That’s A Wrap
The festive season is a time of joy, love and celebration. Families come together and gifts are exchanged as tokens of appreciation and affection. However, behind the scenes of our cherished festivities lies an often-overlooked problem: waste.
Eco-friendly wrapping Inspired by the Japanese art of ‘Furoshiki’, cloth wraps are a beautiful and sustainable way to wrap gifts. Not only can they be reused year after year, but they also add a touch of elegance to your presents. Choosing recycled wrapping paper or brown kraft paper as your gift-wrapping choice is both eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing. These materials exude a rustic, natural elegance. More importantly, by selecting these options, we actively contribute to conserving forests, ensuring that fewer trees are sacrificed during festive occasions, thereby preserving the environment for future generations. Moving away from synthetic ribbons and bows, consider sustainable alternatives like twine, cotton ribbon or even sprigs of fir trees. These eco-friendly options not only beautify your gifts but also reflect a conscious decision to support environmental preservation, adding a thoughtful touch. Before hastily discarding old maps, newspapers or magazines, think about repurposing them as distinctive gift-wrapping options. This approach showcases creativity, breaks from tradition and
operations. By choosing their products, you’re not just offering a high-quality gift, but also endorsing companies genuinely invested in environmental conservation and responsible business practices. Sometimes, the best gifts aren’t tangible. Consider gifting experiences like a cooking class, a trip to a local museum or a spa day. They’re memorable, create lasting memories and don’t come with unnecessary packaging.
can even provide a bit of reading material if Grandad starts retelling his war tales again. Rethinking gifting Instead of getting swept up in the tide of consumerism and buying numerous small gifts, invest in fewer, high-quality items. A single thoughtful gift is more memorable and cherished than several generic ones. Personal and heartfelt, handmade gifts not only limit consumer waste but also add a personal touch. Whether it’s a knitted scarf, a batch of homemade cookies or a DIY ornament, the effort you put in will surely be appreciated. Seek out brands dedicated to sustainable and ethical
Avoiding consumerism The bustling demands of the festive season often overshadow the true meaning of Christmas. Amidst this whirlwind, it’s crucial not to succumb to impulsive purchases or the allure of unnecessary items. Establishing a set budget provides clear financial boundaries, guiding you to allocate funds wisely, prioritise essential purchases and avoid excessive or impulsive spending during shopping endeavours. Before finalising any purchase, pause and reflect on the gift’s necessity, utility and potential appreciation by the recipient. Such thoughtful introspection frequently results in selecting more heartfelt gifts that won’t end up in the local charity shop by mid-January.

Years and Years Ahead of the 30th year of his annual hosting duties on BBC Television show Jools’ Annual Hootenanny, Jools Holland talks about his music career past and present. Jools Holland is a name synonymous with British music culture. Known best for his electrifying New Year’s extravaganza, Jools’ Annual Hootenanny, and the longrunning show Later… With Jools Holland, he has for years given audiences a glimpse into the soul of music. His story is one of evolution, starting with the iconic new wave band Squeeze, where his keyboard prowess played an integral role in tracks like Cool for Cats. “Squeeze was where it all began,” Holland says, leaning back with a distant look, as if the memories from those days were playing like a movie before him. He continues: “It was during those early years, amidst the highs and lows, the ecstatic performances and the creative disagreements, that I truly grasped the essence of collaboration. “Every band member brought something unique to the table, and when those individualities converged, they created
something magical. It’s like when you speak a language fluently… You no longer think about the words or the grammar – it just flows.” It was this philosophy that made him a natural choice for the BBC, as they sought to capture the ebb and flow of the music world on screen. Later With Jools Holland was not just a show; it was a revelation. “The BBC and I shared a vision,” he explains. “We wanted to create a space where artists, whether established or emerging, could be themselves. Music was the language, and the show was our stage.” Hootenanny is not merely a show; it’s a tradition. As Big Ben chimes towards midnight on New Year’s Eve, families across the UK tune in, waiting for the magic Jools promises. “The Hootenanny experience is a culmination, a tribute to a year in music and a warm
welcome to the one ahead,” gushes Holland. Its success is no surprise. The show’s blend of eclectic performances, surprise guests, and Jools’ unique charisma is irresistible. Which is why many plan their New Year’s Eve parties around the show. “It’s heart-warming to see young and old dance to the same tune. That’s the beauty of Hootenanny. It reminds us of the power of unity and celebration.” But for Jools, the stage isn’t just restricted to the television screen. His love for live performances is evident in his recent 30-date UK tour. Covering most of the British Isles, including Scotland, Yorkshire, the Midlands, North West, South East, the South Coast and two dates in London, this is Jools’ way of personally connecting with his audience. “Each city has its own rhythm, its own story,” he notes. “This tour is my ode to the diverse tapestry of British music culture.”

