Table tennis brought into hundreds of homes across Adur and Worthing. Wednesday, 07 October 2020. Hundreds of households across Adur and Worthing have been turning their dining tables into table tennis tables during the COVID pandemic, thanks to a donation of kits from Table Tennis England.
In total, 250 table tennis kits containing bats, balls and nets were distributed to households to enable families to enjoy physical activity during lockdown. The kits have been distributed to households by Adur & Worthing Councils via a number of partner organisations and local mutual aid groups.The distribution of table tennis kits forms part of an initiative called Ping! run by Table Tennis England and supported by Adur & Worthing Councils and Worthing Ping United to encourage more people to take up table tennis, and includes the installation of two new outdoor table tennis tables at Kitty’s Field in Worthing and two in Buckingham Park in Shoreham. There are now eight outdoor tables in Worthing - in Kitty’s Field, Homefield Park, Victoria Park and Beach House grounds and two in Adur in Buckingham Park.When the lockdown was announced, introducing limited opportunity for physical exercise, Table Tennis England launched its outreach scheme called Play at Home, specifically targeting those who were living alone, less able to engage in physical activity or shielding as a result of COVID-19. Cllr Dave Simmons, Adur District Councils’ Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing, said: “The feedback from families who have Inside Shoreham & Southwick November 2020
been playing table tennis at home has been really positive and we are encouraged both by how it has helped to support people to stay active during lockdown and be something that families can enjoy together.” Cllr Val Turner, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing, said: “Thanks to this innovative scheme, lots of people have discovered how fun table tennis can be. Now with lots more tables to play on in our parks and open spaces, I hope it will encourage many others to give it a go too.” Due to the COVID safety requirements, the Councils are unable to supply bats and balls for use at the outdoor tables and advise players to supply their own during this time. Adur Community Cafe.... Volunteer community group are feeding the Adur community – pay what you can afford community. A team of local volunteers are working to feed those in hunger need within the Adur. By teaming up with FareShare the team offer a hot meal and pudding every Sunday from St Julian’s Hall, from 4-5pm on “a pay what you can afford” model. The group are in the process of setting up as a community investment company (CIC) and all profits will be re-invested back into the CIC, to pay for equipment and supplies.
A group of ten, local volunteers of all ages (with a local chef) have started a community café & takeaway operating with the support of Father James (The Rector of Old Shoreham and Kingston Buci, to which belong the churches of St Giles, St Julian and St Nicolas) by using St Julian’s Hall, Rectory Road, Shoreham by Sea, BN43 6EB from 4-5pm, every Sunday. The café and takeaway have been set
up as a takeaway initially to tackle food poverty - driven by Covid redundancies, Inside Shoreham & Southwick November 2020
those self-isolating (who may not have local support) and families impacted by increased food budget spend and rising food prices. The long-term aim is to create a sit-down eating experience, with an offer of inter-generational relationship building, inspirational talks, music and even pingpong games!
The team have recently secured funding via a Crowdfunder and Wates Group’s community fund, to the value of £500. A spokesperson for the café said “We have seen an exponential rise in foodbank use and with the support of the Father James and a team of volunteers we are pleased to offer hot food every Sunday. We heard of people to proud to say they were hungry, due to a lack of funds and that’s why we offer the pay what you can afford model, to remove that issue as a concern. Our meals our healthy and full of protein and vitamins and the customer feedback has been very positive so far” Father James said “It’s a privilege to be in a position to support Adur Community Cafe, a much-needed service for the area in these times. I hope that it will become a focal point of the community and a place of meeting and walking the journey of life together for a little bit.”

Five Benefits of Volunteering Hello and welcome to the Community Works Volunteer Centre.
Community Works is a charity connecting community organisations, people and businesses to build a better community for everyone. Every year, our Volunteer Centre helps hundreds of local people find a rewarding volunteer role. I’m Carole Claridge, the Volunteering Adviser for Adur. I live in Shoreham and am a volunteer myself. If you’ve thought about volunteering but don’t know where to start – get in touch, I’d love to help. “I enjoy it” was the simple response of 93% of volunteers surveyed by the NCVO in 2019 when asked what they got out of volunteering. That’s great to hear. However, enjoyment is just one of the many benefits of volunteering. Here are five more to inspire you..¦ 1. Helping others. The most obvious benefit to volunteering, and the reason behind most people’s decision to volunteer, is the positive impactit has on someone else’s life and on the community. Whether you’re serving food in a homeless shelter, befriending the vulnerable through regular phone calls, assisting with administration at a community food bank, or mentoring a young person, your actions have a direct positive effect on someone, in addition to supporting the work of charities and strengthening the local community. 2. The feel-good factor. In 2008 the London School of Economics carried out a study into the relationship Inside Shoreham & Southwick November 2020
between volunteering and well-being. They discovered that volunteering contributes to happiness levels: the more people volunteer, the happier they are. Why? It’s the feel-good factor. Volunteers feel they are making a difference, they have a sense of purpose and are making meaningful connections: this increases feelings of self-worth and boosts their self-esteem. Sam, a volunteer trustee for Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur agrees. “I always suffered from a lack of self-esteem and ‘Imposter Syndrome’. However, being a trustee has boosted my confidence. It’s an environment in which I can share my knowledge and witness a positive effect, which in turn gives me the confidence that I am good at what I do.” Many studies reveal a positive link between volunteering and improved mental health: confirming that volunteering can help reduce stress, anxiety, and combat depression. 3. Physical benefits. It’s not just your mental health that is positively affected through volunteering, various studies show that people who regularly volunteer are less likely to develop high blood pressure “the reduced continued on page 10

