Hospice launches new virtual exercise challenge
J
oin team Fit Feb and move a mile a day, your way. Research shows that 80% of new year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February. For those of us who have already fallen off the bandwagon, St Barnabas House has launched a fun and achievable virtual exercise challenge called Fit Feb. Whether you choose to run, walk, or swim, the aim is to move a mile a day throughout February. The best part, you don’t need to be super fit or belong to a gym to commit to the challenge. St Barnabas House Chief Executive, Rosemarie Finley, is taking part in Fit Feb and says, “My New Year’s resolution, and that of everyone at St Barnabas House, is to reach more people and provide the very best in hospice care. On a personal level, one of my goals this year is to try new things and get fitter. “I’ve decided to walk, but you can choose your favourite fitness activity. Just complete a mile each day and keep a log as you go. By raising sponsorship, every step, splash or stride you take will go towards ensuring local people are supported and cared for throughout their journey with a terminal illness. “Every Fit Feb donation will make a real difference. Raise £35 in sponsorship and you could provide a patient with 4
an hour’s physiotherapy treatment. Raise £100 and your efforts could provide 10 patients with a freshly prepared and nutritious meal.” Also supporting the campaign is St Barnabas House Vice President and former radio DJ, Ambrose Harcourt, known fondly to many as ‘Mr Lurve’. Ambrose says, “February is the month of love, so I encourage everyone to love themselves and love their local hospice by taking part in Fit Feb. For my Fit Feb, I’m going to walk a mile a day on my running machine upstairs in my house. And when I can, I’ll go for a walk in my local village as well.” Sign up to Fit Feb is free and closes on 31 January 2020. Visit www.stbh.org.uk/fit-feb

hristmas may be long gone, but the spirit of Christmas isn’t as two local charities have found. Shoreham Food Bank (run by the Trussell Trust) and Turning Tides Worthing were awarded £2,000 each this week by Ropetackle Arts Centre; the proceeds from collections organised at the end of each performance of 2019’s Shoreham Pantomime, Snow White. More than 6,000 tickets were sold during the three-week run, and audiences dug deep after enjoying the fun of LP Creatives’ sold-out show. Nicky Thornton, Ropetackle’s marketing manager said: “We were blown away by the generosity of people when we reached out to the community last year to help us keep Ropetackle going, so it felt only right that we should spread that good will. These two charities do exceptional work with some of the most disadvantaged people in our society and we wanted to help them help others. The amount donated was outstanding. We really couldn’t believe it and are extremely grateful.” Samantha Stapley, Director of Operations at the Trussell Trust said: “Food banks work hard to provide not only essential

food, but also little extras that offer hope at a time when people need it most. This can only be done with the support of people and businesses in local communities, so we’re very grateful for support for food banks like this. It will make a huge difference – thank you.” Paul Comber who manages the Shoreham Foodbank, added. “This contribution helps us to obtain food items that are necessary; even though we have numerous other items donated like baked beans and soup, we also need things like coffee or tinned tomatoes. Donations also help out the ‘behind the scenes’ expenses, like stationery and go towards the rent of the premises we hire. THANK YOU Ropetackle Art Centre and their audiences.” Fundraising representatives from Turning Tides, Abbi Last and Lucy Knowles, were also delighted with the money, which will go towards funding the charity’s local community hubs. “The hubs provide specialist advice and practical support for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness,” Lucy said. “The teams also work to draw up personalised plans for our more vulnerable clients, with the aim of breaking the cycle that they find themselves in. “Homelessness is increasing and it is at Christmas, when people are with their families, in their nice warm homes, that they tend to think more about those less fortunate. Our donations definitely spike at that time of year. “We are so thankful to Ropetackle and the audiences. It is a lovely gesture and will really help.”

Book Signing with local author Jennifer Pulling
E
ver since Judith Goldstein arrived like a shooting star to disturb the peace of painter, Claude Monet’s household (Jennifer Pulling’s Monet’s Angels) readers have wondered: ‘what happened next?’ Now the local author and playwright has come up with the answer in Monet’s Shadow. It is 1937. Isabelle Goldstein, a beautiful young American, arrives in Normandy’s Giverny, determined to discover her mother’s secret. Monet’s stepdaughter, Blanche, feels threatened by these consequences of the past when her special relationship with her stepfather was undermined. She will do anything to prevent the Goldstein secret coming to light, knowing it will destroy several lives. In Monet’s Shadow, the famous water lilies’ peace and beauty finally prevail over the destruction of war and Blanche rediscovers her life’s true meaning as an artist.