NURSERY GLEBE PRI SCHOOLNURSERY Margorie Spiller SCHOOL GLEBE Phyllis Marjorie Spiller was born PRIMARY in Streatham, South London on the 23 of November 1897. Her father in 1901 became anNURSERY engineer and worked in the maritime industry in Southampton and then in the car SCHOOL industry in Manchester. Local Historian
rd
Marjorie was known as ‘Margery’ and was educated at a boarding school in Henley-onThames. She was a private person and little is known about her life before 1930. This was when she became an actress and toured the country in the highly successful play ‘Murder On The Second Floor.’ In 1931 Margery was the lead in another touring play, the comedy farce ‘A Little Bit of Fluff.’ In 1935, in a complete change of direction, Margery gave up her promising acting career to become an aviatrix and obtained her pilot’s licence in October the same year. On the 28th of September 1936, Marjorie was featured in international newspapers with one newspaper dubbing her ‘Woman of the Week’. The article in another paper, ‘The Evening Post’ read; ‘When volunteers were called to pilot aeroplanes to Spain to help the rebels, at a charge of £150 a trip, there was one woman volunteer, Miss Marjorie Spiller, who lives in Sussex, and was formerly an actress. Miss Spiller holds her ticket at the Shoreham Flying Club (Shoreham Airport) and is anxious to get a B ticket. She did not seem to worry about how she would get out of Spain again.’ The article explains how Margery had delivered a plane to assist the rebels in their fight against General Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War. The money she was paid for this assignment was spent on more flying lessons and the extra flying hours she had clocked up when she had flown to Spain qualified her for a B licence test. In 1937 she obtained her B licence and this allowed Margery to work as a commercial pilot carrying passengers. In 1938 she qualified as a flying instructor and joined the teaching staff
of Sheffield Aero Club, before becoming an instructor at Eastbourne. However the death of her mother caused a deep trauma in her life and she gave up flying for a time. At the start of the Second World War, in September 1939, Margery was living in her late mother’s home at Dene Place, Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. She had taken in lodgers to support her financially and worked as an ambulance driver for Air Raid Precautions (ARP). With the formation of the women’s section of Air Transport Auxiliary, Margery returned to flying. In 1941 her ATA personal record stated her first name was ‘Phyllis Margery’ Spiller’ and that her date of birth was the 23rd of November 1905 and not 1897. At 43 years old she had fibbed about her age so as not be rejected, passing herself off as a woman in her thirties. This ruse was not discovered until her pilot’s licence was checked. By then Margery had completed her conversion training to fly military aircraft but she was still considered by her instructors to be ‘highly strung’ - as recorded in her service record. Women were allowed to ferry fighter aircraft between airfields in World War II, but were not allowed to fly in combat missions. Margery joined others, including famous, recordbreaking pilot Amy Johnson in this role. It took extraordinary courage for Margery, as an ATA ferry pilot, to jump into a Hurricane fighter that had never been flown before, as it was fresh off of the factory production line. This Hurricane had no ammunition for its guns and had to be flown under threat of enemy attack to be delivered to a frontline RAF base. Once there Margery would hop out of the cockpit and a fighter pilot would jump in. The Hurricane would be armed and refuelled ready to be flown into combat only minutes later, to defend the country from enemy attack. Margery put duty first before her failing health in an age where women’s health issues were not generally discussed. When Margery finally reported she was ill and unable to continue flying, she was diagnosed with cancer and died a month later in May 1942 aged 44.

