An Introduction to Art Nouveau Architecture An Illustrated lecture by Ian Gledhill
Monday 13 January 2020 1000 to 1200 The Steyning Centre, Fletchers, Croft Steyning, BN44 3XZ A look at the astonishing flowering of this highly decorative style that flourished briefly around 1900. Art Nouveau arose, initially in Belgium and France, as a reaction against Victorian historicism and the so-called “battle of the styles”. It was the emergence in the 19th century of iron as a building material that allowed for the creation of new forms of architecture. In a search for these new forms, architects such as Victor Horta and Hector Guimard turned to nature for their inspiration, having been influenced by Britain’s Arts and Crafts movement and the ideas of William Morris. Overindulged over Christmas? Feeling tired and sluggish? Could prioritising gut health help to make lasting changes?
What is the microbiome?
Your microbiome is a diverse community of bacteria and yeast that inhabits our intestines. There are around one to two kilograms of assorted microbes that live in your guts and are essential to health. There are at least 1000 different species down there, made up of trillions of different cells and often described as ‘friendly gut bacteria’. Some scientists have started calling it your ‘second brain’ where so much of our overall health come from the guts. This isn’t a new idea. Hippocrates who is considered the fore founder of modern medicine said, ‘All disease begins in the gut’.
What effect does the microbiome have on overall health?
How can you improve your gut health?
Your gut health can be improved in many ways. Firstly, by eating freshly prepared foods. The less processed the more health benefits. Secondly, by eating and drinking as many different types of fermented foods as possible. Each one has millions of different bacteria that can colonise in your guts. In drinks you can have water kefir, kombucha or milk kefir. For foods, the most popular ones are sauerkraut and kimchi, although any vegetable can be fermented. It is important to get the traditionally made fermented goods to keep the friendly gut bacteria as live as possible. A study by Dr Cotter and scientists at the University of Roehampton discovered that homemade products and those made by traditional methods contained a wide array of bacteria. Some commercial products contained barely any bacteria as they would have been subjected to pasteurisation after preparation to ensure safety and extend shelf life. If you want to try fermented products to improve gut health it is important to buy the authentic, traditionally prepared fermented products or make them yourself.
Have you ever noticed that your guts are a bit ‘off’ perhaps after a round of antibiotics? A virus, or poor diet? There has been an explosion in health literature that a diverse microbiome has huge effects on our overall health. There are studies linking the microbiome to obesity, type 2 diabetes depression, immune responses, hormones and even Parkinson’s disease. For example, a study published in Nature found that individuals who were obese had a reduced bacterial diversity. Also, animal studies show that mice that had been bred germ-free displayed depressive symptoms. Finally, research from the Netherlands’ LifeLines DEEP project were the strongest results yet in humans to show that a person’s microbiota can influence their mental health.
You can buy Roisin’s Water Kefir from her stall at Shoreham Farmers Market, 2nd Saturday of the month. Or Ginger and Dobbs. Alternatively, you can learn how to ferment your own drinks and food at her fermenting workshops. For more info visit www.roisins.co.uk or Insta RoisinsLiveLarder

Beginning of the New Year
W
elcome to 2020 and a Happy New Year to you. I hope the Christmas celebrations were good and that the new year brings you all good health
and luck. So here we are again at the start of the new year, ready to begin again. Except, in the garden it’s not the start. Its just
10
another point in the endless cycle of nature in the garden. Whilst we may think of it as the start of the gardening year, many of the plants have already made a head start on their work, in many cases hidden from view, producing shoots under the ground, or unnoticed with new growth coming in the already established foliage. So now is a really good time to take a walk around the garden and try to see what is going in your garden. Have a good snoop around and see what is already starting to appear. You’ll probably be quite surprised. Most people tend to think that the garden is completely dormant over winter, but far from it. I always find it a lift to see the new shoots coming through, with the promise of what they bring and warmer longer days ahead. Its also a good way to see what is still in the garden and what will be filling the spaces, before you go digging up areas of beds or sending money on new plants. One thing I often get asked by clients, is if a shrub is dead. The easiest way to check is to scratch a bit of its bark off with your thumbnail. If its got a green coating under then its still alive. I’m sure many healthy plants must get destroyed off on the assumption they have had it. But in the same breath don’t be afraid to get rid of something that really is dead or well past its best. The beginning of the new year brings so much new promise and potential and its certainly no different in the garden. We all look at the garden and hope that it will be a good year with the weather and that all our favourite plants will bloom well. Now really is a good time to actually look at what you want from the garden and put those ideas in to some sort of plan. It doesn’t have to be anything on a grand scale. It can be just deciding to sort out one small bed, or revamp the pots on the patio, or deciding to grow some new plants or vegetables with the children. Whatever you do, do something and make this a better year in the garden and give it a go. It would be one promise for the new year that would be worth keeping and a lot more enjoyable than many other promises that don’t see the end of January such as going to the gym! Winter Photography Opportunity
A
Happy New Year to you all. Personally, I no longer inflict New Year resolutions on myself but if you are someone who likes to challenge yourself in this way, why not resolve to take more photographs in 2020? Get out with your camera more often, which could mean a healthy walk and offers an alternative to that costly but short-lived gym membership! Use your camera to record the things that you see. Document the street scenes, buildings, rivers, the coastline and generally, the seasons which temporarily change the look of our surroundings. This time of year the trees have shed their leaves and have become skeletal. You can point your camera skyward and create abstract images using their Winter tracery.
