ello and welcome to the November edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. In this month’s edition we have all our regular articles, as well as local news in the area. We have Judy Upton’s article on Sir Ralph Richardson. We also have financial advice from Pembroke Financial Services on annuity rates hitting an all-time low! This coming month in Southwick and Shoreham on the 10th of November we have the Remembrance Parade taking place. Assembly will be in Shoreham at 9.30am at Community Centre, Pond Road and at 10.30am at Southwick Car Park depending where you reside. We have tried to put as much information on what is happening this coming month. Unfortunately, there will be no fireworks on Shoreham Beach going forward. The Bonfire Society for Shoreham will no longer go ahead due to costs. However, there are many others one can go to such as Lewes and Brighton to name a few. The winners of the competition to win a signed copy from local Author Georgina Downs was won by Sarah Lewis and Sally Rose. Have a great November. We will be back in December and of course we love receiving all your communications and we always endeavour to get them in the magazine. Please send to us by the 10th of November for the December Issue! Warm Regards, Angela Front Photo – Angela McEnery Copies of Inside Shoreham can be found at: Shoreham Library; Shoreham Community Centre; Southwick Community Centre.

Shoreham Beachbox plans get the green light

I

nternationally-renowned development company Boxpark has received planning permission to create a landmark seafront dining destination and community cafe on Shoreham Beach. The Brighton-based firm – who are behind acclaimed casual dining and retail developments in Shoreditch, Croydon and Wembley – received approval to create the Shoreham Beachbox at a meeting of Adur District Council’s Planning Committee last night (7th October 2019). It will see a run-down toilet block transformed into a contemporary multi-purpose split level cafe-restaurant with a paved outdoor seating area and roof terrace with coastal and countryside views. Public toilets will be retained and upgraded within the building while changing rooms, a centre for water sports and community space for up to 90 people will be made available to local groups. Speaking at the committee, developers said the coastal setting had inspired the design of the building with the intention of delivering the “best beachfront cafe-restaurant in the UK”. Councillor Brian Boggis, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “There is no doubt that Beach Green is a special place and, providing this new exciting venue is managed correctly, the Shoreham Beachbox can bring immense benefits to our area. This is Boxpark’s first venture outside of London. Bringing a company with their worldwide reputation for creating exciting places for people to eat and drink is a real vote of confidence in Adur. It shows that people want to invest in our communities to create more vibrant places for people to live, work and relax with their friends and family.” The Council entered into preferred development agreement with Boxpark for the site in Beach Green in 2017 and a lease for the land was signed earlier this year. When complete, it is expected that about 25 jobs will be created while developers have made a commitment to use local contractors To accommodate deliveries, the existing bus stop will be extended while the location of a Council-owned surface car park close to the site alleviated parking concerns.

Roger Wade, CEO and Founder of Boxpark, said: “Our intention from the start has always been to create the best seafront cafe-restaurant in the UK. With planning approval granted we have now taken a large step forward to achieving that ambition. We now commit to working with the community to make sure we deliver on our promise. I’m confident that our plans will transform this site, turning a run-down block which is a hub for antisocial behaviour into a vibrant destination caferestaurant which will put Shoreham Beach on the map.” Councillor Carol Albury, Chairman of Adur District Council’s Planning Committee, said: “While we understand some of the concerns raised by local residents around this proposal, it was agreed the creation of this landmark building would deliver huge benefits while regenerating a dilapidated toilet which has seen better days.” Cllr Albury added that while the new building would bring something special to the area it was important that West Sussex County Council resurfaced the run-down shared pedestrian and cycle route to the south of the development.

O

n Monday 7th October a group of electrical apprentices from the Tungsten Training Centre carried out a beach clean up of the local area and the area surrounding their electrical workshop which is located near the Lady Bee Marina and Shoreham Port. “There is a huge plastic pollution problem across the globe and we wanted to do our bit to clean up the beaches while helping to protect the environment.” “We managed to clear several bags of rubbish which was predominately plastic and also cleared the area where two swans and cygnets have made their home right in front of our electrical workshop.” It was great for the apprentices to be able to give back to the local community and help clean up the local beaches and surrounding area.

