Introducing the ‘Misty Blue’ quartet – a new collection from local author Misty Gardner Introducing the ‘Misty Blue’ quartet – a new collection from local author Misty Gardner. The stories follow the inter-leaved lives of the four main characters, Micky, Alex, Davey and Nat. The stories overlap, giving parts of their lives from their own viewpoints. The first book in the series, Misty Blue, is told by the central character, Micky.
Micky Culshaw is the singer in Misty Blue, a band which had enormous success in the late 1970s but who are no longer at the top of the tree. The story opens in 1983 with the murder of the band’s guitarist. Micky has also been attacked but is suspected of the murder. With flashbacks to Micky’s childhood in the late 1950s/early 1960s the story continues down to the stunning revelation of the identity of the true killer.
The second book, Rhapsody in Blue, is narrated by Alex, who plays a major part in Micky’s life. Growing up in the grey days after WW2, outside the warmth of normal family life and in a country which is not his own, he carves out a successful career as a barrister before becoming an MP, but Alex has a secret – one which, in those days, could end his career – possibly even bring the Government down… This part of the story travels from wartime London before moving on, taking the characters up to the dawn of the new millennium. It recreates the atmosphere that prevailed in the period immediately following the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, through the AIDS crisis and changing Inside Shoreham & Southwick April 2021
attitudes in society. Both stories deal with sensitive topics and explore the characters’ emotions and reactions progressively against the background of its setting. The stories are told in the context of true love and friendship and are suitable for young adults as well as ‘baby boomers’ who were around at the time. The third book in the series is scheduled to appear in November 2021 and will tell Davey’s story Exclusive to Amazon – Available in paperback or on Kindle
WHY PLANNING FOR THE 2021/22 TAX YEAR NOW IS A FANTASTIC IDEA. The 2020/21 tax year hasn’t even finished yet and while this time of the year is often associated with using up allowances before the deadline, it’s actually the perfect time to start thinking about the next 12 months. The 2021/22 tax year starts on 6 April 2021. In some cases, leaving decisions until the last minute can make sense, but there are reasons to set out a plan at the start of a new tax year. Here are six: 1. Avoid last-minute decisions: Leaving your financial decisions until the last minute can mean you need to rush, which could lead to mistakes being made or not fully exploring all your options as you simply don’t have the time. 2. No worries about delays: Sometimes things outside of your control can have an impact on plans. Delays with providers and other parties are one example. If you decide to invest through an ISA with just a few days to go until the new tax year, there is a risk that you’ll end up missing the deadline. It could mean paying more tax than you need to. 3. Spread your contributions across the year: If you plan to put a significant sum of money away, whether in an ISA, pension, or an investment portfolio, spreading out contributions across the full year can make it more manageable. The ISA annual allowance, for example, is £20,000. If you want to make full use of this, adding around £1,650 per month from your income or other assets can mean it becomes part of your regular outgoings rather than a lump sum. The same is true for pension contributions. your income, but is unlikely to do so if you make a one-off contribution. 4. Benefit from interest and the compounding effect: If you’re using a cash account, such as a Cash ISA, you’ll receive interest on your contributions. Depositing money sooner in the tax year, whether as regular contributions or a lump sum, means you have more time to benefit from interest. The compounding effect means the longer your money is held in an account, the greater the interest it will deliver over time. Although interest rates are low, over time the process can deliver sizeable benefits, especially if you’re making full use of allowances. 5. Drip feeding investments could make sense for your financial plan: Much like a cash account, spreading investments across the tax year or adding a lump sum at the beginning can mean you have longer to benefit from potential returns and the compounding effect. Investing regularly also means you’ll buy stocks and shares at different points in the market cycle. Timing the market is impossible to do consistently, so drip-feeding can help balance volatility. 6. Take the opportunity to set goals: Finally, a new tax year provides a good opportunity to review what you want to achieve in the next 12 months and beyond. It can help ensure your financial plan reflects your wider goals and will help you reach them.

