WHY IT COULD PAY TO USE YOUR 2023/24 TAX YEAR ALLOWANCES RIGHT NOW

The new tax year has only just started. Yet, making the most of your allowances now, rather than waiting until March 2024, could make sense. Read on to find out why.

When a new tax year starts on 6 April, many allowances reset. Using allowances could reduce your tax liability and improve your long-term financial security.

In the past, you may have waited until the end of the tax year to calculate how much of your allowances you’ve used and then potentially made the most of remaining allowances. However, taking some time to assess how you’ll use appropriate allowances now could be useful – here are four reasons why.

1. Avoid making last-minute decisions: If you wait until the end of the tax year, you may find you need to make decisions quickly. It could mean you overlook potential opportunities or choose an option that isn’t right for you. By going through your allowances now, you can give yourself plenty of time to understand how your decisions could affect your short- and long-term finances. Making use of allowances now also means you don’t have to worry about delays and a looming deadline.

2. Benefit from an extra 12 months of returns or interest: Do you want to boost your savings or

investments over 2023/24? Thinking about how allowances could help you reach your goal now could mean you benefit from an extra 12 months of interest or returns.

3. You can spread out contributions over the tax year: If you don’t have a lump sum available to use your allowances now, a plan at the start of the year can still be valuable. It means you could spread out contributions and make it part of your budget. Let’s say you want to add an extra £5,000 to your pension from your take-home pay this tax year. Rather than depositing a lump sum, setting a direct debit of around £420 each month can ensure you stay on track as it will become part of your regular outgoings.

4. Ensure your decisions reflect your goals throughout the year: Setting out how you want to use tax breaks this year can help ensure your financial decisions reflect wider goals. Reviewing your finances now is an opportunity to see what steps you can take to move closer to aspirations like retiring early, purchasing property, or lending financial support to loved ones. .

Who would help if you couldn’t manage by yourself?

Some of us may find it uncomfortable thinking about the future and what would happen if we lost mental capacity but turning our minds to it now, may prevent unnecessary distress for our loved ones in the future.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document appointing trusted relatives, friends or professionals to help manage your financial affairs and/or make decisions about your health and welfare if you become unable to make decisions for yourself.

You may be thinking “none of this affects me as I’m perfectly well” but the key thing to remember is, you can only set up LPAs when you have the mental capacity to do so.

There are two types of LPA, one for your property and financial affairs and the other for your health and welfare.

Property and financial affairs LPA - This allows you to choose one or more people to make decisions about money and property; for example, paying bills, collecting benefits, making investments, selling your home. This type of LPA can be used if you lose mental capacity but can also be used before if you give consent.

Health and Welfare LPA - This allows you to choose one or more people to make decisions about things like medical care and moving into a care home. There is also an option to give your attorneys authority to make decisions about life sustaining treatment. A health and welfare LPA can only be used if you lose mental capacity. Both types of LPA need to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be used.

A LPA allows you to plan in advance and allows you to maintain some control over decisions other people may have to make for you. It is an important document and you should take great care in choosing your attorney(s). They should be trustworthy and have the necessary skills to make the decisions you are entrusting to them.

If you do not have a LPA, someone may need to apply to the Court of Protection to be able to manage your affairs. This can be a costly and lengthy process and can be very stressful for those involved. You will not have control over who applies to the Court, which may result in someone you would not have chosen being in control.

If you would like any more information about LPAs then please feel free to contact Deanne Ferguson at Benfield Legal on 01273 013353 or email deanne@benfieldlegal.co.uk

Also to make sure you don’t go hungry throughout the day, several food Vans will also be onsite, providing Burgers, Street Food, Baked Potatoes, German Sausages, Donuts, Slushies and Ice Cream! What more could you want!?

