elcome to the April Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. Firstly, I wish you all a very Happy Easter! As I write this, the sun is shining. The change from winter to spring is invigorating. The promise of more days outside enjoying our long walks with our new puppy is something I am looking forward to. At this time of year, the garden will certainly need more attention with grass needing a trim. Also, there is much tidying to do in the borders and getting everything just right for summer. With so much to do we have the latest gardening tips from Mark on what tasks we should be doing over the coming weeks. We also have all our local articles and advice this month. Keith Relf and his team are giving advice on investing! We have a number of charities, beer festivals and news on what is happening around Shoreham and Southwick. Additionally, we have the latest films at the Ropetackle Art Centre and local events occurring locally as well as some further out. We hope that you enjoy this month’s edition and we welcome any feedback on how we can improve and make the magazine and local business directory something better for everyone to read. Thousands of local workers to benefit from discount travel

ocal businesses are encouraged to sign up to an exciting new scheme which has already seen more than 5,000 local workers across Adur and Worthing eligible to benefit from discounts on rail and bus travel. More than ten local businesses and organisations have joined easitADUR & WORTHING, a collaboration between Adur & Worthing Councils and leading social enterprise easit. Workers are not only offered discounts on peak and off peak travel and season tickets, but also reductions on bikes and car hire, as well as other initiatives which promote more environmentally friendly travel. The scheme aims to encourage people to travel more sustainably for both work and leisure in an effort to reduce carbon emissions, one of the leading causes of climate change. It can also improve staff health and wellbeing, as well as address congestion and parking problems. West Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundations Trust is one of the organisations which has already signed up to the scheme and hosted the first easitADUR & Worthing network meeting: Suzanne Fisher, Associate Director of Facilities at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:

“The new Adur and Worthing easitNETWORK is excellent news for Western Sussex Hospitals staff and so we were delighted to host the launch event at Worthing Hospital.” “Membership of the easit scheme is a key element of our Green Travel Plan, which helps reduce car emissions and traffic congestion by providing employees with discounts to public transport, out of town Park & Ride car parks and improved facilities for cyclists and motorbike users.” Cllr Dan Humphreys, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, said: “We are really pleased that so many businesses in Adur and Worthing have decided to sign up to the scheme. Encouraging staff to think more about sustainable transport options is another step forward in our work to become more sustainable. Charity urgently seeks volunteer sailors

Sussex disability charity is urgently looking for volunteers who can sail, so that they can support its members as they take to the water. Sussex Sailability needs to recruit up to twelve volunteers who can help the Shoreham based charity from the spring. They would enable disabled sailors to learn and enjoy the sport, in a safe and controlled environment, on the charity’s specially adapted boats. Kevin Headon of Sussex Sailability said, “There’s nothing like feeling the freedom of the water, it’s a lifechanging experience for our sailors – some of whom have had very little experience of sailing when they join us. “At the moment we can’t provide enough sessions for all our sailors, because we just don’t have enough volunteers. So, if you can sail and have a little spare time then we’d really welcome your help. “We need experienced skippers, especially small keelboat or dingy sailors, but we are also looking for those who have a background in sailing who are willing to learn. Additionally, we need safety boat qualified volunteers, ideally with a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Safety Boat qualification or people with a PB2 licence who would like to work towards their Safety Boat qualification. “Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, especially when you see the positive difference that you are making to someone’s life. We provide all the training that’s needed and free or highly subsidised nationally recognised RYA qualifications.

“All we ask is that you commit to at least one day each month supporting us over the summer.” Chris Hodge is the chairman of Sussex Sailability and has been sailing since he was paralysed in a sporting accident sixteen years ago. He said: “I love that sailing has given me the opportunities for adventure and competition that I enjoyed before my accident. Sussex Sailability’s fleet of boats, which are adapted for use by disabled people, allow me to get out on the water and to take part in races alongside ablebodied people. “Volunteers are an important part of Sussex Sailability; helping to keep the boats in good condition, getting them ready to go sailing and allowing disabled sailors to learn, improve their skills and get the most from their sailing. This enables Sussex Sailability to make sailing one of the few sports that is totally inclusive for disabled people.” Sussex Sailability is based at Shoreham’s Sussex Yacht Club, which is soon to begin work on building a new clubhouse and facilities that have been specifically designed to be easily accessible to sailors with disabilities. A New Lease of Life

