Ropetackle becomes first Dementia-Friendly venue in Adur.

Ropetackle Arts Centre has been recognised by the Alzheimer’s Society as a Dementia Friendly venue; the first such venue in the Adur district.

Ropetackle Arts Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea

Ropetackle has been screening relaxed and friendly films – ‘specially designed for those with memory loss or dementia, with refreshments included and carers going free – since 2019, and are now into their third season. Alongside this, Ropetackle has been following Alzheimer’s Society guidance to create a dementia-friendly environment for visitors.

The relaxed and friendly films have proven a success. They are specially chosen to revive precious memories and feature lots of music, dance, and colour. Recent films include Singin’ in the Rain, Gigi, and Summer Holiday.

The Alzheimer’s Society has provided vital support to Ropetackle throughout, including training a dedicated band of volunteers, providing guidance on creating a dementia friendly environment, and publicising the screenings.

Janice Langley (Chair – Adur Dementia Friendly Communities) recently presented Mark Phillips (Centre Manager –Ropetackle Arts Centre) with a certificate recognising the Dementia Friendly status, and Ropetackle’s commitment to becoming more dementia friendly.

Janice Langley said: “Most of us enjoy the opportunity to appreciate the world beyond our day-to-day existence. This might be a trip to the theatre or visiting our local cinema, or it could be attending a music concert or marvelling at works of art in a gallery. Ropetackle is providing such an

opportunity for the people of Adur.”

Mark Phillips said: “We are delighted to be recognised as the first Dementia-Friendly venue in Adur. It is a testament our commitment to being as accessible and inclusive as possible, and the hard work of the volunteers and film committee who have lead the efforts to become dementia friendly. As the first such venue in Adur, we hope to inspire others to follow suit as well as provide further opportunities for those with memory loss or dementia to engage with our programme and enjoy the arts.”

If you would like to sponsor the next series of Relaxed and Friendly Films, or donate to the Ropetackle Arts Centre itself, please contact Mark Phillips at centremanager@ ropetacklecentre.co.uk for more information.

Just as not all used cars are the same you will realise that not all used car dealers are the same. Regardless of the car you buy, most independent ‘dealers’ will offer you a warranty which is not fit for purpose either because it is too short or it doesn’t cover important items on your car. ANNUITY RATES SOAR 52% IN 2022 AND COULD PROVIDE SECURITY AMID UNCERTAINTY

Annuity rates are rising, and they could provide retirees with a way to create a secure income during times of volatility and high inflation.

An annuity is an insurance product you purchase with a lump sum that will then deliver a regular income. At retirement, you can purchase an annuity that will then deliver an income for the rest of your life. Annuity rates increased by 52% in the first 9 months of 2022

When calculating the income an annuity will provide, the rate will have a direct effect. Let’s say you are offered an annuity rate of 5%. It means that if you purchased an annuity with £100,000, it’d deliver an income of £5,000 a year. In the last year, annuity rates have soared, and it means your retirement savings could go further. According to Canada Life, annuity rates have hit a 14-year high. They increased by 52% in the first nine months of 2022.

2 reasons why an annuity could make sense during uncertain times

1. An annuity can provide an inflation-linked income Recent high levels of inflation have placed pressure on some retirees. While not all annuities are linked to inflation, those that are can be valuable by helping you to maintain your spending power. During uncertain times, this could provide peace of mind.

2. Your savings won’t be exposed to market volatility

A common alternative to an annuity is flexi-access drawdown. With this option, your savings will usually remain invested, and you can take an income to suit you. This means your savings remain exposed to investment volatility. An annuity means you don’t need to worry about investment volatility or manage investments during retirement.

3 reasons why an annuity may not be right for you

1. An annuity is less flexible than other options When you purchase an annuity, it will deliver an income for the rest of your life. This can be valuable, but it’s not flexible.

2. You will need to pay fees when choosing an annuity When you purchase an annuity, there are likely to be fees involved. This could reduce your income so it’s important to be aware of them and shop around for a deal that suits you.