Jennifer Pulling is a writer, playwright and journalist who has worked for many national newspapers and magazines. Her plays All Things Weird and Wonderful and Bird of Fire played in the grounds of the historic church of Mary de Haura during Adur Festivals. End of Story examined the relationship between Primrose and Harold Shipman and played at the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne. Her travel memoir The Great Sicilian Cat Rescue tells of her one-woman mission to save Sicilian cats. The Cat: Paperscapes celebrates the variety of cats around the world and describes the characteristics of over 50 cats. Jennifer will be on hand at the Shoreham Gallery to answer questions and sign her new book – 8th February from 10am and 22nd February from 10am. Website www.jenniferpulling.co.uk

Shed the festive excess and channel those New Year good intentions by tackling the ultimate in fun and fitness – the Gung Ho! giant inflatable obstacle course. Run, jump, climb, dodge and slide your way to victory over this 5km challenge of thrills and spills which has been inspired by TV shows like Total Wipeout and It’s A Knockout. Get set to tackle a range of gargantuan obstacles including ‘The Wall’ and ‘Danger Zone’ before conquering the ‘Final Countdown’ to successfully complete this heart-thumping assault course. Gung Ho! returns to Southampton Common on Saturday 20th June, 2020 and registration is now open so grab your chance to follow in the footsteps of more than 250,000 participants who have taken on the Gung Ho! Challenge since 2015. Organisers are gearing up to make the 2020 Gung Ho! the best yet with new obstacles and its legendary fun-filled party atmosphere. Event director Alan Brown said: “We love coming to Southampton, which was at the top of list of places to go back to in 2020. We’re working extremely hard to make each event fresh and exciting, so that even if you have taken part before, going Gung-Ho! in 2020 will be even more exciting than it was the first time.
“Gung Ho! is like no other 5K event in the UK as it is not about speed, toughness and endurance, but about having fun and challenging yourself and we provide everything to make that happen. It also has huge appeal as it’s not a race, which does make a huge difference if you’re a first timer. Gung Ho! is the perfect event for people of all ages, size and fitness to find their inner ‘Gung Ho!’ and have an amazing day out.” The event is perfect for families, friends and colleagues to take part together in completing the Gung Ho! Challenge on a fun-filled day that is like no other. The only stipulation is entrants must be at least 4ft tall. This year, more than 25,000 entrants are expected to take part at Gung Ho! events across the UK. Gung Ho! is also a great way to raise funds for charity with more than £1m raised for good causes to date, while it has also raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity partner BBC Children in Need.

An Ounce of Prevention
C
hristmas now seems long gone, but we seem to be in a familiar theme at the start of this year, with the weather being very similar to the end of last year. The temperatures are still keeping mild, but we just cannot seem to get a decent dry period. Everywhere seems to be saturated and it is taking its toll on the garden.