he clocks have moved forward, and the days are definitely starting to stretch out which is so nice to see. Even in between the showers it definitely feels like winter is behind us and Spring is here, and the longer evenings give a sense of a new lease of life and freedom to get out and make use of the time. We are already moving past the best shows of Daffodils, with Tulips beginning to show their heads. I thought I would touch on one of my bugbears this month. Since recycling and reducing waste is high on the list with many of us now, it really is time you should be making the best of using compost heaps. If they are used correctly, they can be a good source of cheap compost for the garden and can help cut down the amount of waste going in the bins, which is becoming more important.

If used correctly is the important point. Time and time again I go into gardens where the compost bin has been shoved in the corner of the garden and become overgrown and full of grass cuttings and a few sticks, and we are asked to remove them as they don’t work properly. The thing with compost bins is they actually work on a very simple basis and they don’t work on electric or batteries! If they are not doing the job properly it’s because you are not doing something right! You are effectively creating a little world in there, full of micro-organisms that will do the work for you if you give them the right conditions. I know compost bins are not the most attractive things, but you need to consider where they are placed to get the most out of them. They need to be in a warm place, so somewhere that gets some sun, as heat is a major contributor to the process, and it helps speed things up. They are also better if they are stood directly on the ground rather than on a concrete base. Make sure they are accessible and not right at the end of a very long garden, or you won’t be bothered to walk to it to use it. You need to be able to access it to use it and give it the odd mix up with a garden fork. Once it’s in the right place you need to make sure you put the right things in it. Small amounts in layers are better. Too much will mean that it can’t be broken down easily, so filling it up with just grass clippings will give you a bin of smelly mouldy grass clippings. On the subject of smell, a correctly functioning compost bin wont smell. You can put in small amounts of grass cutting, shredded newspaper, egg shells, any vegetable or fruit peelings, any garden plant waste (but avoid anything that is woody), used tea bags and coffee grinds, and even seaweed if you have some! Pretty much anything that is green and organic can go in, but avoid weeds like bindweed, dandelion roots etc. As the compost bin fills it begins to generate heat and the micro-organisms begin to break everything down. Giving the contents a stir with a fork helps to speed things up A good compost bin should do its work in a few months and you should end up with very decent friable compost at the end. To get the best results it’s better to have a few bins on the go. One that’s ready, one that’s in the process of breaking things down and one that you are filling up. It really is worthwhile doing and you’ll be amazed at how much waste can be got rid of by using one. It can certainly help to save money on the disposal cost of the rubbish and also the cost of buying new compost. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

New £45 million Flood Defence Scheme for Shoreham Unveiled

ore than seven kilometres of new river and sea defences helping keep the community of Shoreham safe from flooding from storms and rising sea levels have been officially opened. The new £45 million Adur Tidal Walls scheme will better protect over 2,300 homes and 169 commercial properties, as well as important local infrastructure such as the road network, railway line and Shoreham Airport. Spanning 7,200 metres along the banks of the river Adur with 1.8km of new defences on the east bank between Coronation Green and the A27 road bridge, and 5.4km on the west bank between the river mouth and the A27 road bridge. The majority of the project has been funded by a £37.4 million contribution from government, alongside contributions from Coast to Capital LEP, West Sussex County Council and a number of private developers through Adur District Council. Sir James Bevan, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, attended an event to officially open the scheme today (Friday 22nd March) along with representatives from the community. Cllr Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, who spoke at the event, said: “The Adur Tidal Walls scheme will have an immeasurable impact on the residents and businesses in Shoreham and Lancing. It will not only will protect our communities from future flooding but it also gives investors certainty, supporting the creation of new homes and workplaces while opening up the riverside to local residents.” “I want to thank the Environment Agency and their contractors for the work over the past couple of years. The complex scheme has presented a number of challenges and there is still the issue of completing the defences at the Sussex Yacht Club site to resolve.” The old flood defences varied in height and many were coming to the end of their design life. The new defences are