3. There will be no chance of investment growth When you purchase an annuity, there is no opportunity for your retirement savings to grow further through investing.

Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk if you would like more information and quote reference PFSIS. Further increases in inflation may reduce the purchasing power of a fixed income and the capital will be lost upon death unless certain guarantees are selected at outset.

Will Evans

William Edward Evans was born in London on the 29th of May 1866. His father Frederick was a well-known clown and acrobat whose pantomime troupe toured the country.

Will Evans made his stage debut at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on the 26th of December 1881, as an animal impersonator in the pantomime ‘Robinson Crusoe.’

From 1897, Will appeared in a comedy double act with his friend and straight man Arthur Conquest. Their comedy sketches ‘Building a Chicken House’, ‘Whitewashing The Ceiling’ and ‘Papering a House’ brought fits of laughter to many a music hall audience. In 1899, Will Evans became one of the first film stars, making short silent, comic films with the Warwick Trading Company. These were ‘They Do Such Things At Brighton’, ‘Let ‘Em All Come Will Evans’ and ‘Comet Solo’. He also performed acrobatics, tumbling in and out of shot in ‘The Music Eccentric’ causing much hilarity in audiences.

In 1914, Evans lived in what was known as ‘bungalow town’ on Shoreham beach. His bungalow was named ‘Hop O’My Thumb.’ Will built bungalows on the north side of Old Fort Road as both holiday lets and extra accommodation for his family and friends. The bungalows were named ‘The Baroness’, ‘Puss In Boots’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and the ‘Swallow’ after the theatre shows Will had starred in.

With his neighbours, Arthur Conquest, the actor George Graves and set designer Francis Leonard Lyndhurst, Will Evans founded the Sunny South Film Company. The old Napoleonic fort on Shoreham Beach was used as an open-air film studio with a stage and painted backdrop constructed on its parade ground. Four 15-minute comedy films were produced.

‘Building A Chicken House’ was an adaption of the Evans and Conquest music hall sketch. The other films were ‘The Jockey’, ‘Harnessing a Horse’ and ‘The Showman’s Dream.’ In ‘The Showman’s Dream’ Will Evans played a professor who dreamt that his circus had caught fire leading to the escape of a tiger. Lyndhurst used smoke bombs to simulate the fire. Arthur Conquest, wearing a tiger skin, ran amok through Old Shoreham, reaching the thatched post office on the junction of Connaught Avenue and Upper Shoreham Road. The ‘tiger’ then ran into the cottage and jumped into bed with an old lady played by Will Evans’ nephew Joe. It then chased the lady from the cottage to the Red Lion pub, just as a drunk who was not part of the film left the premises. The drunk was so surprised to see what he thought was an actual a tiger that he fled along the Steyning Road pursued by Arthur who

End musicals such as ‘After the Girl’, ‘Halfpast Eight’ and ‘We’re All In It.’ In 1922 he became a playwright and actor with his play ‘Tons of Money’ running for 737 performances in London. Then in 1924, Will co-wrote with R. Guy Reeve the play the ‘The Other Mr. Gibbs.’ ‘Tons of Money’ was adapted twice for cinema. Will Evans died in his London home on the 11th of April 1931, aged 64.

Christmas Cheer

A family-run Sussex garden centre has been busy donating festive trees to local charities.

Mayberry Garden Centre in Portslade has been spreading Christmas cheer in the local community with fresh, British-grown trees given to Southwick Methodist Church, Fishersgate Community Centre, and Mill View Hospital’s Brunswick Ward.

“We chose a drop-resistant traditional Nordmann tree because it will look good and not make a mess”, said the garden centre’s plant manager Michael Leach who made the deliveries which were warmly received.

At Southwick Methodist Church, a grateful Juliet Scarratt said: “Our Christmas Tree is a community tree where we invite people to bring decorations to place on it. This year we will have lights on the tree, so making it more visible and attractive at night.”

Jo Marshall-Inns Fishersgate Community Centre said how the donated tree will make a huge difference to the local community. “We have people of all ages through the doors and are opening as a Warm Space, too”.