Local and Live Revived A Celebration of Local Creativity – and coming out of Lockdown! Monday 24 May to Wednesday 16 June Local and Live is a celebration of local creativity funded by the Arts Council and produced in partnership between Shoreham Wordfest and Ropetackle Arts Centre.
This is the continuation of the festival which started in October 2020 but has paused twice due to Covid lockdowns. Wordfest are delighted to announce the rest of the programme following the government announcement that we can return to live performances from May 17th. The festival starts with a talk by Dr Geoffrey Mead on Monday 24th May. Titled Viscounts and Chicken Stubbers it will explain how landownership and cultivation has shaped our Sussex landscape over the centuries. Award winning author, Colin Grant will feature some of the contributions from local people which contributed to his book, The Homecoming, Stories of the Windrush Generation.
Joining him on 7 June will be performance poet, Akila Richards.Local trio Hatful of Rain will perform their eclectic mix of folk and Americana on Saturday May 29, featuring lovely vocals from Chloe Overton. Up and coming comedian, Joshua Crisp has a humorous take on the Tales of Hercules on 27 May, and Louise Peskett will give an insight to “The Notorious Women of Brighton” on 26 May. The festival will also feature two talks in partnership with Sussex Wildlife Trust: Inside Shoreham & Southwick April 2021
Rewilding the Seas and What Have Plants Ever Done for us? The festival line-up is completed with a talk about poet W H Auden, an evening of Sea Shanties with Chris Hare and the Duck Pond Sailors, and finally an evening of cool jazz with Bjorn Dahlberg and Paul Richards.
Tickets cost £8 except the SWT talks on 25 May and 3 June which cost £10. The Local and Live festival pass of 10 events for £60 will continue. Some events will be live streamed. Community Works is a Charity Connecting community organisations, people and businesses to build a better community for everyone. Every year, our Volunteer Centre helps hundreds of local people find a rewarding volunteer role. Hello and welcome back to Inside Volunteering. This month we’re talking about the benefits of volunteering for those who are out of work. Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on jobs and unemployment is at its highest level for some years. Young people have been particularly hard hit as they struggle to find opportunities to gain experience. Volunteering offers many benefits to people out of work – skills, experience, contacts and perhaps most important of all, a big boost to your self-esteem. If you’re willing to make a commitment to a local charity or community group, they will help you make the most of your volunteering experience. I’m Carole Claridge, the Volunteering Adviser for Worthing & Adur and a volunteer myself. If you’d like to know more about volunteering, get in touch. I’d love to help you get started. Read on for some thoughts on how you can benefit from volunteering and check out the current volunteer vacancies on our website. We’ve shared a few suggestions at the end of this article. Develop your knowledge, skills and attitude Volunteering is a great way to learn a range of skills. For example, being part of a team develops active listening and communication, being organised, taking responsibility, showing initiative, problemsolving and showing support and respect for others. If you have a track record in your career, volunteering can offer more specific experience such as project management skills, leading a team or marketing. There are many volunteering opportunities including mentoring, tutoring, fundraising, planning and promoting events, IT and back-office support. Clare, who completed her politics and international relations degree in 2020 and volunteers at Citizens Advice West Sussex, is gaining valuable skills. She said, “There are so many different roles that I didn’t realise existed. My knowledge of analysing data has grown enormously and connects with my current studies in Business Economics MSc.” Boost your CV Volunteering can add an extra dimension to your CV and help get you noticed. Employers will be impressed by your initiative and dedication to the community. Many companies are committed to social responsibility and volunteering shows you have similar values. Volunteer experience is professional experience, so use your role on your CV. Include your responsibilities, accomplishments, results and awards, as you would for any other job. Will it lead to a job? If your goal is to work in the voluntary or charity sector, then volunteering is the most recognisable way to gain relevant experience. While there are no guarantees of landing paid employment, being in your area of interest will increase the possibility of it happening. If a job comes up, you’ll cont/d page 14
14 know about it. Supercharge your self-worth Volunteering can bring a sense of purpose to your search for paid work. While you’re helping others, you could meet people who share similar interests. The Battle of Shoreham 1545 Admiral John Dudley, Lord Lisle, wrote to King Henry VIII on the 15th of August 1545: ‘The enemies and we are in sight of one another, and their galleys and our wing rowing fast to get the advantage of the wind; but they do not seem disposed to fight, although the weather favours them, and we may dally with them a day or two before we need fight except we see a better advantage. They seem to be many more ships than we; but victory rests with God, and we will do our duty if it please Him to send a commodious wind, albeit they seem to have issued out of the Narrow Seas to seek us. Describes how a hulk which stole from the fleet as they departed from Wight surrendered to two of the French galleys lurking there (which Dutchman need not have been taken and was immediately rescued, but the master was carried away) gave the enemy knowledge of their coming forth. Fears that other ships and galleys have been left to keep the passage of the Narrow Seas. Are at present “thwartt of Shorham, too kennys allmoste frome the shore,” and the wind, since they came forth, has been E.S.E., so that they could not “fetche by este of Bechiefe”; and it has been almost calm. Prays for a fresher gale of wind. In the Harry Grace a Dieu, 15 Aug., 10 a.m.’ During the summer of 1545, Tudor England was engaged in a sea war with France in the English Channel. The French Admiral Claude D’Annebault with a fleet of one hundred and thirty ships and several thousand soldiers pillaged and burned the English ports along the south coast. One
attack in July fell upon Seaford and was countered by a force of Sussex volunteers. They had banded together upon seeing the smoke from the burning town. In the course of the campaign the French also landed on the Isle Of Wright and burned the villages there. The English flagship the Mary Rose was sunk in the same campaign. Admiral Dudley had amassed an English fleet of one hundred and sixty ships and a crew of twelve thousand. On the 12th of August 1545 at 3am, he set out again to find and do battle with the raiding French fleet. In a dispatch to King Henry VIII, Admiral Lisle reported that the wind was West North West ‘blowing very little, but I trust it will amend.’ Two days into sailing, the beer on board the ships had turned to acid, plus the meat had spoiled. The English fleet had to remain close inshore to receive daily supplies by boat from the threatened ports. The weather then changed and the fleet was sailing against an East to South East cont/d page 38