Ubuntu Football Academy

E

nglish Language Homestays, a local language school based in Shoreham-by-Sea with over 25 years of experience in hosting international students, also have a language centre in Cape Town, South Africa. ELH send European students to integrate into the local high schools, where students from Europe have the chance to improve their English, as well as improve their social skills whilst living within the South African culture. In the past months, ELH South African’s centre manager Marike, has been successfully raising awareness of the Ubuntu Academy within the area through local fundraising events to help and support the organisation. What is Ubuntu Academy? Ubuntu Football Academy is based in Cape Town (South Africa). A non-profit making organisation helping young boys that have been growing up without their fathers, to become educated, bright and independent adults. Their aim is to provide a mentorship, education and a loving home at their Football Academy residence until the boys reach age of 18. Both staff and students are all working very hard towards developing their skills and personalities (not just the football skills). And very successfully! Jordan (15), one of the Ubuntu team players has recently been offered a scholarship to play football at Pennsylvania. English Language Homestays’ aim is to offer two spaces at their Football & English Academy for the duration of two weeks. What is included? The language school will cover the two weeks

full board accommodation, football coaching and visits to stadiums within the programme (Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, AMEX). “We really love the idea of helping these boys through something that they love doing – like football! Even though they already speak English – let’s remember English is the 2nd or 3rd language that they learn, so offering them English & Football programme would be beneficial and will encourage even further progress”

Can you help?

Even though the language school is happy to offer a complete free of charge two weeks stay on their Football programme, the boys will also need return flights to/from Cape Town. So the language school is organising a raffle in order to raise money for their flights. Raffle Prizes needed. ELH is looking for raffle prize donations from local companies – and all the money from the raffle tickets will go directly towards the return flights for the boys. “We thought of Albion at first, looking at their publicity on work within the community, maybe there are some items that they could donate for the raffle, but sadly, they have never got back to us. We are reaching out to all the local shops and organisations asking if they would like to get involved – and help spread the word.” ELH Football Academy programme runs in July, over the period of 4 weeks. The school started in 2018 and is in partnership with Football Sussex FA and has since successfully doubled the number of participants this Summer (2019).

Paralympian gold medallist throws support behind disability charity campaign

B

ritish sailing’s golden girl, Helena Lucas MBE, has added her support to a Sussex charity campaign that aims to build some of the best facilities in the UK for disabled sailors – right here on the south coast. Sussex Sailability’s current base at the Sussex Yacht Club in Shoreham is to be demolished to make way for flood defences to protect the town. However, this has allowed an opportunity to ensure that the new facilities are built with accessibility at its heart. The ‘Door to Shore’ campaign aims to raise £538,000 which will enable the charity, in partnership with Sussex Yacht Club, to create a fully accessible centre of sailing excellence in Shoreham for those with disabilities. Paralympian Helena made history at London 2012 by becoming Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist, before going onto win Bronze in Rio. She heard about the Door to Shore fundraising campaign and was keen to add her support to that of fellow Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie. Helena said, “Sailing is a real leveller and can transform people’s lives. So, please help Sussex Sailability to raise the funds needed for their new fully accessible Yacht Club. It will enable disabled sailors to enjoy the amazing experience sailing gives; that sense of freedom and independence when you push off from the dock leaving all disability behind, just you, the boat, the sea and the wind.” Terry Kinch, the Commodore of Sussex Yacht Club and Trustee of Sussex Sailability said, “Sussex Yacht Club established Sussex

Sailability in 2001 and it really has gone from strength to strength. We are absolutely delighted to have Helena’s support for the Door to Shore campaign and what she says about sailing being transformative is absolutely the motivation for what we’re doing here. We’d done everything we could with the old building to make it accessible, but now we have a once in a lifetime chance to create fantastic facilities that will change the lives of people with disabilities. Our first fundraising target to hit is £225,000, which we’re hoping to get to before the end of the year. That will cover the costs of the essential ramps that we need to access the new building from the town centre. However, I’m confident that this is achievable with the support of our wonderful local community and the sailing community. The goal of Door to Shore is to empower as many people as possible, with all kinds of disabilities, to have the confidence to give sailing a try and experience the feeling of freedom that it gives. Who knows, with the right facilities, Shoreham might produce a future Paralympian like Helena!” Work has already begun on the new clubhouse and facilities, which have been designed by specialist architects. The new building will be opened in 2020. For further details of the Door to Shore Fundraising Campaign, or to donate please visit www.justgiving.com/campaign/Doortoshore