Lawns are suffering especially badly at present. The fact that the ground is pretty much waterlogged means any new rain has nowhere to go. The effects of this may not be apparent now but when we had similar weather a couple of years ago, many lawns took a real battering with the roots of the grass simply rotting away in the wet ground. There is not a great deal you can do but try to avoid walking on the ground. This will avoid compacting the ground and causing more damage to the grass. If you get a dry day it may be worth taking a fork to bad areas and using it to aerate the ground to let the water pass a little more easily. If you are getting any areas on the lawn that are really bad and holding water then, as a last resort, sweep the water off. The lawn along with the beds and pots will have suffered from the prolonged rain washing the nutrients out. As the water soaks down into the ground it takes the nutrients with it, stripping the soil of all the goodness the plants need. Again, when we get into drier weather it would be advisable to use a lawn feed on the lawn. Any pots will benefit from topping up with compost and either a liquid feed or some slow release pellets. With the larger beds it would be a good idea to top them up with a good couple of inches of compost. The last time we had a wet winter like this, it was followed by very cold weather with the beast for the east. Again, this really did a lot of damage as the already weakened plants took a battering from the cold. Often this damage wasn’t apparent until later in the year. So, don’t be fooled by the milder temperatures. Keep an eye on the forecasts and if cold weather is predicted it will be well worth making sure any vulnerable plants are covered with fleece or hessian to keep the worst off of them. It does sound a bit of a gloomy start to the year, but it really is best to be prepared and the old adage of an ounce of prevention really holds true. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Creative Use of Light in Photography
I
wonder what February will bring creative photographers in terms of light. Our Winter so far has been very mild and at the time of writing we are entering our umpteenth day of mainly overcast, grey skies. Photographers often refer to this as ‘flat light’. There are other interpretations of ‘flat light’ but my belief is that this is the true definition. Skies blanketed with cloud give a soft, diffused light which is shadowless and therefore offers no shading, no modelling and little contrast for the photographer. This gives an effect of everything in the image being two dimensional, shapeless and therefore, flat. For instance, when we look at a photograph of a tree trunk lit with directional sunlight, one side has a highlight whilst the other side is in shadow. This modelling tells us that the tree trunk has shape rather than resembling a cardboard cut out. When the light is evenly diffused, the same tree trunk will have equal light all around and therefore can appear to have no 3D shape – in other words, it appears ‘flat’. A photographic image is 2D with only height and width so we need to introduce visual tricks to add depth to the scene to create the illusion of 3D. Of course, in real life, our brain tells us that the trunk is rounded because we’ve all seen trees before! However, in a photograph we require a little evidence of shape and that evidence can be provided by directional light which introduces highlights and shadows.
Of course, some photographers enjoy flat light as it can give a serene appeal to an image. My photograph of the blue picnic tables on Bognor seafront demonstrates how this can work. Also my colour image of the basketball court on Brighton seafront taken on a blustery, overcast day is totally shadowless. The depth in this image is provided by the inclusion of foreground, mid ground and background interest, whereas the monochrome image relies on the harsh shadows produced by directional light to give a more dramatic, graphic feel.
12
Likewise, the interior shot with the sunlight bursting through the windows of an art gallery relies on directional light to give foreground interest which leads the eye of the viewer through to the background figure. A classic example of creating depth to a picture, capturing that 3D visual illusion. The word ‘photograph’ means ‘drawing with light’ and the possibilities for creativity are limited only by your imagination. I shall be running a workshop at The Shoreham Centre on the subject of Creative Use of Light on Saturday February 29th from 2pm – 4pm followed by a short photowalk where we can put these theories into practice – whatever the weather! INVESTING ON PRINCIPLE Whether it’s the Extinction Rebellion protests or Greta Thunberg’s speech to the UN, there has been a renewed focus on climate change in recent months and what individuals can do about it. This has led to calls for investors to divest funds away from ‘harmful’ industries and sectors such as oil and gas, mining and airlines, which are some of the biggest producers of carbon and other greenhouse gases. This doesn’t just apply to organisations with millions of pounds at their disposal. Ordinary investors also have opportunities to ‘green’ their ISAs and pensions. Ethical funds: are funds taking a more principled stance on investment choice. Many screen out companies or sectors that do not meet their guidelines, which vary from fund to fund. Some older funds traditionally avoided sectors such as alcohol and armaments. Today many have a more environmental remit. However, while some funds exclude whole sectors such as oil and gas, others take a ‘best of breed’ approach, investing in companies with better records on issues like pollution, water waste and recycling. ESG investments: funds that adopt this approach take into account environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, alongside standard financial data, when deciding whether to buy or sell a stock. This can help identify whether the company is likely to be a profitable long-term investment in a world which is more environmentally aware. You may be a relatively small investor, but it’s worth bearing in mind that the UK pensions industry is worth over £2 Trillion! While your retirement funds are managed on your behalf, you can choose where this money is invested. Independent Financial Advisers and Investment specialists, Pembroke Financial Services are delighted to announce the completion of a suite of responsible investment portfolios to cater for all risk appetites. The November 2019 launch of the Better World Growth portfolio means that we now offer our clients a full ‘collection’ of ethical investment offerings to complement our Better World Cautious and Better World Balanced investment portfolios. As a track record, we have managed an Ethical Balanced investment portfolio since November 2009 which shows a 10-year annualised return of 8.27% net of fund charges (Source FE Analytics to 8th January 2020). We are proud of the returns we have generated for clients from this portfolio, proving that the received wisdom – which had been, up until now, that investing ethically was ‘niche’ and an area where you would inevitably have to compromise investment returns – has changed.