Sleep Challenge The nation recently commemorated one year since the first lockdown one year of living with the pandemic and making space for the ‘new normal’. As a result, many of us have struggled with a loss of routine and a subsequent disruption to our sleep cycles. Our body clocks have had a bit of a shock, and our days are filled with much less diversity and stimulation. In addition, our relationship with time has been altered, as boundaries between work and home, night and day, collapse, and the term ‘groundhog day’ is being mentioned a fair few times.
Inevitably, this lack of structure has detrimental effects on our sleeping patterns. You might find yourself sleeping at unusual times, your body clock is upside down and back to front, you can barely sleep at all, or you’re waking in the night and unable to get back to sleep. Perhaps you’re sleeping much more than usual and struggle to get out of bed when you wake up. Maybe anxiety or overthinking is a big sleep obstacle for you. Maybe it’s a lack of exercise and activity during the day. Whatever the exact issue, the end result is the same. A lack of quality sleep (on top of a global pandemic) means low energy, irritability, poor concentration, lack of motivation, and poor emotional regulation. It can impact our productivity and creativity at work, as well as relationships with those close to us.

I know it might seem like just an extra thing to have to worry about, but implementing healthier sleep habits, setting intentions and maintaining boundaries (such as only staying in bed between certain hours) will help in the long run, creating a sense of structure and self-care. Being intentional with things like practising good sleep hygiene, limiting screen time, limiting alcohol and caffeine, meditating, visualising, breath-work, talking about your concerns, and being as active as possible during the day will have positive effects on your sleep and your well-being more generally. Rest is a fundamental right, so empower yourself to claim it and start feeling yourself again. Ingrown Toenails Whilst there are some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting.
An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better. People will often try cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth. Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails. However if you already have an ingrown toenail, see your podiatrist who may be able to treat you with or without surgery (a minor procedure under local anaesthetic). As a festival organiser and party planner (since 1999) I know that the hardest part of anything is getting started. My top tip is to get a picture in your head of WHO first. Photography as a Metaphor Have you ever thought how photography and art in general, can be used as a metaphor as a means of personal expression? The most obvious examples are uplifting images to express inner happiness or downbeat pictures to express sadness, anxiety or fear.
During lockdown, social media has been awash with documentary photographs depicting closed shops, overgrown hairdo’s and other such literal images but lockdown could also be represented by a face in a window, a withered flower or a painted rainbow. This would be a less literal way of depicting a situation we are all experiencing. This could be interpreted as visual metaphor.I have personal photographs here which can be read by the viewer as “straight” pictures but, for me, they have deeper meaning. They are personal expressions of life. Illustrations of how life looks to me. A photograph from the mid 90’s of my then young daughter has been manipulated in the darkroom entitled “Face on the Wall”. The idea for the original composition was of her face offset in the frame with negative space for her to grow into as she reached adulthood was then taken a step further by including the framed image as if it hung on the wall behind her.
The image in the frame has been flipped. This then became dreamlike and was, in itself a metaphor for what she may achieve in life. The ‘flipping’ of the framed photograph was to indicate her also looking back and reflecting on life. The other image was taken at a photography festival in France. In reality, the man in the picture has no connection with the posters behind him but I see this scene as a metaphor for modern life where the two children are competing for the attention of “their Dad” who is more interested in his phone. I also like the coincidence of his green phone case matching the advertising poster.
Of course, both pictures can be interpreted in many ways by viewers depending on their own point of view. Many viewers will simply see a picture which they either like or they don’t. Others will see merit in the visual content and some will see deeper meaning but this will doubtless be an alternative meaning to my own. This is just one point that makes visual art so compelling. Yes, Rugby is back! After a thrilling Six Nations, Youth Rugby is allowed to get going again and our players are desperate to get stuck in. The importance of grass roots sport should not be underestimated. It helps to build friendships, fitness and a sense of Community.
Being at the heart of the Community is a huge part of Shoreham Rugby. Established in 1992, who would have dreamt that we would have over 140 players within our youth ranks? We have teams starting at under 5 through to under 15’s. The aim is to see this eldest group progress all the way to Colts in a year’s time. This will be a massive achievement for Shoreham Rugby, with five of our players picked up by the RFU pathway this year; a first for Shoreham. But we would like to do more. Be more diverse and inclusive. Part of this ambition is to establish a dedicated girls team and pathway, as at twelve years old we lose the girls to other clubs. We are currently looking to recruit coaches for this opportunity.
Shoreham Youth Rugby are building year on year as we draw children from schools across the local area, with both boys and girls benefiting from RFU qualified coaches, first aiders and referees. This, as you can imagine, takes a lot of effort from many volunteers, made more challenging through the lack of a central hub. We want to be at the heart of the Community, for fans to watch, play, coach and volunteer in Rugby. We have linked up with the Adur Cricket Cluster in our early discussions with Adur Council to improve facilities.