Brave marathon trekkers raise over £40,000 for St Barnabas House

O

n Saturday 28 September 130 trekkers braved windy and muddy conditions to walk the marathon distance of 26.2 miles across the South Downs, raising money for local hospice St Barnabas House. The South Downs Trek, now in its fourth year, is expected to raise £43,000 for the charity, funding vital hospice care services across the local area. The event started at 7am at Northbook College in Goring, with the first trekkers arriving back around 3pm. The first Nicole Allen walker to cross the finish line at St Barnabas House was Nicole Allen, 33 from Angmering. On crossing the finish line, Nicole said: “I’m feeling tired but thrilled. I’m walking today as my uncle was diagnosed with cancer four years ago and he passed away at St Barnabas. He received excellent care and this is something that I wanted to do for him.”

A total of 130 trekkers took part in the South Downs Trek. Some, like Tracey Wadey, 49 from Worthing, were walking in memory of loved ones who have been cared for by St Barnabas House. Her father, Andy Wadey, sadly passed away in June at the hospice having been unwell with pancreatic cancer for just two years. Tracey said: “I am definitely not one for exercise on any level and the thought of walking a marathon has been very daunting, but nothing compared to the journey that Tracey Wadey and Martin Burt my lovely Dad, Andy, endured. I don’t think that I would have managed the training or the trek without my ‘training buddy’, my brother-inlaw, Martin. He tolerated my singing, my constant chatter and rather loud complaining every time we were faced with a hill! The trek definitely felt like a ‘Marathon’, but the support from the other trekkers, the volunteers and St Barnabas team helped us finish – thank you all!” “I cannot begin to explain the care and support that the team at St Barnabas gave Dad and my family. From the community team through to the in-patient nurses, each and every member of staff was so compassionate.” “We were all so very well cared for and were allowed the time and space that we needed as a family to try and make sense of what was happening. Dad felt safe and secure when finally at St Barnabas and I personally can’t thank the team enough for allowing Dad the peace that he needed.” 8

Team of five from Ellie Ellie

Others were walking in groups, including a team of five colleagues from Ellie Ellie, a giftware company based in Worthing. Founder and Managing Director, Danielle Plowman has supported St Barnabas for three years and the company has now raised over £5,000 for the charity. Danielle said: “The trek was tough. We were all fine until around 20 miles when all the aches and pains started, but we managed to cross the finish line together at around 6.15pm. It was all about us sticking together and being a team throughout. We celebrated with some prosecco and cake at the finish line! We decided to partner with St Barnabas as the hospice really represents our values as a company. At Ellie Ellie, we celebrate all of life’s moments, including some of the most difficult times. Challenges like the South Downs Trek show that there can be real joy and togetherness even in some of the saddest situations.” The highest fundraising group were a team of six men from Project Spartan – a group training facility based in Broadwater – who are on track to raise an incredible £3,500 for the hospice. Project Spartan Coach, Dan Lott, said: “At Project Spartan, we get members together to train and push each other on to try and lead healthier, more fulfilled lives. We have a membership base of 130 members and it’s amazing how many members have in some way been supported by St Barnabas. Today, we’re walking in particular for one of our teammate’s, Matt Spottiswoode, whose Dad sadly has liver cancer and is being supported by the hospice.” Sophie Henderson from St Barnabas House commented: “Everyone made it back safely and should be so proud of their marathon achievements. The money raised by our amazing trekkers will ensure St Barnabas continues to be there for everyone in the local community who needs it. An amazing group of volunteers helped to make this happen – helping at rest stops, marshalling the route and giving out medals, I would like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of them.” Challenge seekers will be excited to know that there are a couple of spaces left on the St Barnabas House Great Wall of China Challenge which takes place in October 2020. On the Cusp of Winter

D

id I say it had been dry up until now? We have had to suffer a very soggy month, as my boots that were never dry can testify, although temperatures have still been pretty good, and we definitely seem to be on the cusp of winter with the darker days and the temperatures getting lower. On a slightly gloomy note we have still got to get through the colder months that can cause so much damage in the garden with sharp frosts and snow. As always now is the time to act. Last year a lot of plants were killed off by the heavy frosts. In this area we are relatively lucky with the sea giving higher temperatures that can help to keep the worst of the frosts at bay, but even one night’s frost can be enough to kill off your cherished plant.