formed of embankments, sheet pile walls, rock revetments, flood glass, and property level protection, and are designed to last for 100 years, with the option of being raised further to add even greater protection into the future. As part of the project, the Environment Agency has also improved public footpaths along the route of the defences. The new defences are made up of over 15,000 bricks, 800 m3 of concrete and 6,845 tonnes of rock. The project has also created approximately 1.4 hectares of compensatory saltmarsh habitat for the benefit of local wildlife. Sir James Bevan, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency said: “This new scheme represents a remarkable feat of engineering which will see Shoreham better protected from flooding over the course of the next century.” “The Environment Agency has worked closely with partners and the local community to build and upgrade 7 kilometres of new and existing flood walls, embankments and other defences, bringing greater peace of mind to thousands of homeowners and well over one hundred businesses in the local area.” Floods Minister Thérèse Coffey said: “I’m delighted to see the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls flood scheme open, protecting over 2,000 homes and businesses and supporting crucial local infrastructure including Shoreham Airport.” “With £37.4 million of government investment representing over 80% of the total cost, the project showcases the very best of partnership working, demonstrating how government can work with its valued partners to continue to support local communities from flooding.” The Environment Agency is investing £2.6 billion to better protect an additional 300,000 homes by 2021. Many of these flood and coastal schemes incorporate a range of measures including working with nature, alongside traditional engineering techniques.

ocal retired architect Mr Christopher Harris of Shoreham would love to see his proposal for the Beach Café to be considered. His proposal for the new development of the toilets on Beach Green pays tribute to the 20th century American Architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The design favours a more ‘organic architecture’. One that Mr Harris believes would be more sympathetic to the surroundings. The design would have a wave shaped roof, insulated and covered with local vegetation which is not only salt tolerant but will also attract and support wildlife. It would have glass walls that allowed uninterrupted views of the surrounding area. All in all, the design would blend into the current environment. We will pass any letters onto Mr Harris from the community.

‘Celebrating Shakespeare’ 2019

fter three highly successful and much enjoyed Shakespeare Festivals since 2016, Shoreham Wordfest is holding its fourth annual Shakespeare celebrations from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th April. The Fest will be a feast of diverse events at venues in Shoreham, something hopefully for everyone to enjoy. This year, we have: • a lively and challenging performance of Macbeth by acclaimed theatre company ‘This Is My Theatre’, in the ancient and lovely St. Mary de Haura Church; • ‘Sweet William’, a one man talk by renowned Shakespearean actor and scholar Michael Pennington; • a free concert of songs, sonnets and soliloquies; an illustrated talk by Jeremy Barlow, leading expert on music and dance in the time of Shakespeare; • a singing workshop and a drama workshop; • a Shakespeare film, and • our Shakespeare Night Revels, an Elizabethan ceilidh for all to celebrate the great Bard’s birthday with dance, food and entertainment. ‘Gastronomic Glastonbury’ returns with star-studded line-up

HE UK’s biggest celebration of food and drink has set a date to return with a mouth-watering line-up of star chefs and major live music acts. The hugely popular Foodies Festival, which attracts more than 25,000 visitors to each of its three-day events, is heading to nine UK venues – Brighton, Bristol, London, Birmingham, Cambridge, Cheshire, Edinburgh, Oxford and Southampton – for a feast of family fun between May and August. For the second year running, the festival will play host to a live music stage featuring performances from headline act Scouting for Girls and boy band power group Boyzlife, comprising Westlife’s Brian McFadden and Boyzone’s Keith Duffy. Brian McFadden said: ‘’Keith Duffy and I are delighted to bring our Boyzlife tour to Foodies Festival, where we’ll be performing many of our favourite Boyzone and Westlife hits. It’s a perfect day out – wonderful food, summer sun and music everybody knows and loves. We’re so proud to be headlining the Musicians Against Homelessness stage in support of Crisis, the national charity for homeless people. Homelessness is a growing problem all over the UK and every penny raised helps save lives. Ingrown Toenails

hilst there are some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting. An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better. People will often try cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth. Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails. Marjorie Eyre

