Shoreham Panto is going ahead– OH YES IT IS! Sadly, our planned annual pantomime production “Aladdin” has now been postponed until 2021. However, at Ropetackle Arts Centre we believe that although Aladdin can’t fly his magic carpet this year, The Show Must Go On! We have therefore designed an alternative Christmas season that will be safer for audiences and more viable for LP Creatives to produce with the current social distancing measures in place. The new show, “specially written for these extraordinary times, is called “Oh Yes It Is! “ A Family Christmas Adventure” , stars seasoned panto pros Joe Meloy and Oliver Byng and is from the same team that has made the magic happen at Ropetackle for the last eight years! Tom Beard the panto’s producer, director and writer, said: “The decision to postpone this year’s production and deliver an alternative is one that has been difficult for all involved. We have to make the right decision based on the safety of our audiences, financial viability and long-term sustainability of Shoreham’s wonderful Ropetackle venue. To put on our planned productions would not be viable with social distancing measures in place, but providing this alternative is a viable, safe and sensible option. Capacity to our alternative programme will be limited and I strongly encourage customers wishing to book to do so early as tickets are already selling fast. “This show promises to be a fun and unique experience. It is very important for children to come to the theatre to see something spectacular in real life during the festive season makes everything seem so much bigger and better! This is why it is so important for us to produce high quality family shows. “Oh Yes It Is!” will be a chance for all generations to spend Inside Shoreham & Southwick December 2020

time together at the theatre this Christmas. Not only does this time help strengthen the family bond; it helps to nurture a love of live theatre in the youngest of audience members. The story: Widow Twanky and “˜Wishy Washy” are in a spin! They hear rumour of a cancelled pantomime in Old Peking and can feel that their Christmas “Mother Goose”might well be “Sarah the Cook”(ed)! Not on your ˜Nurse Nelly” we say! Join our intrepid cast as they get in a “Muddles” and showcase a whirlwind tour of panto-land with plenty of fun, laughter and all-round pantomime madness! Can they cover every panto out there to save the day? Oh yes they can (!??) Don’ be “Idle Jack” “Dame Trott” along to the Ropetackle for a “Silly Billy” time this December! “Oh Yes It Is” continues LP Creatives growing reputation for touring some breath-taking productions around the UK. Everyone is working hard to make sure that they deliver this

particular special festive production with the magic of Christmas that this time of year deserves. Running time Approx 90 mins, including interval From 11th to 31st December. Ticket Price - £15 adults, £13 children Tickets: Box Office: 01273 464440 or www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk A SOCIALLY DISTANCED SHOREHAM PANTOMIME

WHY FINANCIAL LESSONS ARE IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN & TEENS Financial education is taught in schools, but it’s not going far enough Financial education in childhood is crucial. Attitudes and habits formed in our tentative years can have an impact in adulthood and passing on your financial knowledge and the lessons you’ve learnt to children and grandchildren can lead to them being more financially savvy and secure in the future. In fact, financial education has been part of the school curriculum since 2014 and while that introduction is positive, it’s not going far enough. The Young Persons’ Money Index found that parents are the main source of financial understanding. Less than one in ten said they received most of their financial understanding from school.

Give them pocket money: When learning about money and its value, nothing beats practical lessons. Even a small amount of pocket money each week can get children used to budgeting and saving. Teach the difference between need and want: One of the most important financial lessons for children is to learn the difference between what they need and want. This is a lesson that can help them get a handle on budgeting and planning right from the start. Set up a savings account: Saving is an important financial lesson to learn. Opening a savings account on their behalf can start a lifelong habit. Seeing how their money grows and learning how interest works can be enough motivation for them to add more.

A lack of understanding could be playing a role in how many young people worry about money. Some 69% of teens said they worry about finances, rising to Lead by example: Finally, children learn by observation. Practising what you preach is important 82% among 17-18-year olds. when it comes to passing on financial lessons. The good news is that there’s a willingness to learn. Eight in ten said they wanted to learn more about money and finance. The subjects they most want to learn about are: Mortgages; Pensions; Loans and credit cards; Tax and budgeting; Debt management. 5 tips for boosting financial knowledge in your children and grandchildren Make money part of conversations: Money can be something of a taboo subject. We rarely discuss how we invest money or what’s in our savings account. However, making it part of everyday conversation in your home can help children and teenagers grasp the financial decisions adults make.