At the 15-bed Brunswick Ward for dementia patients of Hove’s Mill View Hospital, Gillian Sarjudeen commented: “This lovely tree will help our patients to be orientated to the time of year as well as have increased well-being over the Christmas period. A real Christmas tree provides them with a positive sensory experience of sight, touch and smell, at a time when they be missing familiar home environments and family.

“Last year one patient who rarely interacted with others and was quite withdrawn began spontaneously speaking about the Christmas tree.”

UNATTACHED PEOPLE LOOK TO THE NEW YEAR FOR

BEGINNING

Many people find that those weeks after Christmas and New Year pro- vide a time to reflect and make decisions about changes they would like in their lives.

The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women aged 55+, has venues in Worthing, Burgess Hill, Brighton, Lewes and Horsham. The Group isn’t a dating agency but it does offer a great opportunity to meet new friends of both sexes in a welcoming atmosphere.

Tricia Bentley, co-founder

of The Group, explains, “It can seem daunting but actually it isn’t.

Once people cross the threshold, meet our members, and see our diary, they usually become actively involved with our events. And we have a great time. So my message would be “Push open that door, come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome.” There are walks, pub evenings, theatre trips, golf, galleries, lunches and dinners, live music, holidays,

and much more.

The Group has been going for 17 years and has over 300 members. The Group’s website www.thegroup.org. uk tells you everything you need to know. Going into a room full of people you don’t know can be difficult, but not with The Group. You’ll get a good welcome. Where do they meet? Take a look at www. thegroup.org.uk

President of Royal College of Ophthalmologists opens unique hospital-based art gallery

A unique art gallery enjoyed by thousands of eye care patients in Sussex has been officially opened by the President of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Professor Bernard Chang.

“Chaos of Creation” is the first exhibition from Sooffee Art Gallery, an initiative borne from the passion and philosophy of ophthalmic surgeon and photographer Mr Masoud Teimory.

“Sooffee aims to showcase the beauty of ‘chaos’ through visual arts and poetry,” said Mr Teimory, “and at the same time provide thought-provoking artworks for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy.”

The exhibition is hosted by University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust eye care units at Southlands Hospital, in Shoreham-by-Sea, and St Richard’s Hospital, in Chichester. A stunning collection of images are displayed on the walls of the waiting areas and corridors of the departments that welcome and care for more than 100,000 patients every year.

Professor Chang was invited to officially open the integrated Sooffee Art Gallery at Southlands Eye Care on a visit to the purpose-built £7.5 million department, that was formally opened by Duchess of Wessex in May 2018.

The President said: “What Masoud has done here is incredible. Everything about this unit is designed to improve patient care, efficiency, and ultimately patient experience.

“It is a real privilege to have the honour of opening the art gallery and it is great for the Royal College to see what has

been achieved here through collaboration –this truly is an inspirational build that other units in the country can follow.”

The Sooffee Art Gallery includes many photographs that Masoud himself has taken, as well as other exhibits from renowned artists, such as photographer and local eye care patient Marilyn Stafford, calligrapher Einodin Sadeghzadeh, oil painter Mona Mohagheghi, and medical photographer Jon Brett.

Professor Chang added: “I love the fact that every picture tells a story. At first glance it may seem chaotic, but it has a form of order within it. The human brain looks for symmetry and it is actually in every picture.”

Telling the story behind each picture and bringing the “Chaos of Creation” exhibition to life for patients is the responsibility of curator Nina Emett, from notfor-profit organisation FotoDocument.

Nina said: “The theme at its simplest is about the eye, how the eye sees, what it sees and what it doesn’t see. How do we interpret the world around us?

“We seek symmetry and that has a harmonising, and calming effect on the brain, and this is what Masoud’s photography achieves.” The official opening was also

wa reunion for many of the people involved in the development of Southlands Eye Care, from suppliers and project managers to patient representatives and staff.

Mr Teimory acknowledged and thanked everyone who supported his vision of creating a cutting-edge and innovative new eye care department in West Sussex.