orn in Derby in 1897, Marjorie Eyre’s real surname was Eyre-Parker. She was an English operatic singer and actress who lived for a time in Southwick. She is best remembered today for performances in the Savoy Operas for the famous D’Oyly Carte Company. Marjorie Eyre studied at the Royal College Of Music and then became a soprano chorister. From 1924 she worked for the D’Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company. Richard D’Oyly Carte had been manager of the Royalty Theatre in Soho in 1875, when he had encouraged W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan to create for him a number of original English comic operas. The success of Gilbert and Sullivan’s early works allowed the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company to be formed, and they went on to build the Savoy Opera House to stage mainly Gilbert and Sullivan’s works. They also built the Savoy Hotel. Marjorie Eyre’s first small part away from the chorus was the role of Giulia in ‘The Gondoliers’ in her first six months with D’Oyly Carte. In March of 1925 she transferred from the rep to D’Oyly Carte’s New Opera Company where that July she played Yum-Yum in ‘The Mikado’ as well as Celia in ‘Iolanthe’ and Ella in ‘Patience’. By 1928 she was regularly playing principal soprano roles for the company. It was while singing for D’Oyly Carte that Marjorie Eyre met and married Chichester born principal baritone Leslie Rands in 1926. Playing both minor and major parts, Marjorie Eyre then joined the opera company’s tour of North America during the years 1928 and 1929. It was on this tour that Rupert D’Oyly Carte, the son of the company’s founder, decided that her future lay not in singing soprano, but mezzo-soprano. Perhaps he detected something in her voice, as she matured as a singer that told him this would allow her to achieve her greatest potential. On the company’s return to England, she went into vocal training to lower her voice in preparation for the mezzo roles she would now be offered. From this point on Marjorie Eyre played principal soubrette roles for the rest of her twenty-two year career. A soubrette is both a voice type and type of opera role. It is a light and bright voice, and suits those roles often to be found in comic operas,

where a female character is flirty, cheeky and confident. Mezzo-sopranos are often called upon to play soubrette roles, as their slightly lower voices suit the material. The opera parts that now came Marjorie Eyre’s way as a singer included Hebe in ‘HMS Pinafore’, Edith in ‘The Pirates Of Penzance’ and the title role in ‘Iolanthe’. During her long, fifteen-season stint as principle soubrette with the D’Oyly Carte Company she appeared on two of their recordings. These were ‘Patience’, where she took the role of Lady Saphir, recorded in 1930, and ‘The Mikado’ where she played Pitti-Sing (1936). Marjorie Eyre had a son with her husband Leslie Rands and continued with the soubrette roles for D’Oyly Carte until retiring from the stage in 1946. Leslie Rands joined her in retirement in 1947. They moved to the Sussex countryside for a while and a quote from ‘The Gilbert and Sullivan Journal’ at that time said of the operatic couple: ‘one hears of farming pursuits likely to engage their attention at their delightfully situated new home in Sussex.’ Marjorie Eyre returned to the stage in 1949 for an Australian tour, which also included performing in New Zealand. In 1952, she starred together with her husband in a week’s charity run of ‘Merrie England’ in Priory Park, Chichester. Leslie Rand took the role of the Earl Of Essex and she sang Jill-All-Alone. By 1950 the operatic couple were living at 9 Albany Villas, Hove, then in 1963 they moved to 23 Glebe Villas, Southwick. This made Marjorie Eyre the second acclaimed female opera singer to reside in Southwick, as Dame Clara Butt had been born in the now demolished Albion Terrace on February 1st 1872. Marjorie Eyre was for many years the vice-president of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. She died in Brighton 1987 aged 90.

