Selecting the correct Footwear.. This month Karen our Podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea talks about the importance of Footwear...
Footwear is a common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are “acceptable” changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Inside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
Quick tips to remember when shoe shopping Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest Buy the right shoe for the purpose If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/ orthotics) Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly. Ensure they fit correctly Contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk 5

Sussex County Croquet Club.... 2020 has been a strange year for us all what with the Coronavirus Pandemic and the restictions placed on our general lives and our course sport. Thankfully the game I play - Croquet was one of the first to be allowed when lockdown began to be lifted.
Sussex County Croquet Club tucked away in Kingston Lane, Southwick is the perfect sport both for competitive and social play and is made for social distancing. One of the leading clubs in the country, we can boast 11 pristine lawns thanks to Ben and his team at Complete Turf Care and a beautiful 5 acre site to play the game on. With 23 British Isles Singles Championships and 7 World Singles Championships (over both codes of the game) Reg Bamford in his victory speech after last seasons Golf Croquet British Isles win described the Sussex County Club as his favourite venue, complimenting Ben and the club on having what he believes are the finest lawns in the world. We are a club that has a fine reputation for its warm and friendly atmosphere welcoming players of all abilities from complete beginners to internationals. The club offers free taster sessions comprising of four free lessons to see if the game is something for you and if you like it we have all the qualified coaches to assist in your development being the home also of the Croquet Academy. In a normal season (with no social distancing restrictions etc) we boast a members bar and kitchen where Linda and her team get compliments from visiting Inside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
players and spectators for the lovely meals they prepare during the summer months (not forgetting the superb home made cakes). When coming along for the first time you will be introduced to Golf Croquet (a simple game to learn and play) but with the tactics and shots played by your opposition you will readily see why this form of the game is so very popular. A Golf Croquet match can last from about 15 minutes up to about an hour. The summer season runs from April until the end of September / early October but with the number of lawns we have we are lucky enough to be able to play for 12 months of the year (yes including Christmas day if you want to). There is nothing better than wrapping up warm on a crisp sunny winters morning and popping down to Southwick for a knock.

Nominate a family in your area in need of a free holiday Do you know a family, NHS or frontline worker in your area that has been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and needs a break? As part of the nation’s emotional and wellbeing recovery from the pandemic, the national charity YHA (England & Wales) wants to give away free holidays to families in your area.
The breaks have been funded from donations from members of the public to YHA’s Project90 appeal which was launched as part of the youth hostelling charity’s 90 anniversary celebrations. Donations to date will enable YHA to fund a total of 400 much-needed family breaks across England and Wales.
Conscious that fewer people can now afford a break because of the pandemic, YHA particularly wants to hear from families that have been financially impacted in the crisis and are in need of some quality family time together. Family time together on holiday is more important than ever. In a survey* conducted by the 90 year old charity, it was found that more than three quarters (77%) of parents believe that an annual family holiday is important in order to spend more time with their family (78%), however 12% of survey respondents had not been able to take a family holiday at all in the last three years.
While the free breaks are being rolled out, fundraising for YHA’s Project90 campaign continues. YHA hopes to raise a further £120,000 to give breaks to 500 more families in need of rest, recuperation or spending quality time away together. The breaks are available at YHA’s network of youth hostels in England and Wales in both coastal and rural locations. Inside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
The 153-strong network of youth hostels, which were closed during lockdown, re-opened on the 17 July with a pledge from the charity to play a key role in the recovery of society by helping people reconnect with each other, the outdoors, nature, culture and heritage. James Blake, Chief Executive of YHA (England & Wales) explained: “The pandemic has put enormous financial and emotional strain on many people and has left a number of NHS and frontline workers and families suffering hardship. A break away together can make all the difference to these families and be an important part of their wellbeing recovery. It will give them valuable time together to reconnect in the outdoors as well as have fun in the process. “I very much hope that people will get in touch with us and either put themselves forward for a break or nominate a family that they feel would benefit from spending some quality time together.”
If you know of a family that would benefit from a short break away, let YHA know at https://getinvolved.yha.org.uk/breaks-for-keyworkers/. To donate to YHA’s Project90 campaign and help it reach even more families, please visit getinvolved.yha.org.uk/fundraising/appeals/ project90/

