society to grow with and adapt to changing needs we are asking residents to let us know what matters to them about our town. Please help us by taking a few moments to fill in our short survey which you can find at https://www. smartsurvey.co.uk/s/shoreham2020/ or on www.shorehamSociety.org.uk The survey is anonymous and you can choose which questions to answer. We will only use your responses to inform the direction of The Shoreham Society. Chairman Gerard Rosenberg said: “The society has an excellent record of achievement, a wide range of key contacts and a strong voice for influencing decisions, so it offers a great opportunity for local residents to have a positive impact on the future of their town. “But the committee needs an influx of younger residents with a passion for the town who can shape and direct the organisation their way for future challenges and opportunities.” He said he was confident that residents would seize the opportunity to take over and re-invigorate the society. Formed in 1984, the society is a registered charity with no political ties or commercial interests. It has influenced a number of important developments in the town, working with planners, developers and architects Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020
to achieve significant improvements to many proposals. It also organises events and makes representations on a wide variety of local matters including environmental issues and public amenities. Its website attracts hundreds of viewers every week. “We hope interested local residents with ideas about the future of the town will take the opportunity to get involved and move the society forward,” said Mr Rosenberg. Shoreham Folk Dance Club Suspended ... The dancers at Shoreham Folk Dance Club have had to reluctantly sit out the Corona-virus pandemic season as our dancing style requires a lot of social interaction. The club was formally suspended (first time since our formation 71 years ago) a few days ago when it became clear that a relaxation of social distancing was not imminent. Also, some of our members and our guests were medically vulnerable or shielding. However, we have decided to rebrand our club, including a change to our venue and meeting time. We intend to become an afternoon social-country dance club, we don’t know

where or when yet but if you would like to be advised please inform our secretary by email at sfdc@gmail.com Or you can check out our website at www.shorehamfolkdance.org.uk As always, we will continue to offer a very warm welcome to visitors, mew members or friends from times long ago. The caller will explain all the moves required so you can enjoy yourself whatever level of experience you may/may not have.
We intend also to continue with our programme of Saturday evening dances in Shoreham, Sunday afternoon cream tea dances in Pulborough and Residential dance weekends in Bournemouth/Portsmouth. All of these will be subject to satisfactory attendance numbers so if you are interested come
along as soon as we are able to reopen. Keith Calver, Chairman

5 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT EQUITY RELEASE Many over-55s are using Equity Release to unlock property wealth. We take a look at five key things you need to know as well as the drawbacks. 4. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN IN YOUR HOME Equity Release can release funds without having to downsize. 22% of over-55s believe they could lose their home or be forced to move, which is not the case. Borrowers have the right to remain in their home until In the second quarter of 2020, £698 million of property the end of the loan. 5. YOU DON’T HAVE TO OWN YOUR HOME OUTRIGHT wealth was accessed by over 13,000 homeowners, according to the Equity Release Council. Equity Release TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR EQUITY RELEASE can seem attractive but it’s important you understand In fact, you can use Equity Release to pay off mortgage debt you may have remaining as you enter retirement it first. Here are five things you might not know. to reduce outgoings. 1. YOU CAN MAKE MORE THAN ONE WITHDRAWAL Every year older homeowners use Equity Release to help access millions of pounds to fund retirement. Rising Property prices and greater life expectancy mean that it’s becoming an increasingly popular option. But is it right for you?