Financial education can provide a solid foundation for financial security into adulthood. As with many milestones requiring cash, from buying a house to learning to drive, saving for a child’s future can make their transition to independence smoother. There are many products to choose from when saving or investing for a child. Please get in touch to arrange a meeting to talk over your plans and what your options are. The Compass Card: fun, free, helping to shape future provision for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities Have you heard of the Compass Card scheme? It’s the leisure discount scheme for children and young people, from birth to 25 years with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), either living or going to school in West Sussex. The scheme provides some fantastic discounts on all things leisure related across West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and the surrounding areas, making fun and leisure more accessible. In non Covid-19 times Compass Card holders could access free swimming and hundreds of discounts on things like bowling, soft play, theatre trips, eating out, farms plus many more fun things to do. The leisure discounts span West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and the surrounding areas. Once the lock-down restrictions ease these offer will once again be available to all card holders. You can see our leisure discounts and Compass Card Partners here. But what is just as important, particularly now when local authorities are having to

make extremely difficult decisions, is the Disability Register. Amaze, an independent charity in Brighton, hold the Disability Registers for West Sussex and Brighton & Hove. The registers inform the Local Authority and help to shape future provision. All data is held by Amaze and is kept secure and confidential. We need to ensure SEND communities in West Sussex are fully represented and have a voice. So how do families/guardians apply? Iit’s super quick and easy. If your child or young person has an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or receives Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP) then they are automatically eligible and an online form can be completed here. It should take no more than 15 minutes and no further evidence or documentation needs to be submitted. For more information about the Compass Card scheme visit our website; www.compasscard.org.uk or check out our Facebook page or Twitter profile.

Disabled Covid-19 survivor walks to raise funds for church hall A church fundraiser who was told he would struggle to walk again after suffering severe complications following a routine hip replacement is planning a sponsored walk.

George Hickman - who also survived Covid-19 earlier in the year - will take a seafront route from Shoreham Fort to the Church of the Good Shepherd on Tuesday, October 24, to raise vital funds for their church hall restoration project. He will be accompanied on his walk along the beach boardwalk by the Reverand Jane Bartlett, the Church’s Associate Vicar. George, aged 66, is still recovering from the lasting effects of Covid-19, several months after being placed in Worthin Hospital’s Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU). George said: “i’‘m still suffering from the effects of Covid-19. Tiredness is the worst thing. Where it will end, I have no idea but ‘m alive and glad to be. God has his intentions for me; what they are, I have no idea, but he keeps pointing me in the right direction.” George has organised the two-mile walk from Shoreham Fort to Kings Walk to raise the £2,000 required for brickwork repairs at the church hall.

groups, committee meetings, exercise classes, art classes and more. It’s vital we maintain it in good order, but the church’s finances have been hit badly by the pandemic, so we need some help from the community. Well done to George for coming up with this fund-raising idea. I do hope that people will feel moved to give and we will reach our target” To say that the two-mile route will be a major challenge for George, is an understatement and he may have to complete it in stages. He suffered serious complications after routine hip replacement surgery in 2012. Since then he has been in and out of hospital on eight occasions, undergoing treatment and surgery.

Reverand Jane said: “I’m honoured to be accompanying George on his sponsored walk. I will be carrying his medical kit and making sure he doesn’t overdo it.

George is no stranger to overcoming adversity, as he was abused by a stranger as a teenager. He also lost his sister, who died in 1984, from a tragic accident at her home.

12 On a positive note, George now heads the fund-raising team at the Church of the Good Shepherd - or the -fun-raising- team as they prefer to be known. George said, “The team is brilliant, and I am so proud to be working with them all. We are doing wonderful things for the church, with of course the aid and assistance of the local community.” Despite the constraints of Lockdown, the fund-raisers have raised over £2,140 through a series of events, including a bike repair service; pop-up sales; website cash back; a quiz and an outdoor art show. George has set up a JustGiving page and donations are already pouring in:

Befriending “ the simple power of human connection” Hello and welcome to our regular volunteering feature. This month we’re talking about Befriending: what it is, why it matters and how you can make a positive difference to someone in your community i’m Carole Claridge, the Volunteering Adviser for Adur and a volunteer myself. If you’d like to know more about befriending, or are just generally interested in volunteering, get in touch. I’d love to help you get started.

What is befriending? Most of us are lucky to have a network of family and friends around us. People we can turn to when we need to rant, or cry; when we feel lonely; need a second opinion or share happy news. Sometimes it’s just nice to chat.