stress levels will help with this - and actually live longer than non-volunteers. 4. Boost your career prospects. Whether you’re just beginning your career journey or have been working for several years, volunteering looks great on your CV and is an excellent way of standing out in a competitive job market. It can offer valuable work experience if you’re looking to enter a specific industry or switch careers. More generally, volunteering can help develop your communication and teamwork skills that are all important in the workplace. It shows potential employers that you can be pro-active, use your own initiative and have a sense of altruism and commitment, which are all attractive characteristics in an employee. 5. Meet new people.
It’s a great - and fun - way to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures, and of different ages that you may not have otherwise interacted with. If you feel isolated or lonely, volunteering offers a sense of community, and if you volunteer for a cause that you’re passionate about, you’re likely to meet like-minded people with similar interests. Ropetackle receives lifeline grant from Government’s Culture Recovery Fund Ropetackle Arts Centre has been awarded £56,000 as part of the government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) to help face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure they have a sustainable future, the Culture Secretary has announced today. Ropetackle is one of 1,385 cultural and
creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support. Some £257 million of investment has been announced today as part of the very first round of the Culture Recovery Fund grants programme being administered by Arts Council England. Further rounds of funding in the cultural and heritage sector are due to be announced over the coming weeks. Ropetackle chairman, Martin Allen, said: “We are delighted to receive this support and recognition, particularly, of our value to the local community as well as our standing in the regional cultural map. This grant will help us navigate this difficult period and to ensure that we are well placed to return to a full programme when circumstances allow.” Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “This funding is a vital boost for the theatres, music venues, museums and cultural organisations that form the soul of our nation. It will protect these special places, save jobs and help the culture sector’s recovery. Inside Shoreham & Southwick November 2020

“These places and projects are cultural beacons the length and breadth of the country. This unprecedented investment in the arts is proof this government is here for culture, with further support to come in the days and weeks ahead so that the culture sector can bounce back strongly.”
Chair, Arts Council England, Sir Nicholas Serota, said: “Theatres, museums, galleries, dance companies and music venues bring joy to people and life to our cities, towns and villages. This lifechanging funding will save thousands of cultural spaces loved by local communities and international audiences. Further funding is still to be announced and we are working hard to support our sector during these challenging times.” Ropetackle is currently running an interim programme, including films, childrens’ events, comedy and music, in line with the latest government guidelines, and is once again partnering Shoreham’s acclaimed Wordfest literary festival which runs for 6 weeks starting 23rd October…

Remember your loved ones and support your local hospice... In 2014, my wife Susan was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. It turned our lives upside down. Susan had two surgeries and intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy. After that she picked up a bit. It was a ‘second wind’ for her and we made the most if it. But it wasn’t long before she started to go downhill. She started to find daily living more and more difficult and I became her permanent carer. To be honest, I was struggling. That’s when the doctor referred us to St Barnabas House. The care we got from them was wonderful right from the start. Susan started going to the Day Hospice. It was a very happy time for her when she visited. I soon realised I couldn’t carry on giving Susan the care she needed at home, so she went into St Barnabas for full time support. During the four weeks Susan was at the hospice, she received the most wonderful care. Nothing was too much trouble. What’s amazing is that, in that whole time, all the care and support we received was provided absolutely free of charge.

It was a dignified and appropriate way for Susan to slip away from life. From her diagnosis to the time she died was pretty much a year. She died in the loving arms of St Barnabas in comfort and peace. Before Susan became ill, I didn’t know how important our local hospice is. I now realise how lucky our community is to have St Barnabas there to care for us and our loved ones when we need it. Autumn Alternatives For some photographers, this time of year offers an opportunity to capture Autumn colours in the landscape. Local opportunities for this are endless as we
have the South Downs on our doorstep and formal gardens such as Sheffield Park, Nymans and Borde Hill a short distance away.I understand why some photographers are drawn to this but personally it is not thegenre of photography that attracts me.
So what does Autumn mean to me ? It means that the sun is lower in the sky, throwing long shadows.I’ve written about shadows and their importance for photography on many occasions.For me, they often work better when images are converted to black and white butthey can add interest to colour images too. There are three examples here, one where the light was behind me on Worthing Pier.