THROUGH EQUITY RELEASE It is possible to take a single lump sum using Equity Release but this isn’t the only option. ‘Drawdown’ Lifetime Mortgages can provide more flexibility and act as a cash reserve for unforeseen events. 2. YOU CAN PAY THE INTEREST ON YOUR LOAN IF YOU CHOOSE TO Usually, Equity Release customers will ‘roll up’ the interest and make no repayments on the amount borrowed until the sale of the property when they die or enter long-term care. However, some products allow you to pay the interest or reduce the debt. 3. MOST EQUITY RELEASE PRODUCTS HAVE A NO NEGATIVE EQUITY GUARANTEE One in five over-55s were unsure if they could still leave an inheritance after releasing equity from their property. Most Equity Release providers offer a ‘no negative equity guarantee’ meaning that the amount owed, including any interest accrued, cannot exceed the value of the property. T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk
Having this additional source of income in retirement can be appealing but there can be drawbacks to Equity Release. You need to bear in mind the effect of compounding interest - meaning that the outstanding debt can rise quickly if you don’t pay off the interest. Equity Release will reduce the value of your estate and, hence, the legacy you leave behind. Before you consider moving forward with Equity Release plans, you should take advice and assess your wider financial situation as you may have other assets that can help you achieve your retirement goals without the drawbacks of a Lifetime Mortgage. Please contact us to discuss your aspirations and the options available to you. SHOREHAM’S PREMIER INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISERS Equity Release will reduce the value of your estate and can affect your eligibility for means-tested benefits and could affect your entitlement to them. Equity Release may be costly to reverse and you may face early payment penalties if you want to switch provider, or pay off the debt.

New Website Connects Worthing Creative... Artists, musicians, graphic designers and more connected by West Sussex agency Worthing & Beyond have made it their mission to connect and showcase the long-standing creative talent of Worthing’s residents, in addition to the talents of the ‘new wave’ of people flooding into Worthing from Brighton, London and elsewhere. The project came around in response to the huge influx of younger people to Worthing and the surrounding area in recent years - people who have brought with them a rich variety of creative talent, collectives and businesses.
The creatives on the site range from artists, illustrators, photographers and graphic designers, to musicians, poets and street dance companies - plus many more. Most are based in the region from Southwick to Bognor Regis. The requirements for the site are open-ended; ‘creativity’ has a broad definition on Worthing & Beyond. “Anyone who makes a product can be listed on our site as a creative,” says Tom Lavis, who came up with the idea. “We write their profile, then share it on our social media.” Worthing & Beyond is free to join and use. The website’s networking facility isn’t restricted to the World Wide Web, either. Before COVID-19 struck, Worthing & Beyond held monthly meet-ups where creatives could socialise in person. With the pandemic now seemingly in decline, plans to hold informal meetups are once again re-starting, and ideas for larger events in the future are on the horizon. “We want to make sure people feel safe meeting up again, but that side of it - the interpersonal Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020
side - is what’s going to make Worthing & Beyond a success. There’s an abundance of talent here, and everyone’s excited to find physical hubs where they can go to socialise together,” says Tom.
Tom and his team at Huxley are now developing Worthing & Beyond to include a database of local businesses too, which will promote any local company that supports creativity in any way. “They could be a café who displays local art on the wall, or an organisation that donates their unused space for someone to promote an exhibition in. These sorts of relationships between corporate and creative communities are always really beneficial to a town, and I think that’s why the council have shown an active interest in the project.” If you are a creative, or a local business that supports creativity, and you want to get involved with Worthing & Beyond, send Huxley’s team an email at amy@huxleydigital.co.uk. The Graf Zeppelin It was the 26th of April 1930 and at 1pm people were already settling around their radios to listen to the FA cup final between Huddersfield Town and Arsenal. In Shoreham word spread to go outside as the famous airship LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was flying overhead. It was the largest airship ever built, at 776 ft long, 100 ft wide and 110 ft in depth. Its five Maybach V12 propeller engines powered the LZ 127 over the coast at Brighton, through clear skies on its way to London. It then flew over the cup final being held at Wembley Stadium, and attended by King George V.
