Verrucae Karen and Lisa, our podiatrist’s at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea discusses the common problem of verrucae. Verrucae are warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/ showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus. Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin. Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained. Karen and Lisa will be able to advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and/or for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future. If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk 4

Safe in Sussex’s annual Shocking Shirts & Funky Frocks Day goes ahead virtually At the end of June Safe in Sussex went ahead with their Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks Day virtually. Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks is held the last Friday of June which coincides with National Cream Tea Day. We kicked off the day on Facebook sharing a medley that Noel Lincoln a pianist made for us just for Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks Day. Many people and organisations got involved virtually from individual businesses like Zorina Bradshaw from Tickety-Box , Jess Haslett with her Kinesiology business and Liz Ranger from Arise Ltd. Kate Henwood of Kate Henwood Photography made delicious cream teas enabling people to participate in National Cream Tea Day All the branches of Santander Bank in Sussex and Surrey participated. Emily Wild, Community Hub Director said “ For me, getting involved with the Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks day throughout the Santander branches in Sussex and Surrey was an opportunity to raise awareness for colleagues and customers of domestic abuse and how the charity supports people in these circumstances. As a high street bank our role has never been more important to support customers and raising awareness of domestic abuse including financial abuse which can be identified in our
Tickety-Box (Zorina & her son) roles. This event enabled us to educate our teams, communities and in turn be able to support our customers who may be a victim of domestic abuse. In addition, we were able to have some fun in our very different attire and raise funds in branches through conversations with customers regarding the great work the charity provides”. Also members of the South Coast Business Networking and Mumpreneur Networking Club took part in Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks as they held their meetings but via Zoom now. The Mumpreneurs Networking Club have been amazing at supporting Safe in Sussex throughout the Covid-19 pandemic raising £500 last month when they held a record-breaking virtual networking meeting of 100 people on Zoom. Debbie West Community Fundraiser for Safe in Sussex said “We have had to change how we fundraise due to Covid-19, making use of virtual opportunities. We are delighted and thankful that despite this many people took part in our Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks Day and helped raise awareness of our work.”England BN11 1AF Email: debbie.west@safeinsussex.org.uk www.safeinsussex.org

5 WAYS YOU CAN REDUCE TAX LIABILITY IN RETIREMENT When you retire, there are a lot of financial decisions to be made. But one important question is often overlooked: How much tax will I pay? How and when you access your pension, savings and investments can have an impact on your tax liability. It should be one of the areas you consider as you approach retirement. These five ways could help you reduce tax liability. 1. THE PERSONAL ALLOWANCE The Personal Allowance is the amount of income you’re entitled to receive tax-free each year. For 2020/21, it’s £12,500 for the majority of people. The Personal Allowance covers all forms of income. Once you factor in all income sources in retirement, the total will likely exceed it, but it provides a base for building a tax-efficient income.
worth more than £6,000 (excluding your car), a second home, and shares that aren’t held in an ISA. However, there is an annual taxfree allowance, for individuals it is £12,300. In retirement, this can be a useful way to increase your tax-free income.