In each case the shadow is very important in the image, creating a lead in for the colour shot on Worthing Pier, emphasising the light and giving foreground interest to the basketball court on Hastings seafront and giving abstract patterns and repetition of shapes to the third photograph taken in Paris.
In each case the length of the shadows is created by the sun being low in the sky. You don’t require a DSLR camera and Photoshop to convert to monochrome or to enhance the shadows. Most smartphones offer filters to do this or you can download post processing apps. If the shadows are strong enough you may not need to enhance them, a straight shot may be all that is required, or a slight adjustment to the exposure to emphasise the dark tones of the shadows. Dark, monochrome photographs can be very dramatic, atmospheric and full of impact.

These are then sent to Chichester Lions Club which processes tens of thousands of recycled spectacles each year. All donations are examined by a team of Lions and other volunteers in the recycling workshop. The glasses are then sent for grading and sorting to Medico France in Le Havre, and sent on to eye camps (clinics) throughout the world. These camps allow people who cannot afford or access eye care to get the glasses and treatment they need. eg Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Nigeria and Nepal. Volunteers from “Unite for Sight†charity are also given spectacles to take with them when they are working in different countries Scrap metal salvaged from broken and unsuitable spectacles raises funds which support the sorting operation and enable Chichester Lions Club to give financial support to eye related projects in the UK and overseas. Tulip Land in Shoreham and the Moveable Hothouses In 1913 the horticulturist Arthur Pullen-Burry discovered that the soil on a strip of beach between Shoreham and Lancing matched the soil type of the tulip beds of Holland. It was a mixture of clay and sand so fine it could not be blown about by the wind. Arthur decided to grow tulips there on the beach and created a 30-acre riotous landscape of rich floral colour. It was said that when one turned away from the tulips a person went colour blind and that even green grass looked black to the observer. Arthur had been born in Sompting and his father John Pullen-Burry of Rectory House was a market gardener. The family business passed to his sons and they grew the largest range of fruit and vegetables in the country, and even planted tobacco to make insecticide. The reason for their success was because Arthur Pullen-Burry had invented what was the nicknamed the ‘architect’s nightmare’. This was a moveable hothouse, for which the patent was applied for with the USA Patent Office on the 30th of June 1913 and granted in October the same year. Arthur Pullen-Burry’s ‘peripatetic conservatory’ ran on rail tracks. It could be walked un-powered backwards and forwards so easily that it was reported an eight year-old boy could do it, simply by turning a wheel. “It is going to revolutionise market gardening,” Arthur told newspaper reporters. “It costs only 30 percent more Inside Shoreham & Southwick November 2020
than an ordinary glasshouse, and it is so simple that anyone can work it. When fruit or flowers are well established in the open, a few days forcing will bring them on wonderfully, and do no harm to the roots. You can’t dig up a plant and put it under glass with any success, but it is quite easy to leave the plant in its own ground and put glass temporarily over it.” Arthur gave a slide lecture entitled ‘The Efficient Movement Of Large Glass Structures And Its Economic Value, As Applied To Intensive Culture’, after the annual dinner of the Gardeners Royal Benevolent Institution, in London. The Moveable Hothouse could be built to any length, width and height required. It consisted of a complex system of gears and wheels allowing natural momentum to move the structure. A boiler and plumbing for a hot and cold-water irrigation system was included with the pipes fixed to an iron or timber framework. The Moveable Hothouse was mounted on rail tracks set 16 feet apart and the ground beneath didn’t have to be level.

Ferry Wharf was at the bottom of Boundary Road. The dark boat shed with the white double door was used by the local Sea Guides, later better known as Sea Rangers. Most of the brick-built buildings in this view are still in place, although some are structurally altered, along with Basin Road North leading up to the main road. The small inlet between Baltic Wharf and Hall’s Ferry Wharf is today used by Hove and Adur Sea Cadets, T.S. King Alfred, as their ‘Lizard Boating Station’, itself 32