LZ 127 headed on to Britain’s airship testing grounds at Cardington. According to LZ 127’s flight log it arrived at 5pm to moor at a vacant mast next to the stand that anchored Britain’s own airship the R100. LZ 127’s crew of 36 prepared for the return journey, while the 24 passengers who had paid £25 per head, marvelled at the two airships, the cutting edge of a new form of international commercial transport. At 6pm LZ 127 took off with both its day-trippers and the post on board bound for Germany. According to its flight log, LZ 127’s next voyage over the Sussex coast happened on the 18th of August 1931. Its scheduled arrival time at Hanworth Airpark, London was 7 pm. However it was over Aldershot at 5:45pm when it was radioed by air traffic control and was ordered to wait. Staying in one spot wasn’t possible when flying at 80 mph with 3,700,000 cubic feet of flammable gas on board to provide lift and fuel. Instead, the passengers were given an air tour of London and the southern counties. This also offered the opportunity for thousands of people on the ground to Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020
see the airship.
LZ 127 was the first commercial non-stop transatlantic passenger airliner, having taken 4 days in October 1928 to fly from Germany to Lakehurst Naval Air Station, New Jersey, USA. During that journey, LZ 127 had been feared lost when it made a distress call to report its fabric hull had torn loose from its tail. The crew had to perilously go outside in mid-air to tie it back down. On the return flight to Germany, LZ 127 was hit by a storm and blown back 200 miles to Newfoundland during the night. In 1929, LZ 127 left Germany and offered aerial tours of the Mediterranean, where it air- dropped mail bags as it flew over Rome, Palestine, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Athens, Budapest and Vienna. Due to the complex politics of the Middle East of the time, Britain leaned on Egypt to refuse an over-flight. A ticket for the first non-stop round-theworld flight was $3000 and LZ 127’s start and finishing point was Lakehurst USA. On board was British journalist Lady Grace Drummond-Hay who became the first woman to circumnavigate the world by air. A European Pan American tour between Spain, Brazil, and the US, carried 38 passengers in 1930 and was funded and commemorated by Spanish and US postage stamps.

In April 1931, LZ 127 hovered in the still air over the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt as part of its Middle Eastern tour. In July during its Polar flight LZ 127 landed on the frozen Arctic Ocean to deliver mail to the Soviet icebreaker Malygin. A multi-national science team on the flight recorded the Earth’s magnetic field and studied the meteorology of the upper atmosphere.
In 1932 LZ 127 became a regular passenger service linking Germany and Brazil, combining the luxury of an ocean cruise with the speed of air travel. However
LZ 127’s flights were not without their peril, which was sometimes caused by excited spectators. In Stockholm, Sweden the crowd launched fireworks. When crossing the Soviet Union-Lithuanian border LZ 127 was shot at with rifles and the bullets easily punched through the fabric skin. Flying over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, LZ 127 suddenly found itself in an uninten-

tional aerial minefield of petrol-burning hot air balloons launched in celebration by the people. A firework, bullet or party balloon with a petrol burner could have very easily ignited the hydrogen gas on board and caused an airship disaster. LZ 127 was unable to convert to the safer non-flammable helium gas, due to the USA controlling the world supply through its Helium Act of 1925. This caused international airship travel to end and LZ 127 was retired in 1937. It had made 590 flights and 144 sea crossings. In total it had carried over 13,000 passengers including a gorilla called Susie who was travelling from the Congo to America. What are the tax implications of your decisions? Recent events have taught us that none of us can predict the future but that at some point we will all become part of history. It can feel daunting to make the necessary steps to plan for what we would like to happen when we are no longer here but it is imperative that we all do so, for our own peace of mind and for the comfort of those that we leave behind. Making your wishes known whilst you’re still able to do so is the right thing to do for your loved ones and documenting your instructions in your Will is the only way to ensure that who you want to inherit when you pass away, actually does. It isn’t just your Will that needs arranging either. If you are the 1 in 4 of us who will lose capacity during your lifetime you are going to wish (and your family most certainly will) that you had arranged your Lasting Power of Attorney when you were still able to.
Some of the important things to consider when making your Will are who you would like to be your Executors and if required who will be your Trustees? Who you would like to inherit and when? What are the tax implications of your decisions?
