Songs for Shoreham: A Musical Celebration of Shoreham’s Heritage
Shoreham by Sea, 27th & 30th September, 2023
Get ready for an enchanting evening filled with captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics at the extraordinary Songs for Shoreham concert! Proudly presented by Ropetackle Arts Centre, this remarkable event is part of the 'Folk for All' ACE funded project and promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Shoreham's rich heritage.
Date: Wednesday, September 27th, 2023 at 7:30 pm
Matinee: Saturday, September 30th, 2023 at 2:00 pm
Venue: Ropetackle Arts Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG
We’ll take you on a musical journey through the history and essence of Shoreham, brought to life by the exceptional talents of songwriters and performers: Robb Johnson, Mike Reinstein, Reina James-Reinstein, Mervyn Wallis, and the acclaimed Brighton-based folk ensemble, Bird in the Belly. This extraordinary collaboration of local celebrity songwriters will showcase their unique flair and personal touch, making this concert an experience like no other. Songs for Shoreham will transport you to the bustling airport, renowned film studios, and the heart of Shoreham's identity – its port and river. These specially written original songs delve deep into the stories that have shaped this beautiful town. What makes this event even more extraordinary is the involvement of esteemed Shoreham residents and incredibly talented local children who have all contributed to the creation of these remarkable songs. Sneaky peek into the specially created songs: Robb Johnson will perform a heartwarming song created with local children from Swiss Gardens Primary School titled ‘Shoreham, You Make Me Happy’. Bird in the Belly draws musical inspiration from the Adur River, while Mervyn Wallis has skilfully crafted an instrumental piece titled ‘Sussex SUITE,’ combining local poetry and imagery into a mesmerising musical interpretation. Additionally, Mike Reinstein celebrates Nathaniel Gould, a somewhat contentious historical local merchant and politician, and Robb Johnson dedicates a song to the 'People's Tree' and the power of the local people over pointless development. The concert also features a moving song celebrating Esperanza, a Big Issue seller who used to sell at the monthly Farmers Market, as well as a delightful musical poem and round by Reina James-Reinstein celebrating the 6 Ropewalks of Shoreham and the importance of rope.
This features postcards of current-day Shoreham and contributions from the children at Swiss Garden Primary School mentored by Robb Johnson, amongst other amazing songs created exclusively for this show by our exceptional local musicians.
Robb, Mervyn, Reina and Mike performed at a special assembly for Swiss Garden Primary School which concluded with the children joining for their unique song. The children are keen to repeat their
triumph at the Ropetackle in September!
Kitty, resident at Barchester’ Kingsland House care home in Shoreham and Harold, who has sadly since passed, shared their enduring love story spanning over 60 years and inspired songwriters Mike Reinstein and Reina James-Reinstein to craft a beautiful song that will be performed live.
Kitty and Harold were delighted to learn that their love story had been immortalized in a song. They said at the time, "We can't believe that we're going to star in a song, we are so thrilled. We met such a long time ago but have been in love ever since, I can still remember dancing together at The Regent – those were the days! I am so grateful to Mike and Reina for taking such an interest in our story and dedicating a beautiful song to us – it is so very kind of them," they joyfully added.
The concert is directed and produced by the renowned Barb Jungr, with executive production by Anne Hodgson and Ebou Touray. For more information and ticket availability, please visit Ropetackle Arts Centre's website at: https://ropetacklecentre.co.uk/ or contact us for interview availability.

Singles club celebrates 17 years
A party for 100 people was held in Brighton recently for 100 people aged 55+ - and the dancing never stopped. This is what happens when members of The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women, aged 55+, get together.
Back in 2006, The Group opened in Haywards Heath. Later a venue was found in Brighton, followed by venues in Horsham, Lewes and Worthing.
Seven years ago, celebrating it’s first 10 years, The Group held a celebratory dinner. And then Covid. The Group had to stop meeting and had to cancel its planned 15 year celebration.
But, always keen to party, The Group’s seventeenth birthday - odd number though it is - presented members with the perfect opportunity to get together.
Says Tricia Bentley, co-founder of The Group. “We’re very proud that unattached people have a means of meeting new friends through The Group.
Our members tend to be aged 55+ but we don’t have rigid age limits. Those who come along to a club night and join The Group receive an emailed diary twice a month and then they select the events they want to attend.”
But it’s not just dancing. There’s golf, lunches and dinners, walks, theatre, live music and holidays.
The Group meets in Worthing on the first Monday of every month, Burgess Hill on the 2nd Monday, Brighton on the third Wednesday, Horsham on the 4th Monday and Lewes on the 4th Thursday. More details can be obtained from The Group’s website www.thegroup.org.uk

