t’s British Tomato Fortnight from the 20th May 2019 – celebrating our glorious British Tomatoes – containing vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and natural pigments, these humble superfoods are a tasty and natural snack which, not only taste great, but are also extremely good for you! Why buy British tomatoes? Four out of five tomatoes now eaten in the UK are imported, which is not good news for the British tomato grower. Julie Woolley, of the British Tomato Growers’ Association, explains… ‘Protected from the elements in their greenhouse and nurtured by our growers, British Tomatoes
are bursting with flavour. However, buying British isn’t just about supporting local growers, it’s about buying the freshest and tastiest tomatoes available and the range is superb! It’s useful to know, the redder the tomato when it is picked the higher the lycopene content, so British tomatoes are picked ripe and in the stores within a couple of days. Imported fruit has a longer journey so often ripens on the journey and not on the vine.’ Lycopene helps fight cancer… ‘According to studies, tomatoes contain large amounts of the antioxidant lycopene, that is effective in lowering the risk of cancer, especially lung, stomach and prostate cancers. In order to enjoy a larger increase in lycopene, cook the tomatoes or opt for processed versions such as tomato juice, sauce, soup and puree’ – Barny Chappell, Consultant Urological Surgeon. Tomatoes have a number of other health benefits. Dominique Ludwig, Nutritional Therapist, based at The Boxgrove Wellbeing Centre explains ‘botanically a fruit, they are still mostly classed as a vegetable! They are a rich source of lycopene, beta carotene and lutein which are powerful phytonutrients and antioxidants, believed to defend our body cells from aging and damage, reduce inflammation, be cardio protective, support liver function and research has shown that lutein can protect the eyes and may slow down macular degeneration associated with aging. They contain prebiotic fibres, feeding the beneficial bacteria in our digestive system and helping with normal bowel movements. Pectin, a soluble fibre found in tomatoes is believed to bind to toxins as well as cholesterol as they pass through the gut, helping to remove them from the body.’ In short, tomatoes with their cherry red colour are a powerhouse of antioxidants and fibre which can benefit the digestive health and are of great benefit to the diet.’

St Barnabas House invites you to participate in its Sunflower Memories Appeal
he appeal enables supporters and friends of St Barnabas House to make a donation in memory of a loved one. In return for a donation, we have a lovely sunflower marker onto which the name of your loved one can be written. Each sunflower will be planted in the hospice grounds for the month of June 2019. On Friday 14 June at 6pm and Saturday 15 June at 10.30am, our Lead Chaplain, Stephen Gurr, will conduct a blessing in memory of all those for whom a sunflower has been dedicated. Melinda’s Dad, Graham, was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in 2017. More than anything, he wanted to spend his last days at St Barnabas. Melinda remembers what it was like when they first arrived at the hospice: “Because we knew it was a relief for him, it was a relief for all of us. We knew we’d got him to where he needed to be. As soon as you walk through the door at St Barnabas, you can feel a weight off your shoulders. You can feel them taking the pressure and stress away. Dad was in St Barnabas for twelve days in total. At the end it was very peaceful. Now I just feel that I want to support St Barnabas in any way I can because I realise how much it gave to my dad at the end and also what it’s still giving to the family.” Will you remember a loved one with a sunflower dedicated in their memory?