There is no doubt in our minds that investing ethically will become the new norm. Please contact us if you feel that we can help you. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Investing in shares should be regarded as a long-term investment and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances.

Southlands Hospital League of Friends
T
he League was started on 7th February1950 by the Shoreham & Southwick Rotary Club and the Inner Wheel and it is interesting to note that the first gift to the hospital were two deck chairs. From this humble beginning the League has grown and has become part of the local community. For the last seventy years we have been privileged to serve Southlands Hospital both patients and staff with amenities such as televisions, telephones, curtains, furniture etc. to name but a few. But also providing much needed medical equipment thus enabling the consultants, surgeons and doctors to have the most up to date technology to treat patients this costing many thousands of pounds. Donations in recent years have included a new entrance for the harness block of Southlands £70,000, £50,000 towards the scanner at Worthing hospital, £25,000 for the Diabetes Centre and £25,000 for Security cameras. More recently the Friends gave £85,000 towards equipment in the new eye care centre as well as physio equipment, seating in dermatology plus many other items throughout the hospital. Over the years the Friends have given in excess of 1 million pounds to provide much needed facilities/equipment to meet the needs and comfort of staff and patients of Western Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. All of this could not have been achieved without the help of a wonderful band of volunteers, they turn out in all weathers and even at short notice to provide help and assistance to patients and staff The demolition of the harness block in 2016 saw a turning point in the life of Southlands Hospital in that it ceased to have an inpatient facility and became an ambulatory care centre, meaning almost an outpatient unit, this did not deter the Friends from continuing to fund and supply items to most of the various clinics.
14
The hard part came when the Friends had to give up their original shop and tea bar to a commercial enterprise under a tendering process implemented by the Trust, however due to some pressure and help from the public a replacement tea bar facility was created in the new Eye Care Centre, although small in size it is still able to provide an excellent service to the patients and staff. The year 2020 is the seventieth anniversary of the League of Friends of Southlands and many events are being planned to mark this occasion Our work for the hospital is made possible by the generosity and continuing support of our members. New members are always welcome, there is no fixed subscription. Details can be obtained from the Hon.Secretary, League of Friends of Southlands Hospital, Eye Care Centre, Southlands Hospital, Upper Shoreham Road, Shorehamby-Sea, West Sussex BN43 6TQ.

any of you may be starting 2020 with a challenge – maybe it’s sofa to 5k, or maybe you’re en route to a spring half or full marathon. Whatever your aim, Alex Marek, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, discusses the seven most common errors made by running newbies and experienced runners alike.
1. Wearing old trainers
You want this to be the ”new you”, but your gear is a mixture of odds and ends and your old Dunlop Green Flash trainers still feel great. Resist the temptation to begin training in them! Over time, running shoes can lose their support and structure. Every pair of running shoes has a use-by date and this on average is 500-600 miles. So out with the old, to avoid foot and lower limb injuries down the road!
2. Wearing new shoes on race day
You might have a PB (personal best) in mind and it’s tempting to purchase shiny new carbon-plaited trainers just before race day. However, this could lead to a whole world of pain, including sores and blisters on your most valuable tool, your feet. Pain can change your natural running gait, causing injuries to other areas, including knees, back and hips. You are especially at risk if you run in shoes that you’re unfamiliar with. Allow time to get used to them before the event.
3.Wearing the wrong shoes
Choosing the right new pair of shoes is essential. If you have already found a design/make of shoe that works for you, stick with them. Manufacturers sometimes claim that their particular shoes either prevent or treat certain musculo-skeletal injuries – but please be aware that shoes are not a medication and have not gone through robust clinical trials. There could be many contributing factors to any injury, not just the shoes alone. A shoe first and foremost should feel comfortable to run in, so why not try before you buy? Most shops will allow you to take them for a spin.