RETIREES, DON’T OVERLOOK THE SURPRISING RISK OF UNDERSPENDING IN RETIREMENT
Spending too much money in retirement is a common fear. Yet, some retirees struggle with the opposite challenge – they spend too little.
As many retirees are responsible for managing their income and ensuring it lasts, there is a real danger of overspending and facing a shortfall in your later years. However, underspending can be dangerous in a different way. It could mean you don’t get the most out of your retirement despite working hard to achieve financial security later in life.
Switching from a saving to a spending mindset
One of the key challenges for some retirees is that they need to change how they view and use money when they enter retirement.
For decades, you may have prioritised building your wealth. However, many people start to deplete the assets they’ve built up in retirement. Even though you’ve diligently saved so you can use your assets now, it can be difficult to switch to a spending mindset. After all, you may have developed positive saving habits over the years that are difficult to break.
4 reasons why financial planning could help you spend more in retirement
While you may think of financial planning as focusing on growing your wealth, it’s about creating a plan that helps you reach life goals. There are several ways financial planning could help you spend more, including:
1. Assessing how long assets need to last: One of the difficulties of knowing how much to spend in retirement is that it’s impossible to know how long your assets need to provide an income. Considering life expectancy is a key part of a financial plan. This means you can understand what spending is sustainable for you.
2. Demonstrating how the value of your assets could change: A useful financial planning tool is cashflow forecasting. It can help you visualise how different decisions will affect the value of your assets.
If you’re frugal in retirement because you’re worried about the long-term effects, cashflow forecasting could demonstrate how your decisions will affect your finances in the short and long term.
3. Creating a reliable income if it’s right for you: Some retirees struggle with the uncertainty of their retirement income. For example, if you use flexi-access drawdown to access your pension, investment returns could affect its value. There are ways to create a reliable income and some will find this provides peace of mind.
4. Giving you someone to turn to: Even with a financial plan in place, there may be times when you still need some reassurance. Once you have a financial plan in place, regular reviews with your financial planner can help you keep it up to date. Marlborough

Coral in Shoreham Harbour
In the copy of ‘Nature Journal’ for the 4th of December 1937, an article cited that coral had been found growing in the Southwick basin of Shoreham Harbour.
This unexpected occurrence was it said, causing considerable trouble by damaging the keels of yachts and small boats lying in that part of the harbour.
The Southwick basin was locked off from the west of the harbour, and its waters were kept at a constant level and free from tidal rise and fall. The seawater in the basin was at the time being used to cool the condensers of the Brighton and Hove electric power station, which was situated on the seaward side, along with the coal wharves on the basin.
Being an enclosed, limited area, the temperature of the water did not fall below a minimum of 65 degrees Fahrenheit. At first the growth was thought to be a tropical reef-building coral that had somehow managed to survive the passage from the Pacific or West Indian oceans by clinging to the base of a yacht. In the comparatively warm waters of the basin it was able to both thrive and grow as it might in a tropical sea.
The British Museum of Natural History was asked to investigate the coral and Mr David Dilwyn John, who was in charge of the collections of Echinoderms, came to Southwick. He collected specimens of all the marine fauna and flora living under the particular conditions occurring in the basin. The ‘coral’ turned out to a type of Polychaete worm that closely resembled Hydrorides Norvegica Gunnerus (Serpilidae), a species that forms and lived in tubes of a calcareous nature. The Southwick Harbour worm was however considered a species new to science, as was described by Mr Charles Carmichael Arthur Monro, an annelidologist at the British Museum of Natural History. The growth of coral like structures consisted of dense brittle clusters of the white tubes, each occupied by one of these worms. Each tube was up to approximately 9 cm in length and an average 1mm in diameter, and they were
usually cemented one to another. The wormbuilt structures occurred more frequently around the waterline of floating objects, encrusting anchor chains and the keels of boats, as opposed to the static supports of the piers. This appeared to indicate that light and aeration was favourable to its growth. The warm water of the Southwick Basin seemed the chief cause of its presence of what was considered at the time an excessive development of the organism. The Evening Post described it as forming ‘lumps as big as footballs.’
It was thought that with a full investigation, other less conspicuous marine organisms might also be found in the tropical conditions occurring in this part of Shoreham Harbour. It was later discovered that the Teredo navalis, commonly called the naval shipworm was present. This species makes its home by burrowing into timber, damaging ships and piers. It must’ve been accidentally imported by a ship with an untreated wooden hull entering the waters of the harbour.
In the present century it’s recorded as to whether any examples of these exotic species still inhabit Shoreham Harbour.