Swifts – the sound of summer
T
ony Benton, from the Shoreham and District Ornithological Society, focusses on one of the fastest birds in the sky. By the beginning of May, Swifts will be arriving back from their winter holidays in tropical Africa. These absolutely amazing birds fly an estimated 125,000 miles a year!!! In fact, they spend almost their entire lives on the wing – even sleeping – and they feed in flight, hoovering up an estimated 20,000 flying insects in a day! Swifts are relatively easy to identify with their all-dark plumage, scythe-shaped wings, and as their name suggests, they are dazzlingly quick in flight. They can often be seen and heard when they are flying close to their nest sites; they have a screaming, high pitched, call that is unmistakable. For me it’s the sound of summer. But like so many birds, Swift numbers have fallen dramatically in recent years (50% over the past 15 to 20 years), and we risk not being able to enjoy them for too much longer. Around Shoreham there are places where Swifts can still be enjoyed. For example, around Eastern Avenue and Middle Road, and also around the church in the centre of Shoreham, close to the High Street. Swifts are only with us for a very short time, arriving in late April and early May, and usually departing again for East Africa and the Congo by early to mid-August. So look and listen, and you too might enjoy the spectacle of Swifts feeding high in the sky, or ‘screaming’ as they fly in a tight knit group around their nesting colony. Nature is right on our urban doorstep; we just need to stop, look and listen. Happy Weed Hunting W hat a good end to the spring we have had so far. Lovely temperatures at Easter and the weather has been better than average for the time of year, but we have still had some decent amounts of rain, and very little frost. That’s always a good start for the garden as it comes into its most active time and starts to burst into a myriad of colours. May is normally a warm month, but still often wet. Whilst the plants you have planted are still in their infancy and slowly growing, the weeds absolutely thrive in these conditions. You can literally see them taking over an area in a matter of days. Try measuring a weed. It can literally put on inches in a day.
Most weeds can easily put on this sort of growth, so you really need to keep on top of them. Not only can they look untidy, but they can seriously affect the growth of your plants. Think of a weed as a bit like someone extra coming to an already packed dining table and squeezing in, and taking all the room and the food. They take food, light, water and growing room from the things you want to grow, so getting rid of them is a really important job in the garden. Although it can be a grotty job, it will have a big impact on the rest of the plants in the bed that they share with the weeds Weed killer in certain circumstances can be an option, but there is always a danger of harming other plants. If you do need to use them near other plants, then a simple trick is to cut a plastic drink bottle in half. Place the top of the bottle over the weed and squirt the weed killer through the neck of the bottle. That way it only goes over the plant you want and doesn’t get blown by the wind onto your precious plants. You also need to be careful where the weedkiller goes when you are walking around. I have seen instances where someone has unknowingly got the weedkiller on their shoes, only to tread it over the lawn, and then been confronted by brown dead footprints in the lawn days later! Always be careful which ones you use and seek advice from where you buy it from. You really should avoid using any old ones in the sheds. Many older ones have substances in them that have been banned for either the damage it does to wildlife or to you, so be warned. If you have any old ones, then dispose of them safely and start afresh. If you do have an area that is badly infested with weeds then they can be cleared surprisingly quickly by hand. It is very gratifying to get a small area clear. Make sure you get out any roots and I always recommend throwing them away or burning them, rather than risking putting any of them on the compost. They have evolved to survive in the less favourable conditions and will soon spring back into life if you are not careful. Once you are clear of them then it’s a lot easier to keep them under control, by either hoeing the soil, which cuts the heads of them off and takes minutes to clear a large area, or by covering the area with some weed fabric or mulch. Whilst it’s not the most exciting job, it can be one of the most satisfying and it can make a lot of difference to how the garden will look and thrive in the coming months, so happy weed hunting and fingers crossed for better weather! TWO BIG VOICES SET TO MAKE WAVES AT ROPETACKLE

wo of Europe’s most admired vocalists are appearing on the same stage when Jo Harman and Elles Bailey come to the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham on Thursday 23rd May. Headliner Jo is an award-winning international touring and recording artist proclaimed by the as ‘UK’s finest female soul blues voice’ who, according to Classic Rock, writes ‘lip-biting beautiful songs’. Bristol-based Elles is enjoying similar success, her latest release, the aptly named ‘Road I Call Home’, has already garnered some 500,000 Spotify streams since release and the album currently sits proudly in both the UK Official Country and Americana Charts, already having been number 1 in the hot new releases Amazon blues chart. This is not the first time both ladies have appeared together. Having first met at one of Jo’s West Country shows, Jo subsequently invited Elles to be the support act on her 2017 ‘People We Become Tour’ and this Sussex show is a rare chance to see the pair reunited when Elles opens the Shoreham show as Jo’s very special guest. Says Jo ‘Elles is one the hardest working people in the business, showing us all just how to an independently minded artist can achieve success on their own terms. Apart from being extremely talented, Elles also one of the nicest people I know, so I’m looking forward to seeing her again at Ropetackle on 23rd May’. Radio 2 play-listed artist Jo, who Rag N Bone man took to Twitter to proclaim ‘one of Britain’s finest talents’, is touring to promote the release of her double EP set ‘Found A Place’ from which the single ‘Cloudy’ has itself attracted rave

reviews; BBC London’s Robert Elms called it ‘his favourite music of the moment’ whilst Echoes Magazine Editor, Chris Wells, proclaimed Jo ‘probably UK’s finest vocalist’ on the basis of its release. The Donkeys are Coming!

