MISCONCEPTIONS MEAN THAT 40% OF HOMEOWNERS DON’T HAVE LIFE INSURANCE Do you have life insurance in place? A survey suggests that some homeowners are choosing not to take it out because of common misconceptions about how life insurance works. Life insurance would pay out a lump sum to beneficiaries if the policyholder passed away during the term. As a result, it can provide financial support to your loved ones when they need it most and ensure they don’t need to make large financial decisions when they are grieving.

Shoreham’s Amphibious Car In 1955, in Australia’s Snowy Mountains, Charles Vinten was invited by the Ministry of Fuel and Power, to observe engineering work on the Snowy River Scheme in Victoria. It was here, it was said, that Charles was inspired to design and build an amphibious car. This car would be capable of travelling anywhere, and could be used for rescue work during times of flooding. Charles was an instrument engineer. Having been founded in 1911, his family’s camera company had played a crucial role in the First World War. Charles’s father Bill had in 1915 invented the aerial reconnaissance camera. In the 1930s, W. Vinten Ltd. invented the duplicating machines that copied movies for distribution in the emerging cinema industry. Charles’s father Bill died in 1937, but his final invention was crucial to the Second World War. This was the HS-300 speed camera, capable of 300 pictures per second. Post war Charles was involved in the development of topsecret aerial reconnaissance cameras for spy planes in the jet age. Meanwhile his sister Maisie and brother Bill returned to the company’s pre-war work of inventing cameras and equipment for use in the movie and television industries. This included the camera equipment used by the BBC. In the 1960’s Charles Vinten worked with George Herbert Miles to invent his Hydrocar, along with the engineers from Miles Aviation and Transport Ltd. The company was based at Shoreham Airport where the Miles family had
been inventing, building and flying experimental aircraft since 1929. During the Second World War the company was involved in several top-secret projects at Shoreham Airport that George had test flown. The Hydrocar was built in the old Beagle Aircraft Ltd facilities at Shoreham. The half car half boat made its debut at the International Boat Show in London on the 5th of January 1966. The car was capable of cruising along a river at thirty miles per hour and in sea trials traversing waves of up to four feet high. On land its top speed was seventy-five miles per hour and its four-wheel drive made it capable of coping with rough terrain. Its car registration plate was ‘VIN 1’. It used twenty-six miles per gallon of fuel on land and twelve miles per gallon on water. The Hydrocar had a fibreglass body with a metal frame moulded into it. When it was on water the Hydrocar’s wheels retracted into the body like an aircraft’s undercarriage and the hull threw water inward in a continuous jet to make a cushion for the car to float on. The boat designer Colin Mudie had designed the unique hull. A rearmounted Porsche 107HP car engine

Shoreham’s Amphibious Car powered the Hydrocar for use on land. Propulsion and steering on water was by a rear mounted Perkins Mark 2 Z-Drive transom boat engine that was raised when the Hydrocar was on land. Two British manufacturers were interested in producing the vehicle. The Wildlife Division of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industries Research Organisation in Canberra ordered one and the retail cost was £3000. At Shoreham Airport Miles Aviation and Transport Ltd carried on designing building and flying experimental jets and propeller aircraft. Charles meanwhile continued to develop his Hydrocar. It was said to have many performance advantages over existing amphibious cars. It certainly captured the imagination of Eagle Comic readers
when they featured a detailed cutaway diagram of the Hydrocar ‘VIN 1’ in a 1966 issue. Judy Upton