Christmas is coming - Already ??
Yes indeed, it’s almost that time of year again when the television become awash with toy ads and the supermarket’s get your taste buds tingling with their festive food offerings!
At Adur East Lions Club (which covers Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate), we’ve already been planning some of our Christmas activities, like our static Santa/ Sleigh Collections, our Sleigh routes around Southwick and our Santa’s Grotto, also in Southwick.
We always attend Southwick Xmas Market with Santa and our Sleigh but did you know, we also run a market stall selling (new) gifts, toys, jewellery and Christmas Crafts (such as cards, Christmas decorations, tree decorations and crochet blankets).
We are always looking for good quality Christmas Crafts to sell, so if you make anything that you’d like to donate to us (or if you have any unwanted new gifts that you'd like to 'recycle'), just bring them along to our monthly stall at the Shoreham Artisan Market. We’d be very grateful as 95% of the money we raise goes back into the local community and right now, there’s more need than ever. The other 5% goes to International causes, such as the war in Ukraine, Floods Wildfires or other natural disasters.
None of the money we raise goes to salaries or administrative purposes of running the Club, as Lions themselves pay annual dues to become Members. As a Lion you are not just a Member of the Club, you become part of the Lions family. Anywhere you go in the world you are likely to be a stone’s throw away from a Lions Club! Next time you’re away on holiday, keep your eyes peeled for the Lions Logo and I’m sure it won’t be long before you spot one!
If you'd like to learn more about us, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub or give us a call on 0845 333 7356. We'd love to hear from you!

The Arts Society Steyning September talk
Monday 11 September 2023 at 10am
The Cult of Celebrity: Omai, The Exotic and Joshua Reynolds
A talk
by by Leslie Primo
The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ
In this lecture Leslie will look at the events that led up to Joshua Reynolds’s iconic portrait representing Britain at the very height of its imperial powers. As two worlds collided, Leslie’s exploration will include the key players in Omai’s story, his time in England and English society and his interaction therein. How did Joshua Reynolds’ ideas regarding his self image relate to his image of Omai and what can this portrait tell us about 18th century English society, its perception or preconception of the Other or non-white European? What was the impact of Omai’s return to the South Seas, and what has been the legacy of the image we call Omai, an enigma in its own right?
Leslie Primo holds a BA in Art History and an MA in Renaissance Studies from the University of London. He has lectured at the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, the National Maritime Museum and the Courtauld Institute. He currently lectures at the City Literary Institute, Imperial College, London.

Shoreham Wordfest – “Here and There”
Shoreham Wordfest is now an annual xture in the local and regional cultural calendar, attracting high pro le writers and performers from around the UK along with showcasing local creativity.
Tickets for this year’s festival are selling fast and the Fatal Shore Crime Writing Festival has already sold out, but there are many other highlight events available.
The festival starts with a theatre trail through the ancient Marlipins museum.
In Tales from Shoreham, a guide from the early film industry on Shoreham Beach will take you in small groups to meet characters from the town’s history, each having a fascinating tale to tell. There are four shows a day on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October.
Lemn Sissay is one of the most high-profile writers in the UK and we are among the first festivals to hear him read and talk about his new poetry collection, “Let the Light Pour In.” Always entertaining and thought-provoking, this is a unique opportunity to meet Lemn when he appears at The Shoreham Centre on Saturday 7 October
The Wordfest programme has a wide variety of events to attract all ages and interests: political and international discussions with Raphael Behr and Gabriel Gatehouse, talks on archaeology and conservation, drama, song and new authors and poets. We are particularly proud of our partnership with Bloomin’ Arts, a charity working with young adults with disabilities, who will
perform their own version of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor on Saturday 7 October at Ropetackle Arts Centre. Finally, we must highlight another local production, Idle Women, combining drama and music to tell the little-known story of the women who worked on the Inland Waterways

