JP Big Band return to Steyning

T

he mighty JP Big Band return to Steyning for their third fundraising concert, in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. On Saturday, 4th April 2020, Jim Prior and the JP Big Band will be at Steyning Grammar School, with “Jazz Newcomer of the year” Nominee Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2019 and “Rising Star” Nominee British Jazz Awards 2019 – Luca Manning! Born in Glasgow, and currently in the second year of his jazz degree at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Luca is also chair holder with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, has won ‘rising star’ at the Scottish jazz awards, and released his very first album titled “When the sun comes out”. Joining Luca on the main stage, will be Jim’s sister Bryony Prior, Celebrity trumpeter Paul Newton, fellow band leader Michael Wilson, and to top it all, a 20 piece big band and string section!

Since the the JP Big Band first took to the stage, they’ve sold out two fundraising concerts at the Steyning Centre and supported a special concert with the Cantatrice ladies choir. The JP Big Band have also been privileged to work with some great musicians over the last few years, including trombonist, Mark Bassey, West end Star, Ellie Ann Lowe, Vocalist’s, David Jackman and Rebecca Askew; Vocal Fusion Acapella, Cantatrice Ladies Choir and trumpeter, Paul Newton. Most importantly though is that all the profits from the night are going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Jim’s sister Bryony was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as a child, so the event has a very personal connection, and what better way to combine a shared passion for music and raise money for a fantastic charity. Cystic Fibrosis Trust – fighting for a life unlimited.

The concert will be held at Steyning Grammar Sschool, Shooting Field, BN44 3RX on Saturday, 4th April 2020 at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm). Tickets are £10 and are available from the Steyning Bookshop on 01903 812062 or at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jpbigbandcharityconcert 4

The Friends and Music in the Cathedral

A

mong the many glories of Chichester Cathedral is its wonderful musical tradition which is enjoyed by worshippers and visitors alike throughout the Christian year. Chichester Cathedral Friends are proud supporters of this aspect of the life of our Cathedral, helping to fund a whole range of musical activities. 2019 in particular was a very special year for both the Friends and the Cathedral. The Friends celebrated their 80th birthday and the Cathedral hosted the Southern Cathedrals Festival. This festival alternates between Salisbury, Winchester and Chichester Cathedrals and 2019 was Chichester’s year. The Friends were delighted to sponsor this highly successful festival of choral concerts which culminated in a much acclaimed performance of JS Bach’s St John Passion. This special anniversary year ended with The Friends sponsoring an inspiring performance of The Messiah performed by vocal ensemble NMH and conducted by Master of Choristers, Charles Harrison.

To mark the hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War in 2018 the Cathedral choir produced a CD of appropriate sacred music entitled ‘Lest We Forget’ and again the Friends were the proud sponsors of this. Over its 80 year history the Friends have sponsored many aspects of the musical life of the Cathedral ranging from concerts and special services and the funding of musical instruments, new sound systems and cassocks and surplices for the choir. The Friends are also proud to be sponsors of a choral scholarship, covering a significant portion of the costs of a chorister over a five year period. Chichester Cathedral Friends is a charity formed to support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral. The musical life of the Cathedral is central to this and the Friends will actively and enthusiastically continue to support the choir and all the musical activities of our Cathedral.

Membership costs £15 per year and £25 for a couple. For more information visit: https://www.chichestercathedral.org.uk/get-involved/ chichester-cathedral-friends or email friends@chichestercathedral.org.uk. 8