These supportive relationships are hugely beneficial, but not everyone has them. There are people of all ages, and from all walks of life, who suffer from isolation, loneliness and lack of social interaction. By matching volunteer befrienders with people who would otherwise be socially isolated, befriending creates these meaningful connections and supportive, reliable friendships that make life better. Why does it matter? Loneliness is a modern epidemic. Despite being connected 24-7 through technology, too many people are missing real human interaction. This lack of human connection has a negative effect on our mental well-being and many people feel more Inside Shoreham & Southwick December 2020

alone than ever. The current Covid-19 lockdown restrictions and the onset of winter are adding to people’s feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Having a regular phone call or meeting with a befriender can make all the difference.

Who can be a befriender? Are you a good listener and interested in other people? Are you reliable and respectful? Then you have what it takes to become an excellent befriender. You don’t need any specific experience or qualifications. Perhaps you sometimes feel lonely yourself. Befriending is a wonderful way of creating meaningful connections in your own life and boosting your self-esteem. Evidence shows volunteers are just as likely to benefit from befriending as those they connect with.

If you’re short of time, don’t let that deter you. Being a befriender is not a big commitment. If you only have one hour a fortnight, that can still make all the difference. However, befriending works best when you make a regular commitment, ideally six months or more. And you will be supported along the way. cont/d page 36

Kingston Malthouse In 1838 a cargo ship full of barley became stuck on a sand bar at Newhaven harbour. This influenced the decision of the Vallance, Catt & Co brewery based in West Street, Brighton, to build a Malthouse near to Shoreham Harbour, to cut their transport costs for raw ingredients and fuel. The brewery had already replaced the expensive to keep mill horses with steam engines to power its malt grinders and water pumps. The brewery had also already established a Malthouse in 1816 in Southwick, but it was decided a much larger premises was needed for the expanding business. The site chosen was at Kingston By Sea, (between Shoreham and Southwick) on land owned by William Pennington Gorringe. A 99 year lease was drawn up in which it was stipulated a £22 weekly rent would be paid commencing from the 24th of June 1844. The terms and conditions of the lease stated that the Malthouse was to be insured up to a maximum of £1500 and that it was to be well maintained. Upon expiry of the lease the building and its equipment were to be surrendered to the landlord. Edmund Vallance died on the 4th of April 1849 and his wife wanted to sell his half of the business. The potential buyers were his brothers. James and Charles Vallance and Henry Catt but a price could not be agreed. An alternative solution was for the Vallance and Catt families to buy out other shareholders to create West Street Brewery Ltd.

In 1874, William Pennington Gorringe died and the family estate passed to his son Hugh Gorringe. In 1878 he put up the lease on the Malthouse as collateral on a £18,000 loan from George Wilder and Charles Hore. In 1888 unable to keep up with the interest repayments Hugh Gorringe arranged for the Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Society to repay the loan. He then borrowed £16,000 from Scottish Equitable Life, then owing them £34,000 with the Malthouse lease again as collateral. In 1891 he then borrowed a further £6,000 bringing the total amount owed to £40,000 plus interest. In 1896 the Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Society took ownership of the Malthouse lease and sold it for £1,050 to industrialist Henry Willett. Willett was the son of William Catt but had changed his name to inherit £13,000.as that was a condition of his late older sister’s will. With a one off payment of £67 Henry Willett was able to claim back the land tax already paid on the Malthouse. Henry Willett was a founding father of Brighton Museum. He gifted his extensive fossil collection he had excavated on the Sussex Downs to the museum in 1903. In that same year he sold the Malthouse lease cont/d page 38

Sea swimming Find your own bit of wild Anyone who walks our local beaches regularly will have noted the upsurge of people taking to the water to ‘dip’ or swim over the past 8 months.

First it was the beautiful weather encouraging visitors to flock to our beaches during Lockdown 1. Now, during Lockdown 2 it appears that the keener (or more desperate) of our residents have decided that enough is not enough. That they’re going to take on the cold and go for it.

For a myriad of reasons – it’s a challenge, it’s sociable, it’s an escape from the grind of Covid life and it is the equivalent of lighting a bunsen burner inside and setting yourself alight. If you were depressed, anxious, simply cheesed off or feeling utterly uninspired before, when you get out of the water be assured your state of mind will have changed. Dopamine & endorphin alert! It is not just for the superhuman; sea swimming is for ‘normal’ people. Yes, your heart rate and blood pressure will be elevated when entering the water so check with a doctor if worried. And the risk of hypothermia is very real. As much from the air temperature as well as water temperature.

Getting out before you start feeling cold and taking enough clothes for afterwards is essential. As is taking along a friend for company and safety.

When getting in choose your tide and swim spot carefully. Go in slowly then spend the first 2 minutes concentrating on steady breathing with nice, long exhales and try to be patient whilst your body acclimatises to

its surroundings.