5. DIVIDEND ALLOWANCE If you’re invested in companies that pay a dividend, the Dividend Allowance can boost your income without affecting the amount of tax you need to pay. This is on top of any dividend income that falls within your Personal Allowance. For 2020/21, the dividend allowance is £2,000. It can 2. PENSION WITHDRAWAL TAX-FREE ALLOWANCE boost your retirement income without increasing If you’ve been paying into a Defined Contribution tax charges. Using a combination of saving products, such as pension, it will usually become accessible when you’re 55. This includes 25% available to withdraw personal pensions, stocks and shares ISAs and general saving accounts, it may be possible to tax-free. achieve the retirement income you want while 3. WITHDRAWING FROM ISAS reducing tax liability. ISAs offer a tax-efficient way to save and invest. Each tax year, adults can add up to £20,000 to ISAs.Through an ISA you can either save in cash, earning interest, or invest to hopefully deliver returns. The key benefit is that interest or returns earned aren’t taxed. As a result, withdrawals can supplement your income without increasing your tax liability. 4. CAPITAL GAINS TAX ALLOWANCE Selling certain assets for profit can result in Capital Gains Tax, this includes personal possessions T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk

A Good News Story..... My name is Oscar, I am 18 and alongside my 16 year old brother Leo, after having our A Level and GCSE exams cancelled this year, we have used the time to create a new company ‘Bargain Bubbles’. When our SodaStream ran out during lockdown, we were struggling to find a service that gives a fair price with simple delivery options, so we decided to create our own, where we offer a low price with same day delivery. Not only does this give people a constant supply of sparkling water over quarantine, but there are additional environmental benefits with our business. Unlike purchasing sparkling water in single use plastic bottles, our exchange service means provides a big saving for the environment with no unnecessary extra packaging. In addition to this, I deliver every CO2 refilled bottle on my motorbike which is very fuel
10
efficient, and an exchange system allows these bottles to be reused minimising waste. My brother, involved in the creation of the website and business, is hoping to get an electric motorbike in the coming months, reducing our carbon
footprint with Bargain Bubbles even further. Taking all safety precautions, we have begun delivering refilled CO2 bottles during lockdown, we take an empty bottle from our customers to reuse as part of an exchange system
Our website is www.bargainbubbles.co.uk. We are based in Hassocks but deliver to Brighton and Hove, Shoreham, Worthing, Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint, Ditchling, Haywards Heath and Lewes.

Shoreham Osteopathy Centre Dr Jude Jarrett, Psychologist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, offers some advice as we go into a holiday season that isn’t quite the same as we’re used to... Summertime normally means freedom for the kids, moments of shared joy, and a welcome break from the relentless school schedule. This year of course things are different – many children never returned to school after months at home, and there’s great uncertainty over what the future holds. Over the coming weeks, many parents and their children will experience growing concerns as the return to education approaches. Parents will be on the search for childcare as their livelihoods get tentatively back on track. Young people will be considering how to navigate adult lives that look different from what they’d planned. For many, there will be more disappointment and loss; loss of opportunity, status, funds, careers, relationships and imagined futures. As a mum myself, I know that at times like these it can make all the difference to find someone supportive, who really listens to you. That someone might seem out of reach, but they could be a relative, a neighbour, a school Mum or a work mate. 12
My advice is to surround yourself if you can with people that make you feel good about yourself and seem to “get you”. If you’re open to sharing your own feelings, being accepting, and searching for common ground, you could also be someone else’s emotional lifeline.
However, if you or your children are struggling to find a comforting ear, if you’re feeling alone or you need extra help to cope, professional psychological support can be helpful. Children and young people who have experienced emotional difficulties in the past, such as low mood or anxiety, might be especially vulnerable at this time, and they could benefit from talking therapy – including learning evidence-based techniques for managing their emotions. All are very welcome to contact me to discuss their child’s needs or their own. You are not alone.

Ropetackle Launches Summer Family Film Programme to Brighten the Days As the country begins to open up again, Ropetackle is delighted to present a children’s programme for August to help keep the little ones entertained and inspired during the summer holidays. While the usually bustling centre is not able to offer any live shows for the moment, it can open as a cinema and its dedicated volunteer Film Committee have leapt into action to present six family-friendly films. From 4th – 21st August, there will be feature films on Tuesdays for families, and toddler films on Friday mornings for the under 5s. In line with social distancing guidelines, there will be up to 60 tickets available for each performance and a clear system in place to keep everyone safe. In readiness for opening its doors, the venue will not only have had a “Covid-proof” deep clean, but a comprehensive set of safeguarding measures will also have been implemented, ensuring all of the relevant guidance is complied with. Anne Hodgson of the Ropetackle Trust – a former deputy headteacher – has been keen to set this up so that children can return to normal life as safely as possible. “The lockdown and subsequent missing of school will have been really hard for children, who thrive on learning and being with others,” she says. “It is also really important for families to go out and do things together. Seeing a film on the big screen is a fun, shared experience and I am really hoping when people see that we have the proper measures in place for everyone to be safe, they will come along.” Martin Allen, Chairman of the Trust added: “We are treading carefully as a venue. Although we aren’t able to fully function with live events, the fact we can still entertain 14
the community and give them a full cinema experience is something we are really happy about. It’s been a long time for families to be cooped up at home so I am sure they will welcome the opportunity to get out for an hour or two!”