Smaller plants can be moved into the greenhouse to protect them. Hopefully the greenhouse has already been cleaned out. A layer of cheap bubblewrap acts as a wonderful insulation layer secured under the glass. If you don’t have a greenhouse, clear plastic bags upturned over the plant and pot can work well, as can moving it next to a south facing wall, where the heat from the day helps to keep it a little warmer. If the plant can’t be moved, then it be protected in situ. Tall plants such as Cordylines and Palms, can be protected by tying the fronds up, in much the same way a Christmas tree is stored in the shops. It can be wrapped in a layer of sacking, or bubble wrap, and the centre of the plant protected with a good few handfuls of straw. It doesn’t hurt to occasionally loosen it all off to let the air circulate as well. During the colder weather the wildlife so precious to the garden can really suffer. If you take some steps now it can really boost their survival chances. A simple log pile in a hidden corner of the garden can be a wonderful hiding place for all manner of insects and smaller animals during the winter. If you are going to feed animals such as birds over winter, make sure you do it regularly and most importantly don’t forget to give them a source of water. Also be careful when clearing the garden if you are having bonfires, as small creatures can crawl in these to hibernate. It really isn’t a lot of effort to do a little bit for the wildlife, since they are so beneficial in so many ways to the garden. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Take some time now to protect the things in your garden, to avoid damage over the winter and save having to spend out again. Pots that are not frostproof can be saved from damage by covering or moving them into the shed. If you have an irrigation system, then now is the time to have it serviced and drained down. Likewise outside taps can be simply insulated, and hosepipes should be left drained down to avoid them splitting. Whilst we are on the subject of protecting the garden, many of you will be aware that the area has been subject to thefts from gardens in the guise of people removing scrap metal etc. Again take a little time to make sure your garden gates are secure with good locks, and expensive items are locked away in locked garages or sheds. If they can’t be locked away items such as ladders can easily be chained and padlocked in place. ark Oakley M Any Garden Limited

Low Light Photography

I

t’s been a good Summer but as daylight hours reduce in numbers, how do photographers continue producing creative images? The low light conditions can be challenging but they also offer an opportunity to add mood and atmosphere to our photographs. After dark, towns and cities are bathed in artificial light of many kinds. From shops, offices, lamp posts, neon signs, sometimes with added moonlight, all creating an unusual mix of colour. Cameras capture different light sources as different colours. For instance, tungsten light records as yellow, fluorescent light records as green. Our eyes adjust to these colours but our cameras can record them as they really are. This effect can be used creatively to produce scenes that would not be obvious to the naked eye in reality. Low light pictures also work very well in black and white. This is partly because low light is less likely to render fine detail in your images so converting to monochrome can give a dark, moody, graphic image which suggests mystery or drama. The bright source of car headlights and lamp posts often produce a starburst effect which also adds to the ambience. To record a scene in low light you will need to adjust your camera setting accordingly. If you are using a smartphone, you may wish to select ‘night mode’ which will be similarly named on most makes and models. For most SLRs or bridge cameras there are manual settings which can be adjusted to let more light in on the digital sensor or the film. This will almost certainly mean that the camera shutter will be open for a longer period of time than in daylight conditions so you will need to stabilise your camera if you want to achieve a sharp shot.

firing, select the timer, press the shutter button and the camera exposes the picture a few seconds later. Of course, deliberate movement can give pleasing, surreal results either by moving the camera during exposure or stabilising the camera but allowing movement in from of the lens. Passers-by turn ghostly as they blur across the scene, vehicles can trail their lights, neon signs can flash or change colour and a whole new world is revealed.