This year, with the help of local advertisers (and for the first time since COVID), we have also printed 3,000 Family Fun Day Programmes. Many of these will be given out at the Shoreham Artisan Market on May 27th. Pop along to our stall (which we run every Artisan Market day), to collect one (that’s if you don’t get handed a copy by one of our volunteers already handing them out).

Whilst we run a whole host of activities throughout the year to raise funds for the community, this event is our biggest event of the year and takes a year to plan. We hope it will be a fantastic event for all the family to enjoy. Please show your support by coming along.

If you’d like to help us on the day, maybe putting up gazebo’s, making tea, serving cake, or helping on one of our many stalls (or even picking up after the Donkeys), please get in touch with us via our Facebook Page at www. facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.com. We are also seeking good condition Board Games for one of our stalls. If you have anything suitable, please bring them along to our stall at the next Artisan Market (on Saturday May 27th), or call us on 07513 107263 to arrange collection.

We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday the 4th June! Just keep your fingers firmly

Talbot Rothwell OBE

Talbot Nelson Conn Rothwell was born in Bromley, Kent on the 12th of November 1916. He was nicknamed ‘Tolly’ and educated at Cranleigh School, Surrey. Upon leaving school he was employed as a town clerk at Brighton Borough Council.

He then became a police officer in Palestine before returning to England and enlisting in the RAF.

During the Second World War as a pilot officer, Rothwell was posted to 224 Squadron Royal Air Force Coastal Command, based at RAF Leuchars, Fife in Scotland. On the 14th of June 1940 at 09.35 hours, as part of a crew of four, Talbot took off in a Lockheed Hudson bomber on a special coastal reconnaissance mission of Norway. At 11:30am local time the plane was reported shot down over the North West of Stavanger, Norway.

The aircraft had been hit by an exploding burst of flak fired by German Anti-Aircraft Artillery. Rothwell bailed out and was captured and imprisoned in the notorious Prisoner Of War camp Stalag Luft III in Germany.

In the camp, Talbot Rothwell met Peter Butterworth and they asked the camp commandant if they could set up a theatre to entertain the captive audience with comedy shows. The commandant gave his permission on the condition that Rothwell and Butterworth would give their word that they wouldn’t try to escape their imprisonment. Rothwell and Butterworth were also given permission to set up the theatre by senior British officer at Stalag Luft III, Herbert Massey. This was with the order to make any rehearsals and performances very noisy to mask the noise of other prisoners digging escape tunnels.

Talbot Rothwell wrote the camp concerts with Peter Butterworth, who took a starring role on stage. In the early hours of Friday the 24th of March 1944, 76 prisoners broke out of the camp in what became known as The Great Escape. This daring attempt to make a ‘home

run’ as it was called to a neutral country was completed by only 3 of the escapees. Talbot Rothwell and Peter Butterworth didn’t escape as they had promised the commandant that they wouldn’t try and they remained true to their word. In January 1945 the Soviet Army liberated Stalag III.

After the war Talbot Rothwell returned to England and wrote radio scripts for The Crazy Gang, Arthur Askey, Ted Ray and Terry-Thomas. He was also an acclaimed playwright with his play Queen Elizabeth Slept Here running for 349 performances at the Strand Theatre in London’s West End. He wrote scripts for the television show Mr Pastry and adapted the French detective novels Maigret for the BBC series. Rupert Davies, a fellow prisoner of Stalag III, who had also performed in the camp’s shows played Inspector Maigret.

Peter Butterworth auditioned to play himself in the film ‘The Wooden Horse’ about the other famous escape from Stalag III. A wooden gymnastic box had been placed in plain sight of the German guards in the camp compound. Peter had taken it in turns with other prisoners to vault the ‘horse’ while two prisoners inside dug an escape tunnel out of the camp. Peter wasn’t cast in the film and was told it was because “He didn’t look convincingly heroic or athletic enough.”