4. Ignoring the pain
Runners tend to accept pain as part and parcel of the sport, but it’s important to distinguish between “good” or familiar pain, which is part of the body’s natural healing process; and “bad” pain which is not usual and needs investigating. ‘Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness’ or DOMS is that familiar soreness or ache in the muscles you’ve worked, caused by inflammation and build-up of lactic acid. Try Epsom salt baths, ice baths and light cardiovascular exercise (eg a gentle walk or swim) to increase circulation and stay well hydrated to ease this type of “good” pain. “Bad” pain, however, is often more localised to a specific area and described as sharp, pinchy or nervy and will inhibit your normal range of motion. Pay attention to unfamiliar pains, ease up and seek medical help. 16
5. DIY-ing your injury treatment
If that pain feels “bad”, you might have an injury and, being a runner, you want to sort it out yourself. However, it’s easy to misdiagnose your symptoms, especially with the amount of information on the internet, so if you’re not a medic, please do seek professional advice. Don’t DIY, as this can lead to further complications down the line.
6. Getting Dehydrated
Running leads to sweating and over long periods, your body may lose more fluid than you are able to take in. When the normal water content of your body is reduced, the balance of mineral salts and sugars in your blood is disrupted which can have fatal consequences. Even minor dehydration can have a deleterious effect on your performance and decision making and lead to potential injury. Some of the early warning signs of dehydration include: (NHS 2019) • • • • •
Feeling thirsty and lightheaded Dry mouth Tiredness Dark-coloured, strong-smelling urine Passing urine less often than usual
7. Increasing your running mileage too quickly
As long, cold nights turn into missed training sessions and the looming date of a running event has got you panicking, you might be tempted to start increasing your mileage too far too soon. I advise increasing your mileage by no more than 10% per week. If you’ve missed a session, don’t run more in the next one to make up for it, or you may risk injury. Give yourself a manageable goal, get advice and go for it! Happy training and happy 2020! James Francis Stephens
J
ames Francis Stephens was born in Shorehamby-Sea on the 16th of September 1792. His father was Captain William James Stephens and his mother was Mary Peck. He was educated at the Blue Coat School, Hertford and went on to study at Christ’s Hospital in London. He then studied under the Bishop Of Durham, in 1800. From 1807 Stephens was employed as a victualling officer at the Admiralty, and was based in Somerset House. The entirety of his spare time however was taken up with his love of natural history. He was a respected entomologist and his studies were held in high regard. He was invited to work alongside ornithologist George Shaw of the British Museum and they published several works together. In 1808, Stephens’ first book; Catalogue of British Animals was published. On the 17th of February 1815 Stephens was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society. This organisation had been founded to promote the Linnean system of classifying specimen collections. While collecting insects in the Wapping countryside, James Stephens met the fifteen-year-old John Edward Gray who was there collecting plants. John was the son of Samuel Fredrick Gray, a surgeon with a keen interest in botany and entomology. After the Napoleonic War, Frederick Gray had been employed to copy manuscripts for the British Museum. He also worked as pharmacist. Stephens recognised John Gray’s remarkable gift for natural history and introduced him to William Elford Leach, a fellow entomologist. It was Leach who encouraged John Gray’s studies in botany and sparked his interest in zoology. In February 1816, Stephens entered into a gentlemen’s agreement with Doctor Leach. Stephens would be allowed to have his pick of the late George Montagu’s natural history collection for his own studies. He then undertook the task of cataloguing the specimens from the collection that the British Museum didn’t already have and arranging their sale to the museum. From January to May 1818, Stephens took leave from the Admiralty, arranged by the British Museum, to help Leach with the cataloguing of the museum’s large insect collection. In 1822 he married Sarah Roberts, the daughter of a navy captain and in 1826 he became a member of the Zoological
Society of London. In 1833, Stephens became the chairman of the newly founded Royal Entomological Society of London. The books Stephens wrote include: A Systematic Catalogue of British Insects, published in 1829 and Nomenclature of British Insects: Being a Compendious List of Such Species, published 1829. He was also the author of The Manual of British Beetles, published 1839. The 12-volume Illustrations of British Entomology was published from 1828, with the final volume printed in 1846. The colour insect drawings were by C.M. Curtis and John Obadiah Westwood. Among the insects described and depicted in the volumes were thirty-three rare specimens. Stephens gave credit for their discovery to a young Cambridge university student who had sent them to him. The student’s name was Charles Darwin. Darwin later recalled in his own biography, ”No poet ever felt more delight at seeing his first poem published than I did at seeing in Stephen’s Illustrations of British Insects the magic words, ‘captured by C.Darwin, Esq.’ “ Later Stephens returned to work at the Admiralty but disputes with those in senior positions led him to retire early. He then worked unpaid for the British Museum until his death, writing descriptions of thousands of British insects. Stephens was not a wealthy man and worked unpaid at the British Museum after retiring from the Admiralty without a pension. Every Wednesday evening Stephens would open his personal library at home for fellow entomologists to visit and study. Henry Tibbats Stainton bought this library so it could continue to open after Stephens died in Kennington, London on the 22nd of December 1852. In 1853, Stainton published a catalogue of the books in Stephens’ library called the Bibliotheca Stephensiana. Stephens’ insect collection of approximately 2800 specimens was sold to the British Museum. Judy Upton Refs: Wikipedia ‘The founders of Science at the British Museum’ 1753-1909 by A E Gunther.