Shoreham Port invests £2m in UK-built forklift trucks Shoreham Port has invested in a fleet of 35 new Yale forklift trucks to support its timber logistics operation that is estimated to handle up to 20% of all UK timber imports. The £2m contract is the largest ever for supplier Solent Forklift Trucks, part of Forkway Group. “We will discharge more than 100 packs of timber per hour from this ship,” says Tom Rawlins, Manager – Operations & Training, standing on the quayside at Shoreham Port next to a ship from Scandinavia delivering more than 3,000 packs of varied length timber up to 6m long. “The forklift truck fleet is essential to ensure our Port Operatives can turn every ship around efficiently.” The Port is the largest timber handling port on the south coast of England with extensive experience and equipment for timber handling. Last year alone over 450,000m3 of timber was handled and stored in either the 47,000m2 of dedicated, modern dry warehousing or quayside paved open storage. “Our Yale trucks pick up the timber packs as they are discharged, transport them to the barcode area and then onto storage across the 2.5km length of the Port,2,say Tom. The 35 new Yale Veracitor GDP55VX trucks provide up to 5.5 tonne lift capacity. says Tom. “We concluded that the Port’s processes were already at optimum levels, but there was more that could be done to the trucks thanks to a new Inside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
generation of safety technologies available,” Tom said. “Pedestrian segregation and the safety of colleagues is crucial, so every truck has left and right red perimeter lights, a rear blue spot light, two cab mounted work LED lights and mast mounted LEDs fitted along with a white noise reversing buzzer and an operating beacon. “The trucks are a perfect size for our yard thanks to their physical dimensions, ” says Tom. The new Yale lift trucks are user friendly with Accutouch™ mini levers and feature Load Sensing Hydraulics for responsiveness and reduced fuel consumption. Most of the timber that comes through Shoreham’s lock gates has been shipped from the sawmills of Scandinavia and the Baltic countries of Latvia and Russia. The Port’s unique Track-A-Pack stock control system allows customers to view ‘real time’ information about their stock. “We are very proud of the part that Shoreham Port has to play in the UK timber supply chain and the Yale forklift trucks are an essential part of the journey providing efficiency, reliability and excellent environmental performance,” says Tom. The Best of Both Worlds. I’ve only met a handful of people who aren’t fussed if they will have to pay for their own later life care either by selling their home or through savings. I have however, met countless people who don’t want to pay for care as they feel that they’ve worked all their lives and paid enough into the pot to be properly looked after if they ever need to be. Neither opinion is more valid than the other but sometimes it helps to know what the actual figures involved in deciding who will, and who won’t, have to pay before deciding which camp you fall into.
The reality of who will and who won’t have to selffund is currently quite straightforward. Your capital
What you will have to pay
Over £23,250
You must pay full fees (known as being selffunding).
Between £14,250 and £23,250
You contribute from income included in the means test, such as pensions, plus an assumed, or ‘tariff’ income based on your capital between £14,250 and £23,250. The council pay the remaining cost of your care.
Less than £14,250
You no longer pay a ‘tariff’ income based on your capital, but you must continue paying from income included in the means test. The council pay the remaining cost of your care.

If the idea of your Estate being used to fund care leaves you feeling aggrieved then you’ll be pleased to know that by using a Life Interest Trust in your Will you can protect half of your property for your beneficiaries. It works by leaving your half of your property to the second level beneficiaries rather than your partner but with a Life Interest in the property. This means that your partner can carry on unrestrictedly living in the property or sell it to downsize for example, essentially acting as though they own the entire property. The person with the Life Interest needs take precedence over the beneficiaries until they die, permanently leave the property or until otherwise stipulated within your Will. Nobody can force out the person with the Life Interest! Life Interest Trusts work very well and unlike other ‘Property Trusts’, they are not considered to be deliberate deprivation. It is also a very good safety net against your children failing to inherit due to second marriage and are therefore sometimes referred to as a ‘Bloodline Will’. They can also be used if you are the sole owner of your property but want your partner to be able to stay in the property but not inherit it after you’ve gone.