The sun remains low in the sky so will illuminate the treetops during almost all the daylight hours. I wrote in a previous article about the effects that can be gained from backlighting. Tree branches can be rendered as attractive, graphic silhouettes. If the sun is directly behind a tree, try to position yourself so that it is partly masked by the thickest of branches and light will ‘leak’ around the the obstruction and create flare or spikes of sunlight that add interest to your shot. Another plus side of leafless trees is that you can see between the branches and through to the background. This may reveal an industrial scene, a rolling landscape, interesting architecture or a more mundane urban vista but in Summer all will remain hidden from that viewpoint, so take advantage of the next few months by photographing a scene which will disappear from view with the onset of Spring. I have illustrated this with two photographs that I took in Berlin a few years ago. The images make use of trees that are in their skeletal, Winter state. You can imagine how the scenes would be radically different if they had been taken in Summer with trees in full leaf, obstructing the background elements from view.
12
Winter months also bring misty mornings which can transform familiar scenes. It removes fine detail and gives an impressionistic feel to photographs, adding mood and atmosphere. Again I have illustrated that with photographs taken locally. Monochrome works well in these conditions, enhancing the mood but if you prefer colour, that can work too, it’s a matter of taste and as photography is art, then we will clearly have our own preferences and opinions. TIME TO START YOUR YEAR-END TAX PLANNING The next Budget could affect pensions, capital gains tax and ISAs, so make sure your year-end tax planning is complete before those changes are announced. Capital gains tax - The relative tax treatment of capital gains and income has been highlighted by several parties during the election campaign. The deferral of the Autumn Budget, originally due The current regime, with an annual exemption of on 6 November 2019, created several problems. £12,000 and a maximum tax rate of just 20% (other It meant that the political parties went into the than for residential property and carried interest) election with just a government sanctioned is generous. When it comes, as the first Budget following No matter what kind of taxpayer you are, you need an election, it could potentially include some to plan ahead. It therefore makes sense to begin thinking about some tax year end planning before available to you to manage your tax affairs. The Autumn Budget may have been deferred, but the tax year clock is still ticking.
the (Winter) Budget arrives. Among the areas to consider are:
Pension contributions - The complex rules on tax relief for pension contributions forced the previous government into last-minute sticking plaster action to prevent NHS consultants refusing to work overtime. Whatever long-term solution is eventually found, it seems improbable that it will involve granting more tax relief. That might mean restricting relief to a flat rate, an idea that has been regularly floated. If you are a higher rate taxpayer, such a change would not be good news. Don’t Slip Slide Away…
J
enny Davys, osteopath, discusses injury prevention and acute injury management in the cold weather It’s great to avoid the winter blues with fresh air and exercise – on the slopes abroad or a pop-up ice rink in town, or perhaps on the hills of the Downs. Whether you’re an experienced or amateur skater, skiier, snowboarder, sledder or hill-walker, here are some tips on how to avoid injury, and how to manage it if it occurs.
Wrap up warm
This is the number one piece of advice! It may seem obvious but it’s easy to underestimate how cold you are getting. Wear LAYERS, as air between the layers traps heat. Wear GLOVES and DRY SOCKS – if it’s cold the body diverts blood to our vital organs (lungs, heart, digestive system), so fingers and toes can get especially chilled. Wear a HAT (and scarf!) – considerable body heat is lost through the head. A warm body allows all your blood vessels and respiratory system to carry oxygen more efficiently to your lungs, muscle cells and brain, enhancing your performance in any sport.