God Save Benedict Arnold: The True Story of America’s Most Hated Man by Jack Kelly Benedict Arnold committed treason-- for more than two centuries, that’s all that most Americans have known about him. Yet Arnold was much more than a turncoat - his achievements during the early years of the Revolutionary War defined him as the most successful soldier of the era. God Save Benedict Arnold tells the gripping story of Arnold’s rush of audacious feats - his capture of Fort Ticonderoga, his Maine mountain expedition to attack Quebec, the famous artillery brawl at Valcour Island, the turning-point battle at Saratoga - that laid the groundwork for American independence. Published by Cornerstone on December 7th Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross The epic conclusion to the intensely romantic and beautifully written story that started in Divine Rivals. Two weeks have passed since Iris Winnow returned home bruised and heartbroken from the front, but the war is far from over. Roman is missing and the city of Oath continues to dwell in a state of disbelief and ignorance. When Iris and Attie are given another chance to report on Dacre’s movements, they both take the opportunity and head westward once more despite the danger, knowing it’s only a matter of time before the conflict reaches a city that’s unprepared and fracturing beneath the chancellor’s reign. And as the days grow darker, inevitably drawing Roman and Iris closer together…the two of them will risk their very hearts and futures to change the tides of the war. Rewilding an Urban Garden by Local Author Gerry Maguire Thompson “Utterly charming, and infectious in its enthusiasm. An inspiration to those seeking to connect more closely with the wildlife on their doorstep” - Award-winning nature writer Neil Ansell
This book will be enjoyed by the ever increasing number of people who care about wildlife and want to increase their sense of deeply connecting with nature. It is enhanced throughout by exquisite woodcut style illustrations depicting all the inhabitants and visitors to the wild garden. This will be an ideal present for family, friends, loved ones, gardening fanatics, nature lovers, wildlife spotters – or to treat yourself. It draws the reader into a rich world that is by turns fascinating, enthralling, entertaining, dramatic and astonishing, and is told with a touch of quirky humour. Readers will share the author’s inspiration, upliftment and joy through hearing of intimate and bewitching wildlife encounters throughout nature’s changing seasons, like: • • • •
listening to the morning chatter of cheerfully noisy sparrow society spotting the wood-mouse that lives in the bottom of the compost heap, as it makes sorties to gather food for winter witnessing a sparrow-hawk exploding into an unsuspecting cluster of small birds or savouring rare excitement when it’s discovered that a hedgehog is visiting the garden at bed-time each night
It’s amazing how much life comes even to a small urban space - bringing benefits to ourselves, to local wildlife, to the wider urban environment and even to the planet. The author has been rewilding for over twenty years; both he and the garden have featured on TV. Rewilding an urband Garden can be bought via gerry@urbanwildgarden.com, from the Shoreham bookshop Chapter 34, or from Amazon

HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE WILL PROVIDE YOUR FAMILY WITH SECURITY? Life insurance could ensure your family’s security if • Multiply your annual salary: If your family depend on your income, life insurance could provide a you pass away. It may be an important part of your replacement source of money if you pass away. financial plan and could provide peace of mind. If you take out a life insurance policy and pass away during the term, it would pay out a lump sum to your beneficiary. The beneficiary may use the money how they wish. They might use it to cover day-to-day expenses or improve their long-term finances, such as paying off a mortgage. It could provide your loved ones with more security when they’re grieving. Life insurance can cover a defined period or the whole of your life. You’ll need to pay premiums to maintain the cover. Just as important as assessing if life insurance could make sense as part of your financial plan is calculating what level of cover would be suitable. If you’re not sure what level of life insurance your family would need, these three methods to calculate cover could be a useful starting point. • Link it to your large financial commitments: Families often think about financial protection, including life insurance, when they take on a large financial commitment, such as a mortgage. As a result, you may choose to take out life insurance that would allow your family to pay off debt. It could take a weight off their mind and mean their regular income goes much further. Simply multiplying your salary by the number of years your family may need support could be useful. You may tie this to milestones, such as the age your children will reach adulthood. • Work out your family’s essential outgoings: Taking some time to better understand your family’s outgoings, and which ones they’ll need to maintain following a financial shock, could help understand the minimum payout they would need to avoid financial challenges. A tailored financial plan could help you understand your life insurance needs While the above three methods can provide a useful guideline for calculating how much cover you’d like your life insurance to provide, making it part of your wider financial plan can help ensure it would cover your family’s needs. By incorporating life insurance into your financial plan, you can choose cover that’s not only appropriate for you but complements other financial decisions.