Creative Colour Photography
This month I want to suggest a way of making your colour photographs a little more cunning and creative.
means aligning trees, rivers, rocks, clouds or hills so that these elements appear throughout the photographic frame.
It takes observation and patience but is really just an extension of a traditional landscape technique where you include both foreground and background interest in the frame.
This connection between foreground and background adds depth to the image.
With landscape, nothing is moving so it is the photographer who has to position themselves to find the best, most interesting viewpoint to create the desired composition. This
16
Sometimes elements of landscape can be a long distance apart meaning that lighting can be different on each element. Mist could pervade the background, enhancing the mood and atmosphere of the scene. With photographs taken in the street, there is often
movement as people, bikes and cars bustle around. To capture a street scene requires speed of thought and reaction from the photographer. To a certain degree, the photographer can position themselves intelligently, time permitting but often it is a matter of waiting for the moving elements to reach a place where you can capture them to complete the composition of your choice. This is known as ‘The decisive moment’ a term popularised by street photographer and photojournalist Henri Cartier - Bresson. So how can you use this technique to enhance your colour images ? Well added to the composition of elements that I have mentioned, you can also, with skill and patience, capture matching colours in the foreground and background. Observation is the key, a skill which photographers can develop over time with a little practice.
17
I will be running photo workshops at The Shoreham Centre again when it is safe to do so. Please email me for further details : steveboylephotos@gmail.com Steve Boyle is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society I have examples of my own images here. Exciting times ahead 1st July is the start of the Lions’ year and Adur East Lions new President is Lion Pearl Boyce. Here is her story of why and how she got to this point: “When I moved from London a few years ago, little did I realise within a few years I would have the honour of becoming President of Adur East Lions Club July 2020- June 2021. I’d been a London Ambassador at the 2012 Olympics, so I decided to carry on with my volunteering. A chance meeting with Lion Rose at Shoreham Artisans Market led me to meet a group of like-minded, friendly people helping the local community. In short, we fundraise and redistribute by democratic vote to an often, urgent need within the local community. I’ve never had a plan in life and so it seems fitting that in this ‘strange, new world’ I lead us forward into an unprecedented future. Of course, we have plans but they will be changed and adapted according to needs and requirements.” 18
One thing will be clear and VERY evident – WE ARE LIONS – ‘WE SERVE’ Almost at the same time Adur East Lions welcomed their 30th member – another pair of hands to help. Lion Janette Ward explains why she is a Lion: “I joined the International Lions organisation 21 years ago. I work full time for myself and wanted to volunteer and help others - extremely rewarding and important to me. You have to sacrifice a bit of your ‘downtime’, but this can only be a good thing as you meet, laugh, chat, have fun and make new friends. It really does change your life to give back to your local community- you’ll feel better for it. In these unprecedented times it puts things in prospective. So, come and join us! It can only be a good thing.”

The Circuit of Britain Air Race 1911 the race, Saturday the 22nd of July 1911, thousands of spectators cheered those that managed to become airborne on their way.
Lord Northcliffe In 1911, during the pioneering years of aviation, Lord Northcliffe, the owner of the Daily Mail, decided the newspaper would sponsor an air race. The prize was £10,000 for whoever was first in completing the 1,000-mile course in the fastest time. The race was to take place in five stages, with eleven stops at the country’s fledgling aerodromes to record flight times. Twenty-nine aviators entered the race, flying the cutting-edge planes of the day. Square-winged monoplanes and box-tailed biplanes, constructed from wood, canvas and wire that would somehow hold metal engines, fuel tanks and a pilot aloft, took off one at a time from Brooklands in Surrey. On the first day of 22
On Wednesday the 26th of July 1911, stage 4 of the race (Bristol to Brighton) began. It involved a distance of 224 miles and began at 5 o’clock when race leader Lieutenant Jean Louis Conneau of the French Navy took off. The French Navy frowned upon air racing so Conneau had entered the race using the pseudonym of ‘André Beaumont’. He was flying a Blériot XI single engine square-winged monoplane. It had a boxed, open-air cockpit, skeletal fuselage with fixed, bicyclelike landing wheels. Jules Védrines flying a MoraneBorel monoplane was in second place in the race. He set off immediately after Conneau. Both planes had the same engine but the Morane-Berol plane was slightly faster being lighter and it had smaller landing wheels. The planes flew at an average speed of 45 miles per hour. Vedrines established a two-minute lead in this stage making up for time he’d lost in the previous stages of the race. In his biography ‘Mes Trois Grandes Courses’
published in 1912 under his pseudonym, Conneau noted that he arrived at Exeter at 6 o’clock. The newspapers reported a crowd of twelve thousand spectators to watch the flyers land, check their times with race stewards and service their planes. Conneau noted that he took off from Exeter just after 7:05 am entering calm skies. Vedrines arrived at Salisbury Plain at 8:10 am and Conneau at 8:32 am. British Army Bristol spotter planes escorted them in to land, to the cheers of the soldiers based at Salisbury. MajorGeneral Sir Henry Rawlinson returned to Conneau his cap he had lost at Brooklands. It had been on its own journey during the week by car and train through the race stages to catch up with its thrilled owner.