Jazz Evening at St. Mary de Haura
On Friday, 15 September, 7:30-9pm Bessie Matthews, on vocals, will join up with Neal Richardson, on acoustic grand piano, to raise funds for the Friends of Saint Mary de Haura.
Bessie is originally from Chicago, where she grew up on the classical music her family wanted her to listen to, but was also where she absorbed and started singing the blues and jazz that swirled through her hometown’s streets. After many months of Long Covid, Bessie was able to prove her voice was back after singing for 5 hours at Carol Cleveland’s birth bash. Her voice is definitely in full swing now. (Pun intended!) The British jazz pianist, Nikki Yeoh, said about Bessie’s singing: “When I listen to Bessie’s beautiful voice I don’t hear anything other than the magic from her soul.”
Neal Richardson is a powerful and rhythmic pianist and vocalist playing jazz and blues. He cut his teeth performing in jazz clubs, hotels, and on cruise ships in over 50 countries. He has entertained Royalty, Hollywood celebrities and VIPs at world-renowned venues, including playing for George Clooney on his yacht at the Cannes Film Festival.
Neal’s arrangements and original compositions display his wide-ranging tastes and influences, and he and his band have a great swinging style influenced by Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole and Gene Harris. He has played in the London Jazz Festival 8 years running and his seven-piece band has sold out such prestigious London venues as Ronnie Scott’s and St.Martin-in-the-Fields.
We will be presenting a concert of jazz standards, written by, among others Fran Landesman, Nat Adderly, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Oscar Hammerstein & Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter, and Ann Ronnett

Search Dogs Susssex Marks 20 Years of Service
This year, Search Dogs Sussex marks 20 years of service to the community. On-call throughout Sussex and the UK 24/7, 365 days a year, the charity is called on by the police to support emergency services in searching for missing, often vulnerable, people.
Part of Lowland Rescue and the wider framework of UK Search & Rescue, Search Dogs Sussex cover both East and West Sussex, being mobilised over 35 times a year on average, often deploying to neighbouring counties.
The independent, specialist charity, consists of 35 volunteers, 7 operational dogs and 10 trainee dogs. The team are reliant on generous donations from members of the public and businesses to continue their vital role.
There are very few fully trained Search Dogs in the UK. Out of approximately 11 million pet dogs in the country, there are fewer than 45 qualified Lowland Rescue Search Dogs. It is estimated a single search dog is the equivalent of 20 foot-searchers (and far more in poor conditions), with the most highly trained covering approximately 50 acres in 1.5hrs. Unlike Police dogs, Lowland Rescue search dogs are all pets first, working in any environment, from farmland to woodland, using their incredible sense of smell to detect and locate any person in their area. Search dogs use an ‘air-scenting’ technique as opposed to trailing or tracking, and upon locating a missing person, will alert their handler then guide them to the missing person’s location, where the Search Technician will administer first aid and coordinate recovery.
The team, including Search Dogs, Handlers and Search Technicians, must undergo constant training which culminates in a repeating national assessment every two years. In order to meet rigorous standards of operational status, the team are all trained to national Lowland Rescue standards in first-aid, navigation, communication, water safety and search techniques. Many members extend these skills further by completing courses in search planning and management, missing person behaviour, K9 first-aid, advanced medical care and other related training.

Restoration of the Weather Vane on top of St Nicolas Church Tower
The tower was built around the year 1140 and it’s one of the most beautiful Norman towers in the country.
The tower was built around the year 1140 and it’s one of the most beautiful Norman towers in the country. In spring skilled craftsmen from Sussex Flint & Stonemasons fixed the problem with water ingress in the tower.
A weather vane in the shape of a cockerel sits on the tower’s pyramid roof. It is thought to be of Victorian vintage and it was badly in need of restoration.
The skills of a Hassocks blacksmith, Malcolm Johnson of Newtimber Forge, forged a new stand, crafted new letters and repaired the holes in the cockerel. The letters and cockerel were then beautifully gilded by Royal Pavilion expert, Norman Stevens of Lewes.
The idea of a cockerel on church towers goes back to the ninth century AD when Pope Nicholas I authorised their use as a Christian symbol. It’s an emblem of the dawn when St Peter was reminded by the crow of the rooster that he had denied Jesus three times. In the same way the rooster announced the dawn of Easter and is a symbol of resurrection. Therefore, it became a symbol of both the brokenness of humanity and the God’s grace. A rooster is useful as a wind vane because its tail is the perfect shape to catch the wind. Symbolically, the rooster is the first to see the rising sun and announce the day and it became a symbol of light and hope to all those waiting for the rescue of dawn.
A special blessing service was held in St Nicolas before the newly restored weathervane was returned to its position on the tower, now to be admired by anyone who glances up and wishes to know the direction of the wind.