By the way, venturing out in the rain can be rewarding as reflections appear in puddles, windows with raindrops lend themselves to creative screens which can give fragmented, eerie effects if you photograph through them. It’s a whole new way of seeing, an alternative world appears. The only restriction is your own imagination. Experiment and open your mind to your art of photography and you will amaze yourself. Enjoy. If you would like to be on the mailing list for information on my photographic workshops, please email me: steveboylephotos@gmail.com Steve Boyle ARPS Steve Boyle is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society Life Vice President of Brighton and Hove Camera Club and a widely exhibited photographic lecturer www.instagram.com/shoreham_steve www.facebook.com/steveboylephotographypage www.flickr.com/photos/shoreham_steve

Space here does not allow for me to give too many details of these settings but I do run photographic workshops locally and can help anyone with this if you contact me by email or social media as listed at the end of this article. The traditional way to hold your camera steady is to use a tripod, of course, but in towns there are various objects that cameras can be balanced on from low walls to rubbish bins. Prop up your phone with anything that comes to hand. You can roll up a jacket and place it on a surface, lean your phone against it, adjust the angle, take a few shots and continue on your evening out. This is the low cost DIY way. Or you can leave the house fully kitted out with a tripod, it’s up to you. Sometimes, that act of pressing the shutter button can move the camera so unless you have a method of remote 12

ANNUITY RATES HIT 25-YEAR RECORD LOW Annuity rates hit their lowest level since 1994 in September, with implications for those making retirement decisions. Since the introduction of pensions flexibility in 2015, annuities have become much less popular as a way of converting a pension fund into income. The most recent figures from the Financial Conduct Authority show that over five times as much money is placed in income drawdown now as goes towards annuity purchase. Now annuity rates have been back in the news, with several press reports citing calculations from the Moneyfacts comparison website that rates had hit their lowest level in 25 years. According to the data, a 65-year-old purchasing an ordinary pension annuity, with no increases in payment and no minimum payment period, could expect to receive just 4.1% – £410 a year per £10,000 of investment. That was a significant drop from the start of 2019, when an extra £58 a year was on offer. In the short term, the cause of the annuity rate decline has been the drop in long-term interest rates since January. For example, the yield on a 15-year UK government bond fell from 1.56% at the start of the year to 0.86% by mid-September. This fall in long-term rates has been a global phenomenon, resulting in negative interest rates spreading to many international bond markets.

The longer term fall in annuity rates also reflects declining interest rates, which have been on a multi-decade downward path. In addition, increased life expectancy has put downward pressure on annuity rates, although this effect has receded latterly as recent statistics have suggested life expectancy improvements are flatlining. The preference for drawdown, however, comes with investment and mortality risks – investment returns may be below expectations and/or you may outlive your pension pot. If nothing else, the annuity rate can provide a benchmark against which to consider the rate of income withdrawals. If you are approaching retirement, make sure you take advice before dismissing annuities completely, especially if you are risk averse or will have few other sources of retirement income. If you are some way from retirement, remember that 4.1% figure when you think about how much you want to contribute to your pension. After all, at 4.1% a £25,000 pension annuity – with no inflation protection or spouse’s benefits – will cost about £610,000…

Lions – Ordinary People, Amazing Things

A

fter a career in Local Government, followed by a break to bring up my three children, I returned to work in 1994 for a publishing company. Several years later I became a conference/exhibition organiser, still with the same publishing company focusing on health and social care. A job I thoroughly enjoyed before retiring at the end of 2011. I never intended to become a Lion. In fact I really didn’t know what they were about. My husband saw an advertisement in the local Inside Magazine advertising an Adur East Lions’ recruitment evening. We both went along and listened to the then President talking about Lionism. I thought “no, not for me” but my husband said “yes, he wanted to join” and little did I know that soon I would be helping out with fundraising activities, tea socials, the annual Donkey Derby, the Father Christmas Grotto at Mayberry Garden Centre and all sorts of other interesting activities and events. It took a while before I realised that I actually enjoyed helping, learning about what the Lions do locally as well as across the world and being part of a Lions Club. Before I knew it I was wearing my badge with pride and for the year 2018/19 I was privileged to be appointed Club President.

14

I am proud to be a member of Adur East Lions, a very friendly group of people trying to make a difference within their community, and to also be part of the worldwide Lions group. To Run or Not to Run?

D

edication can quite often override your own pain threshold barrier making it difficult to back off training. Whether you’re pounding the roads training for that marathon or hitting the gym, Alex Marek, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, gives some top tips on four common musculoskeletal injuries you should avoid training through.