The Queen in her own words Quiet, impeccably mannered, but always addressing with poise and precision, what Queen Elizabeth II says is always worth hearing. The Queen and Diana The idea that the Queen was in some way unapproving of Diana is one that has permeated the popular press and, it might be said, has left an indelible stain on the reputation of both. Yet many biographers have noted that the relationship between the two was excellent, even after the break-up of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles. “No one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. “She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys.” Serving her country Upon the Queen’s coronation, she declared herself fully at the service of the nation she was serving, as have all Monarchs coming to the throne. Coping with loneliness Loneliness can be experienced at any age or time in our lives. Sarah Goodman (BACP) counsellor at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains how it is important to separate loneliness frow being alone.
Loneliness is a lack or the feeling of a lack of connection with other people. There is not any one reason or trigger. It is affecting more and more people. Since the start of the pandemic, it has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health. You may feel lonely, even when amongst people, for many reasons. It could be that you don’t feel heard, understood, or you don’t believe you can be your true self around others. Feelings of loneliness may arise from lowered self-esteem, which may have roots in other life experiences.
Share your feelings if you can There is no shame to loneliness, it is something we all experience. Finding someone you trust with whom you can share your feelings, can alleviate the sense of isolation. Sarah offers caring, professional support to anyone suffering from loneliness or struggling with other mental health issues. Please get in touch to arrange a counselling session with Sarah Goodman at SOC on 01273 567654 or email us info@shorehamosteo.co.uk.
As we are all unique, there is not a simple ‘one fix’ solution. Even so, interaction with others can often help you to feel connected and begin to ease feelings of loneliness. Here are some small suggestions that may have huge benefits: Reach out to others A simple smile, a wave or “hello” to those we meet, even at the shops or on the bus, can make a big difference to us - and them. Keep in touch with people A friendly chat with anyone, however brief, can shift your mood – this might be in person or via messages, even a letter. Join a group Connecting with people who have a shared interest, hobby or activity can really help – whether in person or online. Do things you enjoy Spending time on things that bring you joy, perhaps something creative, can help to lift your mood and occupy your mind, and take the focus off the loneliness. Volunteers Week 2022 Welcome to Inside Volunteering where we aim to inspire you to give a little of your time and talent to help our local community. This month we’re celebrating National Volunteers’ Week: an annual celebration of volunteering that takes place across the UK from 1st to 7th June.
A time to say thanks. Every year people from all walks of life take time to volunteer, making a huge difference to our local community. Volunteers’ Week is a week dedicated to recognising their invaluable contribution and thanking them all for their time, energy, commitment, and skills: from the small scale, mutual-aid groups offering much-needed local support, to the thousands of voluntary and community groups, and the larger national organisations and programmes. Every kind of volunteer has helped our local community continue during an exceptionally difficult couple of years. It’s time to say thanks! Get involved
You don’t need to be part of a voluntary organisation or a volunteer yourself to get involved in Volunteers’ Week. You can show your appreciation by hosting a fundraising coffee morning for a local community group, giving a thank you card to a hard-working local volunteer or virtually applauding all volunteers with a post on social media.
This year’s Volunteers’ Week festivities also include The Big Jubilee Lunch, as it coincides with the Jubilee holiday weekend. What better way to thank the volunteers within your community than gathering them together for a picnic in the park or a neighbourhood BBQ. For Volunteers’ Week information and inspiration, go to: https://bhcommunityworks. org.uk/voluntary-sector/volunteering/volunteers-week-2022.
Volunteering is for everyone. Want to make a difference in your community? Community Works Volunteer Centre is here to help you get started. Visit volunteer. bhcommunityworks.org.uk to search for a local volunteer role. To arrange a chat with an adviser, call 01273 234023 or email volunteercentre@bhcommunityworks. org.uk.tary-sector/volunteering/volun-

Adur Art Club
The Adur Art Club was formed 50 years ago by artists Mollie Harvey, John Lingham, Ricky Hales and Ron Lines, it met in a small rented room in the Old School in Ham Road, Shoreham. Gradually people began to take interest in the group and joined, the room became too small for the numbers, so the founding members decided they needed a larger venue.
The club found its home at the new Shoreham Centre in Pond Road and the group was named the Adur Art Club. Over the years the club became one of the most prestigious in Sussex, at one time having more than 100 members of all ages, enjoying painting in all media.
The club meets every Thursday throughout
the year, holds art demonstrations and outings to venues of artistic interest. During the pandemic the club had to shut down, but most members have now returned and it is getting back on its feet. The club is proud of the fact that it is still running, Artists wishing to join the Adur Art Club are most welcome to come along and talk to the team.