This included the Trust’s former chief executive, Dame Marianne Griffiths, director of capital Robert Cairney and architect Richard Mason, as well as charity partners Love Your Hospital and the Friends of Chichester and Southlands Hospitals.

Dame Marianne said: “This eye unit and gallery is testament to you Masoud, for your vision, persistence and relentless ambition for this to be a state-of-the art facility – you have achieved it, congratulations!”

Diffusion, Distortion and Creativity

I recently heard a local photographer say that it is pointless to take photographs from Brighton’s i360 because the pod shaped glass creates distortion. something of interest.

I was amazed at this statement because, to me, a distorted view of reality is often far more interesting than a factual image. It can be imaginative, creative and thought provoking.

Photographers have been manipulating their images for many years even in the days of film development and darkroom printing.

These days, the most commonly used camera is a smart phone which offers many in built filters to alter your image before or after taking. They are a matter of taste but their presence shows that many people

are interested in manipulating their pictures. Although almost all of my images go through a little post processing, I prefer to seek out ways to enhance my photographs by finding situations that lend themselves to a creative approach.

I often photograph through glass or into shop windows to create reflections or to diffuse the scene to add a little twist to the reality. The image here was taken from the i360 through that curved pod glass which adds reflections and positioning my camera to en-

hance the distortion which transforms the straight boards on the ground into a pleasing wavy pattern. The incomplete circle of the seating and the small girl appear unaffected by this process. The darkened tint of the glass pod also has an effect on the colours but the image works well in monochrome as well as in colour.

Diabetes Screening Update

Adur East Lions Club, which covers Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate, ran their first Diabetes Screening Event on Saturday 12th November.

The event took place at the Co-op Community Space in Shoreham and 137 people were tested by medical professionals from Event Medic Services, based in Lancing. The two paramedics did an impressive job from 10am to 4pm and of the 137 people tested, two were referred to their GP’s for further investigation. The Event was supported by volunteer Lions not only from Adur East, but also other Clubs from the region, including a virtual Club called SEBI and NPS (Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford) Lions Club.

Helped by an eagle-eyed volunteer (who spotted them in the High Street), Adur East Lions were able to test not only the Mayor of Worthing, Henna Chowdhury, but also the Chairman of Adur District, Councillor Andy McGregor, as can be seen in the photo, together with Zone Chair, Claudine Rogers and NPS Lions, Colin Clarke and Terry Dezille.

The Diabetes Screening event was part of a wider Project to run Diabetes Screening in all the Clubs within an area known as 'Zone 2A', this includes Adur East, Brighton, NPS and R&S (Rottingdean & Saltdean) Lions Clubs. Brighton Lions are the next Club aiming to run the event and this is likely to be at the end of January in Whitehawk. Due to declining membership numbers, not all Clubs feel they have sufficient members to run the event, so the Project aims to ensure all Clubs support the non-medical manpower needed. Members of Adur East Lions have already volunteered to help Brighton Lions run their event. By working together to put on these

events, it is hoped that Clubs can also consider other types of testing which they might not have previously been able to run, such as Melanoma or Prostate Screening.

St Mary de Haura churchyard – history beneath our feet

Situated in the historic centre of the town, surrounding St Mary de Haura church, the churchyard is one of the most popular public spaces in Shoreham, with a steady footfall of locals and visitors wishing to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of its surroundings.

But have you ever thought about what lies beneath your feet as you crisscross the churchyard? Remarkably, for most of its history, no systematic records were kept of its contents. This changed in the early part of the 21st century, when the church

contacted Atlantic Geometrics, a survey company developing a ‘Burial Ground Management System’ (BGMS), one of the first attempts to systematically survey and digitally archive UK churchyards and burial sites.