The Madonna, Fanny Cornforth The Magdalen, and the Femme Fatale

A talk by Daphne Lawson Monday 15 May 2023 at 10am

The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ

This talk explores the role of Victorian Women through Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Idealised images of women are seen in stark contrast to the fallen woman epitomised by that daughter of Steyning: Fanny Cornforth. Fanny’s relationship with Dante Gabriel Rossetti was as his muse and lover and her beauty transformed his art forever. Although he moved on to his Femme Fatale, Janey Morris, Fanny remained his companion until his death.

Daphne Lawson has a BA in Art History from London University and an MA from the University of Canterbury on Degas’s Public and Private Spectacle. Until 2021 she was the full time Art History Lecturer for The Bader International Study Centre, Herstmonceux Castle. There she taught courses and programmes

SWIM Camobodia, Saving Children from drowning

Every 4 hours, a child dies from drowning in Cambodia.*

My name is Conrad, I lead SWIM Cambodia, a UK charity, from my home office in Shoreham-by-Sea. I used to live and work in Cambodia with my family. The year we left we heard about a boy we knew called Ravi who was 12 years old. He was playing with friends in a canal when he drowned and later died. This led me to look into drowning prevention in Cambodia. Not seeing anything in place, I put together a proposal, a trustee board and trained a small team of Cambodian volunteers to teach Water Safety and CPR to children.

Since then, I have developed local partners to deliver teaching. SWIM Cambodia has educated over 7000 children and 1000 adults. We are developing local leadership and with funding we hope to employ Water Safety and Swimming teachers who are integrated into the school system; this will help us reach many more children. But we can only go ahead with this plan if we can raise sufficient funds. I especially need and value support with this, as I do this work voluntarily on top of my full-time job.

If you would like to support SWIM Cambodia by taking part or leading a fundraising event, or you would like to me to give a presentation about our work, please contact me.

Art Festival at St Mary de Haura

Art Exhibitions have been held annually at St Mary’s since 2006 (apart from a pause during the pandemic). They give local artists a chance to show their work and give people an opportunity to both view the art and look around this wonderful building.

This year our theme is ‘Sussex by the Sea’ and the exhibition will run from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 18th June:

• 11am-5pm Monday to Saturday

• 2pm-5pm on Sundays

Up to 2015 the exhibitions were an item in the Adur Festival, which covered a variety of events in the area including art, music, drama, poetry, dance and lectures. Many visitors from other towns took the two weeks for their holiday to be able to enjoy as many topics as possible. We still continue our exhibitions each year and are a venue on the Art Trail when it is organised by the Adur Art Collective.

The first exhibition, ‘Passed to the future’, was to celebrate the restoration of St Mary’s vaulted ceiling. Since then there has been

Dream Productions

Dream Productions, a local start up based in Upper Beeding, is excited to announce a series of tribute nights at The Shoreham Centre and The Henfield Hall.

The Adele Tribute and Beyonce Tribute at The Shoreham Centre and The Vegas lounge at The Henfield Hall are set to take place over the next few months, with a donation from ticket sales benefiting community trusts and local charities.

Each act has been carefully handpicked by Lucy Newton, founder of Dream Productions, who is no stranger to performing. Lucy started Dream Productions earlier this year and has previously enjoyed a successful 14-year career in Musical Theatre, playing roles such as Glinda in Wicked, Serena in Fame, Wendy-Jo in Footloose, and Eponine in Les Misérables alongside her sister, Tania Newton. Lucy's passion for the arts runs in the family, with her brother-in-law winning the Grand Final of Stars in their Eyes as crooner Bobby Darin and her nephew, Luke Newton, recently taking on the role of Colin Bridgerton, the 3rd Son in the Smash Netflix series 'Bridgerton'. Luke is also a local boy, attending Steyning Grammar school, and, like the rest of the Newton Family, was born and raised in Shoreham By Sea.

The Tribute nights promise to be fantastic

evenings, filled with entertainment and joy. Groups are also welcome to come along, sing, dance, and have a fabulous time.