You don’t have to be a ‘good’ swimmer to do this. You barely need to take your feet off the bottom if in calm water. You don’t have to put your face in either so a groovy bobble hat could be just the ticket. In fact, humans in water lose most of their heat through their heads so some kind of hat whether woolly, latex or neoprene really helps keep heat in. The brighter the colour the better – so you can be seen more easily in the water. Brightly coloured tow floats too have become really popular for visibility and handy to rest and float with if you need a breather.

There are many different types of swimmer in the waters off Shoreham, from sunrise and sunset dippers, to a lady training for a 2-way Channel attempt next year. Without exception I have found all the people I’ve met on the beach and in the water over the past few years, a joy to be with. What better start to the day than to meet with a bunch of upbeat people, whooping as we enter the sea, then bidding each other fond farewells as we hastily pull on layers of clothing and head off for work, school or wherever we will be spending cont/d page 18

our day. We are all so profoundly grateful we live somewhere we can do this. Shoreham is unique in that it has a real variety of spots to swim at. These include the river and harbour which are invaluable when the weather is too rough to swim off the main beach. You can check out more information on open water swimming at www. outdoorswimming society.com. There is a

Facebook page for Worthing, Lancing and Shoreham Seaswimmers. If you are going for the first time, find someone experienced to dip with who is familiar with local conditions, or a teacher to take you in - there are several on Shoreham Beach. Sompting Wildlife Rescue It’s fair to say that over this year, so many of us have found ourselves reconnecting and reappreciating nature in all kinds of ways. We’re so lucky to live in an area of the country surrounded by wildlife both in urban and more rural places.

Wildlife has always been a huge part of mine and my family’s lives. Both myself and my husband are veterinary nurses with over 50 years in the job between us, so animals are ingrained in our life. Through our nursing work we have had the wonderful experience of treating many creatures, and it is these experiences that drove us to start bring the odd bird, rabbit or hedgehog home some 15 years ago. Wild creatures who were destined to be released back into the wild if only someone would give them the time and treatment needed to heal and recover... That was us, that was where we came in.

Over time Peter and I were joined by our 3 wonderful daughters, Freya, Aimee and Isla. As soon as they could get involved we encouraged them to do so, which has meant that all these years down the line we are truly working as a team.

Local vets, friends and friends of friends gradually started to bring more wildlife to us until Peter decided we should take the leap and officially become a rescue in 2018. It was then that Sompting Wildlife Rescue was born. In the time that’s passed since, we have experienced highs and lows with patients of all kinds, but we have learned lots. Pigeons that have been released to fly again following a lucky escape from a sparrowhawk, an owl who had been hit by a car and sustained a head injury, a badger cub whose mum had failed Inside Shoreham & Southwick December 2020

to return to feed him, herring gulls with broken legs and wings who with a little TLC have gone on to soar high above the waves again. NOTHING beats that feeling of giving these creatures back to nature! We are only a small set up working entirely from home, alongside full time jobs and school, and we are here soley for the purpose of taking on the longer term cases that may require intensive care and additional time to recuperate. Theses are the cases that might otherwise have no where else to go. It’s true, we can’t always fix every patient, and many tears have been shed over animals who have stolen our hearts: but Sompting Wildlife Rescue give each and every creature that comes our way the same care and attention as each other and we are rooting for them as soon as they arrive. Around a month ago we went through the process of becoming a registered charity, which was successful. We are now a fully fledged wildlife rescue charity working to support local vets, other wildlife organisations and the wider community. We offer advice as well as treatment

Leading Lines and Pattern Lines Photographic composition can be enhanced by using visual tricks to lead the eye of the viewer around the picture. Leading lines, for instance, can take the eye to a distant point of interest. It could be something as basic as a path with a sculpture at the end or it could be more subtle or more complex, it’s up to you, the photographer. I have given four examples of how lines can work in different ways. The image of the red shoes and red roses uses an unglamorous gutter to lead the eye to the legsat the top of the frame. This was a street performance by a dancer who changedshoes several times throughout her presentation so I felt it was important to ensurethat this small detail was emphasised. The picture of guy on the bench uses shadows and street furniture to lead the eye to the smaller figure pushing his bike up the hill as he completes the scene. The other two images use repeating lines as patterns to add visual interest to the scene. Conversion to monochrome enhances the light and shade created by the wooden slats, boards and railings on Hastings Pier, taking your eye in different directions and the vertical lines behind the cyclist taken at Shoreham Port. Set yourself a project, go out with your camera or smartphone and look for lines, straight or curved, to use as composition in your photographs. Diagonals work well and have strong impact. Getting Unstuck

It’s been such a difficult year for almost everyone on the planet – many of us have felt an impact on our mind, body and our energy levels.