Keep up with Seed Planting

H

opefully by the time you read this, we will have settled down into better weather. The previous weeks have seen some horrendous storms, with high winds and also still quite high rainfall. The only saving grace is in general the temperatures have remained high, warding off problems with frost and worse! Still as we move into spring and the lighter evenings with the clocks changing, there’s much to look forward to At this time of year there is a mountain of jobs to do, and it’s easy to miss the boat if you’re not careful. Probably the most important is to keep up with seed planting if you are

raising vegetables or bedding plants from seeds. It doesn’t matter if you are a couple of weeks late, but try to keep to the time frames on the seed packets to get the best from them. It doesn’t matter if you have a small garden, no greenhouse or even just a balcony. You can still grow seeds and reap the benefits from them. It’s also a very cheap and fun way of providing plants for the garden. It really is worth a go and it’s amazing how much you can grow even in a small space. Children love it too and growing fast growing crops such as salads is a great way to get them interested and also a way to encourage them to eat more of what’s on their plate! When planting seeds always follow the instructions on the packet, especially with regards to the depth you plant the seeds at and make sure the seeds have not gone past their sell by date. I always use fresh compost, as it helps to keep diseases to a minimum. It’s also worth mixing in some pearlite or other water retaining additive to help stop the compost drying out. Ensure you label as you plant them as it’s easy to forget what they are. You may see gardening books full of pictures of expensive pots, propagators and plant labels, but you can achieve the same results very cheaply by planting in old tin cans, toilet roll tubes or practically anything. Put them on a sunny warm window cill ands they will soon start to come to life. As the weather warms the lawn will start putting on a growing spurt. It’s time to get the mower out and start looking after the lawn again. Before you start cutting, check the mower over and make sure it’s sharp. It’s also worth having a quick check over the lawn to make sure there are no stones or other obstructions that might have found their way there over winter. Make sure you choose a dry day to do the cut and start off with the mower blade set high and slowly lower during the coming weeks. At this time of year most lawns will benefit from a feed to give them a boost after winter. A lawn is after all a large collection of individual plants that need looking after. It really is a great time of year to get out in the garden, as so much is going on and there are changes virtually every day, so get out and have a wander around the daffodils which are beginning to die off and are rapidly being replaced with tulips and other wonderful spring plants. Landscape

S

pring is finally around the corner and perhaps that encourages you out into the countryside. Days are getting longer and the light is perfect for the photographer as the sun remains relatively low in the sky, accentuating textures. Clouds are often wispy, ethereal and picturesque. I have to confess that landscape photography is not my favourite genre but it is very popular. Here I have illustrated various approaches in both monochrome and colour. I always think that a simple image can be the most striking. If you try to include too much detail it can make the image very confusing. Try to isolate an interesting focal point and to include only that which is relevant to set the scene. There is a much photographed Sussex dew pond with a single tree which, in the right light, throws a stunning reflection in the shallow water. I have converted my image to monochrome to simplify it even further. This gives a graphic appeal and emphasises the curve of the bank as the light graduates the tones.

The other monochrome image was taken at Dungeness and includes two people, a man made central feature and attractive clouds and trails. The textures in the rusty shed are what attracted me to this scene. The inclusion of the people to the side breaks the symmetry but they are balanced by the two tiny gulls on the right hand side. For me they are an important inclusion in the image although some landscape purists may not define this as landscape but I enjoy the intrusion of human impact because I feel it adds interest and is more honest as it is a place frequented by people so to include them represents a more factual statement. The colour photograph of the cotton grass is an example of a different, close up approach. A small selection of a scene often conveys the feel of a place better than a wider view. The

