Free Business Start-up Course in Shoreham-by-Sea Smart Dog Community Interest Company of Steyning is running a free Business Start up and Early stage business growth programme in August 2021 in Shoreham The course is 5 sessions in total, every 2 weeks for 3 hours per session. Entirely free, this course will cover all aspects of starting and running a business in the UK in an interactive and interesting way. Smart Dog will help participants ensure they get the legal structure, name, finances, marketing and customers. Run by expert business advisors, they will help you learn from other’s mistakes, and find you routes to local funding and marketplaces.

Food & Drink Festival on the horizon! The Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival Committee are beavering away collecting loads of lovely special offers from local businesses for you to enjoy during this, their 10th year, of the annual month long Festival – beginning on 4th September and running through until 2nd October.
Events are mounting up thick and fast too, including such things as a Wiston House Garden Tour with Wiston Sparkling Wine Tasting, Local Distilled Spirits & Cocktail Tasting at the Farmers Market, Beer Festival and Open Brewery Days – that’s just a few of the “boozy” ones! Tom Sayers, The Boxer Tom Sayers was born on the 15th May 1826. He was the youngest of five siblings and his father was a Brighton cobbler. With no formal education, Tom picked up odd jobs, working on the beaches in the fishing It was on the beach that Tom learned to box, wrapping old socks and stockings around his fists for boxing gloves.
At the age of thirteen, Tom was sent to London to live with his sister Eliza and her husband Robert King, a builder who employed him as a labourer. Following an argument over work Tom left and walked from London back to Brighton. There he found work for himself as an apprentice bricklayer and became a boxer who trained at the Druid’s Head pub. At Newmarket Hill in Brighton, a local boxer called Haines issued a challenge with a prize of beer money to any man would face him in the ring. Tom accepted and after seventeen rounds the fight was stopped and declared a draw. Tom returned to London to live with his sister and Robert King who now employed him as a bricklayer. In 1849, Tom had moved into a house in Camden with his pregnant girlfriend. He was now advertising himself as a prizefighter. Picked up by boxing promoters in 1850, his fight with Dan Collins at Edenbridge in Kent was interrupted in the ninth round and moved by a magistrate to Redhill in Surrey. The fight continued there from the tenth round and was stopped at round fifty, when it was declared a draw. In 1852, a sixty-four round bruising and bloody battle came to end when Tom Sayers defeated Jack Grant. However Tom himself was defeated by Nat Langham in Inside Shoreham & Southwick July 2021
a gruelling sixty-one round fight in 1853. Boxing at that time was often a brutal affair that often precariously treaded the fine line of law and order. Boxing matches were often stealthily promoted, with a thousand strong crowd gathering in the freezing cold, at a remote location where the police wouldn’t bother to show up and stop the fight. It was normal for two men to slug it out for hours. On the 10th of February 1857, on the mud flats of Canvey Island and accessible only by rowing boat and the River Thames paddle steamer, Tom Sayers went eightyfive rounds with Aaron Jones. On the return boat trip Tom managed to get a whip round organised among the passengers and raised £8 for the defeated Jones. Despite having two children to look after and finding himself often in poverty Tom collected £30 for the defeated Tom Paddock and £22 for William Perry The ‘Tipton Slasher’ as they travelled back by boat from their fights with Tom. When Paddock was struck down by rheumatic fever and rushed to hospital Tom raised money to see him through to recovery. In 1860, Tom Sayers’ biggest fight was against the American, John Camel Heenan in a field at Farnborough. After cont/d page 36

George’s Story
In 2011, my husband George was diagnosed with lung cancer. His condition deteriorated rapidly, to the point where I was struggling to cope and recognised that he needed specialist nursing care from St Barnabas House.
On arrival at the hospice they were able to control George’s sickness and pain. He died within 36 hours of arriving but the care they provided during this time was incredible. Following George’s death, I was supported by a lady called Rosemary, a bereavement buddy provided by St Barnabas. Rosemary helped me learn to live in spite of the fact that I’d lost the person I loved most in the world. I would have struggled without her. Now, Rosemary and I are the best of friends.
I went to the Sunflower Memories service at the hospice the summer after George died. It was a beautiful experience. Everything was about the future, hope and the way forward. It was so uplifting. A hospice like St Barnabas isn’t just a place to die. It helps you to live the rest of your life in the best possible way you can.