Research began in earnest in 2018 led by Keith Bennett, a member of the congregation at St Mary de Haura who took on the voluntary role of Graveyard Research Officer. Using a satellite map of the churchyard provided by Atlantic Geometrics, Keith was able to locate every gravestone, vault, monument, cremation plaque, bench and memorial window on the church site. But problems soon

arose. It became obvious that a lack of records (lost in the 19th century) and the weathering and erosion of the gravestones and vaults would make it impossible to identify many of those buried. Of the 351 graves and vaults recorded, 151 burial sites had to recorded as UNKNOWN. Yet the identity of those whose cremated remains lie in the churchyard were easier to identity: of the 180 cremation sites, only two had no markings. Many hours of painstaking research revealed further clues about the lives and histories of those identified. As of the time of writing, 1250 records have been placed on the BGMS website, providing a reliable digital archive of generations of Shoreham history. And the work continues!

So next time you’re crossing the churchyard, perhaps you might ponder the rich history and extraordinarily varied lives of those who lie buried beneath. And if your interest takes you further, why not join the Friends of St Mary de Haura? By supporting the Friends, you will be supporting the ongoing work of our Graveyard Research Project as we seek to preserve and archive Shoreham’s buried heritage for generations to come.

REMINISCENCE

I recently renewed my membership of the Sussex Yacht Club after many years, I was a member in 1958 aged 16 and raced our Enterprise dinghy with my Father Patrick Hyne.

I saw they had named the new clubs restaurant Stows after the boatyard which is the site of the SYC now and it reminded me of my dad telling me of the time he worked for Harry Stow for a number of years, before joining the Merchant service and later the Royal Navy.

I recall how he told me of the time he rode into the countryside on the back of Harry Stows motorbike to select tree branches that had grown into the correct shape for knees and stems for large vessels and dinghies as in those days they didn’t have the technology to laminate and steam them to shape.

I have included a couple of pictures during that time. One is of Harry Stow helming his

16ft dinghy named Faith with my dad and is friend Cyril Turner crewing for him. The other photo was taken inside the big old tin shed which was on the site of Stows yard, on back of the old photo dad wrote [ 1937 running the lead keel for the EUDROMA [a 58 ton auxiliary ketch 58 x 16 ft] at that time dad was 23 years old. I checked and found the Eudroma was still on charter in the Caribbean in 2020 they certainly made them to last in those days. This was not meant to be of an in depth piece of history just a personal reminiscence.

Community Warm Spaces open up in Adur and Worthing

Warm Spaces offer people who are worried about the rising cost of energy bills not only the chance to keep warm, but also aim to reduce social isolation with group activities or a welcome cup of tea.

Already, several Warm Spaces have opened their doors to visitors thanks to funding from Adur & Worthing Councilswith more set to open soon.

A handy map of all the Warm Space venues across Adur and Worthing is now available to view on our website - meaning residents can easily find one close to where they live:

The map will also include the locations of Warm Spaces in libraries run by West Sussex County Council and those set up without funding from the Councils. The map will be continuously updated as more Warm Spaces open up - and Adur & Worthing Councils want to help fund lots more.

Grants of up to £500 are available to community groups that have a venue suitable for use as a Warm Space. The money can be used to help offset expenses like energy costs, staff and volunteer costs or the purchase and hire of equipment.

Community groups can find out more about Warm Spaces Grants and how to apply: Cllr Kevin Boram, Adur's Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing, said:

“With cost of living pressures continuing to rise, we know that many people in our community are worried about being able to heat their homes. It's great to see that

so many community groups have risen to the challenge and opened up their venues as Warm Spaces. We want to continue funding these valuable spaces and are encouraging more community groups to apply for funding. These venues will also be able to provide advice and a great place to meet up and chat.”

Cllr Carl Walker, the Deputy Leader of Worthing Borough Council, said:

“The Warm Spaces that have opened up so far are doing a fantastic job of keeping people warm this winter, but because they are run by community groups that also offer activities, they are helping to reduce social isolation too. This new map offers people the chance to find a Warm Space close to home and also make new connections within their community. We would welcome anyone who wants to set up a space to contact us and we'll support our community groups to do this. A huge thanks to all those who have come forward to help.”