“Better than ever” is the aim for the 2019 legendary Southwick Beer and Music Festival.

he organisers of the festival explained that they listened to what festival goers said last year: “We had lots of great feedback, people really enjoy this annual event, but we are always trying to improve. So this year there will be a wider than ever selection of beers in a range of strengths, including porters, stouts, IPA, mild, darks and bitters. new venture for Adur East Lions is a melanoma screening day on Saturday May 11th. This day is being set up in conjunction with Sussex Community Dermatology Service. The Lions have been fortunate to obtain the services of three local consultant dermatologists and a specialist GP to help with the running of this event. The screening day is planned to start at 10.00 in the morning and to end at 4.00 in the afternoon. The event will take place at Shoreham Community Centre, Pond Road, Shoreham. For anyone who is concerned about a new or existing mole or for individuals who spend a lot of time outdoors the screening is one way to check for any early signs of skin damage. The early detection of a problem can provide an opportunity to seek further advice and treatment should this be required. Wates Residential supports unemployed adults in Shoreham-by-Sea to kick-start their careers National developer delivers legacy for community through investment in skills

oung unemployed adults in Shoreham-bySea who have been struggling to get into work have been given specialist training by Wates Residential to help boost their employment prospects. The national developer demonstrated its commitment to improving training opportunities in the area as eight students graduated from its accredited Building Futures programme on Friday. The free two-week course provides basic construction training and helps participants develop employability skills to help them make the transition into employment or further training. Activities included masterclasses on joinery, tiling and carrying out small repair tasks, as well as classroom-based lessons on health and safety and interview technique practice sessions with Wates and members of its local supply chain. On Friday, representatives from Wates Residential and Chairman of Adur District Council, Joss Loader joined the students at a closing ceremony and certificate presentation at The Harbour Club in Shoreham-by-Sea to celebrate their achievements. All of the participants received a BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Construction and Health and Safety. Student, Marcin commented on the experience: “This course has really helped with my career and I feel that it has opened new doors for me. If I had not got on this course, I would still be searching for work and trying to obtain my CSCS. Thanks to the support of Wates and Ixion, my future is looking brighter.” The Building Futures programme, which was delivered in partnership with Ixion Trainers, forms part of Wates Residential’s commitment to ensuring that the business’ presence in the local area leaves a positive lasting legacy through local employment and training opportunities. Wates Residential and its supply chain partners will now support candidates in seeking work placements to ensure that the course leads to sustainable long-term employment.

As part of its presence in the region, including developing 200 homes at the nearby Daedalus Village development in partnership with Homes England, Wates Residential has made a pledge to invest in the local economy and create a wider social impact by creating employment and training opportunities for local people. SML College student gets publishing deal for graphic novel aged 15 and becomes instant sell-out success on Amazon

oco Kirkland, is an extraordinary young person (now aged 16), dedicating most evenings for a whole year to creating her first graphic novel and then becoming published aged just 15. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Coco has struggled for years with Dyslexia and ADHD, however since starting at SML College her learning journey has been transformed. On 7 January 2019 Coco’s first book, Project Immortality, was published by Markosia (one of the UK’s leading publishers of graphic novels) and within days the run sold out completely on Amazon. Coco is Markosia’s youngest ever creator and this was also one of their longest books at 250 pages. Ian Sharman, Editor In Chief at Markosia says, “We were astounded when we found out Coco’s age as the quality of her work suggested to us that she was far older and more experienced. Coco is the youngest creator whose work we’ve published and we hope this is merely the start of a long and illustrious career!” When she attended mainstream school Coco was constantly in trouble for doodling, however she remarks that because she’s a visual learner, actually rather than being naughty she was ‘note-taking; “I would doodle and make origami in school as that helped me understand the class and what was going on. However in secondary school I would get in trouble with teachers

for that. Understanding individuality isn’t their thing; there are so many kids in a classroom they don’t have time to ‘get’ everyone. This is a massive handicap for some students, especially those who might be more creative in the way they learn.” says Coco. She continues, “Now I’m at SML College, I’m able to teach myself so I use pictures a lot. I took two GCSE’s early; Law and Religious Studies. Official Opening of Bereavement Suite at Worthing Hospital