The Moveable Hothouse was able to cover the vegetables and flowers that needed protection from storms or had to be forced on. People worked inside the Moveable Hothouse and several of these greenhouses were used side by side in the market garden. The paths in the growing area were narrow to allow for maximum usage. Arthur Pullen-Burry’s invention, which included the mixing of glass, hot steam, electrical lighting and natural un-powered motion, seemed a recipe for disaster. Yet it was successful and farm produce of better quality and in advance of a growing season for a certain types of vegetables was produced in large quantities. It also allowed for the growing of fruit and vegetables not native to this country. H & A Pullen-Burry Ltd remained in business for much of the 20th century and employed over 400 people from the Sompting, Lancing and Shoreham areas. Mystery Towers “Admiralty M-N Scheme” was the official title for the project which saw huge concrete and steel structures constructed in Southwick towards the end of the First World War. It was devised by Sir Alexander Gibb, the Engineer-in-Chief to the Admiralty. The plan was to sink eight large concrete and steel structures in a line on the seabed on the Varne Shoal in the Straights of Dover between Dungeness and Cap Gris Nez. A civilian, G Menzies, designed the towers. Each one was about 190 feet (58 metres) tall and 170 feet (52 metres) across at the widest part. The hexagonal concrete base consisted of three tiers, each one narrower and taller than the one below. Above the bases was a round turret about 50 feet (15 metres) tall, made of steel and faced with timber. The top steel structure was 24 feet (7.3 metres) high and had davits for boats, a crane, a base for mounting anti-aircraft guns and a submarine detection system which required a special electricity generating facility. Each tower would be manned, with accommodation inside the tower for up to 90 crew.
The plan was to tow the towers out to sea and sink them in a row across the Channel by allowing seawater into the honeycomb chambers in the base. Anti-submarine nets and mines would then be placed between the towers. This would stop any U-boats getting into the English Channel.
In June 1918 the engineers, who were to build
the towers, arrived in Southwick and set up a camp on the Green under the command of Lt. Col. Arthur de Winton Kitcat of the Royal Marine Light Infantry. They were Royal Marine Engineers, part of the Royal Navy. The lower Green was covered with corrugated Nissen huts and the top Green had wooden huts on it. The camp was laid out in streets with running water,

There was obviously great speculation amongst the local population as to what these strange structures could be and many rumours began to circulate about them. The press described them as the Southwick Mystery Towers and the authorities, anxious to keep the real purpose secret, encouraged all the wild stories. It was not until February 1927 that the Admiralty released details of the actual purpose of the towers. When the war ended in November 1918 one of the towers was complete and another nearly so. There were also three bases still under construction. The completed towers had cost over £1 million each, a huge amount of money in 1918, and so understandably there was considerable debate about what to do with them now they were no longer to be needed but were clogging up Shoreham Harbour. It wasn’t until nearly two years after the end of the war, on 12th September 1920, that one completed tower was towed out of Shoreham Harbour to be sunk on the Nab sandbank off the Isle of Wight, where it replaced the lightship which had previously warned sailors. It took about nine months to demolish the other tower; longer than it had taken to build it. Much of the concrete debris was used on building a sea wall and in foundations or garden paths around Southwick, Shoreham and even as far away as Worthing. It is fortunate that this second tower was never actually required to be towed out to sea as it was discovered that it was too wide to leave the harbour mouth. The three bases whose construction had only just started were buried when the South Gut was filled in in the 1940s and wharves and warehouses now cover the site. (southwicksociety.btck.co.uk.)

THE ‘SECRET SUBWAY’ OF SHOREHAM
Did you know that our level crossing has a subway? It was built by the level crossing so that pedestrians could use it when the swing gates were shut, and not wait in the rain and wind. But in the 1980s British Railways put in new automatic barriers, replacing the swing gates. On one side they needed the space where the subway steps came up to put in the mechanism. Then everything was remotely controlled from Lancing (now it’s Three Bridges I believe?) and they could demolish the signal box, where the fruit & veg stall is now. At this point, they COULD have put in new access to the subway. But they didn’t. It was left just connecting the ends of the platforms. And did anyone complain? I don’t know, I wasn’t around but I suspect the new electric barriers were quick. They did not stay closed for long, and people got used to it. Eventually they forgot about their subway. It became a secret. Fast forward to today. We have three, sometimes four trains while the barriers are kept closed. Waits of over 16 minutes: that’s official Network Rail figures. Taxi drivers claim it can be closed for up to 40 minutes in the hour. I timed 35 minutes in the hour one Saturday evening. There are more trains, and signalling safety means the gates are closed for longer. Talking of safety – what about people jumping the barriers to avoid a long wait? There are press reports that students do it, one of our Committee (who should know better!) admits he’s done it. Tommy 38
Ramshaw did it in February 2016 and was killed. No one would need to if they could use the subway again. Network Rail have given us three reasons for not allowing subway access: “there’s no room” and “it discriminates against the disabled” and “it’s very expensive”. How expensive? They claimed that a feasibility study “would likely be in excess of £100,000”. Not to do anything, just consider it! Actually The Shoreham Society architects have come up with some very simple solutions that wouldn’t cost much. Where are we now? Inside Shoreham is backing the project. Let your Councillors know as two of them are meeting Network Rail on October 21st. The steps are probably still there, buried, on the south side. We could investigate ways of funding, even crowdfunding? Wouldn’t it be great if we could cross the tracks and avoid those long, tedious waits. A.