Conneau’s plane’s engine was spluttering so he had the fuel tank emptied, suspecting the petrol was impure. This proved to be the case when it discovered a fuel-line was blocked with castor oil. With every attempted take off there was always a chance that a plane would fail to leave the ground. This had already caused most racers to withdraw throughout the week. When Conneau took off from Salisbury Plain, he was heading for the next stop in the race, the new airfield at Shoreham-By-Sea. The day had started hot with clear skies but choosing to fly towards Portsmouth and along the coast, Conneau encountered rain clouds. He had to fly underneath them and through the turbulence of the potentially hazardous weather. At the very least, it would be unpleasant to sit in a soaking wet open-air Blériot XI as first built
24
cockpit if it rained. Conneau landed at Shoreham at 11 o’ clock and reported to the race steward, George Arthur Wingfield, the chairman of Shoreham Aerodrome Limited. Wingfield had been very keen to have the new airfield included in the race. Conneau now discovered he had won the race, before the final stage, as Vedrines was unable to improve upon his time. Both had flown 1,000 miles across the country over five days and all that remained was the short flight back to Brooklands Surrey, and to the victory celebration. At Shoreham, Conneau according to his biography signed one postcard. Then the stewards ushered the spectators away from the exhausted pilots who fell asleep on camp beds. A doctor gave a massage to
Conneau who in return gave him an autograph. After having lunch and with their planes serviced and ready to go, Conneau started his engine five minutes before departure, to overcome the engine trouble his plane was still having. At 1.20pm the crowd cheered as Conneau took off from Shoreham to fly back to Brooklands, Surrey to claim his prize. According to his biography he used the railway line as a guide to get there. At St Barnabas House, our monthly fundraising income plummeted by 70% when the coronavirus struck, due to events being cancelled and the closure of our shops. Although the constraints are easing and we have been overwhelmed by the support from our local community, we still need your help more than ever to make up the shortfall and ensure we can continue providing our care services in the months ahead. That’s why we are asking local people to join the St Barnabas House Lottery. The regular, weekly income our Lottery provides allows us to plan ahead and budget effectively for the difficult times now and to come. It costs just £1 a week and by joining the Lottery, you could make a huge difference to local people with terminal illnesses exactly when they need it most. And that’s not all. Everyone who plays our Lottery stands a chance of winning our top prize of £1,000 every single week. Ann, from Worthing, knows exactly how much of a difference winning a prize can make. She recently told us how happy she was to win a prize of £250. “It made my day – and then that feeling of happiness lasted long into other days too. Well, it’s nice to be cheered up – it’s been
such a miserable year. This was like, ‘WOW!’ It came out of the blue. And it makes such a difference. “I’m in my sixties now and I’ve lost so many relatives and friends to cancer. And St Barnabas House is a place that has helped people I’ve known throughout my life.” By playing our Lottery you could help St Barnabas House do so much for so many people in the weeks and months ahead. “We don’t talk about 2020’’ Is that what we’ll say in the future when this year is brought up in conversation? What was set to be a fantastic year very quickly turned into something none of us could have predicted. As a company we have been mindful of how we have communicated our services during this time. We are acutely aware that the nature of our business highlights our mortality and during this time it could potentially come across as being distasteful. However, I feel I’ve now got to say it. If a pandemic that none of us saw coming hasn’t brought home the need to have your affairs in order, and by that I mean an up to date valid Will and both Lasting Power of Attorney documents in place, then nothing will, so you may as well stop reading now. Moving on… If you are one of the people who was planning to get organised in 2020 but have fallen into the category that were advised to stay home but are now in a position to venture out and start moving forward with life then let’s get together and make a start. Arranging your Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney using a professional should be a straightforward process. It tends to take two meetings (which thankfully if visiting our office can be done at well over the recommended social distancing of two
28