Pregnancy Tips from mama Chiro Being pregnant is such a precious time, although it can be amazing for some women, it can be a tough experience for others. If a woman experiences pain in the lower back, pelvis, pubic symphysis and/or leg pain during pregnancy she should seek care from a professional, such as a chiropractor. Pain is not a normal part of pregnancy; it is an alert that her body is out of balance and that the baby maybe uncomfortable. Tips to keep your body balanced in Pregnancy: 1- Yoga and Pilates are highly recommended during pregnancy, not only do they help keep your body moving they also help to relax the mind. The Yoga and Wellness rooms in Shoreham have some wonderful pregnancy classes. 2- Chiropractic care to help maintain the balance between the pelvis and uterus. Less torsion means more space, great for mums and babes. Research suggests that chiropractic care may help to reduce labour times. In a small clinical trial women who were pregnant for the first time and received chiropractic care averaged 24% shorter labour times compared to control subjects. 3- Light exercise such as walking, and swimming are wonderful. Like yoga they help keep the pelvic floor and lower abs working well, without putting excess strain on the body. Pregnancy is not the time to take up an intense exercise regime, in fact, sit-ups and heavy lifting are not advised. Listen to your body and adapt your usual regime to suit your changing body.
6- Relaxation and mindfulness. A relaxed mum releases lots of oxytocin (the happy hormone) which also keeps baby relaxed and is essential for labour to progress. Yoga, massage, reflexology, and hypnobirthing are just some of the things you can do to help increase oxytocin levels. Shoreham hypnobirthing are also based at The Yoga and Wellness Rooms.

Photographers often debate the ethics around photographing other people’s art. It’s a subject which I sometimes cover in my live workshops but there are too many aspects to discuss it here. However, simply snapping a painting, for example, is not really adding anything of the photographer, it would be a direct copy of the original and possibly an infringement of copyright if it were to be published in any form.

Preferring the shade, it grows tall and untamed and provides a delectable nectar for butterflies. • Ox-eye Daisies - Tall and gracious, these white and yellow beauties are easy to grow – they thrive in the sun – though they can also overwhelm a plot if not kept in check.

Where’s Your Core? Jenny Davys, Osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, helps solve the mystery… “I don’t have a core!” is the cry from many of our clients at SOC. Happily, we can reassure them that they actually DO, it’s just a matter of understanding what it is and how to activate it, to help make sports and just daily life much easier and safer. What exactly IS my core? The “core” is a term used to describe four main muscles (see picture) and fascia that form a deep-seated “girdle” around your spine and pelvis. These muscles work together with our breath to stabilise our physical centre, particularly the lumbar spine and pelvis, during exercise and even doing mundane things like reaching for a cup on a shelf or bending down to empty the washing machine. They provide strong anchors which give the rest of the muscles of the body something sturdy to pull against. They are designed to activate together AUTOMATICALLY, to stabilise your centre before any other muscle group turns on to create a movement. They have other individual functions as well, but together they function as one and when they work well, we don’t even have to think about them. Why do I need to train or strengthen it? While the core should work automatically, sometimes its function is impaired – especially after any painful injury to the spine. With any injury, the body’s instant reaction is to keep the area still, so larger, more superficial muscles tend to take on the stabilising role – as a result the core muscles get in the habit of not activating as quickly when they are needed. Even when the injury has healed, core muscle Inside Shoreham & Southwick July 2021
activation may be unreliable and inefficient, which means the body is more prone to injury again. So restoring and maintaining core strength/function after injury is really important. So how do I start? Learning to engage your core correctly is a subtle thing. I would always recommend, at least at first, getting advice from a specialist, such as your osteopath/ physiotherapist/chiropractor or Pilates trainer. Immersed 2021! Immersed 2021 is an art project funded by the Arts Council England. I have been meeting with fellow sea swimmers on the beach, mostly local on shoreham beach, but a few further afield in Brighton, Worthing, Margate and Bexhill. We meet, swim together, then sit on the beach talking while I paint them. Each portrait is just 15 minutes, to make a quick, small watercolour study. I then take a photo of them holding their portrait. I have painted 64 portraits so far, between February 2021 and now. Currently photos of the swimmers and portraits are on display at the neighbourhood store in shoreham high street, which is an ideal way to share them with the wider community.
I wanted to share the work with not only the swimmers themselves but with the town of Shoreham, connecting the everyday life of the high street with the beach and sea.
The phenomenon of cold water sea swimming has really taken off during covid, and I believe this project really celebrates the community.