t’s full steam ahead for anyone associated with Adur East Lions Club from now until 2 June! (Although the planning for the event actually started back in November.) There are activities and excitement to interest all age ranges. The following words give some indication of what is on offer: Funfair, beer tent, classic cars, donkey rides, donkey races, tote, stalls, tea tent, cakes, static engines, children’s rides, birds of prey, freestyle karate, Shoreham Allstars, Sompting Village Morris, wine or water, hook a duck, facepainting. Those who have lived in Shoreham for many years will remember this event as the Adur Vintage Transport Rally and the classic vehicles that display on the day pay homage to this event. Donkeys were introduced some years ago to appeal to a wider range of the community as this is seen by the Lions as a community event. Jockeys are needed to ride in the races so if you know a young person between the ages of 10 and 15 who weighs under 8 stone and who is in possession of their own riding hat then please get in touch. Stalls are available at a cost of £30 and registered charities pay half as much at £15. Help will be needed on the day from 8am in the morning until 6pm. So if you can spare an hour or two and fancy helping to set up the arena and the gazebos, or staffing the stalls, or leading the donkeys, or clearing up at the end the Lions would be very grateful. The Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally is a fundraising event but it is also a service to the community. Service (or helping others) is really what Lions are all about and on 6 April several members of Adur East Lions joined forces with Tracy Vise and her friends and family to litter pick along the footpath at the back of Downsway in Southwick. 23 bags of rubbish were collected along with an assortment of bicycle wheels, chairs, rusty garden implements etc. It was great to see young and not-so-young working together to help others. This may well become a regular event publicised on a new Facebook group page set up by Tracy – Tidy up in Adur.

JUST IN CASE: PROTECTING AGAINST INCOME CUTS You may assume you’ll never need it, but if you experience redundancy or illness, you may become eligible for universal credit. However, if you imagined that the state would provide enough support in the event of financial difficulty due to sickness or unemployment, it’s time to think again. The government is rolling out universal credit, a new single payment system designed to replace six existing state benefits. Universal Credit is expected to be adopted nationwide by 2023. However, delays to implementation and complaints that the switch is leading to financial hardship have caused controversy. Universal credit is paid monthly to those who are out of work, as well as to people in work but on low incomes. It replaces the following benefits: Child tax credit; Housing benefit; Income support; Income-based jobseeker’s allowance (JSA); Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA) and Working tax credit. Relying on the state benefit system to provide an adequate safety net if you lose your job or you are too ill to work is generally unwise. It is designed to provide a basic standard of living and may not cover your mortgage or full rental payments. The amount paid under universal credit will depend on a range of factors, including your housing costs, number of children, other earnings or savings, and whether you have an existing disability. before a set date – usually retirement, or the end of a mortgage term. This is often a cost-effective option, because premiums are low as the chances of claiming are relatively low. However, should the worst happen, the lump sum can help ease financial worries at a difficult time. Critical illness insurance pays a fixed lump sum payment if you are diagnosed with a specified serious illness, including most types of cancer, stroke and heart disease. Income protection insurance pays a monthly amount – usually a fixed portion of your regular earnings – if you cannot work because of illhealth. Free Drop-in Sessions for Later Life Legal Advice Sussex solicitor to offer guidance at Shoreham care home

