Make volunteering your New Year’s resolution Welcome to Inside Volunteering where we hope to inspire you to volunteer a little of your time and talent to help our local community. The new year is a great opportunity to set new habits and break old ones. Many of us make resolutions to improve our physical health but forget about taking care of our mental health. The NHS has identified five steps you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing and volunteering is a great way of achieving these. Let’s look at each and see how volunteering can help. Step 1: Connect with other people When you volunteer you join a community of likeminded individuals working towards a common goal. You’ll get to meet new people and share in their experiences. Step 2: Be physically active Volunteering helps get you off the couch and out and about! There are many roles to get you closer to nature too. Step 3: Learn new skills Many volunteering roles give you the chance to learn new skills, and you might even be able to help others learn something new too!

Volunteer Centre is here to help you get started. Visit volunteer.bhcommunityworks.org.uk to search for a local volunteer role. To arrange a chat with an adviser, call 01273 234023 or email : volunteercentre@bhcommunityworks.org.uk.

Step 4: Give to others Volunteering is a fantastic way to give something back to your community, and many volunteers say this is the best thing about what they do. Step 5: Pay attention to the present moment Volunteering is a great way to step out of your normal routine and appreciate those things you don’t always notice. Check out some of the great opportunities on the Community Works website and get volunteering today! Volunteering is for everyone. Want to make a difference in your community? Community Works

Youth Section Christmas Training Day and Foodbank Collection Shoreham Sunday 19th of December 2021: Shoreham Under 13’s

The 19th of December saw the last coming together of the Shoreham RFC youth section before the Christmas break. As with the previous year a collection for the Shoreham Foodbank was arranged by the youth section looking to their members and the greater community to donate towards a worthy cause at this giving time of year.

If you would like to come down or require further information:Please follow us @ … https://fb.me/ShorehamRFCYouth https://instagram.com/ShorehamRFCYouth https://twitter.com/ShorehamRFCYth As we celebrate our 30 year anniver

The event saw good attendance with a generous amount of donations collected which will bring some help to those less fortunate in our community and the children were happy with the sweety gifts given by the club. The volunteers did well to put on bacon baps, hotdogs and hot chocolate along with the already planned mulled wine and mince pies. The day also brought some good news for the girls section as they received their much awaited new kit sponsored by Shiny Bomb. Thank you for your support and donations. Merry Christmas to you everyone and a Happy New Year. See you all in January. Remember the first training day back is the 9th of January. “I would like to thank all the volunteers that make it possible to run this community rugby club, that has grown every year. As we celebrate our 30 year anniversary the club has 2 successful senior sides, a growing youth section with fantastic new sponsors and a brand new Girls section. Thank you to all the players, parents and carers that support us.”

Happy New Year from St Mary’s Church Before I was appointed vicar here in 2012, I came for a “recce” one November day in 2011 to have a look at the town. Like many people who don’t live here, I didn’t know Shoreham by Sea at all – living in Chichester it was a place I had bypassed a few times on the way to Brighton. Visiting the two magnificent churches of St Nicolas and St Mary de Haura, walking across the old wooden bridge and along the beach to the wonderfully positioned Church of the Good Shepherd by the sea, and taking in the houseboats, the river, Lancing College and the hills beyond, I began to hope and pray this would be my next posting. To my delight it was and I have had the privilege and joy of serving in this amazing community for nearly ten years. It is time for me to move on now. I am retiring to Worcester at the end of January where I hope to continue my ministry by helping out in the local churches as and when needed. It will be a real wrench to leave this community where I have made so many friends and been made so welcome but I have lots of good memories which will always be with me. I thought I would use this space to answer a few questions I have been asked many times over the years: “Who was St Mary de Haura?” The church is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus, like so many churches up and down the country. “De Haura” means of the harbour and reminds us of its position so close to the sea – a busy port town in past times. “Is it alright for me to come into the church even if I am not a regular churchgoer?” The answer to that is a resounding yes! The church is there for everyone and if you think