With escalating homelessness and the harshness of winter approaching, Sussex charity

Turning Tides have just secured permission for a ground-breaking and innovative new service to support people who are experiencing homelessness. The charity is now appealing for public support as they strive to raise £210k to complete and open the service – which is unique and unprecedented in Sussex – in time for winter.

Turning Tides, currently marking its 30th year, runs over 35 different projects across the county –this new service will be unlike any other provision within the wider regional homeless sector.

The project will be in the Horsham district, on 6 acres of land, in a rural area of outstanding national beauty. The service will provide high-support accommodation for up to 50 people at a time alongside a range of on-site facilities providing an innovative holistic approach supporting people to rebuild their lives after the trauma of homelessness. The service will be located at Roffey Place, a former bible college, which is being leased to Turning Tides. The charity is now racing to extensively refurbish and recreate the site, which has been unoccupied and vandalised, to provide this pioneering and transformative service in time for Christmas.

With public support, Turning Tides believe they can open the project in mid-December –providing vital services as the cost-of-living crisis accelerates homelessness. They are appealing for the public to urgently help with financial donations, volunteering, and essential items to help furnish the site. [https://www. turning-tides.org.uk/roffey-place –page will be live from Wednesday onwards]. They are also recruiting keyworkers and specialists for the new project and welcome applications from people who

may not have historically worked in a homelessness service but have transferable skills and wish to make a difference.

Roffey Place will include 24hour onsite support, including mental health and counselling, medical help via a clinical room, substance misuse specialists, a wellbeing and sensory suite, digital inclusion, help with training, employment and managing finances, a commercial kitchen to learn cooking skills, carpentry, craft and furniture renovation workspaces, outdoor therapy spaces, gardening skills, an allotment, beehives, yoga, mindfulness and more. Residents are anticipated to stay for approximately 6-9 months and then move on to independent living or a lower support service.

John Holmstrom, Chief Executive, explains: ‘This is a visionary new model made possible by the uniqueness of the site - the size and space allow us to create a multi-agency service that will amount to a holistic range of services strengthening people on every level.”

Permission for the project has just been granted by Horsham District Councillors and Horsham District Council are key partners in the project. Horsham District Council have supported the application from inception and are instrumental in bringing it to fruition. Council staff across teams and at all levels have pulled out all the stops to work rapidly with Turning Tides as part of their ongoing commitment to support local people experiencing homelessness. Horsham District Council are helping with some of the costs by committing £100k and the charity are seeking support to raise a further £210K. Roffey Place is owned by Kingdom Faith Church. Having not used the building for some months they are leasing it to Turning Tides to put the building to good use for the community.

This summer, Turning Tides launched a mobile community hub, a converted double decker bus, to combat this growing issue. Ruth Poyner, Head of Communications at the charity, says: ‘For people who live in these affluent areas, it is so easy to think homelessness isn’t an issue on their doorstep – but it is. On top of this, people sleeping rough in the countryside have often experienced multiple and prolonged disadvantages throughout their lives. It is precisely this traumatic history that can make a person deliberately seek out a remote and hidden rural location. Some of our most beautiful rural settings are hiding some of our most inneed local people.’

Frank, who has been supported by Turning Tides, says he struggled to survive rough sleeping in the countryside: ‘There are so many things to overcome. Getting water, getting food, and keeping warm can be really hard. The basic one is water - I had to walk to petrol stations and would drink the water supply used for car radiators. At one point, I drank pond water and ended up in hospital. In the countryside and in the woods you are away from everything. You are isolated and become a little bit feral. You can become really scared of other human beings – you completely withdraw into yourself. The isolation can be overwhelming.’

Andy, who also slept rough, says: “Turning Tides offer so much. They have been so helpful and understanding and through the charity I feel I have grown. I have a much better life now than I had before. It is the ongoing support that makes all the difference. It is fundamental and helps people to keep moving forwards.’

The cost of living crisis is bringing rapid rises in people experiencing homelessness. Turning Tides are seeing increased need at their services and as reported by the Guardian nationally homelessness is expected to rise by a third.