tree trunk offers contrasting colour, shape and texture in the image. This close up approach allows the viewer to use their own imagination to interpret the scene. Finally, the sunset which creates a backdrop for the silhouetted tree. I have positioned myself so that the hanging foliage diffuses the low sun a little which reduces the bright spot. There is a pleasing orange reflection on the water but importantly, it is not too bright and does not burn out the detail. We often see an over bright sun and reflection that removes detail in large areas. The trick here is to be patient. To wait until the sun begins to disappear – in this case, behind the low bank of cloud – before you click the shutter. The effect is then more gentle than shooting into direct sun and the colour of the sky does not dominate the picture as in many sunset shots. The foreground interest – the tree – adds a further element and a sense of place to the image. So if you are out and about this Spring, perhaps locally on the Downs, try to be selective. Get close if you can, don’t overload the image with information, keep it simple, be creative, think about how you compose your image, see if you can record the sense of place but lend your personal input to the pictures. Above all, enjoy the walk and enjoy your photography. I run photo workshops at The Shoreham Centre. NEW GOVERNMENT, NEW TAX TARGETS? How will the new government affect your financial planning and taxes? December’s general election delivered a Conservative government with the sort of majority which consigns the knife-edge parliamentary battles of recent years to the past. So, what will the new government do, apart from “get Brexit done”? A look at the Conservative election manifesto – by far the shortest of the three main parties – might give us some clues. Income tax - There was a promise of no increases to income tax rates – although it is worth remembering that this does not extend to Scotland and Wales, which can both set their own rates. Whilst Mr Johnson had talked about an £80,000 higher rate threshold during his campaign to become party leader, the idea didn’t reach the manifesto. National Insurance Contributions (NICs) - A no rate increase promise also applies to NICs. However, this may prove difficult to square with the regularly deferred abolition of class 2 self-employed contributions. The manifesto also promised an increase in the national insurance threshold to £9,500 in 2020/21 from the 2019/20 level of £8,632. That is worth a theoretical maximum saving of £104 a year for an employee (and £78 for the self-employed). The true saving is smaller, as the threshold would have risen to £8,788 through normal T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk

inflation linking. The manifesto expressed an ‘ultimate ambition’ – with no date specified – to raise the threshold to £12,500 (matching the current personal income tax allowance). Social care - After the problems Boris Johnson’s predecessor encountered on this topic during her election campaign, the manifesto (and Queen’s Speech) gave few clues beyond a commitment to build a cross-party consensus to solve the problem of funding social care. One condition of that solution would be that nobody needing care should be forced to sell their home to pay for it. Corporation tax - The rate cut from 19% to 17%, which was legislated to take effect from April 2020, will no longer happen. The change in the NICs threshold represents over two-thirds of the tax cuts promised in the manifesto over the next four tax years. We feel that the financial picture should be made clearer in March, when the long-overdue Autumn Budget will now be delivered. In the meantime, if you want to see your tax bill fall, the solution looks to be in your own hands, not the Chancellor’s.

The Lessore Family Of Southwick

B

orn in Southwick, on the 5th July 1884, Thérèse Lessore was a celebrated English artist who worked in both oil and watercolour. She was a founder member of the London Group, and the third wife of the famous painter Walter Sickert. One of three talented artist siblings, her brother Frederick was a sculpture and sister Ada Louise an artistic and designer. Thérèse Lessore’s grandfather Émile Lessore was born in 1805 and was a French ceramic painter who had designed and decorated Wedgwood pottery from the 1860s. His son Jules Frederick Lessore, was born in Paris in 1848 and he also became a painter. He exhibited work in Paris and later at London’s Royal Academy. He moved to Eastbourne in 1871 where he met and married Ada Louise Cooper and they settled in Southwick. Here they had three children. The first child was also called Ada Louise and she was born on the 14th of April 1865. Her brother Frederick was born on the 14th of November 1879 and Thérèse Elaine Lessore was born on the 5th of July 1884. All three became esteemed artists, and were often commissioned to design for Wedgwood among others. Frederick Lessore became a portrait sculptor and founded the Beaux Arts Gallery in London. He later lived in Rotherfield and died on the 14th of November 1951 aged 72. Ada Louise Lessore studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts as a pupil of Edward Johnston. She then became known for her calligraphy. She decorated the furniture crafted by Ernest Grimson and her illustrations featured in the manuscript of ‘Virgil’, created by William Morris and published by Fairfax Murray. She also designed the wood blocks to print the illustrated borders of the book ‘Don Quixote’ for Ashendene Press. Ada Louise (known as Louise) married the potter Alfred Hoare Powell on the 6th of September 1906. In the same year their collective works were exhibited in the Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the Grafton Gallery. This exhibition featured a framed text from the Gospel of St. Luke, Chapter 2 Verse 14, which Louise Powell had illustrated. In 1907 the couple opened a studio at 20 Red Lion Square in Bloomsbury, London.