Jenny Davys, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains how just a couple of minutes moving your body with your breath may help you relieve and prevent aches and pains and maybe even help relieve stress. Please STOP these exercises if you feel any pain other than a gentle stretch.

feeling your shoulderblades moving down against your ribs. Do this three times. UPPER BACK

SHOULDERS & NECK Breathe IN as you bring both shoulders up towards your ears. Hold for 3 seconds and then let the shoulders drop back down with a breath OUT (say “HA!” if no-one is listening!). Repeat three times. Now breathing normally, roll your shoulders up to your ears and then let them roll backwards,

Sit comfortably with feet on the floor. Place your left hand on your right knee. Keep your hips still, and as you breathe OUT, gently rotate your back to the right as far as is comfortable – try to keep your shoulders level and your neck in line with your breastbone (so you don’t overstretch your neck).cont’d p37

Fingers Crossed! Writing this half-way through November it is very hard for your local Lions Club to predict what they will or will not be able to do come December. BUT, if we all come out of lockdown without further restrictions this is what they are planning to do: 5 December “attend the Southwick Square Christmas Market with a stall selling homemade Christmas decorations and gifts and with their sleigh and Santa 12 December “ attend the Shoreham Farmers™ Market with the sleigh and Santa. 14-18 December “ take the sleigh round the streets of Southwick and Fishersgate with Santa (socially distanced!) The club now has a contactless card reader to take donations if you are one of the many people not now carrying cash with you. It has been hard for all charities this year in terms of being able to fundraise and, subsequently, help those in need; so if you are at one of these events please give the Lions a wave and a friendly smile and, if

possible, make a donation. If you are unable to attend any of these events but still want to help you could join the 200 club for just £20 for the year which raises funds for the Lions club but also gives you the chance to win cash prizes“ for details please see the website page at www.adureastlions.org.uk/200club. David’s story Last year, David’s mum and dad died within a couple of months of each other, and both received expert, loving care at St Barnabas House. David has shared his experience. My dad, Bill, had been living with advanced prostate cancer. But as his condition advanced, it was clear he was approaching the end of his life. Dad agreed to visit the hospice to see what they could do to relieve his symptoms and ease his pain. The medical care and knowledge he received there was extraordinary, and everyone made a huge fuss of dad. It was coming up to his 90th birthday and the nurses piled into his room and we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ together. Dad had such a big smile on his face, and next day he came home to us. Dad lived for 10 more weeks and the Hospice at Home team came out to him every day. In those precious weeks we got to sit, talk and share favourite family stories. It was a dignified, peaceful, even beautiful death. A few days later, my mum, Joan, had a fall at home. Her GP insisted she have some tests. At dad’s funeral, mum and I kept the news of the tests quiet. But then the results came back. Mum had advanced liver and lung cancer, and she only had weeks to live. It was a huge shock for all of us and, once again, St Barnabas came to the rescue. The hospice team bent over backwards to find mum a bed and we found ourselves back in those familiar, bright surroundings Inside Shoreham & Southwick December 2020

Looking back, the overwhelming memory I have is of being surrounded by kindness. Will you join me in making a gift to St Barnabas House this Christmas? Visit www.stbh.org.uk/christmasappeal

38 they sold the Malthouse in 1954 to Bass Charrington.

to its sitting tenant, West Street Brewery Ltd for £4,467 in which he was now a shareholder.

The Malthouse was a large, long multistorey building initially with two kilns and a third was added with additional coal stores, carts and stables to create an east wing, circa 1914. The Malthouse workers were highly skilled in the complex process of brewing and a Mr Upton was one of the employees. Walter Maxim was the foreman and the manager was Mr Kingsley Willett. The Malthouse was known to have some very large cats prowling the premises and their size was because they were efficient rat catchers, protecting the grain. Smithers & Sons Ltd took over West Street Brewery Ltd and it became a subsidy until Smithers folded in 1927. The West Street Brewery Ltd then sold off the Malthouse in 1931 to Abbey’s Brewery. In 1933 they became the Kemp Town Brewery and

With a decline in the industry in 1969, Bass Charrington closed the Malthouse and sold it to West Sussex County Council for £30,000. Sadly after standing for 127 years this historic building was demolished to clear the land for the Shoreham bypass.