Don’t shiver through it
If you are shivering, you are cold! Don’t ignore the first signs of hypothermia, which can be fatal. Put on an extra layer, have a warm drink, jump up and down, and get your heart working to pump blood round your body to warm it up. If you are still cold, get inside and warm up properly, rather than staying out. (See https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hypothermia/)
Watch the drink…
Winter sports are often a social affair, but do remember alcohol can make you feel warm, when actually you are colder than you realise. Alcohol dilates your blood vessels, blood rushes to the skin, giving the illusion of warmth but decreases your core temperature, may even make you sweat and can stop you from shivering. Alcohol also affects spatial awareness and balance, and therefore your skill and judgement calls as you negotiate the rink or slope…
After the fall…
If you do sustain an injury, SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL HELP: • A ny head injury – especially if any loss of consciousness, vision, hearing, speech • J oint/muscle injury – especially if the pain is so bad that you cannot move the joint or put any weight on it • A ny loss of sensation/feeling in any part of your body, particularly in the genital/private parts region • A ny difficulty in breathing or pain on breathing
ligament sprains, joint strains and muscle tears – it can get confusing. Here are some you may have seen: • RICE – R = rest, I = ice (to reduce swelling and pain), C = compression (e.g. apply a bandage or taping) and E = elevation (raise the affected joint to above heart level so as to let blood and lymph circulate, and reduce swelling) • POLICE – P = protection (e.g. taping/support), OL= optimal loading (i.e. making sure you do not overstrain the joint/ ligament/muscle more than necessary – this will change as the injury heals), I = ice, C = compression, E = elevation • MEAT – M = movement, E = exercise, A = analgesics (i.e. pain killers), T = treatment Such “protocols” can be presented as one being better than another, but they all have validity and it is more about using the most relevant elements for your situation. RICE and POLICE are often useful in the very first stages, but for most injuries “rest” in the sense of keeping the body part still, should NOT be for an extended period, as healing of any injury requires bloodflow and for that, at least gentle movement is necessary fairly early on. Equally, applying ice restricts bloodflow which in the long-term also delays healing so why ice? Swelling is a natural healing response, bringing white blood cells and other healing chemicals to the area of tissue damage, but too much swelling may actually constrict the blood and lymph vessels! This is when ice can help, reducing extreme swelling to encourage circulation again. Use ice only for up to 20 minutes at a time and let the body come back to room temperature inbetween applications. Analgesics or painkillers can be useful in allowing you to gently move and indeed just to sleep which is another vital part of the healing process. It’s always best to seek advice from a qualified professional on treatment, exercise and rehabilitation for the safest recovery.

Free! Learn to Sing Don’t consider yourself a singer? Ever wanted to sing? Would you like to sing better? Well now’s your chance as a new Learn to Sing Course starts on January 15th 2020 FREE for six weeks to encourage men to sing, make new friends and experience all the fantastic health benefits that singing can bring. The course is being run by the Award Winning Chorus Vocal Fusion Acapella with their Director Zoe Peate on Wednesdays at the Steyning Centre 7.15–8.15. It offers the opportunity to sing close-harmony songs in the acapella & barbershop style, but we’ll also provide you with skills, including breathing exercises and vocal support, which will help you to sing well in any style. The Learn to Sing course is designed to help those who want to try out singing for the first time or make a welcome return. Each week includes a warm up session to prepare our bodies, voices and minds for singing, so this warm up will include some physical, vocal and mental exercises. You will learn a song within the group, which makes it less daunting. And, very importantly, you do not have to be able to read music. The chorus provides high quality digital learning tracks that are separated into the 4 parts (Tenor, Lead, Baritone, Bass) to facilitate easy learning of the song. As well, we have an excellent music team and experienced members ready to teach and support all members of the chorus. So don’t be shy, come out and give it a try! You may just find an exciting and fun thing to add to your week. So book your place by contacting: vocalfusionacapella@gmail.com John Higgins 01444 482183

Emmeline Pankhurst
I