Festive Foliage Whether you are an avid gardener or just someone who loves to embrace the spirit of Christmas, adding a few festive plants to your home can really elevate the festive mood. Here are some alternatives to the familiar poinsettia this festive season. Christmas cactus As December draws near, the Christmas cactus unveils its captivating beauty, bursting into an array of splendid blooms. The cascading flowers, with their diverse palette of pinks, reds and pristine whites, stand in stark contrast to its dark green segmented stems.
Rosemary Often, when we think of festive decor, herbs might not immediately come to mind. Yet, rosemary, with its fragrant needles and potential for artful shaping, begs to differ. Many have adopted the practice of trimming rosemary into a conical silhouette, mirroring the iconic Christmas tree.
Norfolk Island Pine For those contending with limited space or perhaps living in smaller urban abodes, the prospect of housing a grand Christmas tree can seem daunting. Enter the Norfolk Island Pine, a perfect solution for such settings.
Mistletoe and holly Mistletoe and holly, with their verdant leaves and vibrant berries, have etched their presence into the tradition of Christmas. Their historical and cultural significance transcends generations, evoking nostalgia and festive cheer. When
you see mistletoe and holly, you know it can’t be any other time of year.

YMCA DownsLink Group: Transforming Young Lives This time last year Mapalo was living in YMCA DownsLink Group supported accommodation after being made homeless at 18. This year she’s completing her first year at university, studying to be a midwife.
Thanks to the care and support she received from the dedicated staff at YMCA DownsLink Group, alongside her own hard work and determination, Mapalo is following her dream of becoming a midwife. This year, due to the cost-of-living crisis, and the shocking rise in the number of people presenting as homeless, the charity need your help more than ever. It recently launched its Christmas Fundraising Appeal so that it can continue to give more young people, like Mapalo, the opportunity to build a brighter future. YMCA DownsLink Group is the largest charity supporting vulnerable children and young people across Sussex and Surry. Every night they provide a safe home to over 650 children and young people at risk of homelessness, some as young as 16. But, more than just a home, by stepping in at this crucial age, they give them a second chance and a future to look forward to. The charity provides wraparound support so that the residents can overcome whatever trauma and challenges they’ve faced in their young lives. Every young person has a dedicated project worker, who gets to know them individually, so they can get them the emotional or mental health support they might need, alongside helping them develop basic life skills (many of us with supportive families might take for granted), such as cooking, cleaning or budgeting. Most importantly, they encourage them back into education, training or employment so that they can start to imagine Someone like Ben. Earlier this year, Ben got in touch with the charity to share how his experience at YMCA DownsLink Group changed his life. “I had such a difficult childhood, years of being abused as a kid. When I went to school, I was a bit all over the place, getting excluded and being in trouble a lot. My mum couldn’t cope, so she kicked me out at 15. I found myself stuck in adult accommodation. It was horrible, with walls

crumbing around me and people screaming every day. It was such a scary place to be. I was in such a dark place. I couldn’t see happiness and thought there was no hope. But I consider myself lucky. I had two teachers who rang the hostel every day saying, “he can’t stay here, it’s horrible”. I’m so fortunate that they kept going and I got moved into 24 hour accommodation with YMCA DownsLink Group. YMCA DownsLink Group gave me a nice home to live in and a safe space. They looked after me, helped me get a job when I was 16 as a kitchen porter. I then moved on to cheffing, working in hotels here and in France, which was incredible! Fifteen years on, I’m a qualified chef, with my own home, living happily in Sussex. I am forever grateful to the YMCA DownsLink Group and to everyone who make it possible for young people like me to move on in life.” If you would like to make a difference to the lives of children and young people in your community, like Mapalo or Ben, visit YMCA DownsLink Group’s Christmas Appeal.