about it, there are very few places you can sit undisturbed and for free these days. I am still surprised by how many people say to me that they have lived in Shoreham for years but never been inside the church. Why not pop in next time you are walking through the churchyard? “What’s the best thing about being a vicar?” Well where do I start? I love the fact that it brings me into contact with so many people in Shoreham, of all different backgrounds, beliefs and experience, often walking with them through the best or most difficult of times. I love the fact that we have this beautiful churchyard in the centre of town – a real meeting place for people and always busy. I counted how many people use it in a day once and it was in the thousands! And I love the fact that St Mary’s is right at the heart of the town and in addition to worship is so well used for such a variety of events, pandemic allowing! For me, St Mary’s is a reassuring presence in the town with a great sense of the spiritual and God. My hope and prayer for you all as we start another year is that this may help you find both peace, and comfort in our busy world. Happy New Year and God bless, Ann Are you a Friend of St Mary’s? Sadly, the game took a nasty turn as, following a really strong run down the left wing, Riley fell awkwardly under a tackle and had to retire with a nasty injury. After a few more substitutions, we again lost the ball and Crawley retook the lead. The end-to-end action continued, however, as Finn made some useful passes coming on at scrum half and the team combined well, with Martin doing some great work to set up Pablo

The spectators were highly entertained, which kept the cold out. Hot dogs were enjoyed afterwards and the game was played in an excellent attitude by both sides. It was noticeable that almost all of our tries were scored as team efforts, which is a credit to how well the boys have been responding to their coaches. Filo was awarded our Man of the Match by the Crawley team and our best wishes go to Riley for a speedy recovery – we all hope to see him back charging down the wing after Christmas. Sea Lions versus U-boats In 1916, during the First World War, German U-boat naval submarines were successfully blockading Britain and sinking thousands of tons of merchant shipping. With the country on the verge of starvation because of the loss of food imports that were ending up at the bottom of the sea, the Royal Navy were desperate to counter the threat. The Woodward brothers Joseph and James had a touring sea lion show that entertained audiences at theatres and public swimming pools. These sea lions juggled balls on their noses and rode bicycles and shook flippers with newspaper reporters. The Woodwards approached the Admiralty suggesting that their sea lions could detect the underwater sound of a U-boat. The sea lions it was proposed, would swim to the U-boat and fix a flotation buoy to its hull allowing for the Royal Navy to track the submerged enemy. Sea lions have excellent underwater vision and hearing and can swim at twenty-five miles per hour and dive to a depth of 1,000 feet. The sea lions would be akin to sniffer dogs. The Admiralty’s Board of Invention and Research considered the proposal more viable than the bizarre alternative plan put forward by Thomas Mills. Mills, a gold prospector from Australia intended to train seagulls to detect U-boats. In experiments sausage-meat was remotely jettisoned from dummy periscopes towed behind a ship. However the project was flawed, as sea gulls are coastal birds that rarely venture far out to see. After being fed sausage-meat however it was reported that they began to raid the high street butchers of the towns near to where the experiments were carried out. Joseph Woodward was given the honorary commission of Captain in the Royal Navy. The sea lions were muzzled before feeding to get them to respond to sounds underwater,

while ignoring the fish around them. The first stage of the trial was in a Westminster swimming pool on the 23rd of February 1917. An audience of admirals and scientists were impressed that sea lions named Barker and Queenie investigated underwater noise and were rewarded with herrings. Woodward had numerous sea lions in his touring show and they were taken to Lake Bala in Gwynedd, Wales for U-boat detection training. The initial results were promising and the sea lions returned to their home on the south coast for open water trials. However they failed to located a submerged Royal Navy submarine at sea because despite being muzzled so they couldn’t feed, the sea lions were distracted by fish. The sea lions disappeared for several hours. The Royal Navy abandoned the sea lions versus U-boats project idea in favour of the newly invented hydrophone as a means of detecting the submerged enemy. In 1918 the war came to an end. Woodwards Limited was based at the harbour at Kingston-bySea, between Shoreham and Southwick. It had a giant swimming pool for the sea lions that ran alongside the wharf of Beves & Co. timber merchants. The sea lions attracted both visitors and the locals of Shoreham to watch their antics. Sea Lions versus U-boats lion that had served briefly in the Royal Navy as a U-boat hunter, jumped over the eight foot galvanised iron fence. He dived into the harbour and was never seen again. In 1921 the Woodward’s Joseph and James continued to use the honorary rank of Captain when promoting their original performing seals and ‘The Actual Admiralty U-boat Hunting Sea lions.’ They appeared at the Waverley Carnival in Edinburgh and at the Hippodrome theatre in Brighton and also in London. In the same year, Jellicoe the sea lion rode a motorcycle and sidecar containing a child passenger through the streets of Birmingham. Jellicoe delighted the crowds as he sounded the motorcycle horn to warn them to stay out of his way. He made his way to deliver a cheque containing the proceeds of a charity performance to the offices of the Birmingham Mail. He was photographed

and featured in the newspaper on the 14th of January 1921. Today, little remains to show that performing sea lions could once be found at Shoreham Harbour. Judy Upton