Riding the Waves Alex Beeston, registered osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre and experienced windsurfer, suggests ways to make sure you keep upright and injury-free as you head to the sea¦ With the days getting longer and summer sea breezes on the way, there is no better time to get your windsurf fitness up for handling those bigger sails! Windsurfing is a physically demanding sport utilising almost every muscle in the body. It is therefore essential to prepare the body to reduce the chance of injury and make the most of your time on the water. In order to gain as much carry-over from training to the beach, exercises should mimic the actions we do whilst on the board, and therefore be as functional and dynamic as possible. The primary focus of windsurfing training should be on the posterior chain (hamstrings, the gluteus maximus, erector spinae muscle group, trapezius, and posterior deltoids) and core muscles. Training the ability to recruit the muscles of the back, glutes and hamstrings in unison, whilst maintaining a strong core will generate greater force output and a stronger sailing posture!
I have designed a series of key ‘windsurf specific’ exercises from an osteopathic perspective, which can be done from home with minimal equipment. These exercises optimise efficient posterior oblique sling recruitment and anti-rotation core stability. Please remember that these exercises are a guide only and it is recommended that you consult an experienced professional to ensure that they are safe for you to do, that you use the best technique and do the correct number of repetitions as well as use Inside Shoreham & Southwick April 2021

4 and 6 year old brother and sister cycle 100km raising over £1,500 for local homeless charity Turning Tides, the largest provider of support for homeless men and women across West Sussex, have praised the efforts of two young members of the local community for raising over £1,500 in just three weeks by cycling over 100km. When Cameron and Leah, just 6 and 4, were challenged by their parents to cycle 100km this January to help get fit and get out in the fresh air during the pandemic, it led to a discussion as to whether they could raise money for a local charity at the same time. Cameron and Leah first heard about the work of Turning Tides when a Harvest Appeal video was played at their school, and this sparked the inspiration to use their cycle challenge to raise money to support the charity.

Looking on the bright side It has been so easy to focus on the negative sides of the past year but, look hard enough, and it is possible to find good things that have emerged from the darkness. Your local Lions club, Adur East Lions, has had great difficulty doing any of the normal fundraising or service activities that would usually take place during the year. One of the fun activities that usually takes place twice a year is a quiz. Normally this takes place in a hall with fish and chips included in the entrance fee and prizes including wine and chocolate! The income from this particular activity is used for administration expenses of the club and is vital in enabling the club to continue functioning in the local community. On Saturday 13th March the club held their first ever quiz via zoom. Over 70 people took part and it would appear that everyone had a great time, especially in the breakout rooms! The first three teams did not appear to mind the lack of wine and chocolate and were delighted with their virtual trophies – see photos. First were the Soggy Bottoms, second the Quizzy Rascals and third the Sagalouts.