hospital suite designed to give parents a safe haven to stay in after the loss of a baby has been officially opened on the maternity unit at Worthing Hospital on Wednesday. The Maple Suite offers a home-from-home environment with a private entrance away from the delivery suite, with its own delivery bed, bathroom, sofa bed, television and kitchenette. Joined by maternity staff, Love Your Hospital, the Trust’s dedicated charity and local families who had fundraised to support the suite’s development, the Mayor of Worthing cut the ribbon and expressed his heartfelt thanks to all involved. He said: “We are delighted to be able to open a space within our hospital’s maternity department and it is certainly lovely to see our local families assist with the funding of such a personal space and to see them here with us today. “On behalf of myself and the Mayoress, we hope that the families that use the space, albeit under emotional and upsetting circumstances, can find the suite homely and as comfortable as possible.” In 2017, one in every 225 births in the UK ended in a stillbirth. On average, nine babies are stillborn every day in the UK, making it 15 times more common than cot death. For parents, parting with a stillborn baby is the first step in a long and difficult grieving process. A device called a Cold Cot, also available in the suite, provides a temperature-controlled mat placed at the base to keep babies cool and allow parents to spend more time with them. Juliette Phelan, Maternity Matron for Worthing Hospital said: “Experiencing a stillbirth is so distressing for families and the staff involved. Our vision as a maternity team was to create a quiet, homely and dignified space to enable couples to spend quality time with their baby without being disturbed by the hustle and bustle of our busy labour ward. “Sadly, the room is in regular use, but we’ve already had some incredible feedback from families who have said it has made such a difference. “We now have a beautiful space in which we can provide support and care to parents going through a difficult time. I’d like to say a special thank you to everyone who has made the Maple Suite a reality.” Shelley Kyte, a Clinical Systems Trainer at Worthing Hospital, raised more than £3,500 with her partner Mark towards the suite in memory of their baby girl, Rosie, who was born sleeping on 11 June 2015. On what would have been Rosie’s first birthday, the couple completed a 100-mile run to provide funds for a new cold cot. Shelley said: “The day Rosie arrived was also the day our

world came tumbling down. After her birth, we stayed with her for a while, but unfortunately could not stay the night which broke our heart. “We were surrounded by the sound of babies crying in the delivery suite and the happiness of other families as we left hospital without our angel. “A few months later, we reflected on the care and space available to us and decided to take on a fundraising challenge so other families didn’t to have the same heart-breaking experience we did.” Brighton-based company, Paxton Access, where Shelley’s partner Mark is an employee, raised more than £4,700 towards the refurbishment. Paxton CEO, Adam Stroud, said: “A big thanks to Love Your Hospital and to the maternity department for all their support during this period. “It is fantastic to see the suite opened and we hope that future families that will use it can hold memories of their child that can last forever.”

Boxpark agreed deal to develop first Big Beach Box in Shoreham

nternationally-renowned development company Boxpark has signed a lease to create a landmark seafront dining destination and community cafe on Shoreham Beach. The Brighton-based firm - who are behind acclaimed casual dining and retail developments in Shoreditch, Croydon and Wembley - have struck an agreement with Adur District Council to create the Big Beach Box on the site of a run-down toilet block. Boxpark are intending to collaborate with Brighton local Dan Stockland to bring the great food and relaxed vibes of the award-winning Big Beach Cafe brand to Shoreham and create a multi purpose restaurant/cafe hub centred around supporting local community groups. Shoreham Big Beach Box will also provide a roof terrace, changing rooms, community space and a centre for water sports, and will work with local partners to showcase the best of the region’s talent in a vibrant programme of events, workshops and talks at the site. Councillor Brian Boggis, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that these exciting plans are coming to fruition as it will create a vibrant destination which, first and

The Big Beach Box will be the latest in a series of developments which is regenerating Shoreham and the wider area. Recent years has seen the opening of the £11.5 million Adur Ferry Bridge, the creation of awardwinning farmers markets in the pedestrianised East Street and a new major office block to accommodate hundreds of jobs. Work on redeveloping the western harbour arm of Shoreham Port is also ongoing with work on two major schemes to create hundreds of homes well underway. Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “For too long this toilet block has been an eyesore, dominating the only major green space on Shoreham Beach. I look forward to seeing what plans Boxpark have for the site and believe it will be an exceptional addition to our area, creating enhanced facilities for the local community and thousands of visitors who come to Shoreham Beach each year.” Councillor Joss Loader, ward councillor for Marine, which includes Shoreham Beach, said: “This is a sensitive site and one of the few areas of open green space on Shoreham Beach.” “As requested two years ago, we would now like to see the Council and developer working closely with the local community and stakeholders, to offer extensive and meaningful consultation and a genuine chance for people to have their say. “Hopefully that will help the developers to offer a project which offers a well-designed and vibrant community asset, as well as being economically viable.”

his month I will be talking about Tennis Elbow, a very common injury that affects not only the tennis player but also manual workers and desk based people who type.