Creative Selfies Selfies are very popular but I suspect that many people think the craze began with mobile phone cameras.
This is certainly not the case and there are many examples of ‘selfies’ dating back to 1839 when the first known photographic self portrait was taken by Robert Cornelius. Of course, painters have been producing self portraits since the early 15th century. Vivian Maier was an amateur photographer who has a fascinating story. Born in 1926, Vivian worked mainly as a carer in Chicago and spent much of her free time roaming the streets with
her camera. She was secretive about her hobby and her photographs were only discovered upon her death in 2009 when an estimated 150,000 negatives were discovered along with around 2000 prints, colour slides and dozens of home movies. When her images were made public online, they went viral and experts compared her work to some of the great street photographers of all time.
her life. Type her name into the search engine of your choice to find out more about her remarkable story. Among this vast archive of work were several selfies, mainly reflections in shop windows and mirrors but also pictures that include her shadow and the occasional posed shot. These alone were published in book form after her discovery. In most of these images, Vivian uses herself as just one element of the overall scene rather than vanity shots. In my opinion this creative approach is really interesting and has inspired me to experiment with this idea.
Here are shots of me in reflection and also my mysterious hooded shadow ! I make the choice of whether to include my camera or to disguise it by tucking it into my body and shooting from waist high. The surrounding scene is important in the Images as this gives a sense of place and suggests a

St Michael and All Angels Lancing’s service of Blessing the Boats will return to Beach Green on Sunday 5 June at 2.30 pm after a two-year hiatus caused by the global pandemic.
St Michael and All Angels Church have been organising the service for nearly thirty years. Originally an event that celebrated the historic Lancing fishing community, the service now recognises the different leisure pursuits which involve the sea and the Lancing community. The origin of the Blessing of Boats goes back to biblical days when many of the first followers of Jesus Christ were fishermen by trade. This year the event will also form part of Lancing’s celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration.
The service will be conducted by Father Felix Smith, Vicar of St Michael’s who said “We’re really looking forward to the return of Blessing the Boats. It is great that as a church we are able to offer this opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate this special place in which we live, especially in this special jubilee year. I’m looking forward to blessing as much as possible so we want to include everything that is used by people who use the sea so boats, kayaks, oars, sailing equipment, anchors, kites and boards are all welcome to be blessed. The more the

The boats will be blessed during the service, which will consist of hymns, prayers and a scripture reading. Each boat will then be sprinkled with Holy Water and a short prayer said for the safety of its users. The afternoon’s service will conclude with a concert by the Sir Robert Woodard Academy steel band after which Cream teas will be served in St Michaelâ’s Church Hall, South Street, Lancing. If the weather is wet or windy then the service will be held in St Michael and All Angels Church, South Street, Lancing. Have a local editorial item? email: insidemags@gmail.com

Sweaty feet
This month we are looking at and discussing the most weather appropriate issue of sweaty feet (Hyperhidrosis). This month we are looking at and discussing the most weather appropriate issue of sweaty feet (Hyperhidrosis). Most of us have suffered from foot perspiration and odour from time to time, yet for some people, sweaty feet are a persistent problem which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable.
There are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else in the body so it’s not surprising that this can cause foot problems such as foot odour and a greater risk of minor skin infections, through athlete's foot, or blisters. Hot weather can make matters worse, although sweaty feet
is a winter, as well as a summer, problem. It can also be an inherited condition or caused through hormonal changes.
If you are suffering with sweaty feet and their effects, why not make an appointment with our Podiatrist Karen, here at the First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, contact us on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic. co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk Photo credit::jacqueline macou from Pixabay