St Mary De Haura Shoreham Aren’t we lucky to have our beautiful churchyard in the heart of Shoreham? It’s a lovely place to sit and enjoy the Spring sunshine. It’s so wonderful to see it so widely used during lockdowns - the church are delighted people enjoy the space to meet, have a coffee or just walk through.
Perhaps you have noticed the Spring flowers this year? The huge drift of crocuses that pop up every February is truly a sight to delight even the weariest soul - and the snowdrops and violets too. Volunteers have recently planted over 300 tete-a-tete daffodils near the war memorial and look out for the new bluebells in May too.
Gardening volunteers are all ages – the youngest is 3 and the oldest is 94! In fact, the oldest Anthony is such a hard working gent, looking after 3 graves and all the flowerbeds! He has lovingly weeded all the flowerbeds and then planted roses, wall flowers, pansies and all manner of lovely plants. He pays for the plants himself - and then comes every week from Worthing to look after them! Truly an inspiration, he was an evacuee in the war and if you see him, do say hello. St Mary’s church has been here for 900 years and many graves have no families to look after them anymore. The gardening volunteers are just a tiny part of an amazing team who work at St Mary’s and we’ll share more news in future issues.

‘Jumping Grannie’ Jess takes to trampoline to raise funds for local hospice 78-year-old Shoreham houseboat resident, Jess Aidley, has set herself the challenge of completing 100 jumps every day for 100 days in memory of her unique friend, Ted Young, who was cared for at the end of his life by St Barnabas House hospice. Using her grandchildren’s trampoline, ‘Jumping Grannie Jess’ was inspired to fundraise from her garden after seeing London Grandfather, the ‘Skipping Sikh’, raise thousands of pounds for the NHS during lockdown last year. “My knees are not up to running marathons, but when I saw the Skipping Sikh raise money from his garden I thought, I could try something like that,” explains Jess. “I’ve been using my grandchildren’s trampoline in my garden to keep fit during lockdown, so thought ‘why not base it around that’. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is trampolining in heavy rain, but I’m determined not to miss a day. That’s the commitment I’ve made. “I’ve lived on a houseboat in Shoreham for 11 years and my garden backs on to the new Riverbank footpath. People passing seem to be quite amused by the sight of an elderly woman jumping on a trampoline! “I’ve chosen to fundraise for St Barnabas House because of the outstanding care they have given to friends, especially my friend Ted Young, in whose memory I am doing this.” Ted Young, known to many as ‘The Busker’, was a much-loved person in Shoreham and Worthing and could often be found delighting audiences with his one-man band performances. A member and regular performer at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Shoreham, it is here that Jess – a retired priest in the Anglican Church – first met Ted and his wife, Chrystabell. “Ted was held in very high esteem and in his retirement years would regularly perform for residential homes and Guildcare as well as his fundraising gigs held at the Church. He had that knack of making people feel good,” says Jess. Ted was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma – a type of cancer which affects plasma cells – in 2015, but it wasn’t until 2018 that the illness started affecting his everyday life.

“It was during this time that the phrase ‘life limiting’ was used to describe his condition and St Barnabas were mentioned as a source of help,” says Ted’s wife, Chrystabell. “I am so grateful to the hospice team, not just for their care at the end of Ted’s life, but all the way through those two years. Knowing that they were there to support us both was a relief, because, having become his carer, I was feeling quite overwhelmed.” Ted’s condition rapidly deteriorated in March 2020 and shortly after the first national lockdown he was admitted to the hospice when he could receive around-the-clock specialist care. ‘When I walked into the strangely quiet and empty hospice, I felt an enormous sense of relief,” recalls Chrystabell. “I handed the burden of care over to them and despite the masks and gloves and aprons, despite the distancing and none of the usual physical touch I know I would have received, I felt totally cared for and safe. I was able to gently let go of my burden and know he was being fully cared for. “I was supported physically, emotionally and spiritually and was able to be there with my beloved husband as he made his final journey from earth to Heaven on 9 April 2020.” Chrystabell is enormously grateful to her friend Jess for choosing to raise money for St Barnabas House, as like many charities the hospice suffered a drop in income after fundraising events were cancelled and shops were shut when the pandemic hit. Since Jess began her ‘100 jumps in 100 days’ challenge on 1 March 2021, she has already raised over £400 which will enable the hospice to be there for more people like Ted in their time of need. With the wind favourable and filling their sails, the French ships pressed their advantage and attacked. Admiral Dudley had however the better ships and crews. The oarsmen rowed making their ships as swift in manoeuvre as the French sails, plus an English ship was more heavily armed. The battle ended at dusk. Both fleets stood off from each other and dropped anchor with the English anxiously waiting for morning and the battle to resume. At dawn the French fleet had vanished, having slipped away in the darkness and D’Annebault’s flagship was spotted on the horizon sailing for France. Shoreham was saved. Judy Upton