Hospice Care Week Show you support during Hospice Care Week... This October, St Barnabas House is joining with hospices across the UK to celebrate Hospice Care Week. Taking place from 5-11 October 2020, Hospice Care Week is about flying the flag for the compassionate care that UK hospices provide, whilst addressing the misconceptions and fears many people have about them. It’s also your chance to get involved with your local hospice.
Following the Hospice Care Week theme, ‘This is What it Takes’, St Barnabas will be taking to social media to provide you with a look behind the scenes at all of the work that goes into funding and providing free hospice care to over 1,786 local people each year. As well as hearing directly from patients and families, there will also be opportunities to ask the care team questions about the hospice and send messages of support. Pauls story
Thanks to the support of the local community St Barnabas has been able to continue supporting patients like Paul Price throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
In July 2019, Paul was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After hospital treatment ended, he was told nothing more could be done, and in January he was referred to St Barnabas House for palliative care. “It’s hard to put my feelings into words,” says Paul. “But when I came to the Day Hospice for the first time it was like being discovered again. Everyone cared so much. They weren’t just looking at my notes and my medication. For the first time in ages, I was asked, ‘how are you?’ Inside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
and just those few words made such a difference. I feel like I can ask the team anything and I’m so grateful they’ve taken the time to get to know me as a person.
“You see the same people all the time and they get to know you and what you’re going through,” explains Paul. “I really missed that connection when the Day Hospice was closed for a bit at the height of the pandemic, so it’s nice to be getting that back now. We’ve been doing activities – exercises, playing games, as well as just spending time chatting. “It also helps my family because they know there are other people who can support us. When it’s just them I think they can feel quite vulnerable. So I’m sure it relieves their burden a bit, knowing I can come here and talk to other people. I love it here.” There are lots of ways you can support St Barnabas House during Hospice Care Week and beyond, including fundraising, making a donation, volunteering, visiting one of the 12 charity shops or leaving a gift in your Will. UNSAFE route for children to walk to their catchment school? A group of Shoreham parents are working together to lobby West Sussex County Council to reconsider their classification of the A27 as it is an UNSAFE route for children to walk to their catchment school.
Due to demand on secondary school places in the area, The Sir Robert Woodard Academy (SRWA) is now a dual catchment school for Shoreham (and the surrounding area) children. Fortunately, it’s a really great school but is located on the Lancing/ Sompting border approx. 3 miles from Shoreham, with no dedicated transport provision. The group, Shoreham Safe Route to School, have been in talks with WSCC, SRWA, local and county cllrs. and Tim Loughton MP to try to get this matter resolved. “We have been repeatedly assured that a resolution will be found as stakeholders recognise the current provision to and from school is not fit for purpose. The walking route is not safe for children to walk and it terrifies me to think of what could happen along there. However, WSCC and Tim Loughton MP have fallen silent as far as a resolution. What will it take for them to put our children’s safety first?” said parent Serena Costello. If you currently live 3 miles + away from the entrance of SRWA, WSCC will provide your child with the cost of travel from Shoreham and surrounding areas (the unreliable 19a Compass bus, or a train to Lancing station 1 mile from SRWA). However, if you live just 1cm under the 3 mile cut off (calculated by WSCC via the A27 dual carriageway), then WSCC will NOT provide travel costs and expect children to make their own way. The route along the A27 dual carriageway is curInside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
rently deemed safe by WSCC for children to walk unaccompanied (using national guidelines). Conversely, WSCC have assessed the same route along the A27 as ‘hostile’ for cyclists, so the group cannot understand why WSCC won’t reclassify the A27 walking
route to ensure the safety of our children. Now faced with the Monks Farm development along that stretch, Shoreham and Southwick children are also going to have to navigate heavy plant, roadworks and disruption on their ‘safe’ walk to school. Some of these kids are 11 years old.
In the meantime, SRWA have had to provide - from their own budgets - a coach service starting this September to transport children from Shoreham and surrounding area to school. However, this can only accommodate year 7 & 8 students, in the first instance, as demand is understandably high, and although heavily subsidised by the school, will cost parents £120 per child, per term. Some families have more than one child at the school and can simply not afford this. Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils are still left with the prospect of walking along the A27. As we know, school budgets are tight and that money could be needed elsewhere. WSCC has discretionary powers to overrule the national guidelines and deem the A27 UNSAFE for our children’s journey to school. This would change everything and result in more Shoreham and Southwick children being entitled to funded travel. Even if this was brought in as a temporary measure until the Monks Farm development - with its planned safer walking and cycling route incorporated - was completed, the group think this would be the right thing to do. Additionally, if WSCC provided their own funded bus provision, it might even save the County Council money as one dedicated school
bus service would be cheaper than individual subsidies on other means of transport.
The group have started an online petition to get this debated at County level. Please offer your support by signing here: https:// www.change.org/p/west-sussex-countycouncil-safe-travel-to-school-for-our-children