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow or its anatomical name, “lateral epicondylitis”, is a painful condition felt in the outside of the elbow and forearm, which is worse when gripping, such as when playing racquet sports, mountain biking, or on activities where you extend your fingers and wrists such as typing, or playing piano.

How does it occur?

The extensor muscles in the forearm that extend your wrist and fingers attach into a single point on the outside of the elbow, so when the muscles contract or tense they pull at the elbow, causing repetitive strain, trauma and inflammation, which in turn causes pain and possibly swelling.

How can you treat it?

If you are unfortunate enough to develop tennis elbow, there are certain things you can do to help the condition or alleviate the pain. 1. U se a tennis elbow strap or sports tape to compress the point of tenderness, which helps stop the muscles that pull on the elbow. 2. Use ice packs to help reduce swelling and inflammation. 3. Massage the elbow and muscles of the forearm to help reduce tension and strain on the elbow. 4. Stretch the muscles of the forearm by keeping the elbow straight, with your palm facing down and flex your wrist towards the floor. 5. Use anti-inflammatory gels to massage into the elbow. 6. If you play racquet sports, try changing the grip on your racquet to a slightly wider grip, as having a narrow grip encourages you to grip tighter. This is very common in tennis players who change racquets, to a new one where the grip is narrower. 7. Changing your posture at your desk can have a positive effect on reducing tennis elbow. 8. If you have tried these steps above and you are still experiencing pain, then you should consult a physiotherapist, who can treat the painful condition. If you manage this condition early enough then the recovery time is much shorter and the overall outcome is very successful. It is always advisable to prevent a problem from getting worse than to try treating it once the painful symptoms are more chronic and persistent. Peter Caddick-Adams named as the Patron of the Friends of Shoreham Fort

t the Friends of Shoreham Fort’s Annual General Meeting held at the Sussex Yacht Club, it was revealed that Peter Caddick-Adams had become the patron of the charity. The news was met with applause at the meeting. Peter couldn’t make the meeting, but a video was shown where he expressed his delight at his appointment. “I’m incredibly proud to be associated with Shoreham Fort, because what you have got here is a microcosm of British military history.” Sharon Penfold, Secretary of the Friends of Shoreham was elated about the announcement. “We’ve been keeping the news under wraps for a while now, as we wanted to make the announcement at the AGM. Having Peter offer to be our Patron is a huge compliment to our charity and shows that the significance of Shoreham Fort and the hard work and dedication of the Friends of Shoreham Fort volunteers is being taken seriously in the military history world.” Peter Caddick-Adams is a leading, professional military historian with nearly 30 years’ experience. He is a fellow of the

Royal Historical Society and was the official UK Historian in the 2003 Iraq War. His latest book, ‘Sand and Steel: A New History of D-Day’ is about to be released which includes the role that Shoreham played as part of D-Day. 60 plus people attended the AGM where Gary Baines was re-elected as Chairman, Sharon Penfold as Secretary; Andy Vincent and Julie Searle were also re-elected as Trustees. Daryl Holter, Sussex Police Heritage Crime Advisor spoke briefly about the importance of reporting damage and vandalism to the police, especially at Shoreham Fort which has had a large number of vandalism incidents. After the meeting was finished, the attendees enjoyed a vivid presentation given by Gary Baines on the Past, Present and Future of Shoreham Fort. About Shoreham Fort: Shoreham Fort was built in June 1857 and was manned by the 1st Sussex Volunteer Artillery. The fort has since been used for various purposes including; a film studio in 1914, an emergency Coastal Battery in WW2 and as a watch station for HM Coastguard in the 70s and 80s. The Friends of Shoreham Fort formed in 2010 and became a registered charity in June 2012. The group’s aims are to conserve, maintain and restore the Fort. They also provide education of the historical importance of the unique site and its surroundings through school visits, guided tours, presentations, research and living history displays.