Local Birding Group Celebrates 70th Year with Wader Watch events in Shoreham-by-Sea and Goring To celebrate their 70th anniversary, Shoreham District Ornithological Society (SDOS) will be taking part in ‘Wader Conservation World Watch’ on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of November.
The global event is organised by conservation group, Wader Quest, who work to raise awareness about the challenges wading birds face in the modern world and to raise funds to support wader conservation worldwide, and in support of that, SDOS will be holding three events in Shoreham-by-Sea and Goring.
A drop-in event will take place at Coronation Green in Shoreham-by-Sea (adjacent to the Ferry Bridge) between 10.30am and 1pm on the Saturday, where SDOS members will be observing the birdlife on the Adur Estuary, a Natural England-managed Site of Special Scientific Importance (SSSI), and answering questions from the public. Scopes and binoculars will be provided.
Simultaneously, SDOS will host an expert-led walk of approximately two miles along the Adur SSSI, starting from the Adur Recreation Ground car park in Shoreham-by-Sea at 11.00 am. A third event will be taking place at Goring Gap on Sunday November 5th, meeting at 10:30am the southern end of Sea Lane, Ferring. SDOS members will lead two groups, one along the sea front and the other on adjacent land to see what birds they can spot and to engage with the public. These events will be suitable for complete beginners and experts alike, and couldn’t come at a more important time, with nature both globally and locally under so much threat. The results and observations recorded over the weekend will be sent to Wader
Quest and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). SDOS was founded in 1953 by a group of local enthusiasts. Initially called the 'Shoreham Ornithological Society', it filled a gap they had identified in local clubs catering for people who were interested in the study of wild birds. In 1962, the Sussex Ornithological Society (SOS) evolved from the Shoreham society to cover both East and West Sussex and it later became necessary to rename the Shoreham society – as the Shoreham District Ornithological Society, abbreviated as SDOS. Today, SDOS is a thriving, vibrant organisation with a membership of around 250 members. As well as arranging field outings and indoor meetings, they also publish a newsletter and have an on-line Discussion Group, not to mention a strong social media presence. SDOS is also very active in local conservation work.
SDOS Chair, Tony Benton, said: “I'm immensely proud to be the current chair of SDOS, at a time when it is flourishing and attracting a record number of members. More than ever, people of all ages and backgrounds are wanting to connect with nature, and with like-minded people and we welcome beginners and experts alike to our events. Shoreham, Worthing and Brighton have so many places for people to enjoy urban birding: we love helping people to enjoy wildlife on their doorstep”.

Local Church News
Christmas at St Mary de Haura Advent and Christmas are a magical time at St Mary de Haura. The ancient building comes into its own as the church hosts events, carol services and concerts open to the whole community.
As Christmas becomes ever more commercialised and fast-paced, attending a Carol Service can be a way of slowing down and reconnecting with the true meaning of Christmas. And especially at such a troubled time in the Holy Land, it can provide an opportunity to pause and pray for those less fortunate than ourselves.
All Carol Services at St Mary’s are open to all and you can see details of times in the attached poster and on our website. Please note that our two biggest Carol Services – Carol’s at St Mary’s and the Town Carol Services – are ticketed, with booking details available via our weekly newsletter: http://www. stmarydehaura.org.uk/about-us/ weekly-newsletter/ Regardless of whether we see you over the festive period, we wish you and your loved ones every joy and blessing this Christmas.
ARE YOU A FRIEND OF ST MARY’S?
It only costs £10 a year to support the maintenance and restoration of this beautiful building in the heart of Shoreham Find out more on the Friends page: www.stmarydehaura.org.uk To advertise call 01273 452065 www.insideshoreham.com or email: insidemags@gmail.com