Colour for Impact A happy New Year to you all. It may be grey outside but I thought, instead of writing about low light photography I would brighten the mood with saturated colour. I will admit that the best time of year for capturing images such as the ones that appear on this page would be the Summer months that offer strong sunlight to bring colours alive. However, even some winter days are bright enough even though the days may be short. Many images that rely on saturated colour for their impact are cropped in tightly to focus purely on the colour rather than expand the full scene but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Look for single dominant colours, contrasting or complementary colours or for even more impact, clashing colours. Repeating colours in the same frame can also work well. The main skill here is not just to ‘look ‘ but to ’see’. In photography, ‘seeing’ is the ability which is most likely to improve your photographs. Anyone can take a photo, it’s a mechanical process where you point the camera and press the shutter button but the art is in the ‘seeing’ and the appreciation of what may interest a viewer for whatever reason. Tastes vary, of course, but if you can please yourself first then you are likely to find others that also find merit in your pictures.

Work of art remembers Covid patients Lives lost to Covid and the impact on all those left behind have been commemorated in a work of art, created entirely from the˜Shared Hearts” sent in to the NHS from members of the public during the first wave of the pandemic.

Back in April 2020, patient experience and critical care teams at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex) came up with an idea on how to connect people, separated by lockdown and infection control, with their loved ones struck down with Covid and battling for survival in intensive care units. Inspired by a similar project at a Trust in the North of England, the Shared Hearts project saw handmade hearts donated by the public given to a patient dying with Covid, and a matching heart would be given to a relative unable to be at the bedside. Once the patient had passed away a card, with a heart and a personal message would be sent to the next of kin. This simple act of kindness was greatly supported by people across Sussex, and hundreds and hundreds of knitted hearts were sent from across the county to the hospitals that make up UHSussex.

those people who have been lost to Covid but also all those left behind after loss “ families and friends, healthcare staff who felt helpless as people died.” The subject of the artwork is a human eye and part of a face, which was actually modelled on one of Joe’s clinical colleagues. The technique he used is known as ˜latch hooking’, and saw Joe individually hand-stich 125,000 yarns! Joe added: “I finished it in October this year. It took me four months of working 4hrs every night and then 8hrs on a Saturday and Sunday.

Once lockdown was lifted and loved ones were allowed in to visit patients, the project stopped but hundreds of hearts were left over.

“The eye and the mask were created using the same technique and in all, 46 different colours of wool were used. A lot of wool.

They have now been turned into a stunning work of art, ‘Dream over Feeling’, by artist Joe Laffan, and commissioned and framed by UHSussex arts programme Onward Arts, funded by the Trusts BSUH charity.

“I am really happy with the piece. I saw so many doctors and nurses suffering throughout this pandemic. It was my obsession to finish the piece and I see it as a memorial and tribute to all of the dedicated work of our NHS staff and for all the lives lost and people impacted by this terrible disease.”

It is thought to be the only work of art of its kind in the UK and hangs in reception of the Audrey Emerton Building, the education centre at The Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton. Joe, an arts graduate who works at the Trust as a Faculty Administrator for Medicine, said: “I was asked by onward arts if I would create a piece of art from the hundreds of knitted hearts they had left over from the project. “I had about 400 hearts to use and I wanted to create something that would commemorate all

The team at Onward Arts strives to enhance the experience of patients, visitors and staff, and to create healing hospital environments through the use of the arts. Project Manager Erin Burns said: “The piece has truly brightened up the reception at the building, and will continue to be an emotional reminder to everyone who visits of an incredibly difficult year. I want to thank Joe, the BSUH charity for funding the project and to the wonderful local people who donated the hearts which made this possible.”

Primary school class sends letters of thanks to NHS Healthcare workers across East and West Sussex received Christmas letters of thanks this week from a class of primary school children aged just eight and nine-years-old.