n John Miller’s biography of Ralph Richardson, the actor recalled that the suffragette leader Mrs Pankhurst lived near to him, for a time, on Shoreham beach. He became friends with one of her daughters, which age-wise was probably Adela. The friendship ended abruptly however when the girl was injured by an iron hoop that they had been playing with, and Mrs Pankhurst accused him of killing her daughter. In fact the injury was only a graze but the children were not permitted to play together again. Emmeline Pankhurst was born Emmeline Goulden on the 14th July 1858, in Moss Side, Manchester. She was the eldest girl in a family of ten. As a child she became aware of political protest, through the story of her grandfather, who had escaped death in the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, when a franchise demonstration had been violently attacked by the military. The future Mrs Pankhurst was only fourteen when she attended her first suffrage meeting, in Manchester, alongside her mother. Protesting had to wait however as she was soon sent by her family to a school in France. Upon returning home, the teenage Emmeline found her family’s domestic middleclass life rather dull. The male members of the family were preparing to enter various occupations including the family business, but the daughters were expected to stay at home. Mrs Pankhurst later said “Women are the better and happier for occupation: it raises them socially and intellectually.” Attending a political meeting with her parents, Emmeline met Dr Richard Pankhurst, a radical barrister, on the far left of the Liberal party. He was an advocate of women’s rights, among other causes. The couple married, on the 16th of December 1879 in Eccles, Lancashire. The following year she is listed as a Member Of the Executive Committee of the Manchester National Society For Women’s Suffrage. Her first daughter Christabel was born the same year and Estelle Pankhurst (always known by her second name of Sylvia) followed in 1882. In 1887 the family moved to London and Emmeline opened a shop called ‘Emerson’. Tragically her youngest child Frank

died of diphtheria around this time. The Pankhursts’ house at 8 Russell Square, London saw many political gatherings of social reformers. In 1898 Emmeline was involved in forming the women’s franchise league, whilst working unpaid as a Poor Law Guardian, one of the few authoritative roles a woman was allowed to do. The same year, Emmeline was dealt a harsh blow, when her husband Richard died. There had meanwhile been little progress on gaining votes for women. The all male parliament consistently resisted every call for change. On October the 9th 1903, Emmeline Pankhurst was addressing a group of suffragists: “Women, we must do the work ourselves. We must have an independent women’s movement. Come to my house tomorrow and we shall arrange it.” The next day the Women’s Social And Political Union, the WSPU was formed, its name chosen by Emmeline Pankhurst. Members were going to be exclusively women and it would campaign for parliamentary votes for women on the same terms as men. In the early years however Mrs Pankhurst and her daughters didn’t hold offices in the WSPU as they didn’t want it to be dismissed as just a family party. For the next eleven years Mrs Pankhurst campaigned tirelessly for women to have the right to vote. The WSPU became known for its marches and protests and its members became known as ‘suffragettes’. Some of the suffragettes took direct action involving window smashing and arson. Like many other WSPU members Emmeline Pankhurst was arrested on a number of occasions. The first was for obstruction when she tried to enter Parliament to deliver a protest resolution to the Prime Minister, Asquith. She was sentenced to six weeks. She was arrested another six times during the WSPU’s campaigns and went on hunger strike in prison. This resulted in her being force-fed. In 1913, the government passed what became known as the ‘Cat and Mouse Act’ under which prisoners on hunger strike were freed and then re-arrested when they’d had time to recover some of their health. On the outbreak of World War One in 1914, Emmeline Pankhurst called an end to the militant campaign and took up war work. She later adopted three ‘war babies’ as a second family. In 1918 women over thirty finally received the right to vote. Emmeline Pankhurst died on the 14th of June 1928, shortly after women were granted equal voting rights with men. Sadly her life was undoubtedly shortened by constant arrests and hunger strikes. She was buried in Brompton Cemetery. Her name is now synonymous with the votes for women campaign. There are statues of her in both London and Manchester. Judy Upton Refs: Emmeline Pankhurst, a biography by June Purvis. THE EXORCISM from TV’S Dead of Night
W
ick Theatre Company’s post Christmas offering, The Exorcism by Don Taylor, from TV’s Dead of Night is a spooky thriller, just the right antidote to jingle bells, tinsel and turkey. Dates are 8 to 11 January 2020 at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick, BN42 4TE, at 7.45pm Tickets cost £12 from the box office on 01273 597094, or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk Dan and Margaret have come to spend the holiday with friends Rachel and Edmund, in their renovated seventeenth century country cottage. But it turns out not to be the kind of relaxing Christmas break in lovely surroundings they’d all been looking forward to! As Rachel plays the piano, she suddenly gets a strange feeling of déjà vu – soon after, all the lights go out and the telephone line is dead. It is just the start of a whole lot of sinister events building up to a weird and terrifying climax. This classic ghost story is set in 1972, when exorcism had more general meanings. It is about a centuries old injustice exorcised by long silent spirits and the two unfortunate couples who become unwillingly involved. It was the first in the Dead of Night series broadcast by BBC television in 1972.