Local Author
Local Author: Lisa Fransson Lisa took seed in a forest in south-western Småland, Sweden, a corner of the world, where she was happy to share flatpack furniture and glassblower huts with Astrid Lindgren.
She composed her first stories at age four, which she wrote in a black notebook, starting at the bottom of the page and writing up. Lisa also spent many hours reclining on a bean bag in the local library, where she first encountered The Lord of the Rings, Gulliver’s Travels, Robinson Crusoe, A Princess of Mars, The Dark is Rising, everything written by Maria Gripe, and hundreds of other treasures. During childhood summers, when she wasn’t swimming in the quiet lakes, Lisa would wander the forest – sometimes with her dog, Pia, but most often alone. This is where she grew to love nature: the moss-covered rocks (she knew they were really hunkering trolls turned to stone by the sun), the floating mists over the meadows (fickle females in white dresses, dancing to enchant you off the path), the gnarled and hollow trees (crooked witches, ready to grasp your shoulder as soon as you turn your back). At ten, Lisa wrote a poem about her cat, Misen, which was published by the local paper, and at 15, she won third prize in a short story competition. Her reading list grew, as did her diary, in which she did her best to enlarge the details of her life. But all that reading had shown her that the world was so much larger than her dark fairytale forest, and she longed for fewer trees and more people. At 19, she set sail for England and washed up on the south coast. She studied Russian
and Linguistics at Sussex University, then proceeded to an MA in Translation Studies at Surrey University. Between translating and raising three children with her bagpipe-playing husband, she snatched moments to write before turbocharging her writing in the Creative Writing Programme at New Writing South. Since then, she has published stories and poems in anthologies and literary magazines, such as The Dawntreader, The Dark Mountain Project, and The Forgotten and Fantastical 4. Once in a while, she still flees back to the forest of her childhood, where she strokes the moss on the sleeping trolls and lets the mists tempt her from the path. Robert Bunny, a toy bunny rabbit, observes the steady decline of a family he so desperately wants to be a part of.His is the only voice of reason as he connects the crumbling mind of Deborah to her son Alex, whilst she tries to save him from the very worst of himself. The Shape of Guilt charts a pattern of secrecy and trauma, one which culminates in a brutal and drastic action. Will Robert Bunny be able to save the ones he loves? You can purchase your copy at: https://www.goodreads.com/author/ show/18076769.Lisa_Fransson

Contre - Jour Lighting Contre - Jour is French for ‘against daylight’ but in the context of photography it is understood to be photographing toward any light source. This technique produces shadows in the foreground, enhances lines and shapes and can create silhouettes. This can work particularly well in black and white as the shadows and silhouettes can be easily enhanced with photoshop or smartphone filters to give good solid blacks which add contrast and drama to images. Although not illustrated here, this technique can distort or burn out parts of the image if the source of light itself is included in the picture, this can be attractive but if that area is too large and bright it can distract from the rest of the picture
Two of my images here were taken in Paris from an elevated walkway (Promenade des Plantes) which means that my camera is pointing down, avoiding bright skies but capturing the effect that those bright skies have on the scene. The third picture was taken in Brighton. The camera is only slightly tipped forward but emphasises how the shadows are reaching towards the viewer, drawing the eye into the scene. You can see more of my images here: www. instagram.com/shoreham_steveContre Jour Lighting
so you may need to balance that a little. I see many images of a low sun bleaching out a large area of the photograph but if you position yourself so the camera just catches the light creeping out from behind a tall building or a tree trunk, this just restricts the size and brightness of the light source in order to ’tame’ it a little so it doesn’t dominate the image as it is best not to ‘over use’ the effect but to use it to enhance the overall scene. Finding Hope for Fertility Shona Campbell, Acupuncturist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains how she can help if you are struggling with your fertility. It can be overwhelming to realise that you are not conceiving and to wonder why. Maybe you are thinking about investigating why, but don’t know where to begin. Maybe you have had a diagnosis which is complex (such as PCOS, Endometriosis) or unexplained infertility, and you are trying to figure out what your options are. Maybe you are dealing with the disappointment of multiple rounds of IVF failures, or multiple miscarriages. This is where a Fertility acupuncturist Specialist can step in and support you, and to help you figure things out. I am a fully licensed Acupuncturist and currently completing the Postgraduate Advanced Fertility Diploma with Fertility Support training. With this education and deep dive into fertility, I can: • Provide information on arranging your own private testing so that we have a comprehensive picture of what is going on for you. • Arm you with knowledge to take to your GP or consultant to ask the right questions. Analyse any test results that you already have to see if there are any gaps in information. Give you lifestyle advice which is relevant to your symptoms. • Signpost you to information on supplements and nutrition to help get you into the best health for conception. • Teach you how to record Basal Body Temperatures across the cycle to interpret how this impacts on your fertility. • Look closely at male partner’s health and assess what could be improved where there are sperm quality issues. • Regulate dysfunctional menstrual cycles.
•
Give a tailored acupuncture treatment.
IVF is a wonderful tool to move towards a healthy pregnancy. However, there is so much that can be done to get you into the best health before you begin, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy. And sometimes, when we implement all the above changes, we can avoid IVF altogether. Indeed, the emotional support I can offer, together with stress-relieving treatment alone can have a huge positive effect on your overall health and, consequently, your fertility. To make appointment with Shona, just call or email Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, on 01273 567654 info@shorehamosteo.co.uk