metres). The first meeting is an opportunity for you to ask any questions that you have and for me gather the information that I need to draft your documents. The second, once you have approved the content that I will have sent to you, is for the signing and witnessing of the final documents. If it is felt that further meetings are required, then they of course take place without question or further cost. I hope that more people start to grasp the importance of estate planning so that less families are left in the lurch when their loved ones either lose capacity or pass away. Careful, thorough planning means that your estate is managed how you want which means potentially less inheritance tax to pay and most importantly less upset in the end. Midnight Walk returns for 2020 as a Virtual Sunrise event Walk Together Apart for local hospice care
will be hosting an extra special Sunrise to Remember takeover, with interviews with walkers and the hospice care team, as well as the chance for participants to request songs and leave messages in honour of their loved ones.” Whether it’s for fun or fitness, as a challenge or in memory of a loved one, participants can take part alone, walk with someone from their household, or in a small socially-distanced group, following government guidelines. Despite COVID-19 leading to the postponement and cancellation of many events, St Barnabas House supporters will still be able to put their best foot forward for the hospice this autumn. Thinking outside the box, the charity is replacing its biggest annual fundraising event ‘Night to Remember’ midnight walk with ‘Sunrise to Remember: Virtual Edition’. Taking place on 12 September 2020, Sunrise to Remember: Virtual Edition, will bring all the excitement and camaraderie of Night to Remember, but with a special virtual twist. Instead of walking through the night, hundreds of local residents will be setting off from their own homes at sunrise, walking from darkness into light on a seven-mile route of their choice. Sophie Henderson, Events Fundraiser at St Barnabas House said: “Feedback from those who have signed up to take part in Night to Remember is that they would be really disappointed if they were unable to take part, so we’ve worked hard behind the scenes to come up with a way for them to do so whilst keeping safe and adhering to government guidelines. “Whilst walkers will be physically walking apart from other participants, we’ll be bringing everyone together on the day, virtually, by broadcasting live on Facebook and YouTube both before and after their walk. “On top of this, More Radio Worthing (107.7FM) 30
Marie Hamilton, 41 from Worthing, has walked in Night to Remember for the last four years and is relieved that the event is going ahead in its new form. Marie will be walking in memory of her mother, Kate Gladden, alongside her eight-year-old daughter, Beth. Marie said: “I’m taking part in Sunrise to Remember in memory of my Mum. Mum and my daughter, Beth, were so close so its lovely for her to be able to take part and so special for me to have her by my side doing the walk together. My son, Frank, wants to join in too but he’s only five and I’m not sure he’d make the 7 miles. We’ll have to see!” Marie’s mother, Kate, was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, a very rare and untreatable condition, in 2015 and received end-of-life care from the Hospice at Home team during her final days. Since the death of her mother, Marie and her family and friends have raised an incredible £21,365 for St Barnabas House by taking part in the event every year since 2016. Marie said: “St Barnabas looked after Mum so well, so it is the least we can do to say thank you. “The Hospice at Home team were incredible and we are forever grateful to them for being there in our darkest hours. Mum was at ease as soon as the team turned up and we knew we were in safe hands while we went through the hardest thing we ever had to do. It took away a lot of fear that Mum and the rest of the family were feeling. We were also supported a long time afterwards.” Marie has this message for anyone thinking
of taking part in Sunrise to Remember: “Do it! It is an incredible thing to be part of and every penny raised and awareness of the hospice will help other families receive the same amazing care that we did in their time of need.” St Barnabas House hope that more people will sign up to don their Sunrise to Remember t-shirts and take on the seven-mile challenge, as the fundraising will help the hospice to continue offering free care to local people living with terminal illness. Sophie Henderson said: “The event holds a very special place in our hearts and we know it means a lot to the local community too. It was a tough decision to change the event, but the wellbeing of our patients, families, supporters, staff and volunteers is always at the forefront of every decision we make. “The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families needing our support, so we would love as many people as possible to get involved so we can continue providing care for local people, now and in the future.” Sunrise to Remember is open to everyone. Registration is £12 per person, free for children under 16. Sign up today by visiting www.stbh.org.uk/ nighttoremember
Kick start your Summer - SleepOut! Raise money, save lives! In aid of Turning Tides.