1. Achilles Tendonitis

What it is: The Achilles tendon is a strong, thick tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Injuries tend to occur when an increased demand is placed on the tendon, often affecting people with tight and/or weak calf muscles. The pain is frequently felt within the heel and back of the ankle and may feel tight or swollen. Be warned, as discomfort may ease as you warm up through exercise, making it tempting to push through the pain. Listen to your body: Pushing through the pain risks chronic degeneration of the tendon, known as Achilles tendinosis. Furthermore chronic tendinosis may lead to complete tear of the tendon, requiring surgery. It’s always best to seek advice from a professional. Avoid returning to exercise until you are pain free. If your main exercise is running, to begin with, avoid interval training/speed workouts, and running uphill, as landing on your forefoot places more stress on the Achilles tendon.

2. Patellofemoral Syndrome “Runner’s Knee”

What it is: Patellofemoral syndrome is a condition in which the kneecap (patella) rubs against the thighbone (femur). Pain can quite often be felt at the front of the knee and is exacerbated by activities such as squatting, walking downstairs, and vigorous exercise. Listen to your body: Strength imbalances within the quadriceps and hips, and tightness within the surrounding tissues of the knee are common causes. If you ignore the symptoms, there is risk of damage of the cartilage that sits underneath the kneecap. Talk to a professional to evaluate your symptoms. Happily, they can usually be resolved with the appropriate strength-training exercises, as this helps to move your kneecap into proper alignment, so it “tracks” correctly. Until you can participate in your regular workouts pain free, turn to non-impact exercises like swimming, cycling, or using the elliptical trainer to help maintain cardiovascular fitness. My personal choice of exercise for “runner’s knee” is pilates as 16

it really focuses on your core strength. This in turn re-balances your musculoskeletal system aiding correct form whilst exercising.

3. Stress Fractures

What they are: Microscopic breaks, often found in the bones below the knee joint or feet. When they occur in the lower leg, they are often called “shin splints”. Symptoms include pain along the inside of the tibia (shin bone) which is worse when pressing on the area, single-leg hopping or running. You may notice inflammation, redness and heat within the affected area. Listen to your body: If you continue to stress the body, a microscopic fracture can become a full break, requiring a cast, bed rest and potentially surgery. Once you have had a stress fracture, there is an increased chance of acquiring another one, so do seek advice from a professional. Focus on low-impact activities such as cycling, swimming, running in the pool and strength training.

4. Lower Back Pain

What it is: Pain in the lower back affects the best and the rest of us for many reasons. It can be localised to one area or can radiate into multiple areas including the buttocks and down the leg. If your pain is brought on by exercise, it could stem from soft tissues such as muscle/ligament strains, vertebral discs and/ or nerve impingement. It can also be caused by adaptation or compensation for problems or injuries in other areas of the body, e.g. hip or hamstring. A full body assessment can correctly diagnose your symptoms. Listen to your body: While low back pain may come and go, it may develop into chronic back pain, affecting not only exercise but also your quality of life. Talk to a medical professional about how to manage your pain. Depending on the exact cause, you might just need some advice on correct movement patterns, work ergonomics and core strengthening, and/or some kind of treatment. A good rule of thumb is if you find yourself altering your exercise technique or taking pills to push through the pain, the risk of continuing training far outweighs any potential reward. So… listen to your body, ease off any high impact exercise and seek professional advice. Gustav Klimt broke away from the imperially endorsed art institutions in Vienna in 1897 and founded The Secession, the same year that Gustav Mahler took charge of the Opera House in the city. Comparing these two totemic fin de siecle talents, we place Klimt and Mahler in context, asking what fundamentally links and indeed, divides them. St Barnabas House Light Up a Life Appeal Alan’s story