Adur East Lions The Adur East Lions have been busy gearing up for a whole host of Christmas activities. They are always on the look-out for people to help too, so if you can spare even an hour, please do get in touch.
This year, we will be holding two static collections, firstly at Southwick Xmas Market on Saturday 2nd December and then again at Shoreham Farmer’s Market on Saturday 9th December. At both events we will have our Sleigh and Santa, who will be giving out FREE TOYS to all the children passing by. If you have little ones, be sure and stop by to say ‘Hi’ to Santa, he’d love to see you! For the third year in a row we will also be running our Grotto at Manor Cottage in Southwick (located opposite Barclays Bank, near the Community Centre) off Southwick Square. Our elves will soon be busy decorating the Grotto, so be sure to check it out if you can. Our Grotto will be open on the following days from 11am to 3pm (as advertised in Inside Shoreham last month); • • • • •
Saturday 2nd December Saturday 9th December Sunday 10th December Saturday 16th December Sunday 17th December
Our Grotto costs £5.00 and each child will get a visit with Santa, plus they will receive an age-appropriate toy. Finally, we will be taking Santa and his Sleigh around the streets of Fishersgate & Southwick. Be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook page at www. facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.com to see if, or when, he’s coming to a street near you. Please note however, that the timings for the Sleigh can change (or even end up being cancelled) due to adverse weather conditions - even Santa struggles to get out when it’s too wet and/or windy! We hope you’ll enjoy the activities we are running. If you’d like to help us with these (or indeed any of our other activities), please get in touch with us via
Facebook or by calling us on 0345 833 7356. We’d love to hear from you and hope that you all have a Very Merry Christmas. Adur East Lions Club x

A Very Homemade Christmas What better way to celebrate Christmas than by getting together with your friends and family to make handmade decorations? Not only is this an activity that will create lasting memories, but it will also give your home a unique look that cannot be bought in the shops. DIY wreaths An iconic symbol of Christmas which sets a festive tone even before guests step inside. Begin with Fir tree branches, then add pinecones and ribbons for a touch of elegance. Integrate small ornaments or baubles that resonate with your personal style or theme. Use a wire frame as your foundation to provide both structure and ensure durability, then decide on its pride of place. Homemade advent calendar Use small bags, quaint boxes or vintage envelopes as your daily vessels. Inside, tuck away delightful treats, heart-warming notes or tiny
sentimental trinkets. Each day becomes a revelation, combining tradition with personalised surprises. Handmade stockings Craft personalised stockings for each family member. Whether handsewn using soft felt, hand-knitted using cosy yarn or simply reusing an old sock, the real magic comes when you add your own adornment. Embroidered names, shimmering sequins or other delightful embellishments
create not just a decoration, but a keepsake filled that can be used again, year after year. Christmas cards display Celebrate the affection and wishes you’ve garnered by crafting a dynamic display. Use coloured ribbons or twinkling fairy lights as your base, then clip on each card.