Looking after yourself in times of change
Sarah Goodman, counsellor at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, outlines how counselling can help people cope with the challenges and stress that transitions can create.
Many changes in life are anticipated and may happen as seamlessly as day turning into night, or as summer into autumn… But there are some transitions that hugely impact our lives and provoke anxiety and fear within us. Some examples are: starting a new school, a new job, moving home, losing a loved one, relationship changes, even having a fastapproaching “milestone” birthday.
With all transitions there is a beginning and an end and it’s important to make sure you give attention to both the start and finish, by giving yourself permission and time to feel what you need to as you go through the process. While for one person a particular situation seems straightforward to handle, for others, the same change can result in overwhelm or getting stuck, sadness, fear or frustration - all of which are perfectly natural. Transitions mean leaving something behind. This can be difficult and a qualified counsellor can help you focus on and address what is being given up as you go into a new stage of life. We can help you navigate and more successfully manage the transition by helping you de-mystify aspects of the change and turn the unknown into the known. Below are a few things to remember:
Look after yourself
It’s important not to neglect yourself and your needs. Sometimes a time of transition can lead to extra tasks, and you may find yourself letting slip the basic essentials for your health, such as exercise, eating well and other self-care activities.
Easy does it
Where possible, try not to change too much in one go as this can lead to overwhelm.
Take one step at a time. No rush
Be patient with yourself and realise it might take some time to adapt to the new situation. There is no need to go through transitions on your own. Finding someone you trust with whom you can share your feelings can alleviate any feelings of coping alone. If you would like to make an appointment with Sarah at SOC, give us a call on 01273 567654 or email us on info@shorehamosteo. co.uk and speak to one of our team.

Foreground, Middleground and Background
A photograph can contain the illusion of depth despite being viewed on a flat paper print, projected onto a screen or viewed on your camera or mobile phone screen.
With the inclusion of a foreground, middleground and background, a 2D image appears to be 3D.
The foreground usually, but not always, appears at the bottom of the image as it is closest to the camera. Elements here will appear larger in the frame so this part dominates. The background is often given less attention but it can be just as important.
If it’s confused or over complicated it can prove distracting but if it compliments the foreground it draws the eye past the foreground into the middleground and through to the background keeping the eye of the viewer inside the frame to absorb all the detail.
I like to find backgrounds that play a big part in the image by matching in colours or repeating subjects and the images here are examples of that.
The main image, taken in Brighton, sees a passer by carrying a bright yellow rectangular carrier bag walking past a brightly painted wall of bricks of a similar size and shape to the bag. The bag and bricks provide a strong visual link. The hat wearing mannequins outside a clothes shop in Rhodes are

Finally, a plug for my fellow photographer, JJ Waller whose seafront xhibition next to the upside down house in Brighton is on show until mid September - so be quick if you’ve not seen it - and provides the subject for my third photograph here. His foreground photograph bears very similar colours to the upside down house and with a little patience, eventually a person dressed in red appeared in the background to complete the colour match I was looking for.

Author keeping it local with setting for new novel
Wendy Clarke, who resides in Steyning, West Sussex, has released her latest standalone novel, The Night Out.
This nail-biting and completely unputdownable psychological thriller was be published by Bookouture on June 8th and is available from Amazon in all formats.
The author has kept things local for her latest novel, setting the story in one of the large houses that are situated on the boardwalk on Shoreham seafront.
Wendy always creates evocative, mysterious settings, and the tall glass windows of the family home at the centre of The Night Out
is her most dramatic yet. Every scene takes place here, where the family think they’re safe, but they have no idea that on this strip on the Sussex coast, beside the crashing waves in the distance, they’re always being watched.
What readers are saying about The Night Out, ‘This book was amazing and I never saw the twists coming. Bravo, bravo!!!’, ‘Got sucked straight into this book. A real heart thumper.’ and Heart-pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat.’