If you do have an existing Will but it is over ten years old there is a good chance that it is out of date and no longer does everything that you want it to and if you have the old style Enduring Power of Attorney it would most likely be in your best interests to replace it with a Property and Finance LPA together with a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney. One thing is for sure, doing nothing is rarely the best course of action when it comes to Estate planning either from an Inheritance Tax point of view or for your own peace of mind. When arranging your Lasting Power of Attorney documents, you may just wish to appoint your attorneys and give them a ‘free rein’ to make decisions in your best interests, but with no specific instructions or guidelines. However, you may wish to leave guidelines regarding what kind of care you would like should it be required and put limits on spending, for example. You may also have specific instructions regarding life sustaining treatment. Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020

‘Epic Hit’ the Downs MTB off-road cycling event rescheduled for October... Test your endurance and raise funds for local hospice care.
Are you looking for a socially distanced
cycling challenge? Cycling fans will be pleased to hear that Hit the Downs MTB has been rescheduled for Sunday 11 October 2020, after the May event had to be postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Now in its fourth year, the off-road charity mountain bike challenge will see cyclists raising money for Worthing-based adults’ hospice, St Barnabas House whilst taking in some amazing views along the way. This year, steps have been taken to ensure you can enjoy the thrill of the ride, whilst maintaining social distancing throughout, with additional hygiene and safety measures to keep you safe. The stunning South Downs course will test riders with its multitude of climbs and rapid downhill descents. Participants will set off from Adur Recreational Ground in Shoreham-by-Sea and can choose from a cool 30km route or dare to take on the epic new 80km distance. Mark’s story – riding for St Barnabas House
and sadly passed away just a few weeks before the event.
Mark says: “It's a proper cycling event, up there with the best of them. The course is a good test whatever distance you take on. The scenery is stunning and the terrain a mix of everything the beautiful South Downs have to offer, from river paths to open rolling fields with some tough climbs thrown in for good measure.
“Raising the money for St Barnabas was a small way to say thank you to them for the wonderful and compassionate way they helped and cared for mum and our family at the end of her life. I couldn't do the job St Barnabas do but I can cycle, so it was my way of doing something positive in remembering my mum.” Why not make 2020 your year to Hit the Downs? Visit www.stbh.org.uk/hit-thedowns-mtb to register or find out more.
Mark Tyler, 55 from Upper Beeding, was the highest St Barnabas House Hit the Downs fundraiser at the event last year with a total of £2,150. He challenged himself to the 60km route in memory of his mother, Angela Tyler, who was cared for by the hospice Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020

I’m currently working from home during the lockdown with my 2 little helpers, Benny and Frankie who are both resuce French Bulldogs. My main areas of expertise are; Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Prepaid Funeral plans and Probate. It has always been my mission to bring to everyday folk the same protection opportunities that the rich and famous have had for generations. I achieve this as follows: 1. All of my advice is free at all times – you only pay when you engage me to work for you. 2. I offer exceptional value for money – Wills from £29.99 - 2 Lasting Powers of Attorney with an advance directive including vat and all Office of the Public Guardian fees just £495 - Pre-paid funeral plans from just £9 per week – Trusts from just £199 and I conduct probate for just 1.75% of the estate value plus vat. 3. I am 100% transparent with my pricing and how I work at all times. Many people are concerned about: 1. Living with partners but not being married. 2. Having to use their homes to pay for care fees in the future. 3. How much their families may need to pay in probate and inheritance tax fees. 4. Protecting their children if they leave everything to a spouse and the spouse then remarries after their death. 5. How to ensure their children will not lose half of their inheritance if they divorced after inheriting. 6. How to protect grandchildren or vulnerable beneficiaries.
I am able to deliver solutions that are 100% legally effective in overcoming all of these problems and many more besides. To help with fees I am also able to offer guaranteed interest free credit without the need for any credit checks to make protecting your family more affordable. Reflections Sometimes a reflected image can be more interesting than a straight, factual scene. Mirrors, shop windows, still rivers and even puddles can reflect, distort and abstract the
reality. They can invert or refract, mystify, amuse, confuse and intrigue.