ree drop-in sessions for anyone in Shorehamby-Sea wishing to discuss their later life plans will be available every Thursday between 10am-4pm at one of the town’s care homes. Barchester Care Home, Kingsland House, has partnered with local solicitors Cognitive Law to offer appointments to the local community starting in April. Later Life Solicitor Richard Bates will be based at Kingsland House to speak with residents, their families and anyone from the local community wishing to discuss their later life planning. Richard offers a range of legal and practical advice on all aspects surrounding planning for life in older age. These include the preparation of Wills, Powers of Attorney, but also care finding and funding, as well as wealth management and protection. Karen Howell, Manager of Kingsland House said “We are delighted to have Richard join us on Thursdays. His legal advice will be invaluable to our residents and their families, staff and the local community. We welcome anyone from the local community to drop in while he is with us on a Thursday to discuss their personal affairs.” No appointments are required; it is a free drop in session at a convenient time for the visitor. Volunteers needed to Make it a Night to Remember
S
t Barnabas House is appealing for 200 course marshal volunteers to help support walkers at this year’s Night to Remember midnight walk taking place on Saturday 29 June 2019. Now in its 12th year, the 2019 event is set to be the biggest yet, with over 1,000 supporters walking through the night to help raise money for the hospice’s night sitting service. However, in order for the event to run smoothly a team of volunteer marshals is needed to cheer on walkers, hand out refreshments, give directions and keep walkers safe. Sophie Henderson from the Events Team at St Barnabas House said: “Night to Remember is only made possible thanks to our amazing volunteer marshals who act as our eyes and ears on the ground. We need volunteer marshals lining the 7, 13.1 and 20 mile routes and have shifts available between 7pm on Saturday 29 June and 7am on Sunday 30 June. Any amount of time people can offer will make a massive difference. Whether you come on your own or with a friend, everyone always has a lot of fun. This year, we’re providing volunteer marshals with glow products so they can light up their section of the course which will look spectacular along the route. Volunteers can also get creative and bring their own light installations.” Dickie Dowsett, 68, from Lancing has volunteered as a course marshal at Night to Remember for over 12 years. Dickie said: “The atmosphere is always colourful, happy, full of fun and excited anticipation. It feels nice to be part of something that’s doing good. My days are usually full with stuff to do but one night out is no real hardship. Usually we make the marshalling into a bit of a boys night out with a curry at 2am!” Dickie has many fond memories of volunteering at Night to Remember which include: “Dressing up as Tweedledee and Tweedledum for the night, meeting a woman who walked the whole event in high heels and having my photo taken at the 10-year finishing gate.” Interested in volunteering as a course marshal at Night to Remember? HMS LIZARD
R
oyal Navy land bases are given ship’s names and Shoreham Harbour’s base was called HMS Lizard. It was founded on the 7th of October 1942 by its commanding officer Lieutenant Commander Francis Cyril Masson Evans, RNVR. HMS Lizard was home to the Combined Operations Landing Craft. There was a guardroom on Butt’s Baltic Wharf in the Aldrington basin. Ratings accommodation and the maintenance depot were on John Brown’s Wharf, with some personnel billeted in ships moored in the harbour. Further accommodation plus offices were requisitioned in hotels across Hove. Captain Phillip Hordern RN became commanding officer of HMS Lizard on the 22nd of February 1943. On many occasions, the Royal Marines and Royal Navy crews were roused from their beds in the early hours and put on Southdown buses to the harbour. Once there they’d man the landing crafts on night training exercises, in which they would land upon the beaches of the south coast. In preparation for Operation Jubilee - the raid on Dieppe Port - the Royal Navy’s 4th and 5th landing craft flotillas were supposed to be moved in secret in the dead of night to the harbour. However having got the tide wrong, many craft ran aground on the surrounding beaches and were easily spotted. Canadian Army Lieutenant Colonel D. Menard liased with Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander J.H. Dathan over the embarkation plan and final details of the operation at Lancing College. Lancing College had been given the ship’s name HMS King Alfred with the suffix ‘L’ to distinguish it from a base with the same name at Hove. Captain John Noel Pelly CBE RN commanded both shore bases until his sudden death on the 6th of June 1945 at the age of 57. He was buried with full military honours; his coffin carried on a gun carriage to All Saints churchyard with a ceremonial guard provided by HMS Lizard. Captain Pelly was a cricketer appearing in the Royal Navy team in the 1920’s. He had served on the cruiser HMS Gibraltar and the battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Iron Duke in the First World War. The 803 Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel Flotilla of the Royal Marines operated from HMS Lizard from 1943 until their