New community leisure vision for Adur Rec Adur Recreation Ground could be transformed for the community with a new bike park designed for people of all ages. The vision has been
proposed by Shoreham Bike Park CIC, a not-forprofit community interest company after we asked local groups to come up with ideas The new park would fill a spot at the north end of the rec, creating an exciting new community leisure hub on what is currently an underused piece of land. The hope is to create a unique, multi-use bike park to cater for all ages and abilities that challenges different cycling disciplines. The park would also create a free, active leisure opportunity for locals whilst encouraging cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. The proposed design includes up to five different areas, including a beginner and main pump track for practising momentum, balance and speed, as well as dirt jumps for tricks and a skills trail for mountain bikes. The project will also involve upgrading footpaths in the area, which the Environment Agency say would strengthen the riverbank flood defences. The council has chosen Shoreham Bike Park CIC as the intended operator, so a conditional lease will be granted. This gives Shoreham Bike Park CIC the opportunity to begin securing the money needed for this ambitious project. The conditional lease means that the project will go ahead subject to funding and any required consents. Should Shoreham Bike Park CIC fail to raise the necessary funds to deliver the project, the land will be returned to the council. Cllr Emma Evans, Adur's cabinet member for the environment and leisure, said: “We encouraged local organisations to come forward with their suggestions for this site in order to repurpose the land in a way that would
Image: Proposed design for Adur Recreation Ground bike park directly benefit the local community. “The proposed bike park would be an excellent way to transform this underused slice of land into something that benefits local people, and which would encourage our community to stay active and enjoy being outdoors.” Seb Tucknott, the founder of Shoreham Bike Park CIC, said: “We are delighted that Adur District Council has selected our proposal for Shoreham Bike Park for Adur Recreation Ground. We have worked really hard to get to this stage, and are incredibly grateful for all the support we've had so far from the local community. “We look forward to working with Adur District Council and the wider community to bring our vision to reality.”

I’m dreaming of a light Christmas
How to get through the festive period without piling on the pounds. Here are five ways you can have a first-class festive season where health and fitness are at the forefront of your thinking… not tucked down the side of the sofa with the Cadbury’s Roses wrappers!
The solution is to have a smaller quantity of a strong cheese (Roquefort or Stilton, for instance) – the strength has actually been proven to act as a tastebud deterrent after the first few mouthfuls.
1. Drink plenty of water Make sure that you keep hydrated throughout the festive period… with water!
And if you just can’t resist chocolate, ensure it’s dark chocolate, which is proven to lessen the chance of heart disease due to the presence of antioxidants.
Okay, so it’s no crime to treat yourself to the odd tipple or three, but taking on other regular fluids, and water in particular, will balance your body out, helping your liver at a time when it takes most punishment, whilst aiding digestion too. And on that note, it’s worth remembering that drinking water can stop your hunger from getting the better of you. Research shows drinking a glass of water prior to eating will reduce appetite by a third. 2. Lessen your cheese overload It’s a fair assumption – rather than investing in large portions of chocolate cake or the decorative delights of selection box sweets, switch instead to a dairy option, and the light delights of the cheese and cracker combination. Unfortunately, while cheese obviously has less sugar, it also contains more calories.
3. Go nuts and not crackers Look at avoiding crisps and baked snacks as much as you possibly can and, instead, try satsumas and nuts. Both contain high quantities of vitamin C and healthy oils, and are much lower in fat.
based elements and meat can, for some of us, feel even more resistible than usual, particularly on a cold, dark day; yet the better your vegetable ratios, the healthier the meal. 5. Fish risk Smoked salmon is always a festive favourite, in various forms, but try to avoid butter; and instead of hollandaise sauce, make it with freshly squeezed lemon and black pepper. Similarly, for prawn cocktail, use Greek yoghurt instead of the typical high-fat mayonnaise option.
Replace crackers with oatcakes - their slow-release sugars mean you feel fuller for much longer. Oatcakes also have soluble fibre that’s friendly on the heart, assisting in cholesterol-shifting from the bloodstream. 4. Veg out Of course most of us prefer the protein and carbohydrate elements when it comes to big meals over the Christmas period – potato-