In these articles that I have been writing for a year now, I have often used the word ‘creative’ to describe various ways in which you can add a certain edge to your photographs to take them from a recording of reality to a fine art representation ofsomething that could go unseen for most people.
Reflections are an appropriation of reality. They may not tell the whole story, they may deceive. If those pictures are then converted to black and white, this can remove the reality even more. Monochrome can simplify. Colour can sometimes distract. A bright splash of colour in a photograph tends to draw the eye of the viewer, perhaps to an area of the photograph that is not important to the overall story. Reds and oranges re often offenders in the distraction department. Take for example a sports picture of a footballer in an all blue kit scoring a goal. The photographer is recording that event and the viewer is expected to look directly at that moment of sporting triumph in order to instantly understand the story. However, if an opponent in bright red is just behind, perhaps even out of focus, the eye of the viewer can automatically be drawn towards the brightest colour. This can deaden the impact of the image. It means that the viewer has to scan around the picture area to take in the ‘main event’, distracted y something which is only incidental to the story. Photographers have many tools at their disposal to alter colour. To suppress it, to exaggerate it, saturate it or remove it altogether. Likewise with monochrome, the tones can be manipulated to emphasise
Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020
the areas of importance as decided by the photographer, the artist.
These can be complex tools such as Photoshop and Lightroom or simpler editing tools and filters on smart phones. The choice is yours and this is all part of the creative process. When photographing a reflection you may choose to include yourself or you may choose to remain out of the picture but be aware of including yourself by accident
and then being disappointed at the result later. As always, to practice the technique take plenty of images. Take your time to explore promising situation. In the past I have occasionally realised that a shop window is providing photo opportunities and after a couple of quick shots I have entered the shop to explain what I’m doing and to show the initial results. This is usually met with some confusion and surprise but always with interest and co-operation and an Winvitation to continue now that they realise I am a harmless idiot !
It pays to avoid upsetting anyone. Photographs are everywhere if you look carefully enough so if someone objects to what you are doing, just move on. Chances are you’ll find something more interesting just around the corner. Your Local Lions Club... The Lions Year is from 1st July – 30th June so the year 2020/2021 started as the previous year ended – in a strange new ‘normal’ world. Since March, the Lions had not been able to hold any events, collections, meetings or even the Mane(!) event, the Donkey Derby. However, they were able to pay for a much needed Mobile Handwash Station for the Multiple Sclerosis Centre in Southwick and other small donations already reported. Mayberry Garden Centre had also informed them that due to Covid restrictions, they would not be able to have the Santa’s Grotto this year. They did, however, present a cheque for over £3000 from the previous year from card payments for the grotto and the takings from the sale of books they sell on behalf of the Lions. This was presented by manager Mark Brumfitt to Lions’ Presidents Pearl Boyce from Adur East Lions and Lisa Dilloway from Brighton Lions. At the beginning of each Lions year the incoming President can hold an event to mark the start of their Presidential Year. This is usually a tea or similar. As this was an opportunity for the first meet-up since lockdown, President Pearl decided to hold a Celebration in aid of Canine Partners’ 30th Birthday. Cheese, Wine and Olives flowed followed by the usual Cake including a gluten free cake donated by Hector’s Shed in Shoreham. Donations were received amounting to £300 including a 200 Club winners’ prize. It was a lovely afternoon in Buckingham Park by the Lions’ centenary oak tree attended by nearly all the members; a first outing for many. Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020

Men’s Health: It’s good to talk September is Urology Awareness Month. Organised by The Urology Foundation, this month aims to raise awareness of urological disease as well as raise money to fund vital research and training into these diseases. It is estimated that 1 in 2 of us will be affected by a urology condition in our lifetime. Our urology health is vital to our quality of life. If you’re a guy who waits until something is seriously wrong before going to the doctor, you’re not alone. The same can be said when it comes to raising awareness or money for cancer, the ladies are pipping guys to the post. So is there a solution? As consultant urologist Barnaby Chappell explains we need to start talking about it first. As consultant urologist Barnaby Chappell points out, it’s not be the easiest thing to talk to your doctor about but early detection along with raising awareness in Men’s Health is important. “I can understand why men shy away from issues with their urinary tract, erectile dysfunction or prostate but, like most illness or disease, we need to know more about these problems, and although the more we search for them, the more cases we find, it does help us get closer to helping people live longer with something like prostate cancer. With the PSA test for example, we can identify who might be at risk of prostate cancer and monitor them accordingly. The earlier we spot symptoms, the greater the chance of finding curative solutions for them.”