Involve your family and friends and be a ‘Home Hero’ for Turning Tides by taking part in your very own summer time adventure! This August brings you the fantastic ‘Big Summer SleepOut’ to raise money in aid of Turning Tides who support local homeless men and women across West Sussex. It is open to everyone and completely free to join in and you choose your location! Give up your bed for one night on Saturday 8 August and choose an alternative location to sleep – in your garden under the stars, in a specially built den, in the loft or in the bath! It doesn’t matter as long as it’s safe and meets current Government COVID Guidelines. By sleeping out somewhere new you will help to raise awareness and raise money for homeless men and women who really need support. Rope in as many friends and family as you can – get your street involved and plan your own activities and entertainment - and have your own safe, socially distanced SleepOut that will make a massive social difference. There is a best dressed den competition and an online activity programme packed with fun and entertainment. To make it easy we can send you a Fundraising Support pack to help you get the most out of your SleepOut. For most of us, our bed is a safe and warm place. However, many people in our community do not have a bed of their own; they might be sleeping rough, living in unsuitable accommodation, living in their car or sofa surfing. This takes an extreme toll on a person, both physically and mentally. Homeless men and women die on average 30 years sooner than the general population. Join in and take a stand against homelessness Just £85 raised, pays for a full day of emergency support for homeless men and women. If 100 families, groups or individuals raise £85 this will pay for 100 days of emergency support – so we are really hoping people will feel moved to join in and we are thrilled to have Compass Bus supporting this event too! LEGACY OF LASTING COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR WESTERN SUSSEX HOSPITALS Two new initiatives have launched at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that showcase the overwhelming support received from communities in West Sussex during the pandemic period, seeding a legacy of lasting support for the hospitals. The twinning scheme pairs local schools and community groups with a specific ward or department. During the pandemic period, hundreds of rainbow pictures and messages of support were sent in to patients who could not receive visitors due to Covid-19 restrictions. As most of the wards at Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester are named after communities in Sussex, in many cases, they are being twinned with those who share their name. For instance, Durrington High School in Worthing is proudly twinning with Durrington ward. Chris Woodcock, Headteacher, Durrington High School, said: “Kindness is one of our core values at Durrington High School and we encourage students to give back to the community. Our students have really enjoyed getting creative and sharing messages to patients and staff on Durrington Ward. We’re excited to see how this partnership flourishes.” Pauline Cheeseman, Durrington Ward Matron, said: “We’re delighted to be twinned with Durrington High School and look forward to seeing how this partnership develops in the
32
future. We love the idea of engaging local students and building a sense of community.” In the future, it is hoped twinning could support recruitment, volunteering, work experience, fundraising, community engagement and many other as yet unknown benefits. To find out more and get your school, parish or community involved in the twinning scheme, please contact wshnt.comms@nhs.net. Alongside the twinning scheme, the trust is asking communities to send in pictures of their pandemic tributes to feature on permanent murals on the walls of Southlands, Worthing and St Richard’s hospitals.

Trust’s PALS and Communications & Engagement teams. Maggie said: “We have all been blown away by the wonderful support we’ve received from our communities in recent weeks. Our twinning initiative will enable us to foster these relationships and develop even stronger bonds with our communities in the years ahead, and the murals will help visualise just how appreciated and valued our staff are by the local community long after the pandemic ends.” The trust will collage them into a wonderful colourful design, ensuring the love and support received for the trust’s amazing NHS teams is appreciated for years to come. To help make history and contribute to the murals, local people can send in pictures of their pandemic tributes to wshnt.pictures@ nhs.net or WhatsApp 07557 01 41 03.