£3,000 – where should it go?
A
lmost £3,000 was raised by the Lions and Friends over the Christmas period through the sleigh, Southwick Square Christmas market and the grotto at Mayberry Garden centre. Very many thanks are due to all those who helped – various ‘Friends of Lions’, groups such as the scouts, Shoreham Rowing Club and the Mud Sisters. Now members of the Lions will be considering what to use these funds for. None of it will be going towards administration or salary costs as they are all volunteers and any administration is paid out of subs. It may be that worthy causes get in touch and ask for donations such as the MS Centre which recently received a donation to buy a tilt table and a hoist. Or there may be a service activity or project that the Lions could fund such as the seniors tea socials which are held twice a year. Adur East Lions club members get together at a monthly

How to avoid injury when hitting the slopes this Winter
T
his winter will see a lot of people heading for the slopes to ski or snowboard. Being a fast and exhilarating sport, it is also a high-risk venture for causing injuries. The sheer number of people on the slopes, weaving in and out of each other’s way is one reason alone for why injuries can occur, where people do not see danger, or cannot steer clear of harms way. Skiing and snowboarding also requires a huge amount of endurance and leg strength to be able to exercise for such long periods. Flexibility also plays an important role in being able to ski or board with good technique so that muscles can work optimally and with ease. If we don’t have the flexibility or strength to get our technique right, then the risk of getting injured becomes greater.
How can we minimize these risks?
Wear a helmet – Firstly, and most importantly wear a helmet. There have been known cases of injuries and even deaths occurring through not wearing helmets, and protecting our heads. 20 years ago when I first skied, nobody wore a helmet; nowadays, you’re a minority if you don’t. Nobody cares what you look like on the slopes. Stay safe and protect your head. Do leg strengthening exercises – If you want to reduce knee injuries, then you need to build and strengthen your quads and hamstrings, which are the muscles in the front

and back of your thighs. It used to be recommended that you performed static squats, with your back against a wall to strengthen your quads, but times have changed and dynamic exercises such as squats, jump squats and leg press are much more effective. Doing 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps every other day, starting a couple of months before your holiday will bring you strength benefits and reduce your risks of nasty knee ligament sprains or ruptures. Develop your core strength – Doing core strength exercises, such as planks and bridging exercises will help provide stability to your back and help you reduce your risks of injuring yourself, should you fall over during your time on the slopes. It also means your can maintain your posture for longer and helps you save energy by making you more efficient. Work on your leg flexibility – You need to have flexibility in your ankles, calves, and thigh muscles if you’re going to be able to get your weight forward onto the fronts of your skis and be able to squat. You should stretch each leg muscle group for 1-minute holds, 2-3 times per day and before and after exercise. It should be mentioned that although you can prepare yourself, there are no guarantees that you can avoid injury, and falling awkwardly to your side, with your arm outstretched or crossing your skis etc can have poor consequences, but at least with the information given you can rest assured you have done everything in your power to avoid injury and enjoy your experience to the max. It would take pages and hundreds of pictures, diagrams and videos to go through each of the exercises mentioned above. You Tube is a great place to seek videos with explanations if you require further information. Safe in Sussex’s Gingerbread House Decorating Competition was another great success
O