Healthcare workers across East and West Sussex received Christmas letters of thanks this week“ from a class of primary school children aged just eight and nine-years-old. The letters arrived on Tuesday morning at three of the hospitals that help make up University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust: Worthing; the Royal Sussex County, in Brighton; and the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath. They came from the class of Year 4 at St Mary’s Primary School, in Horsham, and were the children’s own idea when they were asked by their teacher, Jamie Ellis, who would they most like ˜to thank and give a good feeling to’ during a lesson about how to structure a letter. Jamie, who is deputy head at the school and has been a teacher there for 8 years, said: “We were doing a lesson on letter writing, showing children the joy of writing a letter and the impact it can have on people receiving it. “We show the children how different it is to text and email messages and ask them to think about what they would like to say, the letter’s purpose, and we asked them who would they like to write to, who would they like to feel good. “One of the children said, ˜Let’s write thank you letters to the doctors and nurses.” The group got together and then said they wanted to thank everyone who works in the hospitals“ whether they be surgeons or cleaners“ for all the work they do and continue to do. The letters are their take on it, it’s what they want to say and they wanted to send them to the three UHSussex Hospitals and also Redhill.” The class has 29 eight and nine-year old boys and girls, but with two children absent through Covid, 27 letters were written, photo-copied and then sent out in first class post to the HR departments of the four hospitals. Dr Maggie Davies is chief nurse at UHSussex and was delighted to receive the thank you’s on behalf of the Trust.

She said: “It was really, really lovely to receive these letters. Everyone is really touched by the messages of thanks that have come from such young children. It’s been a tough time, it continues to be a tough time, and when letters like these come through the door, from primary school children, it really does make every one of us feel proud and a little bit better, helps us all keep going. I really want to say thank you back to the children, thank you very, very much.” The messages of thanks were all handwritten and unique to each child. Like from Layla, who is 8-yearsold: “I can’t believe your doing so well! Really hope you get a long break this Christmas to spend some time with your own friends and family. We’ll beat Covid next year!” Or from Rory, who is 9: “Thank you for all of your hard work helping all patients who need help from you. Keep going because we really need you. We really appreciate all of it.” And this from Florrie, aged 9: “I want to say thank you for risking yourselfs to help others and perservering even though you must be really tired. Thank you for always being there and helping save lives. We really appreciate all of the hard work you do. Remember, keep going because this country really needs you!†Teacher Jamie added: “They are a thoughtful bunch of children as individuals and as a group. Some of the content they came up with is really insightful. I am really proud of them all.”

Funding boost for football facilities in Southwick Plans to bring community football back to one of the oldest grounds in Sussex have taken a big step forward after a £50,000 cash injection by Adur District Council. The Russell Martin Foundation (RMF), a Southwick-based not-for-profit organisation which uses the power of football to help change people’s lives, was granted a 25-year lease for Old Barn Way in Southwick last year. The charity, which is backed by the Sussex-born former Norwich City and Rangers player and current Swansea City manager, is working with the local authority to refurbish the entire site, transforming the ground into a community football hub, which promotes health, wellbeing and education in the area. To help kickstart the project, the Council has this week released £50,000 of Section 106 funding to the charity to carry out urgent safety works to the facility. This will support the return of youth and community football in the short term. Longer term, RMF wants to install a sustainable cork based 3G pitch which will enable the ground to be used regularly all year round regardless of the weather and seek to upgrade facilities at the site to create a modern and fit for purpose community football hub. Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “I’m pleased we are able to support the Russell Martin Foundation with this cash injection which will get the ball rolling in terms of carrying out urgent works to what is a valuable community facility. “The charity’s long term plans are extremely exciting - but in order to get there, the ground needs to become operational. We remain supportive and committed to helping it get there and to seeing football of all levels return to Old Barn Way.”

Southwick football ground in Old Barn Way

The Council ended the agreement with the former leaseholder at Old Barn Way in 2019 due to significant mismanagement issues and safety concerns. RMF had initially hoped to be able to carry out urgent safety works in time for the ground to be back in use by September. But survey works have revealed concerns over asbestos and water damage to the clubhouse while the perimeter wall and fence needs to be repaired and reinstalled. Alan Sanders, Chief Executive of the Russell Martin Foundation, said: “We welcome this support from Adur District Council as we embark on the next stage of bringing Old Barn Way back into use and transforming it into one of the best community football hubs in Sussex. “This funding will enable vital work to be done so that we can deliver some of our youth and community football programme at the site and we look forward to announcing details of the next stage of our exciting plans in the New Year.”