October Brighton Photo Fringe October 3rd sees the launch of Brighton Photo Fringe. The Photo Fringe supports emerging talents referred to as ‘lens-based artists’ meaning stills photographers and film makers. It also features talks by the artists themselves. It is mainly project based but many stand alone photographs will also be displayed.
The theme for 2020 is ’Take/Make’. This is intended to inspire the entrants to Take a Photo, Take Part or Take Action to Make A Mark, Make a Stand or Make a Difference. The idea of producing artistic work to a theme can ease us out of our comfort zone and challenge our thoughts and communication skills. It can make us consider the world around us and challenge our views.
Photo Fringe happens every two years but due to covid-19 restrictions, will mainly feature online events although there will be some ‘live’ exhibitions. One such exhibition will feature 47 members of Brighton and Hove Camera Club, including myself. The exhibition space is on Brighton Beach in front of the Grand Hotel and has been there for 4 years. The photos will be changed at the end of September for the duration of October Photo Fringe and beyond. Our exhibition showcases individual responses to the situation we find ourselves in in 2020.
Some photographers have chosen to remember how vibrant the city can be, with its festivals, throngs of visitors and gaudy colours. Others have chosen to reflect on the ity as a hub for political
activism while yet others have emphasised those aspects of the city which invite a calmer and more contemplative response. We hope that by presenting a diverse view of our city to our fellow residents and visitors alike we can bring hope and inspiration for a better and safer future. Photographs on this page are of previous exhibitions that we have mounted in this wonderful space and my own entry for October.
I do hope you will be able to see it in a socially distanced and safe way, outdoors in the fresh sea air.
Brighton Photo Fringe is supported by the Arts Council, England, Brighton and Hove Council and Adur and Worthing Council. Online events can be found at

Your Local Lions Club... Lion David Sluys has only been a Lion for just over a year but has certainly got stuck into the ethos of Lions: ‘We serve’ and ‘Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion’. Here is a report from him on what he has been doing: “I joined Adur East Lions last summer and have recently become the Childhood Cancer Projects Coordinator for the South East Region. I am working on a number of ideas and planning events throughout the district to raise significant sums of money for cancer charities, which have struggled during the current Covid crisis. Sadly, my own great niece lost her battle against a brain tumour recently so I understand just how important this is. I completed the Worthing half-marathon in January 2019 to raise money for LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal) and our main project to support LIBRA in 2021 is the Fun Run in East Grinstead, a flat race, run mainly on Bridle paths (provisional date is the September 2021). To raise money for BTR ( BrainTumor Research), I am hoping to enlist the support of local golf clubs and their

members in planning a charity gold days. I would love to talk to golfers and help them plan an event at their own club so please contact me. We have made a provisional arrangement with worthing Golf Club for 27th May, next year. Leslie Howard Leslie Howard Steiner was born on the 3rd of April 1893. He was the son of Ferdinand Steiner, a Hungarian immigrant who had married London born Lillian Blumberg in 1891. At the age of 20, Leslie’s ambition was to be an actor and his uncle, Wilfred Noy Blumberg, a film director, encouraged him. On the 20th of December 1913 Leslie played the character of Wilson Smith in the play ‘Deception’. It was performed in Stanley Hall in Upper Norwood London. Despite giving an acclaimed performance, Leslie’s father disapproved and insisted Leslie take a job as a bank clerk. When the First World War began in 1914, Ferdinand changed the family name from ‘Steiner’ to ‘Stainer’ to avoid the suspicion directed at anyone who sounded Germanic. The family also stopped using German as a first language and Ferdinand Steiner became ‘Frank Stainer’. Leslie’s Uncle Wilfred Noy dropped the name Blumberg and as a director made the 1914 war film The Heroine of Mons starring Leslie in his first screen role. Leslie joined the army, still using the surname Steiner and was commissioned as a cavalry officer. In May 1916 he was sent home from the trenches suffering shellshock and then discharged. He became a theatre actor appearing in a succession of hit plays. In 1919 he appeared in Just A Wife Or Two playing Victor Hamilton on Brighton’s West Pier. In 1920, he placed a notice in the London Gazette to say he be would now be known as Leslie Howard having abandoned the name Steiner.