Upon the success of Louise Powell’s calligraphic decorations for Wedgwood pottery, two assistants were hired and a second studio was opened at the Wedgwood factory. The couple’s patterns on Wedgwood china included; ‘Vine’ and ‘Oak Leaf’ and were sold in Harrods among other fashionable stores, coinciding with the popular Arts And Crafts movement. Louise Powell’s work also showed the influence of the Bloomsbury Group artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. In 1914 Alfred and Louise Powell displayed their work at the Hampstead Exhibition, and also the Decorative Arts of Great Britain and Ireland Exhibition hosted at the Louvre. In the 1930s, Louise Powell illuminated the manuscripts by A.J. Fairbank of Horace and Georgics. She died on the 30th of September 1956 in London and is fondly remembered today for her intricate hand-painted calligraphic designs. Louise Powell’s sister Thérèse Lessore became a painter, and while studying at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1904 to 1909, she won the Melvill Nettleship Prize for Figure Composition. She married the painter Bernard Adeney in 1909. In 1911 she was in the ensemble of artists known as the painter Walter Sickert’s Camden Town Group. In1912 she exhibited her paintings in the Allied Artists Association and in 1913 founded the artists’ commune, The London Group. It wasn’t until 1918 however that she put on her first solo exhibition, which was at the Eldar Gallery in London. Having divorced in 1921, she married Walter Sickert on the 4th of June 1926. Thérèse Lessore’s best-known paintings included one that featured Sussex fishermen. Other subjects were people at the circus and theatre, as well as children playing in London parks. Her watercolour art exhibition in 1931 received a glowing review from the Times who said she ‘displayed a rare talent happily employed.’ Like her sister, she also created designs for Wedgwood Pottery. Thérèse Sickert died on the 10th of December 1945. Judy Upton Refs: Wikipedia Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Problem: Marathon Runners Knee

I

t’s getting into the last few weeks of marathon training now and hopefully you’ve done most of the hard work and can start to taper. This month we explore one of the most common running injuries, especially common in long distance events, Iliotibial band syndrome, better known as runners knee. It is so common that as runners constantly build their mileage to their chosen race, the closer they get, the injury rears its ugly head. By the time the injury is present, it can be a nightmare to recover from, and too close to the race to cure completely.

What is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries. It occurs when the Iliotibial band, a large ligament, which runs down the outside of the thigh, from the hip to the shin, is tight or inflamed. It helps to stabilize and move the knee joint.

How does it occur?

When we run with poor mechanics or incorrect support from running trainers, we can put excessive strain or force through our knees and hips, depending on how we impact the ground, and the way our joints are allowed to move. One of the most common ways in which ITBS occurs, is if we roll inwards excessively at the ankle and foot, allowing our knee to twist inwards and a strain to the ITB. Another way may be if our gluteus muscles (our buttocks) are weak, we can get rotating and collapsing in of the knee, again putting strain on the band.

How can we avoid it? 1. Correct Footwear

Wearing the correct type of running trainer with the correct type of support, will allow for assisting your natural biomechanics, so that you can avoid putting your joints and muscles under undue stress.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture •

2. Glut strengthening exercises

Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion •

3. Stretching of the IT band

Louis Jones Physiotherapy 467614 Telephone: 01273 741515 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Business Centre, Three SixtyAdur Fitness, 394-398 Brighton Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 6RT 5EG

22

By strengthening your gluts, you are increasing your hip stability, which controls how your hip and trunk moves over your knee, ankle and foot, and will reduce your chances of dropping our hip during your free leg swinging through.

Stretching the IT Band will reduce the risk of friction and rubbing between the IT Band and the knee, so inflammation doesn’t build up, causing pain.

4. Sports Massage/self massage-foam rolling By having regular sports massage and using foam rollers to self-massage the side of your thigh, you can maintain a normal IT band and continue to train for your race.

If you’re suffering with symptoms of this condition, it is important that you seek advice from a physiotherapist, as soon as possible, as the earlier you can treat it the better the recovery you will have. Please get in touch if you would like to make an appointment, on 01273 741515 or info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com