Pets back to nature Natural remedies and holistic help for older pets. Acupuncture - Anyone who has experienced the transformative and almost mystical effects of acupuncture will understand why this ancient Chinese treatment has the potential to help an ailing animal. Practitioners of acupuncture believe that ‘needling’ along certain points of the body improves the flow of Chi, or energy, thus promoting better health. Although the health benefits are difficult to prove scientifically, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that acupuncture therapy can help relieve dogs of joint and muscle pain, encourage healing after trauma or surgery, and even treating the symptoms of diabetes and cancer. Chiropractic treatments Chiropractors move the bones in the spine and other parts of the body to relieve pain. Pets with neck or back problems can benefit from these treatments, just like people do. For pets though, you won’t hear cracking - there’s not as much aggressive force used. It’s a gentle procedure, and simple techniques can make a great difference to the alignment of the spine, while other parts of an animal’s body can be just as receptive to management and bone manipulation.

Massage - Massage can improve blood flow, reduce swelling, and help with anxiety issues. Pets like it – it is warming, reassuring and settles them, both physically and mentally. It’s best to consult an expert in animal massage if you want to ensure this technique can be performed to its maximum effect; yet stroking, caressing and gentle patting will almost always stimulate sensory pleasure for an animal. Chinese herbal medicine - It has been around for centuries, yet only in recent years has

It’s usually related to chronic problems and conditions, which include simple pain relief right the way through to helping to improve and restore organ function, and the strengthening and support of the immune system. It should be said, however, that some herbs are not advisable if a pet is already using certain medications – usually things like diuretics and blood thinners – so proper research beforehand is advisable.

Chinese herbal medicine – and Chinese Veterinary Medicine – really come to the fore as a recognised tool for curing ailments in humans and animals. It relies on using different combinations of herbal ingredients in order to produce a holistic mainframe on which the body can treat disease and heal.

Hydrotherapy - The use of physical therapy in water has become increasingly popular over recent years. For lowimpact exercise, perhaps when recovering from injury, or in an animal that suffers from joint issues or arthritis, or simply doesn’t have the mobility old, hydrotherapy can provide a real exercise stimulus in calm, relaxing surroundings.

An Island Nation It’s 80 years since the first Desert Island Discs was broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and the music and chat castaway combinations remain as popular now as it has ever been. In the fast-paced, cut-throat world of modern entertainment, it often seems that projects, shows and personalities leave as quickly as they arrive. That makes the mainstays all the more valuable and cherished, and few have stood the test of time as long as Desert Island Discs, the Radio 4 show that now celebrates eight decades on the airwaves. It was January 29th, 1942, when the programme was first broadcast, on the BBC Forces station, which was set up during World War II to assist in reporting the war effort. It was to be the first of over 3,000 shows, across BBC Home Surface, BBC Light Programme and finally on to Radio 4, its home since 1967. Creator Roy Plomley was the show’s long-time host, overseeing matters for 43 years before passing away in 1985. Michael Parkinson, Sue Lawley and Kirsty Young followed suit, with Lauren Laverne’s appointment in 2018 offering the show a modern slant. The concept, of course, is simple – what eight records would they take with them if they were to be taken to a desert island, and in the early days, guests brought their own gramophone records with them to the studio! These records then give way to a broader conversation about the subject’s life, experiences and events.

Guests are also given The Complete Works of Shakespeare, a Bible or equivalent religious or philosophical tome, plus a third book of their choosing; and are permitted one luxury item as well. Even though Desert Island Discs is now approaching octogenarian status, it hasn’t been afraid to break from the norm from time to time. Dame Judi Dench’s macular degeneration meant she was allowed to select an audiobook, while Sue Lawley allowed John Cleese to take Michael Palin with him to the island, on the condition that he was dead and stuffed!

the sound of herring gulls played over it to denote a coastal feel; yet the species is non-equatorial. Perhaps the few episodes in 1964 where the sound of tropical birds was used instead was as close as Desert Island Discs ever got to reality. Regardless, we’ll allow the fantasy of escaping with a collection of cherished records immerse us, hopefully for another 80 years or so.

From Arthur Askey to Kenneth Williams, Terry Wogan to Stephen Fry, Adele to Morrissey, Desert Island Discs has displayed as much versatility and diversity in its guests as it has its music. Interestingly, the ever-popular theme music – By the Sleepy Lagoon, by Eric Coates – has