favourite events each year are the Adur East Lions Spring and Christmas tea socials for people of a ‘certain age’ and living alone. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions we haven’t been able to hold them for over 12 months. So it was decided that if guests could’t come us then we would take a cream tea to them making sure we kept well within the restrictions.
A band of merry Lions went out at the end of May/beginning of June and delivered 60 cream teas to guests in Portslade, Southwick and Shoreham and Lancing. Here is a comment from one of our guests: ˜I just want to thank you for the gift you brought me on Wednesday afternoon. Such a lovely surprise, and yesterday I enjoyed my cream tea. A local pilgrimage to raise money for St Mary’s On Saturday 12th June Mark Potter walked from St Mary de Haura Church in Shoreham to Chichester Cathedral - a distance of 30 miles. Supported by 4 local friends, he set off at 8am with a blessing from Revd Ann and sandwiches from Ginger and Dobbs. They arrived at the Cathedral at 7pm after walking for 11 hours.
For Mark, this is becoming an annual pilgrimage. He did the same walk last year to raise much needed funds for the church. He commented: “for me it’s a great opportunity to connect with our Cathedral. It’s a wonderful route with inspiring views. And of course, being sponsored helps the church which does so much in our community. Last year I raised £3k which was matched by my employer, Legal & General. I was determined to do more this year because, like so many organisations, the church has had such a tough time making ends meet” Mark then said “The church gets remarkably little funding so I wanted to help. So this year I set a target of £5k, which Legal & General will match again. A huge thank you to the many people who have given so generously.” To date (15 June), almost £6k has been raised. Johnson’s celebr the nation’s pets
two hours the police battled their way through a riotous crowd and stopped this gruesome clash that had lasted for fortytwo rounds. Both men were declared champions and received belts and Tom was paid £3000 on the condition he never boxed again. During his career Tom often visited Shoreham and trained at the Royal Sovereign pub in Middle Street. He was seen about the town with the words, “ Champion of England “ on his belt. Tom Sayers died on the 8th November 1865, and his funeral a week later attracted some 100,000 people to Camden Town. He is buried in Highgate Cemetery, London. Judy Upton

No-Knead Bread Introduction
When Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey came up with this recipe for no-knead bread – published in The New York Times in 2009 – it caused quite the stir. Surely something so simple couldn’t yield the kind of flavourful crust and airy middle we expect to buy from an artisan baker? Well, just give it a try and see for yourself…

Makes one loaf
• 3 cups of all-purpose flour (405g or 14.3oz) • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt • 1/2 teaspoon of instant yeast • 1 1/2 cups/350ml of room temperature water
Top Tips • If you don’t have a cast-iron pot, you can improvise using a pizza stone and an upturned stainless-steel bowl, as maintaining a high temperature is essential for creating that desirable crust, you will need something to trap warm air around your bread. • Don’t worry if you need to leave your dough to rise longer than the stated time. Up to 24 hours is fine as it is this waiting time that allows the yeast to ferment and create air bubbles without kneading. • Don’t be afraid to improvise. Whether you want to try

Method 1. In a bowl combine flour, yeast and salt. Add 350ml water and stir until blended; the dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover the bowl with cling film, then let the dough rest for at least 12 hours, and preferably up to 18, at warm room temperature. When the dough is ready it will be dotted with bubbles. 2. Lightly flour a surface and fold your dough one or twice before covering and resting once more for 15 minutes. Using a little flour gently shape it into a ball. Then coat a tea towel with flour and put the dough seam-side down. Cover with another towel and let it
rise for about two hours. When it is ready, dough will be more than double in size and won’t bounce back when prodded. 3. To bake, heat oven to 220 degrees with a heavy, cast-iron lidded pan inside. When the dough is ready, remove the pot from oven and turn the dough into it, seam-side up. Cover with lid and bake for 30 minutes, then remove lid and bake another 15 to 30 minutes, until loaf is perfectly browned. Cool on a rack.