In the 1920’s, Leslie Howard starred in a succession of hit plays on New York’s Broadway. The play Her Cardboard Lover ran there in 1927 then transferred to London in 1928. The 1929 play Berkeley Square, in which Leslie Howard played Peter Standish transferred from London to New York in 1930.
In the thirties Leslie Howard was a Hollywood movie star while still performing in New York Theatres. In 1932 he appeared as Tom Collier in The Animal Kingdom at the Broadhurst Theatre, New York. A movie adaptation of the play was released in the same year. In 1933 he reprised the role of Peter Standish in the movie version of Berkeley Square and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He played Sir Percy Blakeney in the 1934 movie The Scarlet Pimpernel.
In 1935 Leslie Howard appeared in the play The Petrified Forest at the Broadhurst Theatre, New York and the film version was released in 1936. In 1938, in England he played Professor Henry Higgins in the film Pygmalion and was nominated again for Best Actor. Returning to Hollywood, his most famous role was as Ashley Wilkes in the 1939 movie Gone with the Wind. At the start of the Second World War,

How are you feeling? Shona Campbell, Acupuncturist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, discusses ways to help you feel more balanced emotionally. This is such a loaded question at this time! The uncertainties we face, coupled with changes in home and work circumstances, are contributing to feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. My patients are reporting insomnia, poor memory, anxiety attacks, and low mood. These emotions if left untreated can become chronic and show up as exhaustion, aches and pains, and illness. Now more than ever, we need to invest time in our wellbeing. This is a gentle reminder to take care of yourself! Try and build these activities into your next week as much as you can.
Self care This can include setting time aside for rest, switching off devices, taking part in activities you love, eating well, spending time with loved ones, and prioritising your wellbeing. I have no information about when these photographs were taken, but my guess is 1900 or thereabouts. On my first visit to Hove in 1916, I stayed in Erroll Road and regularly crossed the canal to the beach, by this ferry, which saved a very long walk. (James Gray) 32

The Lamp Still Burns (1943)
Leslie Howard was in neutral Portugal in 1943 where international wartime spies plus Allied and German airlines operated beside each other. He was killed when Luftwaffe fighters shot down his plane over the sea off the coast of Spain. He was flying in a Douglas DC-3 Dakota passenger plane called the Ibis.
The plane was infamous for its escape from Schiphol airport, Holland in May 1940 during the German invasion. The Ibis had flown to Shoreham Airport where it had been impounded along with other planes of the Dutch airline KLM. The Ibis and its crew had joined BOAC airline to run a well- publicised air service between Britain and Portugal. However in an unwise move the British Government had ordered civilian planes be painted in military camouflage. First Oberleutnant Herbert Hintze claimed that this led to the Luftwaffe misidentifying the Ibis, as an enemy aircraft rather than a neutral civilian airliner. Hintze’s pilots were furious that they’d shot it down in error.
Leslie Howard left Hollywood and returned to Britain. His parents Frank and Lillian Stainer were at this time living in the Meadway in Shoreham Beach’s bungalow town. Wilfred Noy had retired and was living in Worthing. During the war, Leslie Howard directed, produced, narrated and acted in British movies and propaganda films. His younger sister Irene Mary Howard, a casting director, worked with him on Pimpernel Smith (1941), In Which We Serve (1942), The Gentle Sex (1943) and Inside Shoreham & Southwick October 2020
German Command had not informed them of the scheduled flight. Hintze said if it had been known it was a civilian plane, the Ibis would have been forced to land in occupied France. Leslie Howard would have been discovered on board and captured. This might have revealed details of the mysterious ‘film lecture’ tour of Spain and Portugal he was returning from. It had included a secret meeting with the Spanish dictator, General Franco, to discuss Spain’s continued neutrality and not siding with Germany in the war. It was a meeting arranged by the actress Conchita Montenegro, Leslie Howard’s co-star in the 1931 film, Never the Twain Shall Meet, and it suggests he was in fact doing some top secret diplomatic work for Britain.