I

n 2017, my husband Alan was diagnosed with cancer in his lungs, kidney, spine, lymph and brain. He was 70 years old. It was a huge shock for me and our two children, Holly and Max, who were 20 and 10 at the time. It was really important to me and Alan that we told Max about it in the best way we could. That was when we first tapped into the help available from St Barnabas – when we got advice from the Bereavement Team on how to deliver the news. When we told Max he said “If I could have him for another year, that would be okay.” In the end, he got his wish. Towards the end, the Hospice at Home team from St Barnabas were visiting us. Alan was bed-bound and needed a lot of care. The team were just so special. It wasn’t just Alan they were looking after – it was all of us. Finally, Alan went to St Barnabas, where he slipped away in v June of last year. Since then, we’ve all continued to receive amazing support from St Barnabas. Holly and Max have both had bereavement counselling, and I still see the Social Worker around once a month. We are all of us going forward with a sense of optimism and positivity because of the help that we have had from St Barnabas. There’s no way that we’d be in this position now,

without that help. We would not be moving on with our lives as well as we are. Please make a gift to St Barnabas so they can provide the same amazing care for more local families in the months ahead. I promise, your generosity will make a huge difference to so many people’s lives when they need it most.

Remember your loved ones and support your local hospice...

Sir Ralph Richardson

S

ir Ralph David Richardson was born on the 19th of December 1902. In 1906, at four years of age, he and his mother were living in what was known as Bungalow Town on Shoreham Beach. He found friendship there with the daughter of his neighbour, the suffragette leader Mrs Pankhurst. Unfortunately a playtime accident ended that friendship, when the girl received a cut on the head caused by an iron ring from a barrel that had washed up on the beach. Ralph Richardson’s next companion, and surrogate father figure, was the wrestler and strongest man in the world George Hackenschmidt, another near neighbour. Ralph overcame his fear of the sea by sitting on Hackenschmidt’s broad shoulders as the wrestler waded out to fish for shrimps. Ralph Richardson later recalled that he had been a rather lonely boy, acting out great adventures, including dramatic death scenes, on the shingle beach. It was an experience he later drew upon as an actor in the stage play ‘Back To Methuselah’ in 1928. In this role he fell down dead with such realism that his performance mesmerised both the public and his friend and fellow actor Laurence Olivier. Ralph Richardson’s stage debut was in December 1920, with the St. Nicholas Players in Brighton. He played a gendarme in an adaptation of ‘The Bishop’s Candlesticks.’ Being a small theatre company, the actors often had to double up on roles in a performance. This suited him well when his two characters Macduff and Banquo in ‘Macbeth’ actually had to appear on stage at the same time to address each other. No one had noticed this error in the adaption until the moment actually came during the performance. Ralph Richardson however convincingly carried off the scene. In 1926, Ralph Richardson appeared in the ‘Yellow Sands’ at the Haymarket Theatre in London’s West End. The play ran from November 1926 until September 1928 with a staggering 613 performances. He went on to star on stage at the Old Vic, in other West End Theatres and on Broadway. Ralph Richardson always considered his movie career, which started in the 1930’s, secondary to his theatre one. Starring in ‘Things to Come’, released in 1936, established him as a film actor. It was an adaption of the H.G. Wells novel predicting the coming Second World War. Ralph Richardson played the ‘boss’ and upon hearing of his portrayal of that character, Mussolini banned the film in Italy. In 1939, the release of ‘The Four Feathers’, which like ‘Things To Come’ was directed by Alexander Korda, and featured Ralph Richardson, was postponed by the outbreak of the Second World War. Richardson joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a sub-lieutenant. He served initially as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm alongside Laurence Oliver. The Admiralty then decided that both actors could better serve the war effort as the movie stars they were. Richardson’s first war movie was a drama documentary called ‘The Lion Has Wings’ again filmed by Alexander Korda. Richardson appeared in the propaganda film ‘The Biter Bit’ and as himself in ‘The Volunteer’, which was made by Powell and Pressburger. He also played a Dutch resistance hero in ‘The Next Of Kin; The Silver Fleet’ directed by Thorold Dickinson. Ralph Richardson went on to become an internationally famous actor of stage, film, television and radio. Among his

film credits are ‘Oscar Wilde’, ‘300 Spartans’, ‘Doctor Zhivago’ and ‘The Battle Of Britain’. Richardson was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his final film, ‘Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes’ in 1984. Ralph Richardson never forgot his origins. In the 1950s, he was rehearsing the play ‘Carving A Statue’ by Graham Greene, which would have a Brighton run. With the play’s director Peter Wood, Richardson took his Rolls Royce to Shoreham. Previously his cage-less parrot had bitten the chauffeur of this vehicle. With Peter Wood, Ralph Richardson walked on Shoreham Beach, recalling his childhood and shrimp fishing there with George Hackenschmidt. “One of the most delicious dishes I can remember in my life. He gave them to his cook who made a huge omelette straightaway on a fire. Put those shrimps right out of the net and stirred them around. He (George) said ‘now how’s that for going shrimping?’ ”

Golfers Elbow

T

his month I will be talking about the painful condition known as Golfers Elbow, which golfers in particular and other racquet sports players can suffer with.