redeployment in 1944. This was to allow Shoreham Harbour to be crammed with ships, as part of the essential military build up for the invasion of Europe. On D-Day, the 6th of June 1944, landing craft from Shoreham Harbour arrived on Sword Beach in Normandy to deploy minesweeping flail tanks and troops of the British 3rd Infantry Division. The beach ran from Lion Sur Mer to the French port of Ouistreham, which connected to the Oran canal. It had been a tourist destination before the war, populated with holiday homes. Field Marshall Erin Rommel had previously visited Ouistreham on an inspection of its defences. He had found them to be poorly prepared and was quoted to have said to his staff “If they come they will come here.” In August 1945, command of HMS Lizard was assigned to Captain Walter Charles Townsend Eyres, who was known as Wallace. Wallace had served on board with the 5th Flotilla at the Dardanelles and with the Grand Fleet in the First World War. In the 1920s, Wallace had been a keen rugby player. He had made his England debut at Twickenham on the 12th of February 1927 in the Five Nations against Ireland when England had won 8-6. On the 5th of March 1927, he had captained the Royal Navy side that had beaten the Army team tipped to win the Services Rugby tournament. HMS Lizard was closed on the 31st of December 1945 with Captain Eyres retiring in April 1946, after thirty-eight years in the Royal Navy. He became the General Manager of White City Stadium until 1960. A landing craft sits on the Holmbush traffic roundabout today as a memorial to the D-day invasion.

It’s like walking on a stone… By Ian Linane - Podiatrist
T
his is one way people describe pain in the ball of their foot when they come to see Ian at PodiaClinic. Initially, it feels like a momentary dull ache and slight bruising. Then, over a period of time, it progresses to feeling like walking on a stone. A sharp, sudden sensation as your weight passes over the ball of your foot. It is annoying enough when doing simple daily tasks but if you run or walk for a hobby these moments of pain can spoil your leisure. Indeed, some are concerned it is going to curb their life and lifestyle.
What might it be?
Surprisingly, this is a common experience and frequently involves an area at the bottom of the 2nd toe, where it joins a long metatarsal bone, in the ball of the foot. Based on the above symptoms it is less likely a serious problem within the joint itself and more to do with little ligaments that sit at the bottom of a toe and cross over a joint.
Commonly, sensations like this might mean one of the ligaments between the 2nd toe bone and the long metatarsal bone are undergoing more strain than they like. As such they might inflame and become vulnerable to being pinched by the bones in the ball of the foot as we walk over it.
Can we stop the pain?
Caught in its early stages this is quite easily assessed and helped in a podiatry clinic. It might be a case of taping the relevant toe in a particular way for a while. The longer the situation is left it might mean the use of temporary shoe orthoses (inserts) to change how the ball of the foot takes the weight. Occasionally orthoses can be required more long term. T
his month, following on from the theme of running and Marathons, we take a look at the common injury Shin Splints.
What are Shin Splints?
Medial tibial stress syndrome, better known as shin splints, is a painful condition to the inside of your shins, made worse by high impact activities such as walking with heavy back packs, running or dancing. There are 2 distinct types, which affect specific tissues of the shin:
Type One – Due to a stress reaction to the inside border of the shin bone. Type Two – Due to an irritation of the outer surface of the bone, called the periostium, where the calf muscles attach and pull.
What causes it?
There are various reasons why this condition can occur, mostly being linked to overuse. Sportspeople regularly doing high impact on hard surfaces are affected most. Lack of cushion in shoes or trainers can contribute. Also, poor body mechanics can affect how you strike the ground during sport, and therefore the lower back, hips and knees can all contribute if the surrounding muscles are not strong.