The consultant added that symptoms don’t always mean bad news and that if men visit their doctor early on, they might save themselves a whole lot of worry. “Many of the signs that people associate with the prostate can be harmless. For example, problem urinating can be caused by the enlarging of the prostate gland, but that does not necessarily mean cancer. Also, erectile dysfunction can actually Inside Shoreham & Southwick September 2020
have more to do with the heart and can precede heart conditions that may present themselves in a few years time. So it’s definitely worthwhile being examined to manage, prevent or treat that.”
Despite more than 40,000 new cases of prostate cancer being diagnosed each year, the disease is still rarely talked about in public, compared with something like breast cancer. As Mr Chappell puts it: “Women are way ahead of us in terms of raising awareness for their own cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer. Men are lagging behind simply because of a reluctance to talk about these problems. It’s an issue that is getting better. Now, for example, we have ‘Movember’ when men are encouraged to grow a mustache for a month to help highlight male cancers. But there’s still a fair way to go. The biggest challenge is to not only to get men to spot symptoms, or to see their GP, but to talk about it openly. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.” Barnaby Chappell Consultant Urological Surgeon works for Western Sussex Hospitals Trust & has a private clinic at Goring Hall Hospital near Worthing. Embracing a Positive Body Image.. Mel Maelo, hypnotherapist at SOC, explores the impact of body image in our everyday lives. Most of us are never happy with ur bodies – our hair is too thin, thick, straight or curly. Our nose is too big, small or wide. Our lips are too thin or thick. Our bum is too big or small. We are too fat, too thin, we don’t like our skin... When we hit midlife, our bodies begin another transition and no longer do what they used to do. Hormones change causing our bodies and emotions to fluctuate in so many unexpected ways. The four aspects of body image are:
The way you SEE yourself. This is your perception of how you look, which can be real or imagined.
The way you FEEL about the way you look. How your perception is impacting your emotions, how does it make you feel? For example, if you had to stand naked or semi-naked in front of a full length mirror looking at your body, what emotions would you feel? Happy, unhappy, disgusted, depressed, guilt, shame?
The THOUGHTS and BELIEFS you hold about your body Perhaps you have a limiting belief such as ‘All the women/men in our family are big/thin, tall/short, so I may as well just accept it’. True, there may be a genetic component, however, this belief may stop you from addressing what changes could be possible. The THINGS YOU DO in relation to the way you look. Do you look in the mirror and think ‘I cannot wear this, it makes me look …’? Perhaps you choose to only wear a certain colour or style or are reluctant to take part in certain activities or sports, due to negative perceptions about your body. If you recognise any of the issues raised here, I would be very happy to help you move forward, using hypnotherapy and other therapeutic techniques, to embracing a positive body image.
To book an appointment with Mel, please contact SOC on 01273 567654 or info@ shorehamosteo.co.uk. SOC also offers face-to-face or online osteopathy appointments see www.shorehamosteo.co.uk for more information.

Historical Shoreham and Southwick...
These towers were erected in the Western arm of Shoreham harbour in 1917.
32
It has never been disclosed what their use was to be, the most popular theory at the time being that they were intended for the blocking of Channel harbours in German hands. After the end of the 1914-18 War, one of the towers was towed to a position off Portsmouth, where it still is – 1954. The other lingered on in its original position for some years, and was taken down and removed in 1924/25. To advertise call 01273 452065 www.insideshoreham.com