A warm welcome to the Corporate Friends
T
he Friends of Chichester Cathedral have marked the start of their 9th decade by launching The Corporate Friends – a new membership category especially for the local business and commercial community. During the eighty years of its existence the Friends have played a major role in supporting the Cathedral.Over the last three years alone the Friends have contributed over £375,000 towards such diverse projects as a new choral scholarship, new chairs throughout the cathedral and sponsorship of the 2019 Southern Cathedrals Festival. The Cathedral is central to the wider community in Chichester primarily, of course, as a centre for Christian worship. However it is also a major feature in the Chichester landscape, attracting many visitors and enterprises to the city and surrounding region each year from which the local business and commercial community derives considerable benefits. Membership of the Corporate Friends provides businesses and enterprises with the opportunity to support the Cathedral and to ensure that it continues to thrive and serve the local community. Corporate Friends membership subscription costs £100 per year and, in addition to contributing to the funding of the Cathedral, Corporate Friends will enjoy full Friends membership benefits as well as an annual invitation to a Corporate Friends Reception. Chichester Cathedral Friends very much hope that the local business community will support this important new initiative. Prospective Corporate members can join online at: https://chichestercathedralfriends.selz.com The Friends are a registered charity. For more information on The Friends in general visit: https://chichestercathedral.org.uk/getinvolved/chichester-cathedral-friends or email: friends@chichestercathedral.org.uk

7 top tips for staying injury-free this winter 1. Warm clothing: Its amazing the number of times I see young football players going to training and matches in the shorts and shirts they are going to play in. The same goes for runners, standing around in their shorts and vests before their 10K run. Make sure you keep your muscles warm before exercise, by wearing a pair of tracksuit bottoms or leggings, and a coat, which can be whipped off just before you compete.

2. Warm up properly: In order to warm your muscles and avoid strains, it is important to gently warm your body with light exercise. For example 10 minutes of light jogging will increase your heart rate and pump blood around the body to your muscles. Which leads on to number 3. 3. Stretch properly: Once you’ve warmed your body up, its important to stretch your muscles so that you reduce your risk of causing a muscle strain. Current research suggests that dynamic stretching (stretching on the move) is better than static stretching (stretching still on the spot) as its is more functional. For example you may do lunges to stretch your thigh muscles instead of standing and pulling your heel to your bottom. 4. Stay hydrated: Just because its winter and it may be cold, doesn’t mean we don’t need to be as careful about taking onboard fluids. Whilst you wont sweat as much during cold weather, you will still need to keep your muscles hydrated to minimize the risks of causing damage to them. 5. Fuel your body correctly: Although I am not an expert in nutrition, this is still an important part of helping your body to recover properly. Over the Christmas period, it may be more likely to consume more alcohol than usual, which can affect your hydration levels, so drink plenty of water and eat foods such as carbs and proteins to help give you energy for exercise and to allow your body to repair properly after. 6. Train Indoors: Ok so this may sound crazy to some of you, but if conditions are bad enough, and by exercising outdoors where you could slip or fall is not your only choice, head for the treadmill or turbo instead. Also weight training can be a great way to build strength and reduce your risk of injury. 7. Get a sports massage: This is a great way to help those aching, tight and tired muscles recover more quickly from exercise, but is also a brilliant way to avoid injury, by breaking down adhesions in muscles, which can become strains and tears. New Centre Manager Appointment Made
S
horeham’s award-winning Ropetackle Arts Centre has appointed a new Centre Manager, Anne-Marie Williams. She will take up the helm on 6th January. After four successful years as manager of Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT), where she oversaw the increase in audiences from 4,000 to 25,000 per year, Anne-Marie says: “Now that BOAT is ship-shape, I felt the moment had come to look for a new challenge. The Ropetackle is hugely exciting, particularly at a time when the venue has secured its future financially. I’m looking forward to working with the staff, volunteers and existing artists plus programming some new exciting work to ensure that the centre continues to grow into a creative hub for Shoreham and beyond.” Ropetackle Chairman, Martin Allen, said: “We are delighted that Anne-Marie has agreed to join us after her hugely successful time at BOAT. We are certain that she has the experience and the vision to lead Ropetackle through its next phase.” Having opened in 2007, Ropetackle attracts audiences of around 50,000 a year, two thirds of whom come from outside Shoreham, with the venue being well established as one of the leading arts centres in the region. “In addition to our programme of top level performance,
we provide space for a wide range of community activities, our aim being to maintain our reputation as a centre of artistic excellence, and to attract people who are less familiar with the rewards of live performance,” Martin added. He also paid tribute to Maria Reeves who stepped in to manage the centre at short notice earlier in the year. “What was going to be a temporary two-month contract driving down each day from Surrey stretched into a year. I’d like to thank Maria for helping to steer Ropetackle through a particularly turbulent time and seeing us through to the other side. Her commitment in managing the dayto-day operations and introducing new events and ideas in such a short space of time have been greatly appreciated. We wish her every success in her future endeavours.”