n Gingerbread House Day, the 12th December, local charity Safe in Sussex held their annual Gingerbread House Decorating Competition. The day was a great success and competition was fierce, the houses were truly amazing. Fay Millar, Brighton Cakes who judged the Houses said “The quality of entries this year for the Safe in Sussex gingerbread competition was phenomenal. Every single house had some amazing decorations and it was really hard to choose a winner. I am so impressed with the imagination and quality of the entrants and look forward to seeing them raise the bar even higher next year.” The competition saw double the number of entrants from last year, with some companies that couldn’t take part making a donation to the charity. It wasn’t just businesses that entered the competition, independent business people and community organisations such as Adur East Lions entered too. The winner this year was Rayner IOL from Fay Millar, Brighton Cakes (holding the Worthing who also won shield) & Anna Dyda, Rayner IOL (holding last year. Worthing based the House). AM Trophies, donated the amazing trophy last year. So Rayner IOL will have their name engraved on it for the 2nd time. This year Safe in Sussex are going to look at giving more than one trophy, with different categories including the inspiration behind the houses. The team bonding and festive fun was very much apparent this year. Inside Worthing got their inspiration for their entry from local children at the South Farm Road Christmas event and Kreston Reeves once again held an internal competition to find out who would represent them at the competition. The gingerbread houses were given to the women and children at the refuges and the families who are helped through Outreach Support. This year a total of £811 was raised from the competition, which will help fund refuge provision. Debbie West, Community Fundraiser for Safe in Sussex said “The Gingerbread House competition is a fun way for businesses and groups to support the vital work of Safe in Sussex. We were truly impressed with the creativeness and standard of the entries and plan to build on the success of this event. “As a charity we rely on the goodwill of the community, as we constantly need to raise funds to provide services which enable people to recover from and live free from domestic abuse. This year we plan to hold our second Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks Day on 26th June and also a Mad Hatters Tea Party, details of these events will be on our website www.safeinsussex.org“ 24
If you want to put your name down to join in the festive fun in 2020, please email debbie.west@ safeinsussex.org.uk for more details. We would like to thank all the groups/ businesses that supported us this year, they were English Martyrs Catholic Church, Brighton Cakes, Raynor IOL, Inside Worthing, Nutley’s Kitchen Gardens, Janet Webb Consulting, Coop South Road, The Focus Group, Expert Virtual Assistance, CommPoint, Nadarra Cosmetics, Adur East Lions, MHA Carpenter Box, Kreston Reeves, Auditel, Natwest, and EJ Moyle. Safe in Sussex offers advice, support, refuge, awareness and education for women, children and young people across West Sussex. The charity has confidential refuges and a community refuge in Littlehampton. The refuges are for women and children who flee domestic violence. The refuges are a place where women can feel safe and be given the vital support they need, both practical and emotional. Here at Safe in Sussex we aim to increase the awareness and stop the cycle of domestic abuse in West Sussex. We also have a Countrywide Outreach service for men and women, we facilitate support groups for women in the community and we provide healthy relationship education programmes for Primary and Secondary schools in West Sussex.

M
ay I start by saying I am absolutely delighted to be joining Karen and Martin at First Foot Podiatry Clinic here in Shoreham-by-Sea. Originally from Edinburgh in Scotland, I have been living in Brighton for the past 10 years. I first visited Brighton about 20 years ago and fell in love with the weather, liveliness and the cities lust for life – I knew then that this would one day be where I lay my hat. Prior to studying podiatry, I worked in Community Education; as a Health Care Assistant at Addenbrookes’ Hospital in Cambridge; Reflexologist with advanced techniques in Thai Reflexology and latterly as a Personal Assistant where I supported women with dementia and their families. When the opportunity to study Podiatry as a mature student presented itself, I jumped at the chance and have never looked back. I graduated in 2018 with a firstclass honours’ degree in Podiatry from the University of Brighton, winning the coveted Podiatry Research Prize. I am extremely fortunate to say I am one of those people who absolutely love my job and find it both a pleasure and privilege to provide foot health care. I am motivated by a desire to provide my patients with an excellent, high quality and caring podiatric experience which is designed around their individual need. I am committed to continual professional development within the field and attend regular regional podiatry meetings,