"We're thrilled to bring these incredible tribute acts to our local community," said Lucy Newton. "Not only will attendees have a wonderful time, but they'll also be supporting local charities and trusts.

We're proud to be a part of this community, and we're excited to see everyone come together for these events."

Tickets for the Tribute nights are available now, and with limited capacity. So, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment. Don't miss out on the opportunity to have a great time while giving back to your community.

West Sussex school admissions

Children in Shoreham and all over the county and country received their secondary school offer on March 1st.

28 children from one Shoreham primary school alone and over 43 from the Shoreham area did NOT get any of their 3 preferred choices and were left completely devastated to have been offered a school outside of catchment and community, over 6 miles away in Worthing, which they knew nothing about. When the current year 6 cohort started school in

September 2016, the Shoreham primaries were already over capacity. See table below from WSCC Planning School Places doc - published March 2023:

WSCC have known for 7 years that the year 6 children currently in the primary system within Adur outnumbered secondary school places available and have been making written commitments to do something about it for many years.

'planned expansion of Sir Robert Woodard Academy from 240 to 300 pupils per year of entry from 2024 is being progressed by WSCC'.

This year they led everyone to believe that permanent expansion of SRWA would take place in time for the 2023/24 school year. This has not happened despite the Adur secondary schools already being well over

capacity since 2019 – see table below.

You can see in the graph below why parents and children from one Shoreham school expected to get into one of their catchment secondary school choices – historically they always have. It is unprecedented that this year, 28 children are being sent to a school in Worthing outside of Adur.

So, is this a failure of planning by WSCC or a deliberate strategy?

Parents Jade Sowa and Amy Boyse, together with Al Read (FAST founder member) organised a public meeting on March 14th, which was attended by over 200 people - the largest event of its kind in recent

memory. However, the decision by the Chief Executive of WSCC, Becky Shaw, to order her officers not to attend the meeting was very baffling. People now understand that this is an Adur/Shoreham district problem, not just an issue affecting one of two schools, or postcodes. This has nothing to do with what school your child goes to. It is entirely down to where you live.

Headteachers spoke at the public meeting, sharing the concerns they have around safety, well-being and physical space issues, with having so many kids being packed in so tightly. And that the solution isn't as straightforward as adding another Portakabin or two. Unless something changes, there will be fewer places next year than this year and there will be more pupils needing places. We still have not got the answers we need. Appeals take place in mid-June, so families have been left in limbo until then. It is having a huge impact on the children’s mental health and anxiety levels.

In the meantime, we have organised a protest on:

• May 13th in

• Shoreham, 10am.

• Meeting Point: Adur Rec Car park

• Finish: War memorial St Mary’s

FAST – Future of Adur Schools.

A group set up in 2016 with the goal being to see safe and appropriate long-term planning of school place provision in Adur, ensuring all operate at a safe and good level of capacity - including the opening of new schools.

Positive Space

Last month I wrote about negative space in art and photography.

This month’s article is about positive space. My image demonstrates how the negative space of the background wall sets the scene for the positive space of the painting and the viewer.

It is really about composition and juxtaposition of the elements within the frame. If I had cropped tight around the main subject (the positive space), it would have removed the sense of place which is important in the photograph as the painting sits within an exterior doorframe which is unusual. I’m sure that the artist chose the colours to contrast with the surrounding wall, which in my mind gives a neapolitan ice cream vibe. The muted coloured top worn by the viewer blends well with the background, her circular wicker bag adds curves to the straight horizontal and vertical lines beyond.

I positioned myself so that the staring eyes of the

painted figure appear to be looking directly into the camera. The viewer, as in most of my street photography, remains anonymous as the photograph is not intended as a portrait, it’s not about her, the main star is the painting and the unique space that it occupies within an urban environment. The viewer simply helps to set the scene and to introduce humanity with her interaction with the painted figure. Colour photographs can work well when

the palette is muted. A strong colour here would dominate the image.