What is Golfers Elbow?

Golfers elbow, or its correct term Medial Epicondylitis, is an inflammation in the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to the inner side of the elbow.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy 467614 Telephone: 01273 741515 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Business Centre, Three SixtyAdur Fitness, 394-398 Brighton Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 6RT 5EG

26

What causes Golfers Elbow?

Sports, such as racquet sports, golf, and even weight lifting, can cause symptoms of golfers elbow, where the stress of gripping and hitting an object or resisting a heavy object, overstrains the tendons at the point of their insertion at the inside of the elbow.

What are the symptoms for Golfers Elbow? Symptoms include: • L ocalised pain into the bony point at the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle). •P ain on gripping with the palm up, lifting weights, or carrying heavy bags. •P ain on stretching the elbow, with the elbow straight and the wrist extended with fingers pointing backwards. •P ain on activities where you swing through striking an object such as a forehand in tennis, golf swing or a bicep curl against resistance. •P ain on pressure or palpation to the inside of the elbow. • S welling (not that common) and bruising (very rare).

What can we do to help overcome Golfers Elbow?

• F irstly you should apply ice to the affected area of the elbow for 10 minutes. This would normally happen 2 -3 times in the first 48 hours. •M assaging anti-inflammatory gel into the area can greatly benefit you. • L ight stretching of the elbow with the elbow straight and pointing fingers away. • Tennis/Golfers elbow straps can alleviate pressure and tension off of the tendons that insert into the elbow. •A cupuncture can be great for curing chronic golfers elbow complaints. •P hysiotherapy treatment is very effective for curing Golfers Elbow. • Changing grips on tennis racquets and golf clubs. • Reducing the amount of strenuous activity, and even resting the area can allow for adequate recovery. If you have any questions from any of the points raised in this article, please feel free to contact me on 01273 741515 or at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. Footwear This month Karen our podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, talk about the importance of Footwear. Footwear is a common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s/50s/60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are “acceptable” changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Quick tips to remember when shoe shopping: • Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes • Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest • Buy the right shoe for the purpose • If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/orthotics) • Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly • Ensure they fit correctly Contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk 28

Stamps

H

ave you ever wondered what stamp collecting is all about? Those people who collect little bits of coloured perforated paper, bit strange!! Well it is a little bit more than that, in fact, it is a lot more than that. To use the posh term philately, this covers a wide range of collecting interests. If you have never tried it, then why not? Stamp collecting is fun, it is also a great way to increase knowledge of any particular subject. If you like collecting things, then this is just right. If you like researching subjects, again this is the hobby. Do you like writing short stories? You would be amazed by some of the stories behind some stamps. This also includes mail, in the form of envelopes, letters, postcards and all the associated documents. The range of subjects that can be collected under thematic headings is immense, whatever your interest there will be stamps, letters, postcards, etc to illustrate it. Think of any country in the world, especially one that you have visited or one that you would like to visit. To collect the stamps of that country would increase knowledge of that country

and you would be amazed at the things that you can find out. On the other hand, have you an old schooldays’ collection that you have not looked at for years? Dig it out and see what you have, did you enjoy it years ago and if so why not try again. Have you inherited a collection from a friend or relative and wonder what to do with it? Well, you could show it to another collector for an opinion, you could possibly use it to build a collection of your own. If any of these ideas appeal to you, please come to one of the meetings of the Adur Stamp Club at the Southwick Community Centre where we meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7pm for 7.30pm. We are a friendly group of men and women and will always make you welcome. Each meeting has a display by a visiting speaker or one of our own members, but there is time to chat and get to know each others interests. Members collections range from the basic all the way through to specialist. If you would like more information please ring our secretary on 01273 592518.
